  • iPad Survives 100,000+ Foot Fall From Space Near Area 51

    2:20

-- G-Form, a company well known for delivering the most extreme electronics cases and athletic pads, launched an iPad clad solely in the company's 6oz Perimeter case into space and then let it free-fall back to Earth.

The company released a stunning hi-def video Thursday where the nearly naked iPad is shown hanging above the Earth in the blackness of space. In the video, the iPad is lifted to over 100,000 feet by a weather balloon which bursts at altitude, then releasing the iPad to free-fall to Earth where it crash lands on a rocky hillside in the Nevada countryside. Perhaps even more remarkable than the dramatic hi-def footage itself is the fact that the iPad survives the adventure, remaining fully functional.

  • The Most Extreme Volvo Crash Test Ever – Brand New Cars Drops From 98 feet / 30 meters

    4:02

It is the most extreme crash test ever executed by Volvo Cars, and a crucial one. Extrication specialists often use cars crashed at the Volvo Cars Safety Centre to hone their life-saving skills.

To allow rescue services to prepare for any possible crash scenario and to simulate the forces that erupt in the most extreme crashes, beyond what can be simulated with ordinary crash testing, Volvo Cars recently took equally extreme measures. For the first time, it dropped several new Volvos multiple times from a crane, from a height of 30 metres.

This approach helped create enough damage to adequately simulate the damage found in the most extreme crash scenarios: think of single-car accidents at very high speed, accidents whereby a car hits a truck at high speed, or accidents whereby a car takes a severe hit from the side.

In such situations, people inside the car are likely to be in a critical condition. Therefore the priority is to get people out of the car and to a hospital as quickly as possible, using hydraulic rescue tools known in the industry as ‘jaws of life’. Extrication specialists often talk about the golden hour: they need to release and get a patient to the hospital within one hour after the accident has happened.

“We have been working closely together with the Swedish rescue services for many years,” says Håkan Gustafson, a senior investigator with the Volvo Cars Traffic Accident Research Team. “That is because we have the same goal: to have safer roads for all. We hope no one ever needs to experience the most severe accidents, but not all accidents can be avoided. So it is vital there are methods to help save lives when the most severe accidents do happen.”

All findings from the crashes and the resulting extrication work will be collected in an extensive research report. This report will be made available free of use to rescue workers elsewhere, allowing them to benefit from the findings and further develop their life-saving capabilities.

Usually, rescue workers get their training vehicles from scrapyards. But these cars are often up to two decades old. And in terms of steel strength, safety cage construction and overall durability, there is a vast difference between modern cars and those built fifteen to twenty years ago. And new Volvos are made of some of the hardest steel found in modern cars.

This makes it crucial for rescue workers to constantly update their familiarity with newer car models and review their processes, in order to develop new extrication techniques. In other words, these training sessions can mean the difference between life and death. So at the request of the rescue services, Volvo Cars decided to step things up a notch.

“Normally we only crash cars in the laboratory, but this was the first time we dropped them from a crane,” says Håkan Gustafson. “We knew we would see extreme deformations after the test, and we did this to give the rescue team a real challenge to work with.”

A total of ten Volvos, of different models, were dropped from the crane several times. Before the drop, Volvo Cars safety engineers made exact calculations about how much pressure and force each car needed to be exposed to, in order to reach the desired level of damage.

The most advanced fighter jet in the world, the F-35B, takes on an unlikely foe during landing. Don't be fooled, this tiny terror causes a massive worry for the team.

HMS Queen Elizabeth is Britain’s biggest ever warship. It took nine years to build her at a cost of £3.5 billion. Nearly 1,500 sailors, marines and aviators have left for a make-or-break four-month deployment on the high seas. This is to forge the brand new ship’s company into an effective fighting force, but their main mission is to test the top secret F-35B Lightning Stealth Fighter – the most advanced fighter aircraft in the world that will give the ship its lethal sting.

  • How to Make a Giant Slip N Slide | I Like To Make Stuff

    9:56

This summer, beat the heat by making a Giant Slip N Slide!

TONY ROULEAU'S INSTAGRAM, CHECK HIM OUT!:

    TOOLS & SUPPLIES (affiliate links):

We hosted a big 4th of July party at our house this year, and a lot of friends came in from out of town. Because our back yard has a respectable hill, I wanted to make a massive slip n slide to bring everyone together. Josh attended Tony Rouleau's slip n slide party last year and he has a massive setup that he puts a lot of work into. I wanted to make something equally as fun without such a large investment.

This seems obvious, but the steeper the hill the faster you're people will slide. Our hill has a decent slope, but the hilliness creates a contour that would send someone down in a zig-zag path. There is also a bit of a flat area at the bottom of the hill for some water to collect, creating a bit of a splash zone to slow people down.

One important note about your area selection, when you place the plastic tarp down on the grass in direct sunlight, it creates a greenhouse-type effect and the grass turned a really dark color. There is a lot of heat being trapped under that plastic sheet and the plant's moisture is being evaporated pretty quickly. It has been 1 week since we first put the plastic down in that spot and the grass is still brown.

We began the search for an appropriate slip n slide by going to our local Dollar Store. There, Josh bought an entire display box's worth of foam pool noodles, 52 to be exact. The plan for these was to link them together to create a barrier along the sides and the bottom to help channel the water down the hill. For the actual plastic tarp, we went to Lowe's and found a 20 foot by 100 foot roll of 6 mil plastic sheeting.

We began the assembly by stringing together the pool noodles in two identical chains and tying them off at the ends. To keep them in place, I used some U-shaped garden stakes that held the string down to the ground in-between the noodles. At the top of the hill, we unboxed the plastic sheet and rolled it down the hill. After unfolding it to its full length, we laid the sheet over the pool noodles barriers and staked the tarp down as well. We had a gigantic plastic runway in my back yard, all we needed now was some water.

Of course I could have stood at the top with a garden hose and just sprayed water down the hill, but what fun would that have been? At Lowe's, Josh and I pieced together a PVC arch that would attach to the hose and would spray water through a bunch of drilled holes. The slip n sliders could run through this arch as it sprayed water all over them and the tarp.

We started with the spray bar, a length of 1 1/2 PVC capped at one end. This bar would be elevated off the ground by PVC braces that could snap in place. The other end was fitted with a reducer that would accept a 90 degree coupling and a valve. Straight down from there, a section of PVC would reach down to the ground and a female garden hose fitting would be press fit into the end. I drilled some holes in the spray bar so that water would hit many points along the slip n slide. Careful not to drill too many, I left some room to drill more accurate holes once it was placed over the plastic tarp.

To add to the effectiveness of the slip n slide, I add a little clip-on hopper for some kid's shampoo to drip from. I attached the hopper to the middle of the spray bar so that over time, little drips of soap would fall on the slip n slide, mix with the sprayed water and help slippery-ize the whole thing. It worked great, and I had to refill it a few times throughout the day.

This is absolutely the perfect addition to any backyard party and the kids were still slipping and sliding well into the evening while fireworks were bursting in air. I hope you enjoyed this project and it inspires you to set a new family summertime tradition by making a huge slip n slide. MUSIC:

  • Can Duct Tape Protect iPad Air from 100 FT Extreme Drop Test? - GizmoSlip

    3:40

A few weeks ago, we tried using Silly Putty to protect an iPad Air from a ridiculous 80 FT drop. In this week’s video, we find out how well duct tape works to protect an iPad Air from a similar style extreme drop test from 100 FT. We used three rolls of duct tape, and took forever to both put it on and take it off afterward. Check out the video. :D

Thanks so much for watching! It means so much to me to have so many people watching the channel now. I still remember when I had less than 1000 subscribers, and it is humbling to have all of you watching my channel now. More videos coming soon! Subscribe and sign up for notifications if you don’t want to miss out.

Thanks to Michael Isaev for the suggestion for the duct tape.

  • iPhone 6 in Space! HD balloon flight to 101,000 Feet by UAG

    2:05

On November 28th, 2014 we sent a brand new iPhone 6 on the ultimate adventure to the stratosphere. On its journey, the iPhone reached a height of over 101,000 feet and encountered temperatures as cold as -79 degrees F and winds as strong as 70 MPH. During the descent the iPhone 6 and flight rig withstood a 150 PRM rotation as the parachute deployed and the rig fought to stabilize.

Upon landing the flight rig broke apart, however the iPhone remained unscathed and in perfect working order.

The flight rig contained two GoPro cameras, 1 GPS locator and a backup phone with GPS and active tracking installed. The flight lasted over 3 hours and covered 12 miles across the ground. The iPhone 6 was wrapped in our composite iPhone 6 case with no screen protector installed. The iPhone was on upon takeoff but froze and shut down as the temperature dropped. When the iPhone 6 and flight rig were found, the iPhone was powered on and tested for full functionality. Enjoy the video!

    FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER:
I am a weekend warrior private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having the GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.
