  • NASA Earth From Space - Earth Viewing cameras ISS feed #RealTimeTracker

    00

24/7 Live Views from the International Space Station, Earth is seen from cameras aboard the International Space Station. Watch the Earth roll Captured from the International Space Station.

THIS WILL SHOW PRE-RECORDED FOOTAGE -
As the Space Station passes into a period of night every 45 mins video is unavailable - during this time, and other breaks in transmission, recorded footage is shown.
Currently, live views from the ISS, an external camera mounted on the ISS module called Node 2. Node 2 is located on the forward part of the ISS. The camera is looking forward at an angle so that the International Docking Adapter 2 (IDA2) is visible. If the Node 2 camera is not available due to operational considerations for a longer period of time, a continuous loop of recorded HDEV imagery will be displayed. The loop will have “Previously Recorded” on the image to distinguish it from the live stream from the Node 2 camera. After HDEV stopped sending any data on July 18, 2019, it was declared, on August 22, 2019, to have reached its end of life. Thank You to all who shared in experiencing and using the HDEV views of Earth from the ISS to make HDEV so much more than a Technology Demonstration Payload!

The ISS passes into the dark side of the earth for roughly half of each of its 90-minute orbits. As the Space Station passes into a period of night every 45 mins video is unavailable - during this time, and other breaks in transmission recorded footage is shown when back in daylight earth will recommence. As seen from the Nasa ISS live stream on the International Space Station -

    Before you ask -
Why can't we see the stars?

The cameras have a low light exposure for viewing Earth in daylight, so no stars are seen on the feeds, although the Sun, Moon and Venus can be seen. The Earth or moon on these videos is many hundreds of thousands of times brighter than the brightest stars and the cameras shoot at 60 frames per second - with an exposure that allows us to get a good view of the Earth. This exposure is too short to capture stars which are incredibly faint compared to the brightness of the planet. (Its down to photography rather than conspiracy!)

What do those different screens mean?

The bottom left screen shows photos of Earth taken by ISS astronauts.
The middle screen shows the current position of the Space Station (the large white H shape!)
The bottom right will is a 2nd live cam which will display timelapse video when the live stream is not available.

Great 4K, Ultra HD HDR footage taken from ISS to sit back and enjoy the beauty of planet earth for 10 hours. (There's a UFO on the right hand side of the screen at 24:25) Accompanied by a soothing Space Wind audio.

  • All Alone in the Night - Time-lapse footage of the Earth as seen from the ISS

    2:30

    FAQ:

    Images:
Music: 'Freedom Fighters' by Two Steps from Hell

    Editor: David Peterson
Serving Suggestion: 1080p, lights off, volume up :)

Inspired by a version of the opening sequence of this clip called 'What does it feel like to fly over planet Earth?' (Inspiration: I tracked down the original time-lapse sequence taken on the International Space Station (ISS) via NASA, found some additional ones there, including the spectacular Aurora Australis sequences, and set it to a soundtrack that almost matches the awe and wonder I feel when I see our home from above.

To those brave men and women who fly alone in the night to take us to the stars, we salute you.

    -----------------------

    Sequences:

    1. (0:00) North-to-south down the western coast of North and South America.
    2. (0:48) North-to-south over Florida, the Bahamas and other Caribbean islands.
    3. (0:56) South-East Asia, approaching the Philippine Sea
    4. (1:04) Western Europe, from France through Italy, Greece, Turkey and the Middle East.
    5. (1:20) Aurora Australis, over the Indian Ocean, approaching Australia
    6. (1:36) Aurora Australis, over the Indian Ocean.
    7. (1:52) Aurora Australis, unknown location in the Southern Hemisphere.

    -----------------------

Featured on NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day!

Explanation from NASA: Many wonders are visible when flying over the Earth at night. A compilation of such visual spectacles was captured recently from the International Space Station (ISS) and set to rousing music. Passing below are white clouds, orange city lights, lightning flashes in thunderstorms, and dark blue seas. On the horizon is the golden haze of Earth's thin atmosphere, frequently decorated by dancing auroras as the video progresses. The green parts of auroras typically remain below the space station, but the station flies right through the red and purple auroral peaks. Solar panels of the ISS are seen around the frame edges. The ominous wave of approaching brightness at the end of each sequence is just the dawn of the sunlit half of Earth, a dawn that occurs every 90 minutes.

The International Space Station’s High Definition Earth Viewing (HDEV) experiment is an external camera platform located on the Columbus module of the space station. In addition to providing beautiful views of Earth, one of the goals of HDEV is to monitor the longevity and quality of its image sensors in the space environment. HDEV operations began April 30, 2014 and only a single bad pixel has been identified.

Testing new engineering processes and camera system longevity expanded into having avid Earth-viewing followers and educational activities. To date, HDEV has reached over 300 million total views on UStream.

  • View of Earth during a Space Walk Outside the ISS

    1:31

Watch NASA astronaut Randy Bresnik Space Walk with a GoPro camera on Oct. 20, 2017 during a spacewalk outside the International Space Station.

Bresnik reflected on this quiet moment, Sometimes on a #spacewalk, you just have to take a moment to enjoy the beauty of our planet Earth. This Go-Pro footage is from our spacewalk where Joe Acaba and I refurbished the Canadarm2 robotic arm and the Dextre robotic arm extension.

Putting on a spacesuit takes 45 minutes, including the time it takes to put on the special undergarments that help keep astronauts cool. After putting on the spacesuit, to adapt to the lower pressure maintained in the suit, the astronaut must spend a little more than an hour breathing pure oxygen before going outside the pressurized module.

  • Zooming out from Earth

    4:13

The video zooms out from Garching, the location of ESO's headquarters, out to Germany, beyond Europe and the Earth, out past the solar system and our Milky Way galaxy, and finally reaching a point where every single point of light flashing by is an entire galaxy.

The Earth was once believed to be the center of the Universe. Due to the apparent movements of the Sun and planets in relation to their viewpoint, ancient scientists insisted that the Earth remained static, whilst other celestial bodies travelled in circular orbits around it. Eventually, the view that the Sun was at the centre of the universe was postulated by Copernicus, though this is also not the case.

  • International Space Station Orbiting Earth HD -- By NASA

    2:50

Many wonders are visible when flying over the Earth at night. A compilation of visual spectacles was captured recently from the International Space Station (ISS) and set to stimulating music. Passing below the space station are white clouds, orange city lights, lightning flashes inside thunderstorms and an abundance of dark blue seas. Seen on the horizon is a golden haze of Earth's thin atmosphere, decorated by dancing auroras as the video progresses. The mesmerizing green streams of light typically remain below the space station, However , the station frequently flies by the red and purple aurora peaks providing a captivating view for the crew. .

  • NASA | Earth at Night

    2:12

In daylight our big blue marble is all land, oceans and clouds. But the night - is electric.

This view of Earth at night is a cloud-free view from space as acquired by the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership Satellite (Suomi NPP). A joint program by NASA and NOAA, Suomi NPP captured this nighttime image by the satellite's Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS). The day-night band on VIIRS detects light in a range of wavelengths from green to near infrared and uses filtering techniques to observe signals such as city lights, gas flares, and wildfires. This new image is a composite of data acquired over nine days in April and thirteen days in October 2012. It took 312 satellite orbits and 2.5 terabytes of data to get a clear shot of every parcel of land surface.

This video uses the Earth at night view created by NASA's Earth Observatory with data processed by NOAA's National Geophysical Data Center and combined with a version of the Earth Observatory's Blue Marble: Next Generation.

    Space Capsule
A space capsule is an often crewed blunt-body spacecraft that reenters the Earth's atmosphere without wings. Capsules are distinguished from satellites primarily by the ability to survive reentry and return a payload to the Earth's surface from orbit. Capsules make up the majority of crewed spacecraft designs, although one crewed spaceplane has launched to orbit.
Current examples of crewed capsules include Soyuz, Shenzhou, Orion, CST-100, and Dragon.A crewed space capsule must be able to sustain life in the vacuum of space, with an often demanding thermal and radiation environment. Many systems are necessary to accomplish this, including a reaction control system, an environmental life support system, insulation, seats that can restrain weightless astronauts, communications antennas, docking hardware, a launch abort system, and more.
Space capsules have typically been smaller than 5 meters (16 feet) in diameter due to launch vehicle aerodynamic requirements. The capsule design is both volumetrically efficient and structurally strong, so it is typically possible to construct small capsules of performance comparable to lifting body or spaceplane designs in all but lift-to-drag ratio for less cost. The Soyuz spacecraft is an example.
Most space capsules have used an ablative heat shield for reentry and been non-reusable. The early spacecraft had a coating of glass embedded with synthetic resin and put in very high temperatures. Carbon fiber, reinforced plastics and high-temperature ceramic tiles or ultra-high temperature ceramic sheets are currently being evaluated for use in space exploration

    Spacecraft

A spacecraft is a vehicle or machine designed to fly in outer space. A type of artificial satellite, spacecraft are used for a variety of purposes, including communications, Earth observation, meteorology, navigation, space colonization, planetary exploration, and transportation of humans and cargo. All spacecraft except single-stage-to-orbit vehicles cannot get into space on their own, and require a launch vehicle (carrier rocket).
On a sub-orbital spaceflight, a space vehicle enters space and then returns to the surface, without having gained sufficient energy or velocity to make a full orbit of the Earth. For orbital spaceflights, spacecraft enter closed orbits around the Earth or around other celestial bodies. Spacecraft used for human spaceflight carry people on board as crew or passengers from start or on orbit (space stations) only, whereas those used for robotic space missions operate either autonomously or telerobotically.
Robotic spacecraft used to support scientific research are space probes. Robotic spacecraft that remain in orbit around a planetary body are artificial satellites. To date, only a handful of interstellar probes, such as Pioneer 10 and 11, Voyager 1 and 2, and New Horizons, are on trajectories that leave the Solar System.A German V-2 became the first spacecraft when it reached an altitude of 189 km in June 1944 in Peenemünde, Germany.Sputnik 1 was the first artificial satellite. It was launched into an elliptical low Earth orbit (LEO) by the Soviet Union on 4 October 1957. The launch ushered in new political, military, technological, and scientific developments; while the Sputnik launch was a single event, it marked the start of the Space Age. Apart from its value as a technological first, Sputnik 1 also helped to identify the upper atmospheric layer's density, through measuring the satellite's orbital changes.
It also provided data on radio-signal distribution in the ionosphere. Pressurized nitrogen in the satellite's false body provided the first opportunity for meteoroid detection. Sputnik 1 was launched during the International Geophysical Year from Site No.1/5, at the 5th Tyuratam range, in Kazakh SSR (now at the Baikonur Cosmodrome). The satellite travelled at 29,000 kilometers (18,000 mi) per hour, taking 96.2 minutes to complete an orbit, and emitted radio signals at 20.005 and 40.002 MHz.

  • Live from space: new HD cameras stream images of Earth from ISS

    1:10

NASA tested out the new High Definition Earth Viewing (HDEV) during an experiment Wednesday morning (May 7) from the International Space Station (ISS).

See LIVE images here: (don't worry if it's black: it's night-time)

The four commercially available HD cameras were placed on the exterior of the space station with the purpose of streaming live videos of the Earth.

The cameras are enclosed in temperature specific housing and the harsh radiation of space is expected to teach engineers which cameras are the best to use on future missions as the effects of space on the video quality are analyzed.
