  • NASA, SpaceX launch: NASA representatives, Elon Musk host post-launch press conference

    41:02

SpaceX founder Elon Musk, NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine, NASA Commercial Crew Program manager Kathy Lueders, a SpaceX representative, International Space Station (ISS) Program manager Kirk Shireman and NASA chief astronaut Pat Forrester held a news conference after the SpaceX Demo-2 mission launch to the ISS, which took place earlier in the day.

NASA and SpaceX sent the first crewed space mission from U.S. soil into outer space since 2001 on Saturday, after inclement weather resulted in the launch being scrubbed about 17 minutes before ignition on Wednesday.

Astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken lifted off in SpaceX's Crew Dragon capsule on May 30 from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 3:22 p.m. ET en route to the International Space Station (ISS). The mission marks SpaceX's historic first with carrying humans and it serves as the company's climactic test before NASA can certify its Crew Dragon capsule for regular operational flights.

  • President Trump watches the NASA SpaceX Demonstration Mission 2 Launch | FULL

    9:00

President Donald Trump watched two American astronauts embarked on the first manned mission to outer space from U.S. soil in nearly a decade on Saturday, formally ushering in a new era of space flight in which private companies — not the government — will send humans into orbit.

Aboard the SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule are astronauts Doug Hurley and Robert Behnken, two veterans of the now-retired Space Shuttle Program who are set for an extended stay on the International Space Station (ISS). Exactly how long they will stay has yet to be determined.

Hopefully a great, successful and safe ROCKET LAUNCH. Lifting off soon!?!? President Trump tweeted Saturday afternoon after traveling to Florida for a second time this week to witness the launch first hand.

After the shuttle program was retired, NASA charged SpaceX, the private space travel company founded by entrepreneur Elon Musk in 2002, with carrying astronauts into orbit. The program funding private companies’ efforts to send humans into orbit is called Commercial Crew.

  • Elon Musk overcome with emotion after SpaceXs 1st astronaut launch

    3:55

SpaceX founder Elon Musk was choked up with emotion after his company successfully launched astronauts to space for the first time on Saturday (May 30).

I'm really quite overcome with emotion on this day, so it's kind of hard to talk, frankly, Musk said in a post-launch press conference at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida Saturday evening. It's been 18 years working towards this goal, so it's hard to believe that it's happened.

Musk's comments came a few hours after SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket lifted off from the center's historic Launch Complex 39A, carrying a Crew Dragon spacecraft with NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley on board.

By successfully launching its new Crew Dragon spacecraft with astronauts on board for the first time, SpaceX became the first private company to launch astronauts for NASA. The crewed test flight, called Demo-2, is also the first crewed launch from the United States since the space shuttle program ended in 2011. SpaceX and Boeing were both selected for NASA's commercial crew program to wean the agency off its dependence on Russia's Soyuz to fly astronauts after the shuttle program was retired.

  • SpaceX Inflight Abort Test Post Launch Press Conference

    49:24

NASA and SpaceX completed a launch escape demonstration of the company’s Crew Dragon spacecraft and Falcon 9 rocket Sunday. This was the final major flight test of the spacecraft before it begins carrying astronauts to the International Space Station under NASA’s Commercial Crew Program.

The launch escape test began at 10:30 a.m. EST with liftoff from historic Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida on a mission to show the spacecraft’s capability to safely separate from the rocket in the unlikely event of an inflight emergency.

“This critical flight test puts us on the cusp of returning the capability to launch astronauts in American spacecraft on American rockets from American soil,” said NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine. “We are thrilled with the progress NASA’s Commercial Crew Program is making and look forward to the next milestone for Crew Dragon.”
