  • Forest of Fantasies - The Secrets of Nature

    51:54

On Christmas Eve, they say, the animals can talk. Peter Rosegger, one of Austria’s greatest writers, turned this legend into a magical short story about his own childhood in Styria’s Alpine uplands. It’s one of Austria’s most fascinating landscapes: deep, dark forests flanked by steep mountain ridges, gentle meadows reaching up to exposed summits: in limitless shades of just one color: green. Trudging through the snow to join his family for the Christmas Eve service in the valley below, tenyear-old Peter comes face to face with a young fawn in the twilight, and wonders what it could tell about growing up in the forest, with the other animals, through the seasons. This film captures the essence of Rosegger’s story and the subtle and dramatic changes of the Styrian forest throughout the year.

Northern Woods - A Tribute to the Ancient Forests of the North | Nature Documentary

Watch 'Alpine Rivers: The Cradle of Life' here:

Northern Woods is a homage and a cultural-historical consideration at the same time. The film portrays the German/Northern European forest and shows its development from primeval to intensively managed forest. It was once inhabited by wild animals such as wolves, bears, eagles, deer and musk ox. Its cultivation was carried out by Celts and Teutons. Today the forest is often a victim of environmental degradation and overexploitation.

As an animal filmmaker one often deals with lots of strange old birds. No wonder that so much can go wrong. After a long day of filming, a surprise awaits at the camp: Wolves have been looking for chocolate biscuits! Yet these are not the only things that can happen in the Arctic!
Yann Sochaczewski is out and about in the magnificent Grand Canyon. On his raft on the Colorado River, he risks life and limb in doing so.
In Australia, Thoralf Grospitz and Jens Westphalen play cat and mouse with an odd bird, that turns out to be a real entertainer.
In the Serengeti, Reinhard Radke despairs of the many tourists who constantly walk in front of his lens.

Wildlife filmmakers travel around the world for these very encounters. They bring nature into our living rooms, experience the beautiful, the saddest and the most poignant moments. And many funny ones.

Wildlife Moments - The World's Weirdest Animals | Wildlife Documentary

Watch 'The Most Emotional Wildlife Moments' here:

Nature has many weird creatures to offer and often these animals fascinate us the most. There are ants in Australia's outback that use specialised workers as living honey pots.
In Africa in the endless Bangweulu wetlands of Zambia the shoebill is on the hunt for fish, a bird that definitely lives up to its name.
Finally in the Brazilian rainforests lurk gruesome river monsters in the Amazon abyss that send shivers down the spine of even the most experienced divers.
But there are also intense human-animal-relationships like the close bond between a German diver and a dolphin female who explore the Atlantic off the coast of Ireland, or the easy rider in California who has taken care of an African elephant bull for more than 25 years.
Weird! is a breath-taking journey to visit animals around the globe who are somehow different.

Hunters of the Sky - Europe's Birds of Prey | Wildlife Documentary

Watch 'The Golden Eagle - Master of the Sky' here:

Birds of prey are symbols of power, speed and splendour. In fact, there are very few species in the animal kingdom that can be described in as many superlatives.

Their amazing use of different senses, their incredible feats of flight as well as their multitude of different hunting strategies are simply astounding.
Hawks, buzzards and eagles have conquered every habitat on earth - from the dry arid south to the coasts of Norway, all the way up to the sparse high mountains. Some of them, like the versatile hawk, can even hunt in the forest. Their literal eagle eye vision is unrivaled in the animal kingdom. All birds of prey sustain themselves through hunting, and they do so elegantly and, it seems, with effortless beauty and efficiency. This is one of many reasons why they are much admired, even romanticised, by many cultures.

Magical Moors - A Mysterious World Full of Life | Wildlife Documentary

Watch 'Wild Germany: The Mecklenburg Lake Plateau' here:

Eerie and menacing, yet hauntingly beautiful and highly evocative. The rugged Moor landscape has long fuelled our imagination, inspiring artists and poets, evoking images both terrifying and deeply romantic. It’s a land of contrasts. Wide open heaths, windswept and barren in winter, are transformed into wonderful carpets of white, fluffy cotton grass in summer. Large bears and wolves roam alongside delicately fluttering butterflies, the bubbling calls of black grouse and the enchanting trills of the great snipe.

Moors, bogs and wetlands can be found all over in Europe. Everyone has at least heard about this habitat but most know little about it. Only 1% of the Middle European wetlands are still untouched. A gigantic amount of carbohydrate is stored inside these wetlands. But knowing about this fact does not stop their destruction. Climate change and global warming are on everyone’s mind – stopping the destruction of moors and wetlands would be one great step towards the reduction of greenhouse gases.
This film shows the beauty and the magic inside the moors and its message is clear :”Save and protect our last moors and wetlands”

    10. Hammer-Headed Bat
In 2018, images surfaced online of a seemingly humongous bat with a distinctive strangely-shaped head, leading internet users the world over to wonder if it was even a real creature in the first place. The question became so pervasive, it even gained the attention of Snopes and earned a place in the fact-checking site’s official archives.

    9. A New Mosasaur
While this big guy hasn’t been around for a very long time, we didn’t know that it ever existed until recently! So it is new to US! Gavialimimus almaghri-bensis is a new genus and species of mosasaur or marine reptile, that scientists discovered in Morocco, in a phosphate mine known for its abundance of mosasaur fossils and occasionally a dinosaur or two.

    8. ‘Joker’ Spider
Earlier this year, researchers discovered a new velvet spider species in Iran! They took one look and said it reminded them of the face paint of the Joker from the iconic Batman series. Spider researchers Alireza Zamani and Yuri Marusik described the ‘Joker spider’ (Loureedia phoenixi) in a recently published paper in the journal Arthropoda Selecta.

    7. An Early Sea Creature
Last year, a team led by Virginia Tech paleontologist Shuhai Xiao formally described Yilingia spiciformis, the first known species to roam the seafloor and to have a segmented body. Additionally, it was the first creature to have identifiable front and back ends to its body, and symmetrical left and right sides -- features that nearly all of today’s animals possess.

    6. Wakanda Fish
In mid-2019, scuba divers discovered a new fish species, which they named Cirrhilabrus wakanda after the fictional kingdom in Marvel’s Black Panther movie, according to New Scientist. The fish, measuring just 2.4 inches (6 cm) long, has dark purple fins and a yellow head.

    5. Dragon Snakeheads
In a recent, rare discovery, scientists have identified a new family of fish called dragon snakeheads, which live in the underground waters of the Western Ghats, a biodiversity hotspot in southern India. Known as “living fossils,” these creatures are thought to have existed for at least 100 million years, since they diverged from their closest relative.

    4. A Millipede
When Tess Moody, a staff member at Caw Caw Interpretive Center in Ravenel, South Carolina, noticed a millipede specimen that she couldn’t identify in 2018, she photographed it and took to the internet for help.

    3. A New Wasp Species
Scott Egan, an evolutionary biologist and associate professor of biosciences at Rice University, discovered a new gall wasp species that may be a “parasite of a parasite.” He found the creature near his lab in the Houston, Texas area and first hatched the species in 2014.

    2. African Wading Mice
African wading mice are swamp- and river-dwelling rodents found in the tropical forests of East Africa that are much larger than average mice. Equipped with long feet and whiskers, they hunt for prey in the shallow waters of their habitat. Basically they are mice that crawl around the water!

    1. Two-Fingered Dinosaur
Paleontologists working in Mongolia recently discovered the fossilized remains of a previously unknown Oviraptorosaur genus and species. Officially named Oksoko avarsan, the long-extinct omnivorous dinosaur roamed the Earth approximately 68 million years ago, during the Late Cretaceous period.

Wildlife film makers sometimes risk life and limb too. In Siberia Uwe Anders is taken by surprise by an uninvited guest – a polar bear. Wildlife film makers experience also many emotionally touching moments: Oliver Goetzl and Ivo Nörenberg are witnessing a wolf approaching a lone newborn bison. But just in time its mother arrives. The ten part series shows the funniest but also the most dangerous and the most emotional moments in the wild.

China covers a vast area of over 5,200 kilometers from east to west, crossing 62 degrees of longitude and five time zones. In winter, it is nearly -50 °C at the coldest place of China, Hanma Nature Reserve in Genhe in Inner Mongolia, while it is over 30 degrees at the Xisha Islands in the South China Sea. • Animal Record Breakers - Nature always pushes the boundaries of evolution

    50:00

Nature always pushes the boundaries of evolution, never ceasing to amaze us with record breaking skills. Now with intimate footage we review the animal kingdom, picking out some of the most dramatic record breakers to examine how and why they’ve become such champs.

The obvious starting point is the biggest land animal – the African elephant – a 6,000 kilo colossus 4 metres tall, twice the height of a human and heavier than a minibus. The trunked titans also have the biggest brains on land – an impressive 5 kilos – 4 times bigger than a human’s, but don’t feel inadequate – plenty of animals can wow with their size… The giraffe is the only animal that can truly look down on the elephant. From a lofty 6 metres this gangly grazer can survey the plains. The Siberian tiger is the world’s biggest cat. 300 kilos and 3 metres of feline power and grace. The hyacinth macaw is the biggest parrot. The aptly named giant salamander is a 2m 60 kilo record holder of the amphibian world. The man-sized river wolf or giant otter of the Amazon is the biggest of its family and a rat the size of a pig – the South American capybara of is the world’s biggest rodent.
Animals of all shapes and sizes can break records, the biggest, smallest, furthest travelling, strongest biters, noisiest, but what’s the most successful animal of all?

  • Animal Behavior | Learn about innate behavior, learned behavior and more!

    8:32

In this video about animal behavior we will learn all about the different kinds of behavior including, innate behaviors, reflex behaviors, learned behaviors, imprinting and more! Birds build nests. Dogs sit roll over, chase sticks, and may do other tricks. Spiders build intricate webs. People blink, read books, talk to each other. Bees do special dances. What does each of the actions have in common? You are correct if you said they are behaviors.

A behavior is a way in which an animal or person acts in response to a situation or stimulus. Behaviors are the ways animals interact with other animals or with their environment. However, not all behaviors are attained in the same manner. For example, you had to learn how to read, but you did not learn how to blink. A dog was taught to sit up or roll over, but a dog did not learn how to dig a hole in the ground. Some behaviors animals may be learned, and other behaviors are a part of the animal at birth, and they do not need to learn them. They are born with already knowing how to
perform certain behaviors. You had to learn how to talk, read, and write. Your parents or teachers have taught you to do things, or you may have learned on your own, like playing a favorite game. Other behaviors, like blinking and grasping, are called reflexes; you were born with those behaviors.
The two types of behaviors are called innate behaviors and learned behaviors and in this video we will learn all about these different kinds of animal behaviors.

After finishing the video, we invite you to download our free 12 page lesson plan with more activities, worksheets and learning opportunities about animal behavior. It can be downloaded here:

  • David Sumpter - How to best study collective behaviour? | Collective Behaviour Seminar Series

    1:15:43

David Sumpter, University of Uppsala, presents the Collective Behaviour Seminar Series on How to best study collective behaviour?

The study of collective animal behaviour arose (in large part) from the idea that new insights would be gained into group behaviour by using mathematical models of individuals to predict emergent properties of groups. The models were judged on the insights they provided in to biological systems. A machine learning approach to collective behaviour emphasises instead model fit – how well a model predicts patterns in data. I discuss the pros and cons of these approaches, with reference to fish schooling and the team sport of football, and come down firmly on the side of models like self-propelled particle models, which provide insight from the bottom-up.
