  • Severe cold wave grips Korea, Asia and eastern United States

    1:59

    전국 추위 계속 된다
Most of the country is still bearing the brunt of temperatures well below freezing on this Monday,... a day after Seoul shivered through its coldest day in 15 years.
But according to our Lee Ji-won, the weather is gradually easing, with flights to and from Jeju resuming operations.
″The cold-wave watch has continued for an 8th-straight day in some parts of the country as Monday′s temperatures remain low.″
According to the nation′s weather agency, the Monday morning temperatures in Seoul was a bone-chilling minus 14 degrees Celsius, Daegu minus 11, and Busan minus 8.
Korea′s southern regions also received warnings of heavy snow in the morning,... while a record 1-hundred-30 centimeters of snow piled up in eastern island of Ulleung-do.
It′s been eight days since ships couldn′t approach or leave the island due to strong winds and waves... causing the island to run out of daily necessities.
But conditions are easing, with temperatures forecast to return to seasonal norms from Tuesday.
Flights to and from Jeju-do island are also back to normal from Monday afternoon, ending the 42-hour suspension for some 87-thousand travellers stranded on the island.
Korea isn′t the only country braving the severe cold spell.
A massive blizzard struck the U.S. East Coast over the weekend, and at least 19 people have died in storm-related accidents.
A state of emergency has been declared in eleven states and about 12-thousand flights have been canceled.
    Washington, D. C., received 60 centimeters of snow, the second-highest since 1922.
And the federal offices in the capital will be closed on Monday.
China also suffers from the harsh cold spell, with some northern provinces reporting seasonal lows of 48 degrees below zero.
Hong Kong saw its coldest day in nearly 60 years on Sunday as the mercury plunged to three degrees Celsius.
But the cold wave is expected to let up soon, with temperatures around the world forecast to return to seasonal averages this week. Lee Ji-won, Arirang News.

  • Extreme cold spell grips the nation _ 011118

    1:56

Now we turn to our Michelle Park at the weather center for the latest updates. Michelle, we had a wind chill falling down to minus 20 degrees Celsius here in the nation today,... but coldest day is actually tomorrow?

Daniel, the cold arctic air is flowing into the country non-stop, prompting warnings and advisories. But we should prepare for worse because, as of 10 PM tonight, the cold wave alert will further expand and strengthen, and bring down more snow on Jeju Island and the west coast of Jeolla-do province.

Tomorrow morning is going to be the peak of this frigid weather with temperatures falling between minus 15 to 20 degrees Celsius in the upper parts of the peninsula. So take necessary precautions when you commute to work in the morning.

Looking into details, Seoul is expected to drop down to minus 15 degrees Celsius, while Daegu and Busan begin at minus 11 and minus 9 degrees.

During the day,... Seoul will reach minus 5 degrees, with Gwangju and Busan at minus 2 degrees and 1 degree.

The current cold spell will gradually ease this weekend with rain in the forecast next week.

I'll leave you with the weather conditions around the world.

Parts of the US and Canada are gripped by freezing temperatures as a polar vortex weather system sends the mercury running for cover.

The latest freeze follows a snow storm, which has already blanketed areas of Canada and north-eastern United States.

The weather has played havoc with transport with 3,000 flights cancelled on Monday on top of the thousands that failed to take off over the weekend.

Schools have closed in a number of states and residents are being advised to stay indoors.

Sports fans are a hardy lot and in Wisconsin the 70,000 people who braved the conditions to see the Green Bay Packers play the San Francisco 49ers dressed for the occasion.

Four layers of long johns, two sets of snow pants, four shirts, a sweatshirt, and a coat, said one wrapped up Packer.

Green Bay offered fans free hand warmers, hot coffee and chocolate.

The US is shivering in an arctic blast the like of which it has not seen in the last twenty years.

Bitterly cold temperatures and deep snow have hit the Midwest moving on to Chicago and forecasters say the mega winter storm could last for several days and reach as far south as northern Florida.

Wind chill is the main worry with temperatures set to feel as low as minus 51 degrees Celsius in some places.

Indianapolis mayor, Greg Ballard warned his constituents:

This weather combination that we are seeing right now with all of the snow and the cold is unlike anything that we have seen in decades in this area and I cannot emphasise that enough. The cold really scares me and as such we will have temperatures that are potentially deadly or certainly life-altering so right now we have to be very very careful.

Indeed in such low temperatures exposed skin can freeze in as little as five minutes, warned one doctor.

The big freeze is causing headaches for travellers; trains, planes and cars are all struggling. At the weekend nearly 4,000 flights were cancelled and numerous accidents blocked high ways.

The so-called polar vortex, an anti-clockwise pool of cold dense air is to blame. It moved down from the arctic before dumping 60 cm of snow on parts of Canada.

  • Deep freeze grips Upper Midwest

    1:17

(25 Jan 2019) An arctic wave has wrapped parts of the Midwest in numbing cold, sending temperatures plunging, but forecasters say the worst may be yet to come.
Cold weather advisories were in effect from North Dakota to Ohio, with dangerously cold wind chills that could dip to as low as 45 below zero (negative 42 Celsius) in northern Wisconsin and Minnesota and to 35 below (negative 37 Celsius) in parts of northern Illinois and Iowa.
Some residents in Milwaukee and Chicago took the cold weather in stride.
Chicago resident Laurie Vietz says the cold burned but she was appreciating the scenery. She added: You just have to get out there when you can.
Even colder temperatures are expected next week. The National Weather Service notes that potentially historic cold is possible in northern Illinois starting Tuesday, following several inches of snow, with daytime temperatures below zero and wind chills frequently falling below negative 30 (negative 34.4 Celsius).
