    10 Amazing Fire Tricks!

These are relatively simple tricks that you can perform at home with basics supplies. All of these tricks can be dangerous so please use extreme caution when performing these experiments. Use safety glasses, gloves, well ventilated areas and adult supervision.

    Tricks in the video:

    1. Traveling Flame:

This is a simple yet amazing trick. Some candles contain a chemical called paraffin. Paraffin is petroleum by-product. When you relight the smoke, you're actually lighting the paraffin residue within the smoke. The closer you get the lighter to the candle, the easier it is to relight. It's fun to see just how high you can relight the candle. The version in the video shows the candle being relighted about 6 to 7 inches away.

    2. Rising water:

When the glass is placed over the candle, the flame burns up the oxygen, forming a vacuum. The vacuum sucks the water from the plate into the glass. Other versions of this trick ask for the candle to be attached to the plate but I thought it was cool to see the candle float up.

    3. Crayon candle:

Very simple and fun to do. Hold a flame to the crayon for 15 or 20 seconds and it will light and stay burning for 5 to 10 minutes.

    4. Burning ping pong balls:

Ping pong balls are highly flammable. They are made of celluloid. I was shocked the first time I lit one. It literally bursts into flames. The fumes can be highly toxic so if you perform this trick, do it outside and don't breathe in the fumes.

    5. Candle seesaw:

This is such a fun trick to try. Drill a hole through the middle of a long candle. Be careful not to split the candle. That's why I used a drill with a small bit. Then carefully put a nail through the hole. Balance the candle between 2 glasses and light both ends. Even if the candle starts from a complete standstill, it will eventually start rocking dramatically. As the candle burns it melts the wax and the wax drips off, causing the candle to lose weight. When one end goes down, the flame burns more wax off than the other end. So the bottom end loses weight rapidly, causing the top end to become heavier. It rotates down and the process continues.. If you position the nail perfectly through the center, you can get the candle to flip almost 360 degrees.

    6. Fire in a bottle:

Pour about 1 inch of rubbing alcohol in a long narrow bottle. Shake it up to coat the entire inside, open the lid and light the top. It will light quickly, shooting a flame down into the bottle while making a loud whistling sound.

    7: Singing pipe:

I ordered this pipe from a science based website. You can find it by doing a search for singing pipe. You heat the mesh screen in the bottom of the pipe then hold the pipe upright. The mesh screen is so hot that it gives off a large amount of heat. When the heat rises up the pipe, it creates a flow of air that causes the pipe to resonate, thereby creating a tone. When you tilt the pipe sideways, the flow of air is disrupted, which eliminates to the tone. When you hold the pipe upright again, the tone will return.

    8. Black snake:

Use, 4 parts powdered sugar to 1 part baking soda. Stir and then add a decent amount of rubbing alcohol. All you have to do is light it and watch the magic begin.

    9. Fire tornado:

This is an oldie but a goodie. When the mesh trash can spins, it creates a mini vortex around the flame, which causes the flame to spin. Most versions of this trick are done using a lazy susan, so you have to spin it manually. I thought it would be interesting to try it on a turntable. It works much better with the turntable.

    10. Steel wool fire:

Steel wool contains iron. Simple light the steel wool and watch the magic begin. Be careful when handling steel wool. Use gloves and safety glasses.

Thanks for watching my video. Be careful and have fun!

    1:3:21

Blog post with audio player, show notes, and transcript:

    Patreon:

The modern world is full of technology, and also with anxiety about technology. We worry about robot uprisings and artificial intelligence taking over, and we contemplate what it would mean for a computer to be conscious or truly human. It should probably come as no surprise that these ideas aren’t new to modern society — they go way back, at least to the stories and mythologies of ancient Greece. Today’s guest, Adrienne Mayor, is a folklorist and historian of science, whose recent work has been on robots and artificial humans in ancient mythology. From the bronze warrior Talos to the evil fembot Pandora, mythology is rife with stories of artificial beings. It’s both fun and useful to think about our contemporary concerns in light of these ancient tales.

Adrienne Mayor is a Research Scholar Classics and History and Philosophy of Science at Stanford University. She is also a Berggruen Fellow at Stanford’s Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences. Her work has encompasses fossil traditions in classical antiquity and Native America, the origins of biological weapons, and the historical precursors of the stories of Amazon warriors. In 2009 she was a finalist for the National Book Award.

    Project Inspired By:

Two different friends that let me study the propane torches they made from designs found on the internet. After experimenting independently, I developed the two designs into this hybrid.

    Project History & More Info:

A year after I made my charcoal foundry ( a friend named Chris came by to visit, and to show me a foundry he'd made out of a propane tank, and refractory cement. His was more expensive to construct, but was made to last longer, and he powered it with propane instead of charcoal.

He said the burner plans he followed were the common Ron Reil design, which for some reason I had never heard of.

I bought the plumbing parts from Home Depot with intentions to build the torch, but they just sat on my worktable for months as I worked on developing other projects first.

After a considerable amount of time, a young man named Shadrick came to my house and noticed the plumbing parts on my table and asked if I was making a propane burner. To my surprise, he'd made a propane foundry himself and had been using it to forge steel, melt aluminum, and make knives for over a year.

His assembly was completely different from the one Chris had, and since I really didn't have much idea of how propane burners worked at all, I was interested in reverse engineering the science behind it.

I realized that the purpose of the burner was to mix certain amounts of fuel and air to achieve the hottest temperature possible, and the cleanest burn.

I played with different lengths of tubing, and stumbled on the realization that by controlling the air-flow through the intake port, I could adjust the flame completely, and use any length of pipe I wanted. I also noticed that without a nozzle on the end, the burner wouldn't work.

I quickly developed some prototypes for an air regulator design I made from the lid of a tuna can, and it worked perfectly!

My final design was a hybrid of the two systems, with most of the plumbing parts based around the Ron Reil assembly, and the rest based on the connections I saw on Shad's system.

In this video, our Experiments and Hacks Team performing fire stunt at home to demo how it happens actually in cinema.

DON'T try this at home. We performed with all the precautions and safety measures.
First, we need to collect water in a bowl and mix with soap or any substance it may be soap or shampoo or dishwasher liquid to produce foam. Make the foam and mix perfume to form more foam. I'm using perfume. But in real-time Butane gas is used. In LPG cooking gas 60 % is butane gas and remaining propane gas. Then the resulting foam is actually used for the fire stunts.

  • QuaranTIME Day 7 - Chemical Reactions and Infinite Geometric Series!

    1:58:33

    Print today's notes here:

Our drawing prompt for tomorrow's episode is to make a rainy day card. Fold paper to make the umbrella and then draw someone underneath and tell us what kind of weather is happening! It can be realistic or cloudy with a chance of meatballs style. Have fun!

To have a chance of having your art featured on the show, submit them by sharing them in the album on the Science Mom Facebook Page, or you can also post them to Instagram with the hashtag #ScienceMomSquad. You can also share photos of what you build with our daily engineering challenges - today's challenge is a da Vinci bridge!

We do visual demonstrations because they are engaging and help people learn and understand - and I'm well aware that because of social distancing you may be limiting your trips to the store, or because of panic buying there may be no rubbing alcohol to be found. We work hard to design the engineering challenges and art projects to be things you can do with materials you already have at home.

But, having said all that, I know that some of our viewers really love to recreate the science demonstrations as well, and if that's you, you can find all the supplies we'll be using at:

We hope that younger and older kids will also enjoy the show, but these are the main groups we are considering when we make our show. We'll be streaming Monday-Friday mornings, 8 am-10 am Pacific time, through April 10th, and on that date, we'll take a poll from our viewers and assess our own situation and let you know if and how QuaranTIME will continue!
