    Here's a 3 minute drill for fixing neck hump (or Dowager's hump or sometimes called Buffalo hump).

    Have you ever noticed in the mirror or in a photo of yourself that you have a slight hump at the back of your neck? This hump is often called a “dowager’s hump,” and it’s extremely common.

    This three minute drill is a great way to help fix the poor posture that leads to a neck hump.

    What is a dowager’s hump?
    The literal meaning of the term “dowager” is a dignified elderly widow, but you don’t need to fit this demographic to have a neck hump.

    In fact, the main cause of dowager hump isn’t age, sex, or widowhood but poor posture. As long as you have consistent poor posture, you could develop a dowager’s hump – whether you’re young, old, male or female. And that hump will certainly make you look older.

    Cause of Neck Hump: Poor Posture
    As unsightly and frustrating a dowager’s hump can be, it all comes down to posture. - When our shoulders round forward it can exaggerate how far forward or head goes and if we are not mindful of bringing our shoulders back then what happens is an exaggeration of the kyphotic curve that naturally occurs at the thoracic spine.

    And over time our body adapts to this extra pressure in this area by depositing adipose tissue or fat tissue just at the base of the neck around C7 that bony prominence as a way to protect the spine. And it can become a compounding cycle if we don't address it early, making it even harder to fix down the road.

    The good news is that, in most cases, poor posture is reversible. By correcting the cause of the problem (your posture), your body will adjust and you’ll notice the hump decrease and eventually disappear.

    But when it comes to physical therapy, good change is gradual change. Through a steady progression of consistent exercise, you’ll cultivate correct posture in your body and eliminate your neck hump.

    WHAT IS NECK HUMP?
    You have seven vertebrae in your neck. In instances where the head comes forward, the bottom vertebrae (lowest in your neck) tends to protrude out the back and become a little more prominent. Because this becomes an area of high pressure, your body lays down extra fat in that area to protect it. This gives the appearance of this “neck hump” or “hunchback” posture.

    WHY DO YOU GET NECK HUMP?
    At its core, this “neck hump” is really a posture issue. Your head should normal sit squarely on top of your shoulders, but when it doesn’t that can lead to problems. As your head comes forward and your shoulders start to round inward, your 7th vertebrae becomes more and more pronounced resulting in this “hump” or “bump”. Your body then starts to build up fat tissue around it to protect and cushion it which contributes even more to the problem.

    HOW TO GET RID OF NECK HUMP/HUNCHBACK POSTURE
    The best thing you can do to eliminate this “neck hump” is to correct your posture. If you can get your head seated squarely on top of your neck and over your shoulders, the neck hump will resolve on its own.

    HOW TO CORRECT YOUR NECK POSTURE.
    This is best accomplished with consistent performance of the following three home exercise techniques: vertebrae mobilization, stretching areas of tightness, and strengthening your postural muscles to maintain this good alignment.

    1️⃣ MOBILIZE THE VERTEBRAE
    A simple pair of rolled-up socks works very well. This can be done in supine or standing and I also demonstrate a technique using a foam roller.

    2️⃣ STRETCH TIGHT MUSCLES
    The muscles in your upper neck, chest, and shoulders tend to get tight and pull you forward into a rounded position. Stretching these will help with your neck hump appearance.

    3️⃣ STRENGTHEN POSTURE
    Strengthening the muscles in your back and shoulders will help to keep you in a good position to not only eliminate neck hump now, but prevent it from coming back in the future.

  • How to Get Rid of a Neck Hump at Home

    You probably have seen someone with a slight volume on their neck, close to their nape, and asked yourself what that was.

    It usually reminds us of the Hunchback of Notre Dame and the old witches of fairytales, doesn't it?

    The correct name of this deformity in the upper back is kyphosis. Have you ever heard it before?

    Kyphosis isn't a disease, just the name for the curvature in the upper back.

    When we look at someone's side view, we see four curves in their back: cervical lordosis (a slight back curve), thoracic kyphosis (a front-to-back curve), lumbar lordosis, and sacral kyphosis.

    If you have this issue or know someone who does, know that if not treated, kyphosis can have severe consequences, like hyperkyphosis and vertebral fractures.

    However, if it is still in the beginning, you can get rid of it by correcting any muscle imbalances and changing some of your daily habits.

    Pay attention to your sleeping position
    When sleeping, keep your spine in a position similar to the ideal standing position, with the shoulders low, back straight, knees relaxed, and hips aligned to the shoulders.

    Watch your weight
    Being overweight is one of the factors that cause the neck hump, but it isn't fat that travels to the back of the head.

    Stretch your neck
    Stretching the neck muscles helps eliminate inadequate postures that lead to neck humps, improving your muscular system.

    Strengthen your back muscles
    Experts say that exercises to strengthen the upper part of the body, including shoulders and neck, are good to prevent and treat neck humps.

    Self-massage
    If you have a neck hump, your neck muscles are probably too tense. Release them doing the technique we will show you in this video.

    And lastly, fix your posture!
    The neck hump is usually accompanied by a posture where the head is projected to the front, beyond its normal alignment. In this case, you have almost 10 extra pounds of strength for every inch of curvature.

    Repeatedly looking down at the computer, phone or book can begin to impact our posture. This head-forward posture applies strain to our neck and weakens upper back muscles, creating a hump at the base of the neck. For many, this can begin to affect self-confidence.

    In part two of this series, we'll go over some exercises to strengthen the upper back muscles. With consistency, this routine can help to correct that head-forward posture and reduce the neck hump. You'll just need a yoga mat!
