    As early as Wednesday, May 5, the SpaceX team will attempt a high-altitude flight test of Starship serial number 15 (SN15) – our fifth high-altitude flight test of a Starship prototype from Starbase in Texas. SN15 has vehicle improvements across structures, avionics and software, and the engines that will allow more speed and efficiency throughout production and flight: specifically, a new enhanced avionics suite, updated propellant architecture in the aft skirt, and a new Raptor engine design and configuration.

    Similar to previous high-altitude flight tests of Starship, SN15 will be powered through ascent by three Raptor engines, each shutting down in sequence prior to the vehicle reaching apogee – approximately 10 km in altitude. SN15 will perform a propellant transition to the internal header tanks, which hold landing propellant, before reorienting itself for reentry and a controlled aerodynamic descent.

    The Starship prototype will descend under active aerodynamic control, accomplished by independent movement of two forward and two aft flaps on the vehicle. All four flaps are actuated by an onboard flight computer to control Starship’s attitude during flight and enable precise landing at the intended location. SN15’s Raptor engines will then reignite as the vehicle attempts a landing flip maneuver immediately before touching down on the landing pad adjacent to the launch mount.

    A controlled aerodynamic descent with body flaps and vertical landing capability, combined with in-space refilling, are critical to landing Starship at destinations across the solar system where prepared surfaces or runways do not exist, and returning to Earth. This capability will enable a fully reusable transportation system designed to carry both crew and cargo on long-duration, interplanetary flights and help humanity return to the Moon, and travel to Mars and beyond.

  • SpaceX Starship SN15 10km High Altitude Test Flight ???? LIVE

    Starship SN15, equipped with three sea-level Raptor engines will attempt a high-altitude hop at SpaceX's development and launch site in Boca Chica, Texas. For this test, the vehicle will ascend to an altitude of approximately 10km, before moving from a vertical orientation (as on ascent), to horizontal orientation, in which the broadside (+ z) of the vehicle is oriented towards the ground. At this point, Starship will attempt an unpowered return to launch site (RTLS), using its aerodynamic control surfaces (ACS) to adjust its attitude and fly a course back to the landing pad. In the final stages of the descent, two of the three Raptor engines will ignite to transition the vehicle to a vertical orientation and perform a propulsive landing.

    The flight profile is likely to follow closely the previous Starship SN8, Starship SN9, Starship SN10, and Starship SN11 hop tests (hopefully with a slightly less fiery landing). The exact launch time may not be known until just a few minutes before launch, and will be preceded by a local siren about 10 minutes ahead of time.

  • SN15: SpaceX attempts latest flight test of its Starship prototype

    The saying is 5th time's a charm, right? Well, it is for SpaceX as the company is chasing down the first non-explosive landing of its Starship prototype.

    SN15 marks the company's fifth test of the prototype that hopes to eventually complete Mars missions. A variation of the model being tested in Boca Chica will also be responsible for landing U.S. astronauts back on the Moon.

    SpaceX was awarded a contract by NASA on April 16 to design and develop a human landing system for its Artemis program.

    But first, they have to stop exploding. This is the unfortunate fate that SN8 to SN11 have met since December 2020 when each ended in some variation of a fiery explosion.

    Like prototypes in the past, SN15 will attempt to lift off the pad, hover above the ground for several minutes and then cut off its Raptor engines for descent. The goal is then to reignite its engines and reorient itself to attempt a vertical landing.

    On Wednesday, March 3, Starship serial number (SN10) successfully completed SpaceX’s third high-altitude flight test of a Starship prototype from our site in Cameron County, Texas.

    Similar to the high-altitude flight tests of Starship SN8 and SN9, SN10 was powered through ascent by three Raptor engines, each shutting down in sequence prior to the vehicle reaching apogee – approximately 10 km in altitude. SN10 performed a propellant transition to the internal header tanks, which hold landing propellant, before reorienting itself for reentry and a controlled aerodynamic descent.

    The Starship prototype descended under active aerodynamic control, accomplished by independent movement of two forward and two aft flaps on the vehicle. All four flaps were actuated by an onboard flight computer to control Starship’s attitude during flight and enabled a precise landing at the intended location. SN10’s Raptor engines reignited as the vehicle performed the landing flip maneuver immediately before successfully touching down on the landing pad!

    As if the flight test was not exciting enough, SN10 experienced a rapid unscheduled disassembly shortly after landing. These test flights are all about improving our understanding and development of a fully reusable transportation system designed to carry both crew and cargo on long-duration interplanetary flights, and help humanity return to the Moon, and travel to Mars and beyond.

  • SpaceX’s Starship SN15 successfully lands in test flight

    SpaceX successfully launched and landed its Starship prototype, the SN15, on Wednesday in south Texas a day after its original planned launch was scrubbed at the last minute.

    The latest iteration of the Starship to take to the sky is part of a line of next-generation boosters designed to transport cargo and passengers to the moon and Mars in the future. The previous four prototypes all successfully reached the desired altitude but crashed at landing.

    While a small fire could be seen at the base of the ship after it landed, a SpaceX official said it was not unusual given the methane fuel the ship was carrying, but stressed it was successfully launched and landed.

    05.05.2021 After two other scrubbed launches the third was a charm. At 05:24 PM local time SpaceX Boca Chica, Texas successfully launched and landed their Starship SN15. After unfavorable weather conditions and minor hardware and software glitches the time finally came. SN15 roared to life with three raptors and soared through the low cloud ceiling which obscured most of the test activity. Luckily there was enough visibility to capture both the launch and the landing. During the ascent which was not visible you can see the tracking station doing its job as it follows the vehicle up to apogee and then back to the landing pad.

    SpaceX have successfully launched and landed their Starship SN15 prototype at Boca Chica in Texas.

    Liftoff took place at 22:25 UTC, May 5th 2021 with landing occurring 6 minutes later on the landing pad.

    This was the first successful landing with the fire seen after landing put out shortly after video ended.

    SpaceX team will possibly make the first attempt of a high-altitude suborbital flight test of Starship SN15 from SpaceX Launch site in Boca Chica, Texas on May 5, 2021. The schedule is dynamic and likely to change, as is the case with all development testing. This is the fourth high-altitude 10K flight of a SpaceX Starship prototype.

    The SpaceX Starship system is a fully-reusable, two-stage-to-orbit, super heavy-lift launch vehicle under development by SpaceX since 2012, as a self-funded private spaceflight project.

  • Starship | SN11 | High-Altitude Flight Test

    As early as Tuesday, March 30, the SpaceX team will attempt a high-altitude flight test of Starship serial number 11 (SN11) – our fourth high-altitude flight test of a Starship prototype from Starbase in Texas. Similar to previous high-altitude flight tests of Starship, SN11 will be powered through ascent by three Raptor engines, each shutting down in sequence prior to the vehicle reaching apogee – approximately 10 km in altitude. SN11 will perform a propellant transition to the internal header tanks, which hold landing propellant, before reorienting itself for reentry and a controlled aerodynamic descent.

    The Starship prototype will descend under active aerodynamic control, accomplished by independent movement of two forward and two aft flaps on the vehicle. All four flaps are actuated by an onboard flight computer to control Starship’s attitude during flight and enable precise landing at the intended location. SN11’s Raptor engines will then reignite as the vehicle attempts a landing flip maneuver immediately before touching down on the landing pad adjacent to the launch mount.

    A controlled aerodynamic descent with body flaps and vertical landing capability, combined with in-space refilling, are critical to landing Starship at destinations across the solar system where prepared surfaces or runways do not exist, and returning to Earth. This capability will enable a fully reusable transportation system designed to carry both crew and cargo on long-duration, interplanetary flights and help humanity return to the Moon, and travel to Mars and beyond.

    SN15 is the evolution of the Starship prototypes and comes with a major update.

    On May 5, 2021 SpaceX made first Starship SN15 clean landing without explosion flying to altitude of 10km hop. During flight SN15 was powered through ascent by three Raptor engines, each shutting down in sequence prior to the vehicle reaching apogee – approximately 10 km in altitude.   • SpaceX Starship Rocket Sticks Landing After Test Flight

    SpaceX’s Starship SN15 prototype successfully landed after completing a test flight from the company’s launch site in Boca Chica, Texas, on May 5.

    The spacecraft performed a successful six-minute test flight, prompting SpaceX founder Elon Musk to take to Twitter, posting that the landing was “nominal”, or successful.

    A similar test flight of the Starship SN10 in early March ended with fiery explosions shortly after the craft landed.

    After A week of preparation the latest Starship Prototype SN15 successfully demonstrated the complete landing maneuver required for Starship to operate. The flight was mostly hidden behind a layer of clouds which blocked cameras on the ground, and because the onboard cameras weren't delivering video data as expected.
    However after a flight to 10 kilometers and a descent in a high drag belly flop orientation the vehicle relit its engines, returned to the vertical and carefully came to a stop on the landing pad.

    This is a full in-game simulation & prediction of the upcoming SN15 flight.

    The physics and aerodynamics for this video are fully simulated in realtime - the flight is controlled by some avionic software which I plan to document and release over the next week to show how it works.

    Hopefully we'll see a successful landing of SN15 this week!

    Some notes:
    - We don't yet know the full flight profile of SN15, this is my best guess!
    - Avionic doesn't simulate RCS thrusters yet, so some of the more dynamic parts of the flight (bellyflop entry, flip, and landing) will be different.
    - The engine downselect is particularly late to give more control authority after the flip due to lack of RCS - meaning we lose more vertical velocity than we should during the flip.
    - Depending on Raptor updates, we might see a two-engine landing for the real SN15 flight this week

    As early as Wednesday, May 5, the SpaceX team will attempt a high-altitude flight test of Starship serial number 15 (SN15) – our fifth high-altitude flight test of a Starship prototype from Starbase in Texas. SN15 has vehicle improvements across structures, avionics and software, and the engines that will allow more speed and efficiency throughout production and flight: specifically, a new enhanced avionics suite, updated propellant architecture in the aft skirt, and a new Raptor engine design and configuration.

    Similar to previous high-altitude flight tests of Starship, SN15 will be powered through ascent by three Raptor engines, each shutting down in sequence prior to the vehicle reaching apogee – approximately 10 km in altitude. SN15 will perform a propellant transition to the internal header tanks, which hold landing propellant, before reorienting itself for reentry and a controlled aerodynamic descent.

    The Starship prototype will descend under active aerodynamic control, accomplished by independent movement of two forward and two aft flaps on the vehicle. All four flaps are actuated by an onboard flight computer to control Starship’s attitude during flight and enable precise landing at the intended location. SN15’s Raptor engines will then reignite as the vehicle attempts a landing flip maneuver immediately before touching down on the landing pad adjacent to the launch mount.

    A controlled aerodynamic descent with body flaps and vertical landing capability, combined with in-space refilling, are critical to landing Starship at destinations across the solar system where prepared surfaces or runways do not exist, and returning to Earth. This capability will enable a fully reusable transportation system designed to carry both crew and cargo on long-duration, interplanetary flights and help humanity return to the Moon, and travel to Mars and beyond.
