Mega Manufacturing: Airbus A350 | 4K Engineering Documentary

Assembled in France using millions of components made throughout Europe: The A350 is the most modern commercial aircraft in the world.

The Airbus A 350: the most modern commercial aircraft in the world. It takes 1800 highly-skilled specialists in Toulouse, France, and 2.5 million individual parts, delivered from all over the world, to assemble this masterpiece of aeronautic engineering. The goal: An aircraft with minimal consumption and maximum range. 53 percent of the Aircraft consist of a modern ultra-light composite material. But the innovative material also requires entirely new manufacturing processes. A challenge for the aircraft manufacturers in Toulouse. And the final assembly is preceded by a logistical masterpiece: The individual parts of the aircraft travel from various Airbus plants in Europe to Toulouse: the front and centre sections from Saint-Nazaire in France, the tail section from Hamburg, the wings from Broughton in Wales and Bremen, and the tail fin from Getafe in Spain. The factory in Toulouse is supplied with these parts by a specially developed transport aircraft, the Beluga. Several times a day, five of these machines commute between the various plants and bring supplies for production seven days a week from early in the morning until midnight. And the journey of the components is not over in Toulouse. By the time the A350 is fully assembled it will have passed through seven hangars or stations. Given the extremely high number of components that have to be assembled and the large number of different suppliers, there are a lot of risk factors involved in the production of the A350. And the pressure is high: The modern aircraft is extremely popular with airlines, with 890 pending orders to date. Ten aircraft of the A350 have to leave the factory every month no matter what.

  • Megastructures Airbus A380

    50:09

The National Geographic documentary series titled Megastructures now shifts its focus on to aeronautical wonder called the Airbus A380. Its intricate design attracted hounds of journalists and media attention on its maiden flight. It outclassed a regular 747 in not only height, width and size, but was armed with state-of-the-art equipment that would put any sophisticated commercial plane to shame. Moreover, the plane had an even bigger passenger capacity than regular planes. This episode of Megastructures, the National Geographic documentary series describes the daunting challenge engineers were faced with in designing this gigantic plane that required super-light material and the same amount of focus to design four high-power engines that would then propel this gigantic structure through the sky.

The design of this commercial aviation marveled was taken off the drawing board with the help of investments that amounted to an overwhelming 12 Billion Dollar. The development of this venture was meant to take the air travel experience to the next level and was designed specifically for customers, who wanted to be pampered during a long and tiring journey. Airbus A380, the National Geographic documentary of Megastructures series also looks at a very crucial question in the eye regarding the practical usage and cost involved in maintaining a plane like this. With graphic representations and an engaging visual, the National Geographic documentary evokes both awe and skepticism in its viewers as they evaluate the revolution this aircraft will prompt in the field of aviation.

It gives in-depth information regarding the plane's construction and production of every segment that was put together and imported from every part of the world. It was a breathtaking transition from the normal A320 to the massive A380 airbus. The technicians and engineers worked day and night to put the entire plane together and watched it take to the sky. It is all recorded meticulously in this educational National Geographic documentary of Megastructures series that sheds light on stepping stone in aerospace history. Well-conceived and engrossing, the documentary film entails detailed interviews that further elaborate upon every aspect of the production and the amount of effort that took to make this monster fly

Mega Manufacturing: The Porsche Manufacturer | 4K Engineering Documentary

The Porsche Macan: Mass car production with a level of customization that comes close to manufacturing.

The Porsche Macan: the most successful horse in the stable of this legendary sports car manufacturer. A compact SUV, combining off-road qualities and everyday versatility with the DNA of a sports car. In its Leipzig factory Porsche produces with 4,300 employees over 90,000 Macan vehicles per year. Every single vehicle: absolutely individual and bespoke manufactured to order. A masterpiece of logistics and engineering design. Retaining their outstanding quality and delivering volume – a balancing act.

Everything begins with the fabrication of the body. Eight hours is all they need for the entire production of a fully galvanized aluminum-steel car body. On more than 35 thousand square meters, a 400-strong robot army supported by people turn pure sheet metal into sub-frames. Around the clock. A perfectly synchronized spectacle with the precision of a clockwork in perpetual motion.

Each individual Macan car body is checked with utmost precision. The same applies to the paint surface and the assembled car. The extent of the individual quality control is unique in mass production – and for Porsche, an absolute necessity.

Since the opening of the Leipzig factory, Porsche has invested over EUR 1.3 billion in this facility – and it is always constantly expanding. Protecting the environment is one key aspect of the investments. Energy is saved in the halls through efficient robotic use, and produced on the rooftops from natural solar energy. The photovoltaic system consists of more than 17,500 modules. Immediately behind the assembly halls and the company's own circular track, there is an entirely different world! Here, Porsche has created ecological compensation areas for the sealed ground space. 25 Exmoor ponies and 75 aurochs graze on this managed eco-system.

The team has only 37 days for loading in two ports and travelling once around half of the globe. To be able to transport the entire cargo, the crew even has to build another level altogether – in the middle of the deck.

It’ll be an ongoing battle for five straight weeks. Against time. And against weather.

The load: Five gigantic nacelles, each as heavy as a Boeing 747 and nine 75-meter-long blades. All these wind park components have been specially designed to fit together – and can only be replaced with a huge effort. Any damage to the cladding or the electronics could delay construction of the whole wind park project by months.

The loading process is extremely complicate and has been developed especially for this transport! So no one has any experience with it. The crew has to trust the plans of the engineers. And they don’t have ANY margin of error. Just a couple centimeters too far to the left or right would mean: everything out again.
A project never before undertaken – anywhere in the world. And no one knows if the risky plan will prove successful in the end.
A mega transport in the superlative. Over two thousand two hundred tons of cargo on three levels. Below deck, on deck, and above deck.

Megastructures - World’s Longest Subsea Pipeline | Engineering Documentary

Megastructures - The World’s Most Extreme Railway:

By two thousand and eight, Norway will be connected to the United Kingdom via a 1200 km super pipeline—the longest subsea pipeline in the world. But this connection is only a part of an enormous plan to tap into Norway’s second largest gas deposit, capable of providing 20% of the UK’s gas needs for decades to come. Located 3 km below the ocean’s surface and 120 km offshore, the deposit is beyond the reach of humans and all of the construction has to be completed by robots working against strong underwater currents, sub-zero temperatures and extreme wind and wave conditions. When tapped, the gas will be transported to one of the largest automated gas processing plants to prepare it for shipment to U.K. Each phase will put ingenuity and engineering to the ultimate test.

    16:33

    Mega Manufacturing: Airbus A350 - PART 3 | 4K Engineering Documentary

Airbus A350 Full Documentary - Engineering and Building the World's Largest Passenger AirPlane

The Airbus A350 XWB is a family of long-range, twin-engine wide-body jet airliners developed by European aircraft manufacturer Airbus. The A350 is the first Airbus aircraft with both fuselage and wing structures made primarily of carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer.[8] Its variants seat 280 to 366 passengers in typical three-class seating layouts.[9] The A350 is positioned to succeed the A340, and compete with the Boeing 787 and 777.

The A350 was originally conceived in 2004, pairing the A330's fuselage with new aerodynamics features and engines. In 2006, Airbus redesigned the aircraft in response to criticism from several major prospective customers and renamed it the A350 XWB (extra wide body). Development costs are estimated at €11 billion (US$15 billion or £9.5 billion).[6] As of March 2017, Airbus had received 821 orders for A350s from 46 customers worldwide.[5] The prototype A350 first flew on 14 June 2013 from Toulouse, France. Type certification from the European Aviation Safety Agency was received in September 2014 and certification from the Federal Aviation Administration two months later. On 15 January 2015, the A350 entered service with Qatar Airways, the type's launch customer

This is a full documentary on how the new Airbus A400M military plane is made in Airbus plant.

The Airbus A400M Atlas is a European four-engine turboprop military transport aircraft. It was designed by Airbus Military (now Airbus Defence and Space) as a tactical airlifter with strategic capabilities to replace older transport aircraft, such as the Transall C-160 and the Lockheed C-130 Hercules.

The A400M is between the C-130 and the Boeing C-17 in size; it can carry heavier loads than the C-130 and is able to use rough landing strips. Along with the transport role, the A400M can perform aerial refueling and medical evacuation when fitted with appropriate equipment.

The A400M made its first flight on 11 December 2009. The first production aircraft was delivered to the French Air Force in August 2013 and entered into service a year after. The A400M already has seen operational use with the French and Turkish Air Forces in Afghanistan, the Central African Republic, African Sahel Region, Mali and in the Middle East to support the air operations over Iraq and Syria.

Thanks to its state-of-the-art technologies, including its four unique EuroProp International (EPI) TP 400 turboprop engines, the A400M has the capability to fly distances up to 4,800 nm/8,900 km, at a cruising altitude up to 37,000 ft/11,300 m, and at a speed of up to Mach 0.72, very similar to that of a turbofan powered airlifter. It can even fly up to 40,000 ft/12,200 m for special operations.

This gives the potential for strategic/logistic missions. Flying faster, the A400M can respond more rapidly to crises because greater distances can be flown in one crew duty day. Also, as it can fly higher, the aircraft can cruise above poor weather and turbulence found at medium altitudes, resulting in less fatigue for the crews, passengers or troops alike.

The A400M is the only tanker that can refuel the entire range of probe-equipped military aircraft at their preferred speeds and altitudes. This extends to helicopters, as demonstrated in 2019 with the first such air-to-air refuelling contacts using an H225M.

Thanks to its powerful turboprops, the A400M can fly both at the low speeds and low altitudes to refuel slow receivers as well as at higher speeds and altitudes of about 300 knots and altitudes around 25,000 ft. These are typically used for refuelling of fast jets, including fighters (such as the Eurofighter) or larger aircraft (such as the C295) or even another A400M for buddy refuelling.
