National Geographic Documentary - Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport

Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport (IATA: ATL, ICAO: KATL, FAA LID: ATL), also known as Atlanta Airport, Hartsfield, or Hartsfield–Jackson, is an international airport located 7 miles (11 km) south of Atlanta's central business district, in the U.S. state of Georgia. It is named after former Atlanta mayors William B. Hartsfield and Maynard Jackson. The airport has 209 domestic and international gates.ATL covers 4,700 acres (1,902 ha) of land and has five parallel runways.

The airport has international service within North America and to countries in South America, Central America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. As an international gateway to the United States, Hartsfield–Jackson ranks sixth. Many of the nearly one million flights are domestic flights from within the United States, where the airport serves as a major hub for travel throughout the southeastern region of the country.

Atlanta has been the world's busiest airport by passenger traffic since 1998; and by number of landings and takeoffs from 2005 to 2013, losing that title to Chicago–O'Hare in 2014, but regaining it a year later.[4][5] Hartsfield–Jackson held its ranking as the world's busiest airport in 2012, both in passengers and number of flights, by accommodating 100 million passengers (more than 260,000 passengers daily) and 950,119 flights.

Hartsfield–Jackson is the primary hub of Delta, and is a focus city for low-cost carriers Frontier, Southwest, and Spirit. With just over 1,000 flights a day, the Delta hub is the world's largest hub.Delta Air Lines flew 75.4% of the airport's passengers in February 2016, Southwest flew 9.2%, and American Airlines flew 2.5%.In addition to hosting Delta corporate headquarters, Hartsfield–Jackson is also the home of Delta's Technical Operations Center, which is the airline's primary maintenance, repair and overhaul arm.

The airport is mostly in unincorporated areas in Fulton and Clayton counties. However, the airport spills into the city limits of Atlanta, College Park, and Hapeville. The airport's domestic terminal is served by MARTA's Red and Gold rail lines.

  • Nuclear Reactor Cooling Towers | Building Demolition | BlowDown | S01 E01| Free Documentary

    50:03

    Nuclear Reactor Cooling Towers Demolition:
Blowdown is an explosive four part building demolition series profiling some of the most challenging projects of Controlled Demolition Inc of Phoenix, Maryland. Each of the structures, some notable, others notorious is unique and present the team with challenges ranging from the structural, to the
explosive and to the bureaucratic. In episode one, the team from CDI travels to Sellafield, England to take down four outdated cooling towers on the site of the world’s first commercial nuclear
reactor. Sellafield has a long history of nuclear incidents and mishaps dating back to the infamous Windscale Fire in 1957. Sellafield now stores and treats nuclear waste and is home to 90% of Britain’s industrial radioactivity. The tension is increased by the fact that explosives have never been used on an active nuclear site in the United Kingdom before and it has taken four years to overcome the bureaucratic hurdles. The subjects of the film are four nuclear cooling towers. Each one is 88 m high and has an estimated mass of 5,200 tons. Of particular concern is the fact that the towers are only 40 meters away from a nuclear fuel handling plant. There has been a steady deterioration of the towers and there is the concern of an inadvertent collapse. Explosive demolition has been determined to be the safest and most cost effective means of removing the towers.
Each of the towers will be loaded with three sets of explosives. The first set will be in the legs of the towers, encircling 60% of the circumference. The second set will be set in a predrilled band around the same 60% approximately 20 m up. Charges will also be loaded into 3 vertical slots about 10 meters high which should cause the concrete shells of the towers to deform, rotate and collapse within the drop zone.

With just 10 days to load all four towers, the team struggles safely load and rig more than 4,500 charges and time the explosions to minimize the risks to the surrounding site. The team must evaluate each risk, real or imagined and account for it in the plan. Major concerns are projectiles, ground vibration and air over pressure that could compromise operations at the nuclear facility.

Mega Manufacturing: Airbus A350 | 4K Engineering Documentary

Assembled in France using millions of components made throughout Europe: The A350 is the most modern commercial aircraft in the world.

The Airbus A 350: the most modern commercial aircraft in the world. It takes 1800 highly-skilled specialists in Toulouse, France, and 2.5 million individual parts, delivered from all over the world, to assemble this masterpiece of aeronautic engineering. The goal: An aircraft with minimal consumption and maximum range. 53 percent of the Aircraft consist of a modern ultra-light composite material. But the innovative material also requires entirely new manufacturing processes. A challenge for the aircraft manufacturers in Toulouse. And the final assembly is preceded by a logistical masterpiece: The individual parts of the aircraft travel from various Airbus plants in Europe to Toulouse: the front and centre sections from Saint-Nazaire in France, the tail section from Hamburg, the wings from Broughton in Wales and Bremen, and the tail fin from Getafe in Spain. The factory in Toulouse is supplied with these parts by a specially developed transport aircraft, the Beluga. Several times a day, five of these machines commute between the various plants and bring supplies for production seven days a week from early in the morning until midnight. And the journey of the components is not over in Toulouse. By the time the A350 is fully assembled it will have passed through seven hangars or stations. Given the extremely high number of components that have to be assembled and the large number of different suppliers, there are a lot of risk factors involved in the production of the A350. And the pressure is high: The modern aircraft is extremely popular with airlines, with 890 pending orders to date. Ten aircraft of the A350 have to leave the factory every month no matter what.

  • Most Dangerous Ways To School | HIMALAYA | Free Documentary

    48:02

Twice a year the forbidding journey to the boarding school is necessary. Father Latak, looks to the sky and attempts to predict how the weather will develop. Only when he is sure that no storm is brewing, he starts to prepare the children for the trip over the river. It is a route that is so notorious, that it even has a name: Chadar- the path over the cloak of ice. One last time, his ten year old son Motup, plays in front of their hut. Motup is one of the few kids who regularly leave the village in order to attend one of the the better schools in town. Then the family gets ready for the long trip. The mother has sewn thick wool socks for the father and the children, and Tebean prayers and mantras are recited for protection along the way. Then the trip begins, where the children muss trust completely the experience and skill of their father.

The first steps, only a few kilometres until the frozen river, seem easy for the family. But father Latak recognizes immediately that the spring has come early this year and the sun has already began to compromise the ice. This is not a good sign, since the thinner the ice the more dangerous the trip becomes. Latak goes before the children and tests with a stick before each step on the ice. Often the ice cracks a bit, but the ice remains whole. Latak knows that no one should travel the Chadar without a good reason. But the education of the children is a good enough reason to take on the risks involved.
He knows that if he goes first and the ice carries his weight, that it will also carry the weight of the children. If it does not, it will be he that will fall in the icy water and not his two children. At the same time, Latak, Motup and the other members of the crew must keep a close eye on the mountains. The massive mountain ranges on both sides of them seem to be a scene form a picture book, peaceful and lordly. But there is danger lurking. At any given time, an avalanche can break out. Many times before people have been caught by avalanches here.

In the mean time the sun has already thawed the middle of the river. But since there are steep rocks right and left, Latak must now search for a new path for them to continue on. He leaves Motup behind him and luckily finds a way. It is a 20 cm wide path on the rocks at the edge of the river, and up to ten meters high.

They need almost an hour, skipping from rock to rock until they finally reach an area where the river is again covered with ice. Now they must find a place to set up camp as soon as possible before it becomes dark and the temperatures sink to as low as -30 degrees Celsius. Latak knows a cave where they will be protected and finally be able to get some rest. They must gather their strength because the most dangerous part of the Chadar still lies before them.

The ice is almost completely melted. Only a 50 cm wide strip borders right and left the ice-cold water, making the river absolutely impassible. Rocky overhangs above the ice block the way. Father and son must now crawl its way to school. Father Latak tests his way over the ice on his belly. After any progress made, he pulls his son by their hands to him.

There are countless dangerous situations that make this way to school so unpredictable. But after four days it is over, they have reached their goal; the city of Leh and the school.

Just south of Colorado Springs is one of the most famous military bases in the world, but you can’t see it. It sits one mile inside of the granite Cheyenne Mountain, 2,000 feet down from the surface.

Himalayan salt doesn't come from the Himalayas. It's mined deep inside the mountains of Pakistan at the Khewra Salt Mine. The pink rocks are turned into table salt, lamps, and statues, sold at a premium in Western countries. But despite pink salt's growing popularity abroad, Pakistan, historically, has seen little of the profits.

  • Why Planes Dont Fly Over the Pacific Ocean

    8:47

Why do airlines avoid the Pacific Ocean? You might think it was a safety issue. The Pacific is the largest and deepest of the world’s oceans. If a plane encounters a problem over a seemingly endless and bottomless pond of water, the pilots are going to have a rough time finding a safe spot to set her down.

Guessing that it is a safety precaution wouldn't be entirely wrong. When planning a route, many pilots prefer to maximize the number of airports along their path. Emergencies are incredibly rare relative to how many planes take to the skies every day. That said, it isn’t the main reason airlines tend to avoid making a straight shot east to west...

    #planes #aviation #brightside

    SUMMARY:
    - When planning a route, many pilots prefer to maximize the number of airports along their path.
    - Excluding special circumstances such as passing through the jet streams or other meteorological concerns, the fastest route is almost always the one closest to a straight line.
    - On a 2D map, making a giant rainbow to avoid the Pacific Ocean looks like a much longer route. But since the Earth is a sphere, a straight line is going to look very different in three-dimensional spaces.
    - The combination of the two factors, the curvature of the Earth and its extra equatorial width, mean that curving toward the poles is a shorter distance than flying (what seems like on a map) “straight” across!
    - Another reason planes will sometimes brave an oceanic voyage is to take advantage of the smoother ride. Even in clear weather, there’s much less turbulence over water than over land.
    - The other primary consideration for determining flight paths are air currents, namely the jet streams. These high-altitude air currents exist near the top of the troposphere.
    - There are 4 main jet streams, 2 in each hemisphere, and thanks to the Earth’s rotation, they mostly flow west to east.
    - Flying with a jet stream can shave several hours off of a trip, but flying into it can slow the plane down considerably.
    - It’s also worth noting the risks associated with jet streams. The biggest hazard is a kind of turbulence known as clear-air turbulence, which occurs along the edges of the streams.
    - The jet stream mostly affects things tens of thousands of feet in the air, and the curvature of the Earth doesn’t really matter unless you’re traveling hundreds of miles per hour over vast distances.

  • Your Favorite HGTV Shows Are All Fake & Heres How You Can Tell

    11:03

Though HGTV is prime weekend binge watching, it's no secret that the channel's popular home and renovation shows might not be what they seem. And we're not just talking about the phony house-hunting scenarios, or the obviously manufactured drama. Still don't believe us? Hold onto your shiplap, here the reasons these HGTV shows are totally fake.

Love It or List It combines the house hunt and renovation genres, but with a twist: At the end of each episode, homeowners decide to either live in their updated home or sell it and move into an upgrade.

But according to a Redditor who claims their aunt and uncle appeared on the show, producers actually had them record both endings, and the network chose to air its favorite. The Redditor also claims the show portrayed said aunt and uncle as having listed their home, but in reality, they stayed put. That story may or may not be true, but there have also been real-world legal ramifications from the show's shenanigans.

In 2016, Deena Murphy and Timothy Sullivan from North Carolina sued the show citing a variety of complaints, according to The Miami Herald. Murphy and Sullivan alleged the show misappropriated their renovation funds and used a subpar contractor who did questionable work. The lawsuit stated,

The show is scripted, with 'roles' and reactions assigned to the various performers and participants, including the homeowners… These characters are actors or television personalities playing a role for the camera, and in this case none of them played more than a casual role in the actual renovation process.

We're guessing they didn't love it.
