  • Giants of the Sea - Containerships for more than 8.000 containers

    27:39

Container turnover was growing by about 15% every year until 2008. The industry was booming. The first container ship was able to carry just 700 standard containers (TEU). Giants with a carrying capacity of 8,450 TEU are currently being built and an 18,000 TEU ship has already been designed as part of a Dutch study. How big will the container giants of the future be?

We show the construction of one of the largest container ships in Japan, take part at the first test voyage in the Japanese Sea and look over the shoulder of the shipbuilders. We show how the technicians crawl through the 93,000 hp diesel and how they control the paint coats under the colossus in the dry dock.
Which technical problems arise during the construction of ever larger ships and what changes are there for the crew? Can the giants of the future continue to reach German ports with their draught? Will the ports master the logistical challenges?

Before the operation, surveys of the bottom at the sea were done, and due to shallow water, a mooring arrangement with spacer barges were necessary to unload the engines successfully.

  • Koreas top three shipbuilders take top spots in terms of order backlog

    1:04

글로벌 불황에도 韓조선소 수주잔량 세계 1~3위 유지
Despite a global slowdown,... Korea's shipbuilders are among the main players when it comes to order backlog.
According to global research firm Clarkson Research Services,... Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering ranked number one as of the end of January,... with an order backlog of six-point-six million compensated gross tons to build 99 ships.
It was followed by Japan's Imabari Shipbuilding with about six million CGTs,... and Hyundai Heavy Industries with five-point-four million.
Samsung Heavy Industries came in at fourth place.
However, industry officials say that,... despite Korean firms filling the top ranks,... it's worrisome that the order backlog is only sustainable for about a year.
In fact, local shipyards have been suffering from a decline in new orders,... amid an industry-wide slump and increased costs.
Korea's top three shipbuilders posted a combined operating loss of over seven billion U.S. dollars in 2015.

  • Prospects over Koreas shipbuilding industry differ

    1:42

조선업 구조조정 2라운드... 호황 올 때까지 버텨야 vs. 버틸 수있는 체력 없어
South Korea's top three shipbuilders laid out their plans for restructuring over the weekend.
After digesting the proposals, experts have been having their say about the best course of action to take.
    Hwang Ji-hye reports.
To bail out or to downsize?
That's the question that remains over the government's corporate restructuring drive, especially in the shipbuilding industry,... a once golden sector that's been struggling to cope with slowing global demand and low oil prices.
After the nation's three largest shipbuilders -- Hyundai Heavy Industries, Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering... and Samsung Heavy Industries -- submitted their restructuring plans to creditors over the weekend,... some experts say the industry has room to revive itself and that plans have to focus on riding out the current slump.
The firms' restructuring schemes largely include layoffs and multi-billion dollar asset sales.
They say that,... if the companies can weather through the next two to three years,... they could again stand as industry leaders,... stressing that drastic job cuts could deteriorate their competitive edge.
But this is under the assumption global demand will recover in the coming years.
Some analysts even doubt that Korean shipbuilders will start posting profits when demand picks up... as they've been posting such massive losses and will do so for the next couple of years.
They say the companies' offshore energy projects definitely need restructuring since they've been identified as the main cause of the trio's swelling losses.

The oil tanker FSO Safer has more than 1 million barrels of oil on it. The ship is so old and not maintained that at any moment now, it could explode or break, leaking gallons of crude oil in the Red Sea.

It would be a massive oil spill, one of the biggest, destroying marine life and source of food for the Yemeni people.

The United Nations knows about the possible disaster for more than a year now but has done little to nothing so far. And time is running out.
