  • Gigantic Overseas Autoliner | Mega Transports | Free Documentary

    48:14

A transport to the other side of the globe. The “Höegh Trapper” is the largest automobile transporter in the world. Two hundred meters long, thirty-six meters wide. But the major attraction is actually behind the steel hull: A gigantic cargo area: In total over seventy-one thousand square meters. Enough room for eight-thousand-five-hundred cars. And hundreds of the so-called “High- and Heavies”: Gigantic machines of any kind.
Her journey takes the fully loaded “Trapper” on a journey covering
28,000 kilometers. The starting point: Antwerp in Belgium. Here, Port Captain Per Henningsen has to load 1,000 cars in record time – only 16 hours. Next stop: Bremerhaven, in Germany. Besides 2,000 cars here,
Per has to load 200 high and heavy units – one of which has him
worrying more than usual. He doesn’t know the exact measurements of the mysterious cargo – will it fit into the Trapper? From Bremerhaven, the journey continues to England, France, and Spain, and then out onto the expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. From there across the pond to ports in the US and Jamaica, through the Panama Canal onto the Pacific and all the way to New Zealand and Australia…All that in just fifty days! The Panama Canal is the bottleneck of the journey. The canal is over a hundred years old and was designed for the largest ships at that time. Maximum width: 32.3 meters. For behemoths like The Trapper, that’s not enough. Canal authorities began construction on newer, larger lock systems in 2007. Since its opening in 2016, ships belonging to the so-called Neopanamax class can now transit the canal and that includes the Trapper. But even though the new lock chambers are fifty-five meters wide: For the Trapper this means not even ten meters clearance on either side - a special challenge for Captain She and his crew…

  • Gigantic Wind Park Relocation | Mega Transports | Free Documentary

    48:14

A wind park needs to get from Europe to Asia. Over two thousand tons of highly sensitive and valuable cargo. On one of the world’s largest heavy lift vessels.
The team has only 37 days for loading in two ports and travelling once around half of the globe. To be able to transport the entire cargo, the crew even has to build another level altogether – in the middle of the deck.

It’ll be an ongoing battle for five straight weeks. Against time. And against weather.

The load: Five gigantic nacelles, each as heavy as a Boeing 747 and nine 75-meter-long blades. All these wind park components have been specially designed to fit together – and can only be replaced with a huge effort. Any damage to the cladding or the electronics could delay construction of the whole wind park project by months.

The loading process is extremely complicate and has been developed especially for this transport! So no one has any experience with it. The crew has to trust the plans of the engineers. And they don’t have ANY margin of error. Just a couple centimeters too far to the left or right would mean: everything out again.
A project never before undertaken – anywhere in the world. And no one knows if the risky plan will prove successful in the end.
A mega transport in the superlative. Over two thousand two hundred tons of cargo on three levels. Below deck, on deck, and above deck.

  • Huge Drilling Rig Transport | Mega Transports | Free Documentary

    48:14

An drilling rig is towed around the world by a single tug.

A brand-new drilling rig, worth 500 million dollar, has to go from South Korea to Europe. The problem: It is too gigantic for a heavy transport vessel. The solution: it’s being towed. By one single tug. It’s a true Mega Transport, halfway around the globe – all that in just 90 days.

The Mega Transport starts in Ulsan, South Korea. West Bollsta was built here for 6 years – and is now ready to get to its operation site. But how should this beast be delivered? It’s 123 meters long and 76 meters wide. Its maximum drilling depth: incredible 12 kilometers! Way to bulky to be transported in a common way. Surprisingly, a rather small kind of boat is best for the job: the ALP Striker – one of the strongest ocean tugs in the world.

The ALP Striker will pull the drilling rig across the oceans on arm-thick steel cables. They are so heavy that only the ship's own crane can move them. Connecting tug and rig alone takes a whole day.
Once the drilling rig is towed to the tug, they’re embarking on a journey never before seen: around the cape of good hope. Navigation, pirates, wind and waves – there are many unpredictable challenges along the way. Once they have managed them all, the destination is in sight: the Canary islands.

Mega Manufacturing: Airbus A350 | 4K Engineering Documentary

Assembled in France using millions of components made throughout Europe: The A350 is the most modern commercial aircraft in the world.

The Airbus A 350: the most modern commercial aircraft in the world. It takes 1800 highly-skilled specialists in Toulouse, France, and 2.5 million individual parts, delivered from all over the world, to assemble this masterpiece of aeronautic engineering. The goal: An aircraft with minimal consumption and maximum range. 53 percent of the Aircraft consist of a modern ultra-light composite material. But the innovative material also requires entirely new manufacturing processes. A challenge for the aircraft manufacturers in Toulouse. And the final assembly is preceded by a logistical masterpiece: The individual parts of the aircraft travel from various Airbus plants in Europe to Toulouse: the front and centre sections from Saint-Nazaire in France, the tail section from Hamburg, the wings from Broughton in Wales and Bremen, and the tail fin from Getafe in Spain. The factory in Toulouse is supplied with these parts by a specially developed transport aircraft, the Beluga. Several times a day, five of these machines commute between the various plants and bring supplies for production seven days a week from early in the morning until midnight. And the journey of the components is not over in Toulouse. By the time the A350 is fully assembled it will have passed through seven hangars or stations. Given the extremely high number of components that have to be assembled and the large number of different suppliers, there are a lot of risk factors involved in the production of the A350. And the pressure is high: The modern aircraft is extremely popular with airlines, with 890 pending orders to date. Ten aircraft of the A350 have to leave the factory every month no matter what.

But this connection is only a part of an enormous plan to tap into Norway’s second largest gas deposit, capable of providing 20% of the UK’s gas needs for decades to come. Located 3 km below the ocean’s surface and 120 km offshore, the deposit is beyond the reach of humans and all of the construction has to be completed by robots working against strong underwater currents, sub-zero temperatures and extreme wind and wave conditions. When tapped, the gas will be transported to one of the largest automated gas processing plants to prepare it for shipment to U.K. Each phase will put ingenuity and engineering to the ultimate test.

  • Nuclear Reactor Cooling Towers | Building Demolition | BlowDown | S01 E01| Free Documentary

    50:03

    Nuclear Reactor Cooling Towers Demolition:
Blowdown is an explosive four part building demolition series profiling some of the most challenging projects of Controlled Demolition Inc of Phoenix, Maryland. Each of the structures, some notable, others notorious is unique and present the team with challenges ranging from the structural, to the
explosive and to the bureaucratic. In episode one, the team from CDI travels to Sellafield, England to take down four outdated cooling towers on the site of the world’s first commercial nuclear
reactor. Sellafield has a long history of nuclear incidents and mishaps dating back to the infamous Windscale Fire in 1957. Sellafield now stores and treats nuclear waste and is home to 90% of Britain’s industrial radioactivity. The tension is increased by the fact that explosives have never been used on an active nuclear site in the United Kingdom before and it has taken four years to overcome the bureaucratic hurdles. The subjects of the film are four nuclear cooling towers. Each one is 88 m high and has an estimated mass of 5,200 tons. Of particular concern is the fact that the towers are only 40 meters away from a nuclear fuel handling plant. There has been a steady deterioration of the towers and there is the concern of an inadvertent collapse. Explosive demolition has been determined to be the safest and most cost effective means of removing the towers.
Each of the towers will be loaded with three sets of explosives. The first set will be in the legs of the towers, encircling 60% of the circumference. The second set will be set in a predrilled band around the same 60% approximately 20 m up. Charges will also be loaded into 3 vertical slots about 10 meters high which should cause the concrete shells of the towers to deform, rotate and collapse within the drop zone.

With just 10 days to load all four towers, the team struggles safely load and rig more than 4,500 charges and time the explosions to minimize the risks to the surrounding site. The team must evaluate each risk, real or imagined and account for it in the plan. Major concerns are projectiles, ground vibration and air over pressure that could compromise operations at the nuclear facility.

To gain the other side, to cross the bay, a curiosity, then an obligation which pushed the Man, from the first times of its history, to develop techniques of construction to overcome these obstacles. From the first bridges in liana, through the Roman aqueducts to the viaduct of Millau which spans the valley of the Tarn to 270 m in height, the genius of the man was expressed in the civil engineering…These technical feats, traits of union between men, are, in the broad sense, true works of art. Thus man has developed, thanks to science and its applications, a way to get closer to other men and to become master of time, and space…

  • How Mega Millions And Powerball Jackpots Grew So Large

    14:19

While Mega Millions and Powerball jackpots have grown in recent years, America's lottery system goes back a long time. Lotteries in colonial times helped finance some of America's roads, bridges, and schools like Harvard and Yale. Today, state-sponsored lotteries contribute millions state budgets, but some critics question how effective they actually are.

In October, an anonymous woman in South Carolina won the $1.6 billion Mega Millions jackpot. Jackpots have been on the rise since the two major lottery organizations, Mega Millions and Powerball, struck a deal to cross-sell tickets in each others' member states in 2010.

Adventure Ocean Quest - Special Episode: Discovering Another World | Ocean Documentary

Watch 'Adventure Ocean Quest - Episode 1' here:

As much as 71% of Earth’s surface is covered by water, representing one of the last great frontiers on this planet. We literally have only scratched the surface of what lies beneath the waves. And even of the species we have found, we know relatively little.

Perhaps the greatest challenge we face in exploring the oceans is to get close enough to marine life to observe undisturbed natural behaviour. This could allow newinsights into life in the oceans, but it is a tall order given the noise disturbance and clouds of bubbles emitted by most diving equipment.

So some scientists have now turned to freediver Frederic Buyle: they want to exploit his noiseless and calm method of diving to approach even shy animals and find explanations to some of the mysteries of marine life. His abilities are remarkable: he can descend to depths exceeding 50 metres and stay there for up to 4 minutes on a single breath.

Responding to calls for help from researchers, Frederic has teamed up with the renowned underwater cameraman Christian Petron. Christian’s vast experience includes working on Luc Besson’s cult-film “The Big Blue” and “Atlantis”, but Frederic’s attempts to freedive with predators like great white sharks test even Christian’s impressive skills.

In each episode, Frederic and Christian work closely with leading scientists trying to find answers to the mysteries of our oceans. To accomplish their task they also turn to locals who know the waters and their wildlife like the back of their hand. Local knowledge can prove invaluable in this game, perhaps even save his life.

Adventure Ocean Quest combines science, nature and adventure in a way that is enthralling and captivating, yet informative. Frederic’s extraordinary abilities and experiences wow the viewer, while his close teamwork with renowned scientists gives unprecedented insights into the secrets of life in the oceans. This series allows the audience a window into the very real challenges of accessing and studying underwater life. It is a stunning aquatic spectacle and a rollercoaster ride of discovery and personal experiences that keeps viewers glued to their seats.

  • Secrets of the Stone Age | DW Documentary

    42:31

How were our Stone Age ancestors capable of building gigantic structures like burial mounds and stone rings? An insight into the history of humankind. Watch Part 1 here:

Around 12,000 years ago, humans underwent a transition from the mobile lifestyle of hunter-gatherers to the settled life of farmers. That epoch, the Stone Age, produced monumental building works. How did our ancestors live and build back then? Part 2 of this two-part documentary takes us to unique archaeological sites in Scotland, Brittany, Austria, Malta, Turkey and Jordan. The gigantic stone circles, temples and tombs from the Stone Age beg the question not only as to why this effort was made, but also of how, given the technical possibilities of the time, our ancestors were capable of building structures like the Barnenez burial mound or the stone ring of Orkney. How many people did they need to transport a 20-ton stone? A team led by experimental archaeologist Wolfgang Lobisser carries out a test with a wooden sledge and a two-ton stone block. The Neolithic seems to have been a fairly peaceful era; at least, no artifacts indicating military conflicts have been found so far. Raids and attacks that wiped out entire villages have only been confirmed for the later Bronze Age. But the foundations of many disputes were laid back then. In addition to cult objects, the Neolithic also saw the development of the first trading systems. The people of the Neolithic were the first to become really dependent on material goods, says Marion Benz from the University of Freiburg, pointing to wafer-thin sandstone rings that researchers have found in large numbers in the Neolithic village of Ba'ja in Jordan. We need to know about prehistory in order to understand the present. Population explosion, consumerism and megacities are ultimately the heritage of the Neolithic period, when sedentary societies first appeared.

    48:14

Mega Manufacturing: Pierce - Fire Truck Manufacturer | 4K Engineering Documentary

What is created here is intended to save lives for once: Pierce Manufacturing: the world's largest manufacturer of fire trucks.

It is the largest manufacturer of fire trucks in the world: Pierce Manufacturing in Wisconsin, USA. 1400 trucks are being built here every year – and each truck is one of a kind. Customers determine every detail from the first sketch on the 3D model to the finished truck. More than 13,000 individual components - most of them laboriously crafted by hand - are turned into an absolutely individual fire-fighting vehicle. Even the lettering and coats of arms so popular in North America are the result of Pierce's manual work with brushes and genuine gold leaf. All this is only possible with a lot of experience. The three thousand employees have on average twelve years of professional experience. After all, not just any product is manufactured here, but in case of emergencies their quality is a matter of life and death. The demands placed on a fire -fighting truck are correspondingly high: heavy as a truck, it must nevertheless be extremely manoeuvrable and fast.

Take a mega-frame, a cab equipped with lots of high-tech, a high-performance water pump and a gigantic ladder: We accompany the production of a popular Enforcer fire truck from the very first step - the construction of the chassis - to the final acceptance by the customer. One of the highlights is the assembly of the TAK4 wheel axle. Developed in the military sector, it enables cornering at top speed without tipping over.

After approximately three months of production, the grand finale is the installation of a gigantic 33-meter turntable ladder on the roof of the Enforcer. A nerve-wracking task for the workers. Using two crane winches, they have to install the component, which weighs tons, with millimetre precision. No cable must be damaged. The final inspection shows whether the installation was successful. Then the customer receives his very own personal emergency vehicle.

Most Dangerous Ways To School - Colombia
In northern Colombia, in the region Bajo Cauca, more than 180 miles north of Medellín, the landscape is marked by water and seemingly endless expanses. Every day, the children who live there face this rough, unpredictable wilderness – with just one goal in mind: making it to school. Because this is their chance to break out of poverty and create a better life. Like the ten year old Kendys and the other schoolchildren.

For this, they subject themselves to a daily dose of danger. Some of them must cross a ramshackle bridge that could collapse at any moment. Like the ten year old Kendys and some other schoolchildren. One false step and they could drown or break their legs.

Ten-year-old Juan does not have to cross the bridge, but first he has to cross a river in an extremely wobbly canoe, and then walk through deep mud full of stingrays. Although his way is dangerous, he’s glad that he can go to school at all. It brings him a little closer to his dream of moving to a big city.

The children face all this under tough conditions. The temperature is already 34 degrees Celsius in the morning, with humidity at 97 percent. In order to get closer to their wishes and dreams, each day these children carry not only a backpack, but also the fear – on one of the world’s most dangerous ways to school.
