  • Replay - New Shepard Mission NS-15 Webcast

    2:14:19

Blue Origin successfully completed its 15th consecutive mission to space and back today and conducted a series of simulations to rehearse astronaut movements and operations for future flights with customers on board. This mission marked a verification step prior to flying astronauts.

For the first time, Blue Origin personnel standing in as astronauts entered the capsule prior to launch. These astronauts conducted a series of tests from within the capsule including a comms check with the Capsule Communicator (CAPCOM), procedures for entering and exiting the capsule, and pre-launch preparations within the capsule. Following the crew capsule landing, the astronauts rehearsed post-flight procedures, hatch opening, and exiting the capsule.

  • Replay of Mission 9 Webcast

    50:42

New Shepard flew for the ninth time on July 18, 2018. During this mission, known as Mission 9 (M9), the escape motor was fired shortly after booster separation. The Crew Capsule was pushed hard by the escape test and we stressed the rocket to test that astronauts can get away from an anomaly at any time during flight. The mission was a success for both the booster and capsule. Most importantly, astronauts would have had an exhilarating ride and safe landing.

This isn’t the first time we’ve done this type of extreme testing on New Shepard. In October of 2012, we simulated a booster failure on the launch pad and had a successful escape. Then in October of 2016, we simulated a booster failure in-flight at Max Q, which is the most physically strenuous point in the flight for the rocket, and had a completely successful escape of the capsule.

This test on M9 allowed us to finally characterize escape motor performance in the near-vacuum of space and guarantee that we can safely return our astronauts in any phase of flight.

Also on M9, New Shepard carried science and research payloads from commercial companies, universities and space agencies. Learn more about the payloads on board here:

  • Going to Space to Benefit Earth

    51:28

On May 9, 2019, our founder discussed his vision to go to space to benefit Earth.

In addition, he also announced the Blue Moon lunar lander, which is capable of taking people and payloads to the lunar surface. Below you’ll find more information about these announcements.

Blue Moon lunar lander: Blue Origin announced Blue Moon, its large lunar lander capable of delivering multiple metric tons of payload to the lunar surface based on configuration and mission. The cargo variant revealed today can carry 3.6 metric tons to the surface. We have also designed a variant of the lander that can stretch to be capable of carrying a 6.5-metric-ton, human-rated ascent stage. Blue also announced it can meet the current Administration's goal of putting Americans on the Moon by 2024 with the Blue Moon lunar lander.

BE-7 engine: The Blue Moon lunar lander will be powered by the BE-7 engine, a new addition to Blue Origin’s family of engines. The BE-7’s 40 kN (10,000 lbf) thrust is designed for large lunar payload transport. The engine’s propellants are a highly-efficient combination of liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen. The BE-7 will have its first hotfire this summer. The engine will be available for sale to other companies for use in in-space and lander applications.

Club For the Future: A non-profit founded by Blue Origin dedicated to inspiring and engaging the next generation of dreamers and space entrepreneurs as we journey to preserve Earth and unlock the potential of living and working in space. The Club will bring together K-12 students, educators and leaders for campaigns and initiatives utilizing Blue Origin’s unique access to space. The Club’s first activity will be to send a postcard to space and back on a future New Shepard mission—the first ever space mail. 56:51

Launch time: 9:35 am EDT (13:35 GMT)
Launch site: Blue Origin West Texas Suborbital Launch Facility
    Destination: 104 km straight up
Blue Origin launched their reusable, self-landing New Shepard suborbital booster straight up to an altitude of approximately 104 km. The detachable capsule will contain 12 customer payloads, including the first for NASA's Tipping Point Program for testing lunar landing technology. The scientific experiments will experience a few minutes of weightlessness. No humans this time. The booster propulsively landed itself on a pad 2 miles from the launch site. The capsule descended on parachutes and landed nearby with a momentary propulsive burst to cushion the landing. This will be the 7th consecutive launch of the same vehicle. Scrubbed on 25 Sep due to an issue with the electrical supply to the payloads.

  • End State: rethinking society in the digital age | RSA Replay

    49:42

Now is the time to rethink our future and how we get there.

Can we harness digital technology to tackle poverty and increase social mobility? Could reforming work help reverse the mental health crisis? And what could happen if we empower communities to imagine and shape their futures?

We are facing big questions about the kind of society and economy we need and want. Technological and demographic change, economic and climate crisis are intensifying insecurity and inequality. The need to seed cohesion, change and regeneration has never been more urgent. So how do we move forward?

By taking a frank and honest look at the nature and scale of the problems we’re currently facing, we can begin to explore the scope of the change needed, and imagine how we might reform state and society to create a fairer, more sustainable future.

There are huge challenges ahead, but if we respond with radical thinking, concerted action and serious ambition, we can create a future that is better than the present. Policy thinker James Plunkett and social innovator Sophia Parker share their ideas for how to get started.

Look out for more events on this theme coming up in our Regenerative Futures programme this autumn.

  • Replay - New Shepard Mission NS-13 Webcast

    52:00

Blue Origin successfully completed the 13th New Shepard mission on October 13, 2020. New Shepard flew 12 commercial payloads to space on this mission, including the Deorbit, Descent, and Landing Sensor Demonstration with NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate under a Tipping Point partnership. This was the first payload to fly mounted on the exterior of a New Shepard booster rather than inside the capsule, opening the door to a wide range of future high-altitude sensing, sampling, and exposure payloads.

Also on board were tens of thousands of postcards from students around the world from Blue Origin’s nonprofit, Club for the Future, some of which will include a special NASA Artemis stamp.

With this successful mission, New Shepard has flown more than 100 payloads to space across 10 sequential flights. All mission crew supporting this launch exercised strict social distancing and safety measures to mitigate COVID-19 risks to personnel, customers, and surrounding communities. Learn more about this mission and the payloads flown on New Shepard on BlueOrigin.com:

    1:25:39

As the UK government makes preparations to leave the European Union, this independent Commission, funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, is a unique and important opportunity to involve citizens, communities, businesses, academics and advocates in helping to shape the direction of food, farming and countryside futures.

Since the Commission launched last autumn, we’ve reviewed 1000 policy proposals, and hosted roundtables and discussions to explore the current policy domain. We’ve cycled right round the UK to meet people in their communities and workplaces, and set up separate long-term inquiries in the devolved nations and in three English counties to help us test ideas and understand more about what will work in practice. At this interim stage of our inquiry, we will be outlining some draft proposals which we believe provide radical and practical ways to address the challenges we’ve heard across the country.

    Speakers:
Sir Ian Cheshire, Chair of Barclays UK
Helen Browning, Chief Executive of the Soil Association
Dr David Pencheon, Honorary Professor, University of Exeter
Judith Batchelar OBE, Co-Chair, AgriFoodTech Council

New Shepard had a wholly successful mission on December 11, 2019.

This mission was another step towards verifying New Shepard for human spaceflight as we continue to mature the safety and reliability of the vehicle.

This was the 6th flight for this particular New Shepard vehicle. Blue Origin has so far reused two boosters five times each consecutively, so today marks a record with this booster completing its 6th flight to space and back.

This particular rocket has been an operational payload vehicle for several flights, meaning there are no more updates to the system.

This was also the 9th commercial payload mission for New Shepard, and we are proud to be have flown our 100th customer on board.

Also on the vehicle were thousands of postcards from students around the world for our nonprofit Club for the Future. The Club's mission is to inspire future generations to pursue careers in STEM and help visualize the future of life in space.

  • Big Tech and the Future of Democracy | Roger McNamee | RSA Replay

    1:10:28

Can we restore trust and confidence in the platforms that wield such power and influence in our personal lives and politics?

Roger McNamee was the ultimate Silicon Valley insider. A long-time tech evangelist and legendary investor, he had been an early Facebook shareholder and advisor to its founder, Mark Zuckerberg.

But from early 2016, his concerns about the company’s business model, culture and priorities became ever graver, leading to a crusading new role that turned him from fervent champion to fierce critic. In the years since, as tech-driven scandal and crisis has hit countries from the US to the UK, from Sri Lanka to Brazil, McNamee has become a leading light in the fight against the existential threats posed by Facebook and the big tech giants to our privacy, democracy and public health.

At the RSA, Roger McNamee tells the inside story of that fight, and sets out the actions we need to take now - as citizens, consumers, policymakers, employees and business leaders – to avert further political and cultural catastrophe, and build a better future for technology, society and ourselves.

  • Redefining Economic Value | Mariana Mazzucato | RSA Replay

    1:10:23

Economics is built on the concept of ‘value’, but what if we have lost sight of what this really means? In this RSA talk, renowned economist Mariana Mazzucato urges us to reconsider where wealth really comes from, and how we determine value in our economy. At the heart of the crisis in modern capitalism, she says, lies the blurred line between ‘taking’ and ‘making’; those who merely extract value are rewarded more highly than those who create it, generating perverse incentives and stifling a productive, healthy economy and society. In order to replace this broken system with a more sustainable, symbiotic capitalism, we must reconsider fundamental assumptions about what we value.
