  • Horse Training: The FIRST 3 things EVERY horse needs to learn.

It can be frustrating when you don’t know where to start and you and your animal are not on the same page. Whether you have a horse, pony, mule or donkey they all need to know these three things. Some are taught these when they are babies. Others are bred and sold not knowing much at all and sadly many, many animals live for decades never being taught even the most basic manners.

Here I show you how to teach the three most basic things your horse, pony, mule or donkey needs to know so you can develop a good partnership. It's so satisfying when you get that bond.

I really want to help you by giving you a simple plan that you can look forward to doing with your fur baby.

  • How to Ride a Horse

    Full Playlist:
Watch more Horses & Horseback Riding videos:

Whether you're interested in Western- or English-style horseback riding, some simple information can help you learn to ride a horse fast.

    Step 1: Outfit yourself
Dress appropriately in well-fitting, sturdy shoes with a minimal heel, long pants that are comfortable but not too loose, and a riding helmet that fits your head.

    Step 2: Gear up
Outfit your horse with the right gear, or tack, including a bit, a bridle, a halter, reins, and a saddle. Use the appropriate saddle for your riding style: English riding requires a lightweight saddle with a shallow seat and no horn, while Western riding uses a heavy saddle with a deep seat and a horn.

It's best to approach a horse at its shoulder -- never approach from behind.

    Step 3: Mount your horse
Holding the end of the reins in your left hand, place your left foot in the left stirrup, grab the saddle's pommel or horn with your right hand, and spring upward. Swing your right leg up and over the back of the horse and land in the saddle as gently as possible.

Use a mounting block or a friend to help you mount your horse as you're learning.

    Step 4: Prepare to ride
Sit upright in the saddle with your legs flat against the horse. Keep a straight line extending from your ear to your heel, gripping the reins only as firmly as you need to.

    Step 5: Start riding
Squeeze the horse with both heels, and say, Walk, to start going. Keep your chin up and look forward. Move up and down in the saddle gently, staying in sync with the horse's rhythm. Once the horse is moving, relax the pressure on the reins and in your calves. Repeat to move faster.

Step 6: Move with the horse
Press your left calf into the horse to turn right and your right calf to turn left. Slow down by briefly squeezing your thighs against the horse and saying, Whoa. Stop the horse by pulling back on the reins.

Don't yell instructions or pull strongly on the reins, as this may cause your horse to rear back.

    Step 7: Dismount
Hold the reins in your left hand, lean forward, grab the saddle's pommel or horn with your right, and take your feet out of the stirrups. Swing your right leg over the horse and bend your knees as you land to soften your impact and help keep your legs fresh for your next ride.

    Did You Know?
The horse that played Mr. Ed on the 1960s TV sitcom retired to a ranch in Burbank, California after the show's run ended, where his costar, Alan Young, rode him every morning.

Do you have a lazy horse? Do you fell like you are kicking constantly and the horse still is barley moving forward? Here are some tips to help you get your horse more forward and in front of the leg.

First of all it is important to consider that horses are not naturally lazy. We make them lazy! Horses are prey animals, so instinctually they are wired to be prepared to run and get away from the predators!

We make them lazy because we are afraid and don’t want to get hurt. When we get a new horse or start a young horse none of us want to come off or have a bad experience so we desensitize the horse and in a sense make them lazy and un-reactive so that we can stay safe.

Here are a few tips for how to get your horse more reactive and moving forward:
Make sure you are brave and willing to really ride forward - like gallop. Mentally you have to psych yourself up and get ready to really want to go!!!
Be consistent with your aids and corrections -every time that you ask the horse to go, you MUST get a reaction from the horse before you release the pressure. Being inconsistent and giving up will only make the horse even more un-reactive and lazy!
Ironically, on a lazy horse, you must take the legs off! The more that you take your leg off, the better chance you have to make a difference when you put your leg back on the horse.
The kick is from the waist down - it is very important that when you kick the horse to go more forward, the aid comes from the waist down. Your hands must remain passive and quiet at the moment when you kick!
The horse should feel like you have cruise control set in your car- the horse should stay going the same speed until you hit the brakes and tell them to slow them down. You should not have to constantly tell the horse to keep going.
Transitions and short intense intervals in your training sessions are a must for a lazy horse
Pay attention to the downward transitions and make sure that the horse does not stop or loose energy in the downward transition.

I hope these tips are helpful! Be prepared that when you start to wake up your horse, things are going to get exciting! As you change your standards and ask for more energy, horses often jump around, get a little spooky, and may run off. If you really want the horse to get more sensitive, you must be prepared to ride through this!!

  • Riding a Nervous Horse

This week's blog topic is about riding a nervous horse and stopping a horse who doesn't want to stop. I say this in the video, but I will say it here as well - I typically don't continue riding a horse that is continually nervous and not stopping when I ask. Personally, I find it much easier to work through these types of problems from the ground and then get back in the saddle. A nervous, jittery horse is not in a good state of mind for learning, so your time spent training when they are in this state can be a waste.

However, I have gotten a few questions on this topic, so I wanted to give you some tips on what I do when I feel a horse tensing up under me or when they won't stop when I ask with my seat.

It is easy to get tense and nervous when your horses is feeling anxious, visit: for more on how to handle anxiety.
