  • Self-Massage for Carpal Tunnel Pain

    2:28

Carpal tunnel massage can help break down scar tissue in the carpal tunnel ligament in the hands and wrist. This can help relieve painful symptoms like numbness, tingling & limited grip strength.

Karen Miller, PTA, shares different self-massage techniques to alleviate pressure on the wrist tendons and median nerve. Follow these techniques to treat and prevent your pain:

    Effleurage Hand Massage Technique (Warm-Up)

1.) Start by massaging the palm of your hand. Use light, circular motions in between the bones and soft tissue.

2.) Flip your hand over and perform the same massage, using either moderate or firm pressure to ease the pain.

3.) Use circular motions to work your way up the forearm, making sure to massage in between the two bones of the forearm until you reach your elbow.

4.) Work your way back down to the wrist and pull the wrist away for an added stretch.

    Milking Technique:

1.) Take your fingers and pull them away from your hand at the joint. Except for the thumb, pull each finger three times and apply firm pressure at the joint as tolerated.

**Remember, massage is a long-term solution and is much more effective over time.**

  • Massage Tutorial: Carpal tunnel syndrome

    13:12

Got clients with tingling/numbness in the first few digits? We're probably dealing with compression of the median nerve. Even if they've had a formal diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome, this broad myofascial work should be gentle enough to apply to most clients.

My main piece of advice is to avoid focusing too much on the wrist. If there is nerve impingement and inflammation there, it's not going to be too happy about deep friction. Instead, see about calming down the wrist and finger flexors. If you can defuse that bomb, sometimes the wrist will follow.

While you're at it, work with the neck, shoulder, and hand. Follow the median nerve all the way up and down, warming and soothing the tissue.

As with all neurological problems, keep track of your client's symptoms, and back off if any particular strategies seem to be aggravating the tingling/numbness. Remember that it took your client many years to get into this situation, so it may take a number of sessions!

  • 5 Exercises to PREVENT and ALLEVIATE Carpal Tunnel

    8:21

Rehab and Revive Physical Therapist explains carpal tunnel syndrome and pain. Though the feeling of carpal tunnel may reside in the hand or wrist, the root cause may be coming from elsewhere. By doing these exercises, you can determine where your carpal tunnel is really originating from. Whichever exercise improves your carpal tunnel most will show you the joint that is weak. Always remember to consult a medical professional before attempting any self-treatment or exercise.

  • 5 Best Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Stretches & Exercises - Ask Doctor Jo

    7:32

These carpal tunnel syndrome stretches & exercises are great for carpal tunnel pain. They are easy to do just about anywhere and should help provide pain relief from carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms. More on carpal tunnel syndrome:

Sometimes pain that presents as carpal tunnel syndrome can be coming from your elbow, shoulder, or your neck, so check with your doctor or physical therapist before assuming you have carpal tunnel syndrome and starting these exercises.

The first two stretches for carpal tunnel syndrome are more of a warm up. You will make a fist, and do wrist flexion and extension. Then you will turn your fist up with the thumb on top for radial and unlar deviation. These will start loosening up the muscles in and around the wrist.

Then you will go into full stretches for your wrist flexors and extensors. You can do them modified or the full stretch.

The next carpal tunnel stretch is a prayer stretch. This really stretches the carpal tunnel area, and you might get some numbness and tingling with it. As long as it goes away when you stop, it should be okay to do.

The last two stretches are for your pec or chest muscles and your anterior scalenes. Sometimes the pain comes from tightness in these areas at the chest and neck. So it’s important to stretch this area as well.

  • 7 Easy Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Treatments - Ask Doctor Jo

    8:13

These Carpal Tunnel Syndrome treatments are great for helping to relieve carpal tunnel syndrome pain, and they are easy to do just about anywhere. Buy the Workvie Lidocaine Roll On like I used in the video here: (affiliate link)

Make sure you are properly diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome by your doctor or physical therapist first because nerve pain in your hand (that mimics the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome) can be coming from your wrist, elbow, shoulder, or even your neck.

The first treatment is to do scar tissue mobilizations (STM) to the carpal tunnel area. Often scar tissue or adhesions form in that area causing pressure on the median nerve.

Next are wrist flexor and extensor stretches. The tendons go through the carpal tunnel area, so it’s important to keep them flexible.

Another great treatment is using a topical roll on like Workvie’s Vegan Lidocaine Roll On. It’s a great way to help calm down the pain through out the day, and while you are doing your stretches and exercises.

Then there is the prayer stretch and ulnar deviation stretch. These are other great ways to stretch the carpal tunnel area.

Finally is a modified median nerve glide. If there is scarring or adhesions around the nerve, this will help get it moving freely again.

    58

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition that creates numbness and tingling in your palm from the thumb to ring fingers. It occurs when a nerve on the palm side of the hand is compressed or irritated in some way. Often, a combination of risk factors contributes to the development of the condition, which tends to create initial symptoms at night.

Several treatment options are available to relieve tingling and numbness, and restore wrist and hand function.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by a pinched nerve, called the median nerve. In true carpal tunnel syndrome, this nerve is being compressed from a ligament that runs across the wrist and over the nerve.
However, this nerve can get pinched in the arm, shoulder or neck. If just the wrist and hand are addressed, a big piece might be missing! This video shows you have to work on all the areas that could be causing the compression.

    15:53

Carpal tunnel syndrome is more prevalent among assembly line workers than people who do data entry or work at a computer. It also affects gamers, musicians, golfers, tennis players, waiters, and massage therapists. There are 9 tendons that go through the carpal tunnel: the flexor pollicis longus, 4 flexor digitorum profundus, and 4 flexor digitorum superficialis. I did not have all the muscles drawn since I just wanted to highlight some of the main ones and give you an idea how intricate the forearms are, I hope you will start using some of the techniques and that they help you in your massage therapy practice.

    What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can be described as discomfort in one’s wrist, showing signs of:

    Numbness and tingling
    Ache
    Pain
    Fatigue

It is a result of a compression of the median nerve in your wrist. This nerve, alongside some other tendons run from your forearm to your hand in a narrow passageway in your wrist known as the carpal tunnel.

The median nerve’s job is to control movement and the feeling in your thumb and first three fingers (but not your last one.)

Well, even if you don’t have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome… It doesn’t change the fact you have a strained wrist. To better manage the ache in your wrists, here are 5 acupressure points that physiotherapists recommend.

    Point #1 (WRIST TENDONS):
    - Make a fist and squeeze as tight as you can.
    - You should see a space form between the tendons (at your wrist.)
    - Place your thumb at the space.
    - Relax your hand completely
    - Use your other fingers to hold the back of your hand gently.
    - Press your thumb in until your fingers grip automatically.
    - Hold for 30 seconds. Then slowly release.

Point #2 (1 INDEX FINGER ABOVE WRIST):
    - Place one hand on top of the other, both palms facing down, fingertips pointing away in opposite directions
    - Use your upper hand to grip the wrist of the lower hand
    - Place the index fingertip of your top hand on the forearm below
    - The point is where the tip of your index finger touches.
    - Feel the point between the 2 forearm bones. That’s the point we want to press.
    - Locate the point and switch it to your thumb.
    - Push down on the point as you lift your arm up.
    - Do that for 30 seconds.

Point #3 (3 FINGERS' WIDTH ABOVE WRIST):
    - Put 3 fingers on the back of your wrist. The point is located right underneath your 3 fingers.
    - Put 3 fingers on your wrist. The point is located right underneath your 3 fingers.
    - Hold these 2 points together for up to 2 minutes. Breathe while holding the 2 points.

Point #4 (2 FINGERS WIDTH ABOVE ELBOW BONE):
    - Raise arm up about 90 degrees
    - Place free hand 2 inches up from inner elbow bone
    - Turn palm away from you, wrist chasing last finger as far as possible
    - Feel for tensed bundle of muscles (near elbow crease)
    - Press the tensed muscle

Point #5 (1 PALM'S WIDTH BELOW FOREARM UNDERSIDE):
    - Raise arm up about 90 degrees
    - Wrist and palm down, fingertips toward your face
    - Free hand to place fingers on fleshy part of under-forearm
    - Wrist turns outward (chasing the thumb)
    - Feel for the tensed muscle on forearm
    - Press the tensed muscle
    - Fingertips of massaged arm should feel a gentle tingle and a connected, sweet ache

    +++++

NOTE ON ACUPRESSURE TECHNIQUE + DURATION:

Just remember that the acupoints are easy to find if you know the methods. As for pressing your acupressure points, simply apply pressure with the end of your thumb (NOT YOUR FINGERNAIL).

If you wish, you may move your thumb in circles around the point. And always err on the side of being too gentle with yourself - we don’t want to cause further injury to our own bodies.

For all the massage points, it is highly recommended that you apply pressure for a MINIMUM of 30 seconds, but it is ideal to press them for 1 to 2 minutes.

I have seen carpal tunnel self-massage videos that involve putting a lot of pressure on the wrist, and therefore the median nerve. Since carpal tunnel syndrome is synonymous with median nerve compression, this seems counterproductive.

In this video, we take a gentler, and more practical approach to treatment. Follow along as I teach you self-massage techniques, as well as nerve flossing, to help alleviate carpal tunnel symptoms.

    In this video:
    1) Internal and external rotation of the wrist.
    2) Plantar flextion and dorsi flextion of wrist.
    3) Home stretching examples

The idea is to bring relief to the tendon sheath under the flexor retinaculum. This will allow space for the carpal tendons to move and reduce inflammation.

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome & the Median Nerve

    3:38

John Gibbons is a registered Osteopath, Lecturer and Multi-published Author and is demonstrating how to test the Median Nerve and this nerve originates from C5 to T1 from the Brachial plexus and supplies some of the flexors of the forearm and the LOAF muscles in the hand – lumbricles, opponens pollicis, abductor and flexor pollicis brevis. This nerve can get damaged within the carpal tunnel and altered sensation to the thumb, index, middle and half the ring finger and weakness of the pinch grip and thenar eminence and phalens and tinel tests are good to detect pathology.

John shows you in his other neurological videos to assess the nerve root level of the adductors (obturator nerve through L3 reflex), patella tendon (femoral nerve through L4 reflex), semitendinosus (tibial / sciatic nerve of L5 reflex) and Achilles / plantar (tibial nerve of sciatic through S1 reflex) and a normal response is classified as 2++. Any reduced hypo-reflex (1+) or increased hyper-reflex (3+++) with Clonus and Babinski positive as might indicate some form of upper motor neurone lesion like Multiple sclerosis, stroke, spinal cord tumour or brain injury. Any altered reflex will need further investigation as a possibility of disc or neural pathology. These techniques and more is taught on the Neurological Master-Class at the University of Oxford.

In terms of his courses he offers, you can attend one at a time if you prefer or book all ten and receive a discount. Once you have completed all the courses you will be able to call yourself a Bodymaster Method ® Practitioner and be registered on his website with the letters 'BmP' after your name.

The Crushing Truth Behind Carpal Tunnel Syndrome!

Are you still having carpal tunnel pain? If you're trying to avoid surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome and have tried physical therapy without success. Maybe you are missing another site that the nerve is being crushed. The clinical name of this is double crush syndrome. This syndrome is described as a compression to a peripheral nerve at two or more locations. Often surgeons attribute failed nerve decompressions to this syndrome. When treating people for carpal tunnel syndrome we often do a postural and cervical evaluation in addition to a brief examination of the cervical spine to see if there's other sites besides the carpal tunnel that might be contributing to the symptoms.
