If intelligent life is out there...why haven't they found us yet? Or why haven't we found them yet? This is the crux of something known as the Fermi Paradox. A scientific and even philosophical question that dares to ask the question of WHY we haven't found alien civilizations in one form or another. Granted, humanity has happily showed what it COULD be like to meet them via television shows, movies, cartoons, comics and novels and more. But in term of definitive proof we don't have it...yet.
Over the course of human history there have been many sightings or proof that aliens might be out there. This is why Area 51 is such a pop culture item as well as a real-life one because we know the base is there, and yet we don't know what's inside it. Thus, it MUST be the place where aliens are being kept, or so some people believe.
The other thing to note here is that the sightings of aliens or alien craft is not new or even recent. If you look back at paintings going back centuries or ancient texts or drawings on caves you'll see references to beings and craft that clearly weren't from our world, yet someone had the image in the sights to draw about it or write it down.
But the irony, the true irony is that we may be closer to these alien civilizations than we previously believed, as they could be right here in the Milky Way Galaxy.
According to a new study, there could be more than 30 civilizations capable of long-distance communication here in the Milky Way. This work, led by researchers at the University of Nottingham, assumed that intelligent life not only exists off-Earth, but develops on other planets similarly to how it does on Earth.
There should be at least a few dozen active civilizations in our galaxy under the assumption that it takes 5 billion years for intelligent life to form on other planets, as it did on Earth, Christopher Conselice, an astrophysicist at the University of Nottingham who led this research, said in a statement. The idea is looking at evolution, but on a cosmic scale.
This is a very unique way of looking at things, and many would see this as an evolution of thought in regards to alien life. Various institutions, including NASA and other space agencies, have accepted that alien life COULD be out there, but obviously hadn't found proof of it yet. But what if they were just looking at it in the wrong way? Could this study be the proof we need that aliens do exist?
Well that's a tricky question, and it brings up the question of what this team at Nottingham did to try and figure out how many civilizations could be out there the Milky Way.
To estimate the number of intelligent civilizations in our galaxy, the team took into account two major Astrobiological Copernican limits, or conditions that such an intelligent civilization would depend on.

For one of these limiting factors, the researchers used Earth, where life began approximately 4.54 billion years ago, as an example. They assumed that intelligent life most likely forms in less than 5 billion years. Again, using Earth as a baseplate which is fair given the context of this study.
The other factor that they figured into their study was that of the stars around the planets life could be on. They estimated that a planet with intelligent life would orbit a star like our sun (again, Earth as the template). This sun-like star would have a metal content equal to that of the sun … (the sun is relatively speaking quite metal-rich), Tom Westby, an assistant professor at the University of Nottingham and first author on the paper said in the same statement.
In addition to these two Astrobiological Copernican limiting criteria, the scientists factored in technological capability. The researchers figured that the number of intelligent civilizations depends on technological prowess, specifically how long they have been sending out some sort of signal into space (anything from radio transmissions from orbiting satellites to television). So, using our civilization as an example for a potential extraterrestrial one, the researchers estimated that humans have been technologically advanced for about 100 years.
Which if you think about it is actually kind of fair. If you look at our world right now, we're reveling in technology, but go back to 1920?

  • There may be more than 36 intelligent alien civilizations in the Milky Way, scientists say!

    4:24

    Title:
There may be more than 36 intelligent alien civilizations in the Milky Way Galaxy, scientists say!
    Description:
It’s the oldest and the greatest cosmic question of all: is there anybody out there?
Forty years ago, NASA launched two Voyager spacecrafts into deep space. Onboard both were gold discs with music, greetings, and sounds from Earth — a message to aliens. Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan were creative directors of the project.
Since then there have been many remarkable attempts from mankind in order to send and receive messages to and from Outer Space in the search of Extra-Terrestrial life, if there is any.
The Milky Way, home to our Solar System, is estimated to have 100 billion to 400 billion stars.
Humans have long suspected that we are not alone in the universe, and now scientists have said there may be dozens of alien civilizations lurking not too far from Earth. Some of them may even be advanced enough to communicate with us.
According to a new study published on June 15, 2020, in The Astrophysical Journal, scientists at the University of Nottingham estimate that there is a minimum of 36 communicating intelligent alien civilizations in the Milky Way galaxy. Yes, you heard right “IN OUR OWN MILKY WAY GALAXY”!

They say the estimate is actually conservative — it's based on the assumption that intelligent life forms on other planets in a similar way to how it does on Earth, using what they call the Astrobiological Copernican Limit.
The researchers assume that Earth is not special — if an Earth-like planet forms in an Earth-like orbit around a Sun-like star, hosting a civilization that develops technologically in a similar way to humans, there would be approximately 36 Earth-like civilizations in our galaxy. In this case, other technological civilizations would be sending out signals, such as radio transmissions from satellites and televisions, on a similar timeline as humans, also attempting to find other lifeforms.
Previous calculations of alien life have been based on the Drake equation, which includes seven factors needed to find the number of intelligent civilizations, written by astronomer and astrophysicist Frank Drake in 1961. The estimates have been extremely broad, ranging from zero to a few billion civilizations.
The team of researchers in Nottingham refined the equation using new data and assumptions. They found that there are likely between four and 211 civilizations capable of communicating with others, with 36 the most likely number.
Finding these civilizations is another issue entirely — scientists said they would be thousands of light-years away. Our current technology makes it nearly impossible to detect or communicate with possible alien life.
Scientists said that searching for extraterrestrial intelligent life could give us insight into how long our own civilization can survive. The more civilizations we find close to home, the better the chances for humans' long-term survival.

  • Is Alien ‘Life’ Weirder Than We Imagine: Who Is Out There?

    59:56

If we want to discover alien life out there in the universe, we first need to figure out where to look—and what we're even looking for. Will it be biological like us? Could it be artificial, or take some other form we haven't yet considered? And how do we find something so fundamentally different from ourselves? In this program, scientists devise plans for searching for beings beyond Earth while they grapple with the very definition of life.

  • Intertemporal Communication

    28:50

There's a plausible chance that we may be alone in the galaxy right now. But the odds that the galaxy has never, and will never, host other civilizations is far less likely. Today we explore the possibility of communicating through time, and how such a feat might be accomplished.

    16:32

The Kardashev Scale has become a standardized way of classifying (hypothetical) advanced civilizations. The lowest rank, Type 1, is still way ahead of us - but by how much? When will we achieve Type 1 status and exactly how could we plausibly do so? In this video, we go through some estimates of when humanity might become Type 1, and in particular what kind of energy sources we could harness to achieve this feat.

  • Milky Way Galaxy Could Be Home to 36 Alien Civilizations | Wee Science

    2:29

The oldest and the greatest cosmic question of all Is there anybody out there? New research suggests that Milky Way Galaxy may be home to 36 active intelligent civilizations other than us but we are unable to communicate with them because. The average distance between this civilization would be 17,000 light-years So detection and communication is currently impossible

A key assumption is that it takes around five billion years for intelligent life to form on other planets, as it does on Earth Another is that a technological civilization will last at least 100 years as ours has The number of civilizations depends strongly on how long they are actively sending out signals of their existence into space Alternatively, if we find that there are no active civilizations in our Galaxy it is a bad sign for our own long-term existence

Searches for extraterrestrial intelligent civilizations not only reveals the existence of how life itself forms but also gives us clues about how long our own civilization will last

  • We Are Not Alone! There Are At Least 36 Intelligent Alien Civilizations In Our Galaxy

    5:24

It’s the oldest and the greatest cosmic question of all: is there anybody out there?

For years all we’ve had is the Drake Equation to help us understand the question, but no indication of an answer. Now a group of scientists at the University of Nottingham think they’ve come up with a new “cosmic evolution”-based calculation—or, rather, an estimation—that suggests that there are likely to be at least 36 ongoing intelligent civilizations in our Milky Way galaxy.

The Milky Way, home to our Solar System, is estimated to have 100 billion to 400 billion stars, and roughly one exoplanet per star in our galaxy. Read Full Story:

Is there intelligent life out there in the Milky Way beyond our own Solar System? If so, how many alien civilizations are there presently within our own galaxy, and how far away is the closest one? It's a question that's mystified humanity for as long as we've looked up at the stars and wondered about perhaps the greatest of all the existential questions we could possibly ask, are we alone?

  • 36 Alien Civilizations In The Milky Way?

    2:26

They may not be little green men. They may not arrive in a vast spaceship. But according to new mathematical calculations, there could be 36 intelligent civilisations in our galaxy capable of communicating. The Milky Way is estimated to have 100 billion to 400 billion stars and roughly one exoplanet per star in our galaxy.

Scientists have adopted a set of assumptions about life in the cosmos. One of the critical assumptions made in the study is that it takes approximately five billion years for intelligent life to form on planets. Another assumption is that a technological civilization will last at least 100 years. Number of civilizations depends on how long they are actively sending out signals , such as radio transmissions from satellites and TV

The scientist also used other variables such as, the average rate of star formation per year in the galaxy and the fraction of those stars with planets. The 36 alien races estimate is actually on the more conservative end of the scale. Scientists predicted that there could be anywhere between 4 and 211 civilisations in our backyard. The closest civilisation to Earth may be at a distance of 17,000 light-years. So detection and communication is currently impossible

1:49 Data from the Kepler mission and the Drake equation shows the existence of planets like Earth in the Milky Way, so Starship SpaceX launch will highly likely detect other life in the Milky Way.
5:16 SpaceX's Starship rocket can launch the Luvoir space telescope, the next-generation space telescope which is even bigger than the James Webb Space Telescope, to detect earth like exoplanets in the Milky Way and also other galaxies.
9:36 The moon version of SpaceX's Starship will allow us to build giant radio and optical telescopes on the far side of the moon, intercepting radio signals or transmissions from intelligent alien civilization.

  • Study says intelligent life could be in our galaxy

    2:13

    Transcript

Are we alone in the universe?

Researchers behind a new study do not think so.

The peer-reviewed Astrophysical Journal published a study from the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom Monday.

The scientists look at our own galaxy, the Milky Way.

They started with the assumption that intelligent life takes about five-billion years to form on other planets.

They say that's similar to how it is on earth.

With that assumption, the researchers calculated that there could be more than 30 active intelligent civilizations just in the Milky Way.

These civilizations are not just a simple space flight away.

Researchers think it would take some 17-thousand light years to get to them.

To put that into perspective, one light-year is six trillion miles.

We are not alone - with 36 intelligent alien races living in our galaxy, according to a new study.  British scientists have calculated that there could be dozens of other extra terrestrial lifeforms within the Milky Way.  But they said it is likely the average distance to such civilisations would be 17,000 light-years - making detection and communication very difficult with our present technology.  Their findings, published in The Astrophysical Journal, aim to shed fresh light on the age old question whether there are other life forms within our Universe.  The University of Nottingham team said that obtaining good estimates of the number of possible extraterrestrial civilisations has previously been very challenging.  They decided to take a new approach to the problem.  Using the assumption that intelligent life develops on other planets in a similar way as it does on Earth, the research team obtained an estimate for the number of intelligent communicating civilisations within our own galaxy, the Milky Way.  They calculated that there could be more than 30 active communicating intelligent civilisations in our home Galaxy.  Astrophysics Professor Christopher Conselice, who led the research, said: There should be at least a few dozen active civilisations in our Galaxy under the assumption that it takes five billion years for intelligent life to form on other planets, as on Earth.  The idea is looking at evolution, but on a cosmic scale. We call this calculation the Astrobiological Copernican Limit.  First author Dr Tom Westby explained: The classic method for estimating the number of intelligent civilisations relies on making guesses of values relating to life, whereby opinions about such matters vary quite substantially.  Our new study simplifies these assumptions using new data, giving us a solid estimate of the number of civilizations in our galaxy.  The two Astrobiological Copernican limits are that intelligent life forms in less than five billion years, or after about five billion years - similar to on Earth where a communicating civilisation formed after 4.5 billion years.  In the strong criteria, whereby a metal content equal to that of the Sun is needed - the Sun is relatively speaking quite metal rich - we calculate that there should be around 36 active civilisations in our Galaxy.  The research shows that the number of civilisations depends strongly on how long they are actively sending out signals of their existence into space, such as radio transmissions from satellites or television.  Prof Conselice said that if other technological civilisations last as long as ours, which is currently 100 years old, then there will be about 36 ongoing intelligent technical civilisations throughout our galaxy. Aliens  But he said the average distance to these civilisations would be 17,000 light-years away, making detection and communication very difficult with our present technology.  It is also possible that we are the only civili
