Hikers Saw That This Neglected Sheep Could Barely Stand, So A Shelter Begged For Experts To Save Him

Chris the sheep was found wandering the Australian countryside with a dangerously oversized fleece. The wool was so heavy, in fact, that he could barely walk – meaning he needed urgent attention. When an Australian hiker found Chris the sheep, they were horrified to see that he could barely stand. His wool had grown so…

  • A new fleece of life! Neglected sheep that dodged the shears for FIVE YEARS can see again

    5:56

When an Australian hiker found Chris the sheep, they were horrified to see that he could barely stand. His wool had grown so out of hand, in fact, that it was weighing him down. And the outsized fleece was such a problem for the animal that even after he was rescued, a shelter begged experts for help.

In 2015 a hiker was out walking on Mulligans Flat, a protected nature reserve on the edge of Canberra in Australia. This area is known in particular for its vast array of wildflowers, with approximately 150 species to be found there. On this day, however, something much more disconcerting had caught the walker’s eye.

And the object of the hiker’s attention was unusual to look at. Nearly the size of a small car, it appeared to resemble a fallen cloud or a heap of cotton balls. However, as the individual investigated the mass, they realized that it was grazing on the grass.

It was then that the walker realized they were looking at a sheep – albeit not like they’d ever seen before. The animal had seemingly been so neglected that its fleece had grown to epic proportions – meaning the sheep could barely walk under the weight.

  • Baarack the Sheep Loses 78-Pound Fleece

    4:30

An Australian animal shelter in early February sheared off a 78-pound (35.4 kg) fleece from a rescue sheep that had been roaming in the wild for several years, rescuers said.

The overburdened sheep, named Baarack, had been found “wandering in the rugged Victorian bushland” by a property maintenance man who took it to Edgar’s Mission in Lancefield, Victoria, in early February, the shelter said.

In the video filmed by staff at Edgar’s Mission on February 5, Baarack struggles to balance himself under the weight of his matted and dirty fleece.

“This is a good place to be, ole’ mate,” a man is heard telling the sheep.

Edgar’s Mission told Storyful that Baarack was “doing so well” and accustoming to life at the shelter.

“We truly believe that he understands what we have done for him has eased his life and turned it for the better,” they said. “For the time being he is setting in with equally lucky other rescued sheep.”

    This sheep’s transformation is un-baaa-lievable.

A dysfunctionally fluffy sheep in a forest outside Melbourne, Australia, was overcome by the shear amount of wool on his body. But the monstrous fur ball — nicknamed Baarack — was saved from his woolly situation when rescuers shaved off his heavy load, which weighed in at more than 77 pounds.

  • Baarack the sheep shorn of 35kg fleece after being found roaming in rural Australia

    1:13

A rogue sheep found wandering in rural Victoria has been shorn of his heavily overgrown 35kg fleece. Nicknamed Baarack by his rescuers, the merino ram was taken to Edgar's Mission farm sanctuary, where the fleece was removed to save his life. 'He was in a bit of a bad way,' Kyle Behrend of the sanctuary said. 'He was underweight and, due to all of the wool around his face, he could barely see'

  • Sheep Hadn’t Been Sheared In 5 Years Saved After 75-Pound Fleece Cut Off

    2:30

It was shear bliss for this sheep when his 75-pound matted coat was removed - allowing him to see clearly for the first time in years.

Baarack, as he has been nicknamed, had been left to run wild for years and grew a massive coat of wool before he was rescued by an animal sanctuary.

Volunteers at Edgar's Mission in Lancefield, Australia, predicted Baarack had at least five years' worth of wool growth.

As well as giving him an unusually bulbous appearance, the matted mass of wool was also weighing the sheep down and obscuring his vision.

It took volunteers an hour to remove Baarack's thick, tangled coat - a process which usually takes mere minutes.

The sheep is now recovering and adjusting to his new life at the sanctuary, where staff say he has been brought 'Baarack from the brink'.

'We couldn't believe there was actually a sheep alive under all that wool,' Edgar's Mission wrote in a Facebook post.

'It was a struggle to comprehend that beneath that convoluted moving mass of matted fleece, adorned with countless sticks, twigs and insects, which caused his saviours to look twice, was not Australia's answer to the yeti - but a sheep.'

Baarack was found earlier this month, wondering alone in bushland in Victoria, around 40 miles north of Melbourne, Australia.

Edgar's Mission wrote: 'Each day his wool grew longer and longer, and his plight more desperate, while his chances of survival grew thinner and thinner.

'Many people do not realise that wool can easily morph into a cumbersome fleece that continues to grow throughout the life of a sheep.

'The wild mouflon, from whom sheep are descended, had a naturally shedding, off-times multi-coloured (great for camouflage) fleece.

'This fleece grew and then shed according to the season - a great evolutionary adaption which served them well.

'Then came domestication, and through selective breeding by humans, there are now many breeds of sheep who require annual shearing to ensure a good standard of welfare for these animals.

'Failure to do so results in sheep living at a great disadvantage, with often life-threatening consequences.

'But Baarack knew none of this, for all he wanted to do was live. And, seizing each moment, he did.

'Having endured such a state whilst the earth completed her orbit of the sun several times, Baarack had somehow eked out an existence.

'He found nourishment in the tender shoots of grass that had determinedly made their way up through the forest floor, and seized opportunistic finds of water pooled in puddles to soothe his parched throat - such is the stoicism of sheep.

'Now relieved of that fleece and its 35.4 kilos of burden, Baarack is indeed lighter in more ways than one.

'No longer shall he struggle for food and shelter, no longer will he be at the mercy of predators or the elements, and no longer will he be forgotten.

'A few shearing nicks now mark his thin body, along with an ulcer, the legacy of his once wool-blind state.

'But of this will heal - and Baarack can now see the world more clearly.'

  • When Rescuers Found This Neglected Creature, Vet Had No Idea What It Was

    2:59

This poor animal had been mistreated and neglect so badly that rescuers couldn’t even tell what it was when they first saw it. The poor animal looked like a gnarled, nasty wig of dreadlocks with four legs and a tail.

The dreadlocks had formed on the legs and wrapped about the body. The thick coating of dirt didn’t help the poor animal either. Underneath that mess of fur that covered the shape of its face and body were sore skin.

Clearly, this used to be someone’s beloved pet before the owner stopped caring and left them to fend for themselves. Just by looking at this creature’s condition, most would argue it to be a lost cause. But, the groomers and a group of shelter employees wouldn’t give up.

To the team’s surprise, their latest rescue animal was a dog. Once they got the dog to the shelter and got a little bit closer to it, they discovered that it was male, but they did not know what the breed was.
