  • Do Babies Get Seasick? ⛵???? + BOSTON Through Our Eyes- Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 307

    27:05

In this episode we show you Boston through our eyes and we set sail for the Cape Cod Canal. Delos is rocked by a huge swell and Sierra gets her first real bout of seasickness :(

We walk the historic Freedom Trail of Boston and tour the Boston Naval Shipyard where we get to explore a WWII Destroyer and the historic USS Constitution, aka Old Iron Sides. It's incredible to view naval technology spanning two centuries, literally docked right next to each other! We then continue our trip south with eyes on the Cape Code Canal. The conditions are pretty rough and Delos is getting tossed around by a huge swell from the last blow. There's nothing worse than trying to take care of a seasick baby when you're seasick yourself.....

  • Wifi & 4G connection on your boat

    7:25

Okay so some of you go sailing to get away from the world, but for cruisers like us our boat is our home and it needs to be connected.
Close to lane you you may get data with your mobile phone or tablet but it can be pretty sketchy and down below, especially in a metal boat your unlikely to get signal.
This video looks at a system we thought was the best around after some research. It allows you to receive Wifi at a much greater distance than you could do without it and when there's no Wifi available or you're our of range, can be switched over to receive a 4G signal, they claim, at up to 20 miles from shore. We will be testing that!
In any case this equipment will provide connectivity at mush greater distances from habitation and thats not just about watching Netfix. It's being able to get weather reports, check google earth for terrain, get really useful information about ports of call and all the other things that make life easier and safer.

If you're interested in this sort of gear then talk to Ben at Pro Marine
He's very helpful especially if you want various things boxed up and sent somewhere.
We get most of our boats bits from him now.

  • Clean Bilge! - Episode 150 - Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat

    19:36

Building a boat can seem like an incredibly daunting task. One thing that has gotten us through these years is seeing it a lot of little things that need to be done and pieces that need to go together. This episode is very much dedicated to that ideology.
We make a couple more fin head bolts to lock in the grown knees we put in the boat recently. We finish and lock in the sill for the deck house and we clean up the bilge so that we can finish off one more piece of Arabella, her bronze floors!

Thank you all for watching and supporting the project in all the many ways that you do. This community has really grown to be something amazing and we really appreciate you all.

See you next week! And happy 150th video!!

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

  • We Bought Diesel Engines for the Catamaran - But Will We Use Them?

    15:29

Want to be the first to know all our boat building secrets? Become a Patron now!!

When we first bought the components for our build, we were sure we'd be using dual outboards for propulsion. But, now we've found ourselves with a set of diesel engines. The more we started researching, the less outboard engines sounded appealing to us ... and when a set came up for sale after being removed from a new catamaran, we jumped on the chance to buy them. They may not be what we end up with, but at least we have them now, and at a reasonable price (compared to buying new diesel engines).

Before heading out to Maine to pick them up though, we really get to work on the Viking, and Matt cuts out the core up in the v-berth. The rotting up there is incredibly bad, and it will need to sit with a dehumidifier for quite some time before we can go to work again patching it up.

    We hope you enjoy!

    Much love from Annapolis!

This week we tackle the pantry aboard our beautiful boat Penelope in the hopes of designing some new organizational systems. Obviously, we have a long way to go and the projects are far from done, but it's fun to see things come together week by week : ) One day we will be sailing across an ocean, happy we took the time to get everything sorted for our lifestyle needs. Given that we don't eat out at restaurants almost ever (even pre-covid), it's super important to us that we have space for dried goods and a kitchen system that will be easy to use.

    Cheers,
    Lou

Here's what we *think* we know about her past. Keep in mind we bought her at auction without ever meeting the owner! The owner was sailing along and ran aground - hard. Hard enough that the keel pivoted and pushed the aft end up into the hull. This force cracked the internal grid in several places and broke a portion of the grid free from hull. At some point an inspection was done, insurance was called and decisions were made. See for how we came to own her!

These last 2 weeks in Fuerteventura were full packed of adventure for us. We hired a car for a week to discover the island and fixed a couple of things around Celedon. The good ship Javelot gets a taste of the dirt, or in this case mud, as we sailed down the Coomera River and through to Morten Bay infamous areas where yachties keels form a connection with terra firma but in a good way.
And our dinghy anchor, that we thought was stolen, turns up stashed away in the engine room. Who would have put it there???

    WHO ARE WE?
In 1997, after missing out on his Olympic rowing medal dream, Rob decided to row a tiny seven-metre plywood boat, 2500 miles from Tenerife in the Canary Islands to Barbados in the Caribbean. It took 6 weeks and he and his rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, won the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. His first taste of a blue water ocean crossing.
Skip forward to 2014, and married with three children we invested in Javelot a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Robert's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, we set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know our boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn 18, Declan 15 and Ivan 13, in tow. Through trial and error, we have become confident wayfarers, kind of.

Our plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we will re trace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed.

  • Building a sailboat arch for solar panels, dinghy davits, fenders and workout - Sail Mermaid S1 E21

    20:56

Building a sailboat arch for solar panels, dinghy davits, fenders and workout

The best way to mount solar panels on a sailboat is to make a sailboat solar arch on the back. This arch also works as dinghy davits and is very practical. As many has pointed out in past videos the way I was tugging my dinghy was not optimal to say the least.
Hoisting it up on deck is a bitch everytime you sail and I also needed more room to put solar panels and toys like my electric scooters.

The building of an arch became more and more obvious, but it was very expensive. A simple arch to my boat was offered made for 3500 Euros, but then the constructor could not promise a given date for delivery.

I would not be able to make changes to the design either, so I decided to build it myself with the help of some friends. I really could not have done this project without them. I needed help with the welding, measuring and planing. To this date there is no drawings for this DIY solar arch. It was made as we progressed and built on site. For me welding a solar arch in stainless steel was a challenge, and a friend helped me weld it together.

The total cost of building sailboat davits and arch in stainless steel arch for this project was about 1000 Euros. I also bought equipment specially for this project at a cost og 600 Euros and another 600 Euros for a new drill and grinder that I would have bought anyways.

All in all the arch did not get expensive at all, but there is a lot of hours spent, and still to be spent!
Please note; this is not a DIY video intended for knowledge on building arch for sailboat.

Please do give the video a thumbs up if you like it, comments are always welcome and don't forget to subscribe if you are new to my channel.
