In Bonanza, Ben Cartwright is the patriarch of an all-male Nevada ranching family. Set during and after the Civil War, Bonanza is the story of life on the family's thousand-acre spread, known as the Ponderosa, near Virginia City. Ben has his three sons, each with a different (and deceased) mother. Serious eldest son Adam hopes to follow in his father's footsteps; middle son Hoss is a gentle giant -- physically strong, but sometimes naive; and youngest son Little Joe is the most impetuous and romantic of the offspring.

The title Bonanza is a term used by miners in regard to a large vein or deposit of silver ore, from Spanish bonanza (prosperity) and commonly refers to the 1859 revelation of the Comstock Lode of rich silver ore mines under the town of Virginia City, not far from the fictional Ponderosa Ranch that the Cartwright family operated. The show's theme song, also titled Bonanza, became a hit song. Only instrumental renditions, absent Ray Evans' lyrics, were used during the series's long run.

In 2002, Bonanza was ranked No. 43 on TV Guide's 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time, and in 2013 TV Guide included it in its list of The 60 Greatest Dramas of All Time. The time period for the television series is roughly between 1861 (Season 1) and 1867 (Season 13) during and shortly after the American Civil War.

During the summer of 1972, NBC aired reruns of episodes from the 1967–1970 period in prime time on Tuesday evening under the title Ponderosa.

Dan Blocker was a Texas native. They say that everything is bigger in Texas, and that idiom certainly applies to Blocker's larger-than-life personality. He was one of the most beloved members of the cast on Bonanza, where he played Hoss Cartwright, son of Ben Cartwright.

Blocker got his start on television in 1957, guest-starring in an episode of The Restless Gun. That small role got him the chance to audition in front of producer David Dortort. In 1958, he landed his first major recurring role in Cimarron City as the character Tiny Budinger.

It was in 1959, however, Dortort cast Dan as Hoss Cartwright in Bonanza - a role that would become his most defining work. Unfortunately, it was also his final role, because in 1972, after undergoing a relatively routine procedure removing his gall bladder, Dan developed a block clot in his lung and suddenly died.

His loss made waves across Hollywood, and it was clear that Bonanza would never be the same. For the first time in TV history, however, his death was addressed to the audience. So in many ways, he made history. Viewers got a chance to mourn his loss just as his family and friends did.

The final season of Bonanza was surreal. It was blatantly obvious that Blocker was absent. Without Hoss, it didn't even feel like the same show. That's also precisely while it's 14th season was also its final one.

Even today, that season is the least requested one for syndicated reruns. The first episode was highly viewed and historic in the way that it was the one that announced Hoss' death, but the remainder of the season almost felt compulsory. Bonanza, without Dan Blocker, wasn't really even Bonanza.

  • This Is Why the Bonanza Cast Didn’t Get Along

    8:32

Bonanza was one of the most influential western shows to ever air on television. It ran for an incredible 14 seasons between the years 1959 and 1973. And even though the western series was set between 1861 and 1867, the show often dealt with contemporary social issues which distinguished it from many of the other shows of its time – especially other westerns. It was both anachronistic and timely somehow at the very same time. What other show can you think of managed to pull that off?

Adam was one of the most loved characters on the show and Pernell Roberts became a household name because of the show. So why did he eventually leave the show so soon? Why didn’t we see Adam Cartwright throughout the entire series?

The sad reason why Pernell Roberts left Bonanza is because he didn’t like the character of Adam Cartwright. Pernell Roberts was a serious actor and felt that Bonanza – as a show – wasn’t a serious show. He also felt that Adam Cartwright wasn’t a serious character.

He thought it was ridiculous that the character still lived with his father and depended on his father’s approval to do anything. He also felt that the character wasn’t as forthright as he wished.

Even during his time on the show, he didn’t mind expressing his displeasure about his character and the show’s storyline. He wasn’t even afraid to tell his fans about how he wasn’t pleased with the show.

In fact, later on he felt that he didn’t enjoy working on the show at all and was happy to leave the show. To him, it didn’t matter that he was turning down a large paycheck – because he felt he was improving his emotional wellbeing.

Nevertheless, he managed to have a successful career after the show ended. But for many fans, we’ll always remember Pernell Roberts for his work on Bonanza. Even though he wasn’t pleased with the show, he gave a great performance as Adam Cartwright. It’ll go down as one of the great performances in American television history.

Main characters: Red Twilight and Mary

Bonanza character: All the Cartwright's are involved

In this episode, Hoss tries to be the nice guy that he is and stop a friend from getting into trouble outside the saloon. But a simple act of friendship turns deadly when the man falls, hits his head, and dies. The girlfriend blames Hoss and tells the brother, Red, when he rides into town that it's Hoss's fault.

This is a case of vengeance on Joe's part when Hoss is shot while out trying to come to terms with the shooting. Joe is mad and is determined to kill the man who shot Hoss.

The character actor who plays Red Twilight is Adam Williams. he almost always plays a bad guy.

Dead: 3 Written by mitchrmp on IMDb.com

This episode has Dan Blocker trying to disarm a drunken Keith Richards when he knocks Richards down and Richards hits his head and dies. Purely an accident, even Beverly Tyler, Richard's girlfriend agrees with that after a while.

But Adam Williams who is Richards's brother comes to town and he waits for a proper time and shoots him from a distance in the back. He uses a large caliber buffalo gun and only a big guy like Hoss Cartwright might have survived it. As it is it was touch and go.

The story switches to Little Joe at this point and fans of the series know in his younger days Michael Landon had one quick temper that didn't lessen all that much with maturity. The question is can the rest of the family keep him in line until the proof is there for an arrest and for justice to take its course.

The episode belongs to Michael Landon and to guest star Adam Williams who specialized in mean villains on the big screen and small. You wouldn't this man on your trail. Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com

  • The Truth About Andy Griffith’s Broken Marriages

    8:09

Andy Griffith is a legendary sitcom actor thanks to his roles in The Andy Griffith Show and Matlock. He portrayed himself as one of the friendliest men in Hollywood, and it earned him a legion of fans that still watch him today in syndicated reruns.

The “real” Andy was more abrasive than his onscreen persona. He was too private to reveal details about his personal life but managed to be both a shy recluse and a womanizer at the same time.

Andy was married 3 times before his death in 2012. Each broken marriage serves as an interesting anecdote in his life story and a signpost that led him towards true love.

Andy’s first wife was a musician he met in college. They formed a husband-and-wife duo that toured around his home state of North Carolina. It helped launch his career but not hers, and the resentment grew until it led to divorce after almost 30 years of marriage.

The woman he chose as his second wife stunned and surprised his family and friends. Marrying a beautiful Greek actress and “flower child” soon after his first marriage wasn’t a move they’d anticipated. Most of the details about their relationship have managed to stay a secret, but it’s clear they had internal struggles that caused them to divorce after 8 years.

It took 3 tries for Andy to find a wife that would stand by him no matter what and help him in his final years when his health began to fail. She was there when he was no longer able to walk and was the first to call 911 on the day he died.

    Genre: Western

    Storyline:
The Cartwrights rescue 11-year-old Gabrielle Wickham (Diane Mountford), a blind orphan girl whom they find wandering aimlessly in the snow. Gabrielle is hoping against hope to locate her grandfather, Zachariah Wickham (John Abbott). Alas, Zachariah turns out to be a contentious hermit who hates people in general and relatives in particular. Written on rottentomatoes.com

    Reviews:
This is one of the most moving and touching episodes of Bonanza. Of course, it was always a quality program and this production shows why it was so much more than just another Western.

Some may call it predictable, but it still tugs at the heartstrings and the ending is most satisfying.

Eleven year old Gabrielle is an orphan blind girl who has no family except for her embittered grandfather, living like a hermit in the mountains after spending time in prison for a crime he did not commit.

Atter initially rejecting her, his heart softens and he comes to the Ponderosa to claim his granddaughter and even spends time with the Cartwrights on Christmas Eve. Written by davilbr on IMDb.com

Airing on Christmas Eve of 1961 this film is a reworking of Heidi adapted to be a Christmas story for Bonanza. I believe it was subsequently broadcast in and around Christmas for the rest of the life of this series.

Dan Blocker and Michael Landon find little Diane Mountford alone on a trail after they found where the buckboard her parents were driving plunged down a mountain, killing them. She's blind and they were on their way to see her grandfather who lives like a hermit in the Sierra Nevadas. They bring her back to the Ponderosa.

When they reach her grandfather played by John Abbott he wants nothing to do with her. He's a bitter old man, sent to prison for a crime he didn't commit and has shunned society ever since.

But in the Shirley Temple tradition, young Ms. Mountford breaks the old man down. It all ends with Christmas at the Ponderosa.

This is a very touching episode and I'm glad some other viewers feel the same way I do. Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com

Filming Locations: Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA

    Storyline:
The Colonel is habitual liar Frank Medford, an old friend of Ben Cartwright. Now a poverty-stricken travelling salesman, Frank is determined to convince everyone that he is as successful as Ben. Thus, Frank tells one of his celebrated whoppers, claming to be a millionaire. It takes the love of a good woman-to be exact, Emily Colfax (Hellena Westcott)-to cure Frank of his chronic prevarications. Written on rottentomatoes.com

    Reviews:
An old friend from the army John Larkin arrives in Virginia City and Lorne Greene welcomes him. Larkin also gets a warm reception from Helen Westcott a well to do 30 something woman.

Larkin is nothing more than a traveling salesperson, but he's in the Harold Hill tradition and blows a lot of smoke. He inadvertently creates a lot of ill will toward the Ponderosa with his tall tales.

Larkin and Westcott are a fine romantic pair who prove in that line from the song, 'love isn't just for the young'. Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com

    4:23

Bonanza, the first western broadcast in colour, recounted the story of the Cartwrights, a fictional family of ranchers living in the mid-1800s, near Virginia City, Nevada, an actual mining boomtown. The Cartwrights were an all-male family headed by Ben (played by Lorne Greene), thrice a widower with a son from each marriage: Adam (Pernell Roberts), Hoss (Dan Blocker), and Little Joe (Michael Landon). Adam, the eldest, was serious and responsible, while Hoss was gregarious and oafish, and Little Joe was rashly romantic.
