    Hydrogen energy storage in ammonia is not something that would be instinctively obvious to most of us, but the folks in the energy industry are apparently getting quite excited about the concept. It's a far safer, easier and more energy dense way to transport hydrogen around the world and could be the final cog in the gears of a true hydrogen economy of the future. But some warn that it could actually be a smokescreen enabling the fossil fuel industry to continue burning huge quantities of natural gas and maintain their vice-like grip on the global energy market.

    Toyota has developed a hydrogen combustion engine with nearly negligible harmful emissions. The project involved a Toyota Corolla Sport which participated in a 24 hour endurance race, using a 1.6L turbo inline three-cylinder out of the GR Yaris. The idea was to convert a gasoline engine to a hydrogen engine, as an alternative to creating new electric cars. With hydrogen combustion, oxygen and hydrogen are burned, providing useful work, with water as the only main emissions.

    Naoaki Ito, one of the lead engineers on the project, puts it well: “For this hydrogen-powered engine, the engine itself remains the same as before. Our concept for this project was to create a hydrogen engine by using as much of the existing internal combustion technology as possible. We thought that achieving this would enable the conversion of existing car engines to hydrogen, providing a powerful weapon in the quest for carbon neutrality.”

    Green hydrogen produces zero emissions and many believe it holds the key to limiting global warming. So is it the big hope for the future or a multi-billion euro mistake?

    Many believe green hydrogen could provide a miracle solution for countries around the world seeking to decarbonize their economies. But the technology is still in its infancy. Generating sufficient quantities of green hydrogen would require a lot more renewable energy than is currently available. Right now, almost all hydrogen is produced using natural gas in a process that generates large amounts of carbon dioxide. Green hydrogen, by contrast, is climate neutral. It's derived using renewable energy. The principle itself is not new but has, at yet, only found limited usage.
    Engineers at the German Aerospace Center are now working with the world's largest artificial sun to try to produce hydrogen without any electricity at all, using only light. If they can succeed, it would allow large-scale production of this valuable gas in countries that receive a lot of sunshine. Hydrogen is already being used as a fuel for buses, trains and cars, with hydrogen-powered planes due to follow shortly. Hydrogen is even the fuel of choice for space rockets, and German submarines glide along almost in silence thanks to hydrogen fuel cells. Manufacturers of airplanes, trucks, and even steel are investing millions in the technology, hoping that hydrogen will be the go-to fuel of a climate-neutral future. But critics warn of major challenges ahead, saying billions stand to be wasted.

Tesla’s dominance in the zero-emissions market may not mean as much if consumers see the benefits fuel cell vehicles can offer.

    Alternative solutions restricted by changing environmental conditions.

    Energy suppliers are facing these major challengers with no real solution in sight.That is - until now.

    ‘H2 Innovation Lab’ discovered and developed a means of - Clean, - Safe - renewable - self-sustaining hydrogen energy. Capable of handling virtually any load, with zero carbon emissions, not reliant on wind, solar or river flow. An energy source that is not detrimental to our health nor threatens the future of our children if things go wrong. An energy source that will not run out as will limited supply of fossil fuels and uranium.

    A recent breakthrough in science has discovered a means of sustainable self-powering hydrogen energy generation. A self-sustaining system so efficient that the output energy is 22 times greater than the input energy.

    To demonstrate this is the visible hydrogen output from conventional commercial electrolysis running at just one Kilowatt. Now this is the output of this enhanced electrolysis running at the same power of 1 kilowatt or less.

    Self-sustaining energy with a 2000% efficiency opens doors to so many opportunities. Stimulating a rapid move to hydrogen fuelled power stations, On-site, self-powering satellite stations and micro stations independent from the grid. Fuelled by abundant rain, lake river, bore and sea water. Owned and maintained by the energy suppliers. Totally scale-able to meat any energy demand in virtually any location and easily integrating into existing infrastructure.

    Fossil fuels are all finite resources. They take thousands of years to produce and the natural supply will run out. After the peek all those coal and oil fuelled power stations will have to be decommissioned. Earths supply of uranium used in nuclear power generation is also finite.

    Land consuming wind turbines and solar panels are a step in the right direction, but they just can not replace the energy requirements that fossil fuel and nuclear stations are struggling to deliver. Main power transmission lines that deliver power to towns and cities are costly and inefficient. The loss of electricity as heat due to the cable resistance is huge.

    One practical solution is to support or replace those power stations, transmission lines, substations and transformers with localised self-powering hydrogen energy stations.

    Satellite power and hydrogen supply station truly make sense. The land usage would be a small portion of that used for wind and solar farms along with transmission equipment. In addition to powering our homes, the local station can also fuel residents hydrogen cars - the car of the 21st century.

    Hydrogen extracted from water is the ultimate renewable fuel. When striped from water and converted to energy it reverts back to water making an endless cycle with a 0% loss and a 0% carbon emission. Also comparatively safer than most fuels and infinite in supply.

    Hydrogen will soon be the predominant fuel, the question is which energy corporation is going to be associated with the technology that paves the way to our future energy supply.

    Hydrogen is the most simple chemical element on earth. As a matter of fact, atoms are composed by a single proton and a single electron. That’s why hydrogen is the first element in the periodic table. Many think wrongly that hydrogen is an energy source, however it actually is an ENERGY VECTOR, because it can accumulate and provide that energy. For example, this process happens with fuel cells, which generate electricity using a hydrogen chemical reaction, producing water, heat and especially electricity as a by-product. Even though hydrogen is the most abundant chemical substance in the universe, on our planet it can be produced using several internal resources such as fossil fuels like natural gas and coal, water, nuclear energy, and other renewable energy sources like biomass, wind, solar, geothermal and a wide array of processes.
    Hydrogen can be produced:
    • At or near the point of use;
    • In larger facilities and then delivered to the point of use;
    • In intermediate-size facilities located in close proximity (usually from 25 to 100 miles) to the point of use.
    Hydrogen can be produced using several different processes.
    THERMOCHEMICAL PROCESSES use heat and chemical reactions to release hydrogen from organic materials like fossil fuels and biomass.
    Water can be split into hydrogen and oxygen by ELECTROLYTIC PROCESSES or by solar energy through PHOTOLYTIC PROCESSES.
    Microorganisms such as bacteria and algae can produce hydrogen through BIOLOGICAL PROCESSES.
    Let’s see the most common technologies for hydrogen production for each process.
    THERMOCHEMICAL PROCESSES, as the name says, use heat and chemical reactions to extract hydrogen from molecular structure of natural gas, coal, biomass, and even water.
    NATURAL GAS REFORMING is the most commonly used method for hydrogen production and the reaction is made with hydrocarbons like methane. Natural gas contains methane, that can be used to produce hydrogen by thermochemical processes, like STEAM REFORMING and PARTIAL OXIDATION.
    In the STEAM REFORMING the methane and other hydrocarbons react with high-temperature steam under pressure and in the presence of a catalyst the reaction is accelerated.
    The reaction products are hydrogen and carbon monoxide. The steam reforming process is endothermic, that means heat must be supplied to the process for the reaction to proceed, usually burning part of the methane.
    STEAM REFORMING REACTION
    In PARTIAL OXIDATION instead, methane reacts with a limited amount of oxygen, which is not sufficient to completely oxidize the hydrocarbons to carbon dioxide and water. The reaction products are always hydrogen and carbon monoxide, but, as you can see in chemical reactions, the partial oxidation produces less hydrogen with the same amount of fuel than is obtained by STEAM REFORMING. However PARTIAL OXIDATION OF METHANE is an exothermic process, which means it gives heat, that’s why it is much faster than STEAM REFORMING.
    PARTIAL OXIDATION OF METHANE REACTION
    Subsequently, in both processes carbon monoxide and steam react together with a catalyst in the so-called “WATER-GAS SHIFT REACTION” producing carbon dioxide and more hydrogen. In the final step of the process, called “pressure-swing adsorption”, carbon dioxide is removed, leaving pure hydrogen as a result.
    WATER-GAS SHIFT REACTION
    Let’s talk about ELECTROLYTIC PROCESSES, where electricity is used to make chemical reactions.
    The most common process is ELECTROLYSIS OF WATER, where water is split into hydrogen and oxygen using electricity .
    This could be a sustainable method for producing hydrogen, because there would be no green-house emission during renewable resources production.
    In the ELECTROLYSIS OF WATER the electrolytic cell is made by an anode and a cathode and they are split by an electrolyte as in fuel cells, however the process taking place inside the latter is the exact opposite.
    As you can see in this polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolyzer, the electrolyte is made of a strong plastic material.
    Water reacts at the anode to form:
    - oxygen;
    - positively charged hydrogen ions (or protons), that move across the polymer electrolyte membrane up to the cathode;
    - electrons, that flow through an external circuit to the cathode, like protons.
    At the cathode, hydrogen ions combine with electrons from the external circuit to form hydrogen gas...

Before that, Henri worked at the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency in Paris between 2011 and 2019, as Senior Analyst and Deputy Head of the Division of Nuclear Technology Development and Economics. Prior to these positions, he worked as R&D Program Manager at the Alstom Power Company and at the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) in various positions. A French national, he holds a PhD in Computational Fluid Dynamics (for aeronautics applications) from the Free University of Brussels, a Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Michigan and an Engineering Diploma from the French Ecole Nationale Superieure de Techniques Avancees (ENSTA).     Today, 95% of the hydrogen produced in Europe is of fossil origin and a major emitter of CO2. For the EU to achieve carbon neutrality, hydrogen must be produced in a way that emits low amounts of CO2.

    One way to do this is to produce hydrogen by electrolysis, using largely decarbonised electricity from the grid. Electricity grids based on renewables and nuclear allow hydrogen to be produced close to industrial consumption centres (without having to rely on dedicated hydrogen pipelines).

    Sometimes called “purple hydrogen”, using nuclear electricity for hydrogen production can complement the production of “green hydrogen” (renewable) as it both offers the benefit of low emissions and steady electricity input for electrolysers, allowing large amounts of hydrogen to be produced.

    Hydrogen cars are rare now, but that may change in the future - and as more appear on the roads, you'll want to know more about them so you can compare them to a future electric car. After all, from 2025 in the UK, you will not be able to buy a new car that does not have an electric motor.

    Hydrogen cars are also known as hydrogen fuel cell cars, are a type of passenger vehicle that separates from electric cars. Hydrogen-powered cars are more similar to electric cars in the fact that they have no internal combustion engine. Here is everything you need to know about hydrogen cars and whether they are better than electric cars.
    A hydrogen fuel cell car has a hydrogen tank that feeds a fuel cell with high-pressure hydrogen gas that'll mix with oxygen. This mix starts an electrochemical reaction that produces electricity to power the electric motor. This means hydrogen cars have characteristics of both electric cars (due to the use of electric energy and motor) and conventional petrol cars (because of the tank). However, they represent a unique share of the transportation market, and they're also called FCVs (Fuel Cell Vehicles) or FCEVs (Full Cell Electric Vehicles).

    Fuel cells are the main component of hydrogen-powered cars. Think of them as the maestro of all the processes happening inside the car so that it has the energy to move. Long story short, fuel cells turn the stored hydrogen gas (by mixing it with oxygen) into electricity. This electricity is then used to power an electric motor to propel the vehicle without any toxic tailpipe emissions. In fact, the only by-product of the whole process is water and heat due to the connection of hydrogen and oxygen atoms that form H20 molecules.
