  • Turbulent Flow is MORE Awesome Than Laminar Flow

    18:32

Everyone loves laminar flow but turbulent flow is the real MVP.
A portion of this video was sponsored by Cottonelle. Purchase Cottonelle Flushable Wipes and try them for yourself:

    Special thanks to:
    Prof. Beverley McKeon and team
    Destin from Smarter Every Day
    Nicole Sharp from FYFD
    Pavol Dobryakov turbulent simulations:

I got into turbulent flow via chaos. The transition to turbulence sometimes involves a period doubling. Turbulence itself is chaotic motion, it is unpredictable and sensitively dependent on initial conditions. What surprised me is all the ways turbulent flow is useful to us. It is diffusive, meaning it causes mixing. This is useful in jet engines or rocket nozzles (which Destin studies) and is important to achieve in microfluidic devices, which are so small that turbulent flow is actually difficult to achieve. Turbulent flow can energize a boundary layer, which is important to maintain flow attachment over a wing, maintaining lift and delaying stall. Similarly a turbulent boundary layer over a golf ball reduces pressure drag allowing golf balls to fly further. This is the reason for the dimples on golf balls. Flow transitioning to turbulence in the wake of a bluff body can create periodic vortex shedding. This beautiful phenomenon can be seen in the von Kàrmàn vortex street in clouds viewed from space. Turbulence is everywhere, in the air currents in a room, in your aorta, in the breaths you exhale, in oil pipelines and water pipes, in the flow over cars and ships and planes. Animals have evolved for it (like dead fish swimming up stream) and we have engineered our environment, our planes and golf balls for it. Laminar flow may be nice to look at (which is why we use it in decorative fountains) but turbulent flow does the real lifting.

There are tons of interesting career opportunities out there that I never knew about:

The Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks offers incredible opportunities to research Arctic regions. They OWN A ROCKET RANGE. They do things like predict Aurora and monitor seismic and volcanic activity. I wish I knew about this when I was younger.

Check out the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

The US Navy has several options such as engineer, pilot, submariner, logistics, accountant, medical doctor, and even Public Affairs specialist. I continue to be impressed by people that I meed who spent time in the Navy. I worked with various people during the course of filming this video and they were all top notch.

I asked Sofia to write a little blurb about her job experience: Sofia Montalvo is an Ice Analyst at the US National Ice Center (USNIC). She studied meteorology at the University of Miami and atmospheric science at North Carolina State University, but did not know that mapping and forecasting sea ice for safety and navigation was a thing she could do. She loves her job for the mission it upholds: The USNIC Operations Department Analysts use remote sensing and model data to produce hemispheric, regional, and tailored ice and snow analyses. The Operations department is committed to the safety of navigation, protection of life and property, and government scientific research.

  • Submarine that Will DESTROY the World in 30 minutes

    10:55

What do you know about the most armed world known submarines?
The U- boats are the most destructive weapon system created by humankind and a huge honor of each Navy.
The attack submarine is capable of sea- and land-attack through conventional and nuclear means.
Beyond their most obvious uses, U-boats can be used in support of Special Forces operations and reconnaissance work.
Many world navies utilize the boats, primarily as a deterrent element in territorial waters.
While they have thankfully never been used during a shooting war, nuclear-powered submarines carrying nuclear-tipped missiles are the most deadly weapons mankind has ever devised.
In some cases during the height of the Cold War—even a single vessel could reduce as many as 288 city-sized targets into radioactive ash in less than 30 minutes. Indeed, these vessel and their payloads could end human civilization in less time than it takes to order a pizza.
In this video, we have picked five of the most capable nuclear-armed submarines that are either in service or will soon enter service. This 5 Submarines Could Destroy The World In 30 Minutes. And there isn’t any way to stop them.

For the first time in three years, the US Navy has mobilised three aircraft carrier strike groups to the Pacific as a part of a provocative military build-up against China. The deployments underscore the strategic shift by the Pentagon from the so-called “war on terror” to great power competition that heightens the danger of conflict between nuclear-armed powers.

    45:37

A team of Russian paratroopers skydive onto the frozen Arctic Ocean to build this extraordinary ice camp. Battling temperatures as low as -40° C, they will carve a unique airport on the drifting ice. From here tourists, scientists and explorers will set out to conquer, investigate and discover the secrets of the North Pole. They have just three weeks to realise their dreams before Barneo melts into the sea.

While the advance team build the airport, Barneo's logistics team are based in the Norwegian town of Longyearbyen, 600miles south. Their job is to handle the demands of the hundreds of visitors heading for the area. Amongst the polar hopefuls are six UK office workers, making a trek to the pole to raise 250,000 for a children's health charity. Twenty year-old skydiver Johnny Strange is attempting to enter the record books as the youngest person to complete the 'Adventurers Grand Slam' by climbing the highest peak on each continent and standing at both poles. Also on the way are a group of Japanese tourists on a luxury trip to the pole by helicopter.

China's People's Liberation Army Navy plans to conduct a large-scale amphibious assault drill off Hainan Island in August, according to the Japan Times.

Citing unnamed Chinese sources, the Japan Times reports the drill will involve landing ships, hovercraft and helicopters, while the carrier Shandong has been deployed in Hainan since December last year.

The exercise is designed to simulate a navy and marines attack on the Taiwan-held Pratas, a strategically important islet that sits astride China's military egress from Hainan to the Pacific Ocean.

According to Reuters, Taiwan in April announced plans to buy arms from France to upgrade its fleet of six French-made La Fayette-class frigates.

The U.S. Naval Institute reports a U.S. Navy Arleigh Burke-class destroyer made a transit through the Taiwan Strait to warn Beijing's leadership against taking aggressive action in the region.

The Japan Times reports U.S. electronic warfare aircraft may have passed the strait 14 times in April alone.

According to Taiwan's state-run Central News Agency, a Chinese Y-8 aircraft flew into Taiwan's air defense identification zone before being headed off by fighter jets on April 8.

This is the seventh time Chinese military planes flew near Taiwan's airspace this year.

  • Adam Savages Favorite High-Power LED Flashlight!

    6:29

For today's Show and Tell, Adam brings out an incredible LED flashlight that was gifted to him years ago by some friends at Google. This ridiculous flashlight combines four high power LEDs with custom reflectors for a combined 3000 lumens of brightness that can easily light up an entire room. And Adam's favorite part about it may be its development codename. Now you know why Adam had to build a lithium-ion battery gang charger!

  • CNC Fixturing Trick: Window Machining + Hot Glue!

    9:26

CNC milling technique that works on 3 axis, 4 axis, AND 5 axis machines. We're using a machining strategy that removes outer areas of stock material, leaving the part framed in the center, called window machining.
In this video, we're machining a decal squeegee that doesn't have geometry to easily hold. Although we're 5-axis machining this part, this technique still applies to CNC milling machines of any axis. Once the stock has been machined, hot glue will hold the part in place while the remaining tabs are removed. Although it doesn't lend itself to automation or lights out production, it's still a great tool to have in your back pocket, especially for parts that are tricky to hold.
