I asked Sofia to write a little blurb about her job experience: Sofia Montalvo is an Ice Analyst at the US National Ice Center (USNIC). She studied meteorology at the University of Miami and atmospheric science at North Carolina State University, but did not know that mapping and forecasting sea ice for safety and navigation was a thing she could do. She loves her job for the mission it upholds: The USNIC Operations Department Analysts use remote sensing and model data to produce hemispheric, regional, and tailored ice and snow analyses. The Operations department is committed to the safety of navigation, protection of life and property, and government scientific research.

  • Nothing Can Kill the Seawolf-class Submarine

    8:53

The Seawolf class is a class of nuclear-powered fast attack submarines (SSN) in service with the United States Navy. The class was the intended successor to the Los Angeles class, and design work began in 1983. A fleet of 29 submarines was to be built over a ten-year period, but that was reduced to 12 submarines.

The end of the Cold War and budget constraints led to the cancellation of any further additions to the fleet in 1995, leaving the Seawolf class limited to just three boats. This, in turn, led to the design of the smaller Virginia class. The Seawolf class cost about $3 billion per unit ($3.5 billion for USS Jimmy Carter), making it the most expensive SSN submarine and second most expensive submarine ever, after the French SSBN Triomphant class.

  • Here Comes the US Navys New Stealth Submarine

    9:35

The USS Montana will be a Virginia-class submarine of the United States Navy. She will honor the U.S. State of Montana. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus announced its name on 3 September 2015 at a ceremony hosted in Billings, Montana with U.S. Senator Jon Tester (D-MT). She will be only the second commissioned warship bearing the name Montana.

A contract modification for USS Oregon (SSN-793), Montana (SSN-794), and USS Hyman G. Rickover (SSN-795) was initially awarded to General Dynamics Electric Boat for $594.7 million in April 2012. On 23 December 2014, they were awarded an additional $121.8 million contract modification to buy long lead-time material for the three Virginia-class submarines. The U.S. Navy awarded General Dynamics Electric Boat the contract to construct 10 Block IV Virginia-class submarines for $17.6 billion on 28 April 2014. The tenth boat is scheduled for delivery in 2023.

  • This Is How Americas Nuclear-Submarine get Resupplied at Sea

    8:25

The U.S. Navy just tested a new delivery system for supplying submarines while underway at sea—by drone. In a video released by the Navy, a large quadcopter-type drone seen hovering above the deck of a ballistic-missile submarine. A small payload, not much larger than a small backpack, dangled from a line attached to the drone. Despite the gentle rolling of the submarine’s hull, the drone successfully made the drop. The video description read:

“An unmanned aerial vehicle delivers a payload to the Ohio-class ballistic-missile submarine USS Henry M. Jackson (SSBN-730) around the Hawaiian Islands. Underway replenishment sustains the fleet anywhere/anytime. This event was designed to test and evaluate the tactics, techniques, and procedures of U.S. Strategic Command's expeditionary logistics and enhance the overall readiness of our strategic forces.”

  • How to Hunt with Sonar

    17:06

These are the real-world sonar methods for conducting submarine warfare.
Sonar is the primary tool in Submarine Warfare. As in movies like Hunt for Red October and Crimson Tide, we need some basic information about the target before we destroy it. Classification is key for ensuring the proper use of deadly force. Then we use sonar techniques to calculate the general direction of motion, range, and target speed.

*note* This is a corrected video of one I produced in early 2020. I kept it private because of a small math error in the end. I fixed the error with on-screen graphics. Enjoy, How to Hunt with Sonar.

The Seawolf-class submarines are outstanding submarines, The resulting submarine is according to the U.S. Navy ten times quieter over the full range of operating speeds than the Improved Los Angeles submarines, and an astonishing seventy times quieter than the original Los Angeles–class submarines. It can run quietly at twice the speed of previous boats.

    Subject: Submarine Navigation

Speaker: James Taylor OBE FRIN, Submariner and Past President

Abstract: Since their inception at the start of the 20th century, over time and warfare submarines have made the transition from small submersible craft of limited range to today’s nuclear-powered attack or strategic missile-firing submarines. In the beginning, the Royal Navy saw submarines as no fit place for an Officer and a Gentleman, such that for decades afterwards, the Submarine Service was “The Trade”. The First World War saw them come into their own. The Second World War saw something remarkably similar. A major part of the fascination with submarines is their ability to move in three dimensions, unseen. These are the original Stealth Fighters, so how do they navigate.
