The submarine is the single most powerful piece of military hardware that has ever been devised. Just think about this for a moment; a single nuclear submarine today carries more firepower than was unleashed by all the armed forces of the Second World War.

One big question is: could submarines of the future become stealthy and completely silent, like the fictional one from Tom Clancy’s Red October? You should be afraid if this ever becomes a reality because this submarine was built solely as a first-strike weapon… and what a devastating weapon it would be.

They can also be used in a devastating retaliation against another nation’s missile bases and airfields. In fact, the USA keeps half of its nuclear arsenal on submarines either as a possible first-strike weapon or… or in retaliation as a deterrent to a nuclear strike.

This U.S. Navy Training Film is about the basic WW2 submarine structure and systems. It is a description of the pressure hulls, tanks and super-structure.

The submarine shown at the end of the film is the USS Tusk (SS-426), a Balao class submarine. She was the only ship of the United States Navy to be named for the tusk. Her keel was laid down on 23 August 1943 and she was launched on 8 July 1945. She is one of the last two operational submarines in the world built during World War 2.

    The Balao-class submarines:
The Balao-class was a successful design of United States Navy submarine used during World War II, and with 120 units completed, the largest class of submarines in the United States Navy. An improvement on the earlier Gato-class, the Balao-class submarines had slight internal differences. The most significant improvement was the use of thicker, higher yield strength steel in the pressure hull skins and frames, which increased their test depth to 400 feet (120 m).

  • How Deep Can A Submarine Go?

    7:31

Whatever you need a website for, create yours today with Wix:

What is the deepest submarines can go? Can submarines reach Mariana Trench? Can submarines go even deeper than that?

On January 23, 1960, the Trieste touched down on the sandy soil at the bottom of Challenger Deep, the deepest part of the Mariana trench and deepest point in the world. At a depth of 35,815 feet (10,916 meters), the Trieste withstood an incredible 1.25 metric tons per square centimeter of pressure, although the single plexiglass window had cracked on the way down, giving American Don Walsh and Frenchman Jacques Piccard a good scare. Yet the Trieste was not a submarine, but rather a bathyscaphe, specifically designed to withstand the tremendous pressure. In today’s episode of the The Infographics Show, we ask, how deep can submarines go?

  • How Does a Submarine Sink and Rise? Soda Bottle Diver | Cartesian Diver Physics Experiment

    7:21

How Can a Submarine Sink and Rise? Cartesian Diver

Hello. I’m Dr. Bruce Denardo here in the Physics Lecture
Demonstrations Laboratory at the Naval Postgraduate School in
    Monterey, California.

How can a submarine sink or rise?

One way is to change the amount of water in the ballast
tanks. But how does this cause sinking or rising? We can understand the behavior by considering a simple physics demonstration called a Cartesian diver.

Submarine showing air vents, water intake,
and double hull which serves as the ballast tank.

Demo Here is our Cartesian diver apparatus. It is a flexible clear 2-
liter soda bottle with an inverted glass test tube inside. The test tube is open, and it contains some air.

The yellow tape around the tube and cork at the top of the bottle allow the test tube to be clearly seen in a classroom. The bottle is filled with water and securely capped.

There is enough air to make the test tube float. Without the air, it will sink.

There are different ways that the diver can be made to
    sink and rise.

One is by telekinesis: using only your mind to move
objects. This takes a lot of practice and concentration.

The Cartesian diver is a well-known physics
demonstration and toy. There are many versions of it, and you can
    even make one at home!

Here is an old version. Another type is a simple medicine
dropper. Some condiment packages of ketchup, mustard, soy sauce, or whatever can also work!

Googling “cartesian diver” yields tens of thousands of results,
and there are also many discussions on it in educational scientific
    journals.

The apparatus may have been discovered by René
    Descartes.

However, the first thorough and printed account was in 1648
by a contemporary of Descartes named Raffaello Magiotti, who
claimed to have discovered it. Magiotti was a favorite student of
    Galileo.

To understand the Cartesian diver, we first need to
recognize something about fluids, which are liquids or gases.

In gravity, a body in a fluid experiences not only a downward gravitational force but also an upward force. This force is called the buoyant force.

The buoyant force occurs because the pressure in the fluid
increases with depth, due to a greater amount of fluid that is supported above.

For example, if you go deep enough in a pool, your ears will hurt due to the increased pressure. This increase causes the upward force on the bottom of a body to be greater than the downward force on the top. The net effect is an upward buoyant force.

The buoyant force is quantitatively given by Archimedes’ law: the buoyant force on a body in a fluid equals the weight of the fluid
displaced by the body. You can find a proof in an introductory physics textbook.

From Archimedes’ law, the condition for sinking is easy to
remember: Sinking occurs when the average density of the body (total mass divided by total volume) is greater than the density of the fluid.

Demo Let me set up a simple demonstration. Consider the test tube with no air. The density of glass is greater than the density of water, so the test tube sinks.

We can now explain the Cartesian diver demonstration.
Demo Look carefully at the air in the test tube. When the bottle is
squeezed, water moves into the tube, causing the air compress.

This happens because the water is incompressible.

Let’s consider the diver to be the glass, air, and water inside the test tube. The diver then has constant volume, but its mass
increases when the bottle is squeezed because water enters the test tube. So its average density increases. Once this density is greater
than the density of water, Archimedes’ law tells us that the body will sink!

In submarines, the ballast tanks are used to increase or
decrease the mass while the volume is constant, just as we have seen with the Cartesian diver. This is one way that submarines can be made to sink or rise.

As the container is squeezed, the volume of air in the
test tube decreases. The body sinks when the buoyant
force becomes less than the gravitational force.
    water gravity

    Test Tube Cartesian Diver System

The Cartesian diver is an old popular physics
demonstration and toy. The apparatus is simple, and you can make
    one at home.

We use an inverted glass test tube. Squeezing the container
causes water to flow into the tube, which compresses the air, so the average density of the diver increases. By Archimedes’ law, once the average density is greater than the density of water, the diver sinks.

This explains one way that submarines can or sink or rise.

Pumping enough water into the ballast tanks can cause sinking, and pumping enough water out of these tanks can cause rising.
On camera Can the Cartesian diver effect be used to understand how scuba divers and most fish sink or rise? Yes! We consider this in our second video on the Cartesian diver.

    ???? Video Information:-
Designed and built to hunt and destroy hostile submarines and ships, Submarines are the wolfs of the sea. They must have great sonar in order to detect their prey. Combined with this, attack submarines need to close on their targets with the minimal chance of detection. Some of the latest attack submarines can launch cruise missiles against ships and land targets. Apart from armament and radar/Sonar, stealthiness is the main factor deciding which attack submarine is the best. In this video, we present the top 10 Attack Submarines in the world.
    Enjoy watching the video, cheers!

The film tacks together two tales: a historical account of Tesla's eventful life and his pioneering research into physics and bold experiments with electricity.
Suffering from a fatal malady as a child the future great physicist promised his parents that he would recover under the sole condition...if they allowed him to become an engineer. And he kept his promise. Never ending yearning for knowledge, research practice, creative endeavor, discoveries that have unfixed all established notions -- that's what was the characteristic of the great physicist. Nikola Tesla would always remain a scientist whose life was a sort of mystification rather than pure reality.

  • Stupendous Submarine Volcanoes

    3:13

This is the moment that a volcano erupts underneath the sea…

Although relatively little is known about them, it’s believed there are over 1 million submarine volcanoes, largely located along the mid-atlantic ridge.

These volcanoes are responsible for producing 75% of the earth’s magma.

Underwater volcanoes are understood to work like their counterparts on dry land.

They form towering mountains submerged well below sea level - some reported to rise as much as 10,000 feet above the seabed.

Whilst it’s relatively rare to see, these eruptions can also create new islands above the water.

On November 14th, 1963, a trawler sailing just south of Iceland noticed a plume of smoke billowing from the sea. Thinking it was a fire on board another ship, they travelled towards what was, in fact an underwater volcano erupting and witnessed the birth of a new island. It was named Surtsey after fire giants of Norse mythology.

Today, the island of Surtsey is a UNESCO world heritage site, and the only people allowed to set foot on it are the scientists studying the ecosystem and geology of this unspoiled isle.

It’s thought that Iceland itself was created in this way by underwater volcanoes, millions of years ago. So whilst it may be rare to see one erupt, these submarine volcanoes have a big part to play in shaping the world above water.

  • PHYSICAL PRINCIPLES OF THE SUBMARINE HOW DOES A SUBMARINE WORK? 20084

    11:09

The Submarine Part I: Physical Principles is a short Navy training film produced by Audio Productions, Inc. in 1940. The film, using animation, presents an overview of the key physical principles of how a submarine operates. The film starts with footage of a sub surfacing (00:37) before switching to animation to demonstrate the physical principles. First is Archimedes’ Law of Buoyancy (00:50) and Force of Buoyancy (02:00), as the film discusses how to change buoyancy through engineering water and air displacement. The film then discusses Fore and Aft Balance, based on Archimedes’ Law of the Lever (06:10); keeping the center of gravity in line with the center of buoyancy is how subs stay level. The film then quickly shows the effects of tilt on a sub (07:53), before ending the animation and concluding the film as it began—with footage of a submarine surfacing (10:35).

  • Good News, Getting closer for the Philippines getting a submarine from France!

    10:02

Some members of the Philippine Navy will learn about best practices in submarine warfare from French Navy experts.

Subject exchanges are ongoing in preparation for the future acquisition of the Philippine Navy submarine, the head of navy public affairs Lcmdr. Christina Roxas said in a statement.

The second naval exchange began at the Philippine Navy headquarters in Manila. The French delegation will also visit the Philippine Fleet, the Naval Installation Command, the Naval Systems Command, and the Naval Information and Technology Center in the coming days.

The contingent was led by Colonel Emmanuel Peltriaux, a non-resident attaché to the Philippines. He joined the CDM. Jean-Christophe Marie and Cmdr. Jeremy Bachelier, both specialist French Submarine Troops and Surface Troops.

This training was the result of bilateral talks between Deputy Naval Chief Robert Adedrad and his French counterpart Adm Christophe Prazuck during the EURONAVAL 2018 Exhibition held in Paris, France last October.

The French Navy is committed to sending a team of subject matter experts from various battlefields to Manila who can contribute to the Philippine Navy's submarine warfare capability development program, Roxas said.

The assistant chief of the naval staff for Plans and Programs, N5, Captain Juario Marayag expressed his gratitude for the commitment of the French Armed Forces to assist the Navy's modernization program through education and training.

Kolt Peltriaux said that this involvement was very important because it enhanced and promoted bilateral cooperation between the two countries, Roxas said.

The Scorpene diesel-electric submarine produced by French defense contractor Naval Group is one of the submarines considered by the Philippine Navy as a source for future acquisition of submarines.

Last year, Defense Minister Delfin Lorenzana signed a non-binding defense cooperation agreement with his French counterpart, Florence Parly, in line with potential acquisition of submarines.
