  • How The Norsemen Became The Seafaring Vikings | Wings Of A Dragon | Timeline

    52:04

For nearly 500 years the Norse people dominated the oceans, known by their remarkable ships and known for their death, destruction and burning down of anything in their way. They used sophisticated navigation methods and navigated safely over remarkably long distances.

Relive the time when the Viking dragon – an emblem of terror and devastation – flew from the shores of Scandinavia, across seas and rivers, to the rest of Europe and beyond.

  • History of the Vikings: Norse Culture, Religion, Seafaring and Famous Warriors

    17:37

This documentary on the history of the Vikings covers the beginning of the Viking Age, the Norse and Viking Culture, Norse Mythology and Religion, Ships, Trade, Famous Vikings such as Ragnar Lothbrock, Ivar the Boneless, Bjorn Ironside and Lagertha, and the Legacy of the Vikings.

The Vikings were Scandinavians from Norway, Sweden and Denmark who took to the seas with the intention of raiding lands and gaining wealth during the period which is known as the Viking Age which is commonly dated between 793 and around 1100 CE. They were not only known as Vikings but also Norsemen, Rus, and Northmen among others. The Vikings were primarily agriculturalists who set off not only to raid lands for loot, but also to establish communities for farming and raising animals.

Norse mythology consisted of a cosmology or story of the beginning of the universe, the nine realms of the world tree Yggdrasil and the end of the world known as Ragnarok. What remains of textual sources of Norse mythology is only the very surface of the history, since, at the time, Scandinavia was primarily an oral society. Norse mythology, as an integral part of the everyday lives of the Scandinavian people, influenced the raids, because in doing so, the Vikings emulated the lives of their gods. The brave warriors went to battle against forces that they saw as chaotic and dangerous, since nothing about the Christian faith aligned with the Norse beliefs at all. The Norsemen showed no mercy to enemies once they perfected the art of shipbuilding and began to ‘go Viking.’

Nearly 1,000 years ago, the Vikings left Scandinavia and settled across Europe - giving their name to Normandy along the way - before their Norman descendants seized the English throne at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. But what do we really know about them? By combining expert analysis with compelling drama, 'The Last Journey of the Vikings' (Swedish title: 'Vikingarnas sista resa') tells a new and often surprising story about this complex people.

The ferocious seafaring vikings were a feared Scandinavian invader from the late 700’s AD. Over three centuries their ships carried the ruthless warriors to nearby and distant lands, which included the British Isles and northern Europe. They ranged as far as Northern Africa, the Middle East, the Mediterranean and present day Turkey and Canada. Doing battle as pirates, raiders and traders, the Viking voyagers formed settlements and governments in many parts of the world, establishing themselves and their descendents as rulers and nobility.

In which John Green teaches you about Vikings! That's right, one of our most requested subjects, the Vikings, right here on Crash Course. So what's the deal with Vikings? Well, the stuff you've heard about them may not be true. The Vikings weren't just pagan raiders striking terror into the hearts of defenseless European Christendom. They were some of the greatest travelers of their time, and they weren't always traveling to steal. In a lot of cases, they were traveling to trade. John will teach you about Viking trade goods, Norse Mythology, and yes, there will be blood, guts, and dragons. OK?

  • Ancient Norse Vikings | History Documentary

    47:47

Popular, modern conceptions of the Vikings—the term frequently applied casually to their modern descendants and the inhabitants of modern Scandinavia—often strongly differ from the complex picture that emerges from archaeology and historical sources. A romanticized picture of Vikings as noble savages began to emerge in the 18th century; this developed and became widely propagated during the 19th-century Viking revival.[4][5] Perceived views of the Vikings as alternatively violent, piratical heathens or as intrepid adventurers owe much to conflicting varieties of the modern Viking myth that had taken shape by the early 20th century. Current popular representations of the Vikings are typically based on cultural clichés and stereotypes, complicating modern appreciation of the Viking legacy.

  • Viking Longships: How Norsemen Ruled the Waves

    14:29

As Vikings forsook the traditional stay-at-home ways of their ancestors and neighbors, venturing further than the mellow river passages of their home regions, raids became increasingly frequent on European shores. The Vikings used their ship-building supremacy to reach targets faster than any mainland vessel, often targeting vulnerable coastal positions. Without the revolutionary longship, the Viking Age would not have been possible.

The predominant modern image of the mighty Viking warriors has become that of the warmonger and marauding berserker. In popular culture, the Norsemen, portrayed as giant, sword-wielding men with flowing hair and bushy beards, have been reduced to a one-dimensional tribe of ruthless warriors, who cared little for the communities they attacked and plundered.

Men like Ragnar Lothbrok, Eric Bloodaxe, Ivar the Boneless and Bjorn Ironside are portrayed as preying on unsuspecting communities and spreading fear across Europe as they laid waste to all that lay before them, taking what they wanted at the point of a sword.

It is true that the Vikings were, without a doubt, brutal men living in a brutal age. They did use their skills as warriors to relentlessly attack Europe and the British Isles to increase their wealth and territory, but that is not all the Vikings were, and their contribution to world history is far more than warmongering.

Sheep-farming archaeologist, Francis Pryor, presents a brand new historical series which explores Britain A.D, the British national character and the ultimate British icon King Arthur.

Finding new and previously unexplained evidence, Francis Pryor overturns the idea that Britain reverted to a state of anarchy and disorder after the Romans left in 410 AD. Instead of doom and gloom Francis discovers a continuous culture that assimilated influences from as far a field as the Middle East and Constantinople. Through scrutinising the myth of King Arthur to find out what was really going on when the Romans left, Francis is confronted by evidence that confounds traditional views of the 'Dark Ages'. There was also no invasion of bloodthirsty Anglo Saxons, rampaging across the countryside. With new archaeological evidence Francis discovers a far more interesting story.

But that relationship would develop into a romantic tragedy, whose effects would be more profound than anyone could have imagined. In his marriage to Kate Middleton, Prince William is entering into a new and independent stage of his life…a life in which his mothers influence and presence appear centre-stage and ever-present.. It is easy to forget that William’s formative years were not the idyll with the ’Princess of People’s Hearts’…rather they took place in the midst of a vicious divorce battle. William’s loyalties divided and fought over during the War of the Wales.

‘My Mother Diana’ is the story of Charles and Diana's marriage from a new and revealing point of view. It’s the story of how their marriage shaped William. It explores the effect of his mother’s relationships, the tell-all book she collaborated on with Andrew Morton, the effects of her Panorama interview and William's reaction to his father’s relationship with Camilla. On the surface William appears to be a product of the old order, groomed by the House of Windsor. But William is the son of Diana – who transcended celebrity and transformed the monarchy. This film seeks to understand William by exploring his relationship with his mother and examines where William was as key moments of her later life played out; because what she went through made him who he is today Why did William propose using his mother’s engagement ring? And what does it tell us about this future King and the legacy of his mother Diana? Fourteen years after her death Diana’s influence appears undiminished. But will William be the King Diana wished him to be?

  • The Search For The Romans First British Fort | Time Team | Timeline

    48:47

Excavations conducted by the Kent Archaeological Field School at Syndale, in Kent, have produced some interesting Roman finds. The most exciting was the discovery of what is thought to be an 'ankle-breaker ditch', a special military design that incorporates a trap at the bottom to perform the task it was named after. A day or two's march from where the Romans landed in 43 AD, and on the north-Kent route they would have taken on their way to the Thames, could this be the site of the first Roman fort in Britain, dating back to the Claudian invasion?

  • The Real Legacy Of The Roman Invasion In Britain | King Arthurs Britain | Timeline

    48:53

Francis Pryor examines the history of Britain near the end of the Roman occupation. The first instalment focuses on Britain under Roman rule, revealing a much greater degree of collaboration with the natives than was previously recognised.

Sheep-farming archaeologist, Francis Pryor, presents a historical series which explores Britain A.D, the British national character and the ultimate British icon King Arthur.

  • Why Are The Barbarians So Misunderstood? | An Age Of Light | Timeline

    59:39

The Dark Ages have been misunderstood. History has identified the period following the fall of the Roman Empire with a descent into barbarism – a terrible time when civilisation stopped. Waldemar Januszczak disagrees.

In this landmark 4-part series Waldemar argues that the Dark Ages were a time of great artistic achievement, with new ideas and religions provoking new artistic adventures. He embarks on a fascinating trip across Europe, Africa and Asia, visits the world’s most famous collections and discovers hidden artistic gems, all to prove that the Dark Ages were actually an ‘Age of Light'.
