  • Strong Floating Shelves - The Strongest Option

    14:33

First video on Strong Floating Shelves:

After experimenting with floating shelves for several years now, I've found ways to make them strong using lag bolts and wooden dowels. But the strongest option yet that I explore in this video uses 5/8 inch steel all thread rods as shelf supports for floating shelves. Wood works fine, but it doesn't really compare to the strength that you get with steel rods.

  • Easiest Floating Shelves with No Brackets // Woodworking Home Project DIY HowTo

    6:34

Hello and welcome to WoodShaped, my name is Adam Noe and I'm a woodworking in Kentucky. Today we show how to build floating shelves for your home.

The process was quite simple actually. Once we had selected the wood we wanted to use from our local hardwood specialty, we began to get the wood prepared. We decided to leave the wood unmilled as my wife wanted to keep the natural look of the wood and it really doesn't look much like the cedar you typically see that has been finished, not as dark and really gives the room a cool look.

I cut the wood at the miter saw to get it to length. These were cut just shy of the edge of the wall, about an eighth inch shorter. All were cut to the same length.

I then moved over to wall prep before drilling the holes in the wood. I measured on the wall and marked my drilling locations on the walls by ensuring level and this all turned out surprisingly accurate. Once i was happy with the setup, off camera, I drilled the holes partially with a drill bit off camera, I then took the 8 inch lag bolts and using my Milwaukee driver, drove them into the wall about 2.5 inches. I marked the depth with duct tape. Obviously the lag bolts have a head on them and that needed to be removed. I took my Milwaukee grinder and added a Lenox Metal Max Diamond edge disk:

    Dremel Options:
Dremel 420 Heavy Duty Cut-Off Wheels:
    Dremel 409 Cut-Off Wheels:

I had actually started with a hack saw but with 18 bolts I could not longer bear it and got the disk. At that point it took about 4 seconds per bolt and we were in business!

Once the wall was completely prepped, I drilled holes in the boards by first marking the center and ensuring the holes on the board matched those lag bolts on the wall, I then piloted the hole with my drill press to ensure straight holes. This step is not necessary if you don't have a drill press, just be careful that you are drilling straight into the wood by using a square. You don't want to drill out on one of the faces of the board. I repeated this process until all holes were drilled. 18 total holes, 3 per board.

Now came the fun part, lining up the holes with the boards and tapping the bolts into the shelves. This took a little matching up with the bolts and it didn't help that the walls were not actually flat, especially in the corner. I had to bend the bolts slightly to get the fit but this will turn out as an advantage since the friction will ensure the shelves stay in place easier. I'm sure I didn't drill all bolts in completely straight and mistakes will be made in the process, just do the best you can!

That was it! The shelves were done! The only step that was left was for my wife to decorate. i hope you enjoyed how these turned out. Please give a thumbs up and subscribe!! Thanks for watching!

  • Strong Floating Shelves

    6:06

I'm sure there are lots of ways, many different ways to build floating shelves. There are people on YouTube who come up with creative ways to do pretty much anything and I'm sure building floating shelves is no different. I haven't looked to see what other people have done partly because I've had an idea in my own mind as to how I would do it. But I never had the reason to put my idea to the test, until now. I'm finishing a project for a customer and the last thing to do is to build floating shelves.

I like the idea of doing away with shelf support brackets, but in my own mind I wondered, how do you make the shelves strong enough without the brackets to support a pretty good load. So my idea, which I'm sure is not new or particularly original, is to try to keep the weight down on all the pieces of the shelf but at same time try to give it as much strength to hold typical things that people put on shelves.

So the strength of the shelf is achieved through the way it's internal structure is attached to the wall. Ideally if you hit studs with screws or bolts you're way ahead of the game. If that's not possible then attaching with fasteners that clamp to the back of the sheet rock to hold the structure in place is the next best option. The shell that goes over the structure and provides your finished look for your floating shelf also needs to be as lightweight as possible. Because in doing that you allow more weight to be placed on the shelf and not create a problem with sagging.

So my idea is pretty simple and uses a 1 x 1.5 piece of pine lumber attached to the wall which has suspended off of it 1.5 x 1.5 x 8.25 inch shelf support pieces that are attached with a mortise and tennon type of glue joint. For this video I'm going to show a couple of different ways to attach these pieces and I think either one is plenty strong to do the job.

I had some questions in my own mind as I was doing this as to how strong this really would be and so I did a video last week that I have linked up in the corner that is dedicated completely to checking the strength of this set up. It compares the strength of the glue joints to the strength of sheet rock with toggle bolt types of fasteners and it at least concludes that this type of installation is plenty strong for typical home use floating shelves.

I have been surprised by how solid and versatile this type of installation can really be. I had the misconception that floating shelves were more of a gimmick and not particularly useful in normal use settings, but after working with my own design, I can see how these things can be incredibly strong with a little forethought and planning.

One way to make up this glue joint is to use a festool domino cutter which is by far the fastest way to go. But unless you're in the construction business you're likely not going to have one of these. An equally effective way is to use a dowel. In this case I'm using a 5/8 diameter dowel and drilling through the wall support and the shelf support pieces at the same time by clamping both of them in position. Then the goal is to drill in a straight line. And that part is not necessarily that important as long as the pieces stayed clamped down well while you're drilling.

Once your glue joints have set up, they are ready to install. In this case these are plaster walls so I used toggle bolt style fasteners to secure them to the wall. One of the benefits of installing the floating shelves in corners is that the support structure is significantly stronger just because it's mounted in the corner. However it also creates a challenge because corners are typically never perfectly square. So to get an accurate shape for these corner shelves, I build a template. This method can be used for not only this application but for building countertops or basically any situation where it is difficult to get an accurate shape because simply taking measurements with a tape don't pick up on subtle variations in angles that may be there.

These are strips of 1/8 inch Masonite that are cut to lengths that are needed to create the shape of the shelves. Then with a hot glue gun they are stuck in place. For the upper shelf, the template was really close to being what I needed. However the angle on the corner was just a little tight on the front. So rather than building another template, I just shaved off a little of the front edge and that worked out fine.

The structure of my shelves is pieces of quarter inch plywood that are wrapped with a 2 inch hardwood trim all the way around. In this case I'm using three-quarter inch alder and quarter inch alder plywood. I cut a quarter-inch deep by 3/8 inch wide joint in my hardwood edge that allows the plywood to be glued and nailed in place and then flushes out with the trim. I made my template so that it would be the size of the plywood pieces I needed to cut.

  • DIY Easy Cheap Plywood Floating Shelves

    10:56

At a time when wood has never been more expensive, plywood is a great material to make relatively easy and stylish floating shelves. I used baltic birch ply which has a lot of layers which adds to the attractive edge but you can use any plywood that you'd like. This project is DIY friendly and although I used a table saw and mitre saw, you could complete this whole project with just a circular saw. All of the furniture I've made for this bedroom is entirely made of plywood so stay tuned for more videos on how to make modern and affordable furniture.

  • Strong Floating Shelf Made With Dowels

    9:09

Another approach to mounting floating shelves uses dowels to secure the shelf frame to studs in the wall. The results are pretty surprising. 50 pound bags of concrete are added to the shelf to test how long it can hold up. The conclusion that is reached with all the strength tests that are done just show how surprisingly strong floating shelves can be. Depending on the purposes needed, different installation techniques can result in shelves that fill many purposes including being strong enough to hold heavier items.

  • DIY Seamless Rustic Floating Shelves

    7:40

Video process on how I create a set of seamless, rustic-style, floating shelves with perfect miter joints. They measure 32 inches in length, are about 3 inches high and come off the wall close to 10 inches. I used cabinet-grade 1/2 pine plywood for the large surface area and solid pine for the outside trim. MDF will also work if you're just going to paint it. Small scratches were applied to the surface with a light sanding from 40 grit sandpaper for a more industrial-style appearance. I wanted a seamless look so I used perfect miter joints on the outside to hide the end-grain you would usually find using a butt joints. At the end I show a 25lb. weight being put near the back to show shear force. I don't think it would hold near the front which would be double the weight on the hanging point. Plus it's WAY more than what is needed for a few picture frames and trinkets but I like to test the limits anyways. Enjoy and Subscribe, project videos posted weekly!

  • DIY All Plywood Floating Shelves with NO BRACKETS // Woodworking with Kreg ACS

    10:39

Today on Modern Builds I'm going to show you how to build clean, modern floating shelves completely from 3/4 plywood. No specialty hardware or brackets necessary. I wanted to test the Kreg ACS on this project because it incorporates a TON of 45 degree bevel cuts that all need to line up for the 'continuous grain' look I've been experimenting with. Of course everything I did can be cut with a circular saw and straight edge, but I wanted to give the ACS a shot at this and it worked great! I'll be uploading free plans tomorrow as soon as they're finished. Links for everything I used are below.

  • How to make ULTRA thin floating night stands

    6:00

I've made a pair of floating nightstands from an IKEA bamboo cutting boards. I was intended to achieve a minimalist shelve, without legs, lightweight. This is a really easy weekend project that you can do with a table saw and a router. I'm aware this is not able to hold lots of weigh but it's perfecty functional to hold about 2kg without flexing. I hope you like it. If you do, like and share.

  • How to Make & Install Floating Shelves the REAL Way | DIY

    14:05

There's a ton of fake news out there about how to install floating shelves and this video is going to clear some of that up.

There's people that install brackets onto the sheetrock (WRONG)❌
There's people that build out wooden framing encased in plywood (HARD)❌
Then there's people that install them directly onto the studs (CORRECT!)✅
We'll do that last one and I'll show you just how quick and easy it is.

Sheetrock is soft. If you install brackets directly on to the sheetrock - even if you hit a stud - you're going to get a wobbly shelf and it's only a matter of time.

Additionally, you need welded brackets. These aren't industrial strength but will hold your typically house hold items so these are the ones I went with.
