  • How Long The COVID-19 Coronavirus Lasts On Everyday Surfaces

The Coronavirus is spreading rapidly around the world. According to the CDC, the virus is spread primarily through person-to-person contact. But experts say touching contaminated surfaces can still pose a risk. If someone coughs or sneezes on their hand and then touches a doorknob or a faucet the virus could survive for up to 72 hours, according to the study. It's important to wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Avoid touching your face and use disinfecting wipes to clean frequently used surfaces like doorknobs and your phone.

  • What Happens To Your Lungs When You Wear A Face Mask Every Day?

There are plenty of reasons why most of us would opt out of wearing a face mask if we could. Masks can pick up and accumulate sweat, makeup, pollen, and whatever particles might happen to float by. Depending on the materials your mask is made of, wearing a mask could trigger allergies, itchiness, and possibly even maskne, yep, that's mask-induced acne.

When you wear masks long enough, the backs of your ears begin to get tender and irritated, and unless you wear an extender, having a loose mask on may only be slightly better than having no mask at all. And let's not even talk about what happens in the summer, when the heat and humidity begin to make mask-wearing a real challenge.

But all the inconveniences of wearing masks would be trivial if we found out that wearing a mask could actually hurt our lungs in the long run. And despite all the memes and spurious medical claims we've seen being made left and right on social media lately, we're still left wondering, do they really?

Claims that mask wearing was detrimental to a person's lungs in particular, and possibly their health in general, began circulating in the spring of 2020, around the time the CDC recommended the use of face masks to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Internet fact-checking site Snopes appears to have had its hands full trying to debunk various theories about what happens to your lungs if you wear masks for too long. Some theories being circulated include the belief that wearing a face mask could trigger hypercapnia, also known as carbon dioxide poisoning, which would theoretically lead to a whole host of other harmful symptoms if true. But fortunately, that's not really how carbon dioxide works in this situation.

In a blog post for Forbes, childhood cancer researcher Victoria Forster dismissed the idea that wearing a cloth mask can cause you to OD on carbon dioxide, quote, because carbon dioxide molecules are simply too small to be controlled by the majority of mask materials and simply pass right through. She wrote,

Take surgeons, for example, during long procedures, they wear surgical masks for hours with no ill-effects on their carbon dioxide levels. Having a surgeon with an altered mental state would not be in the best interests of either the patient or the surgeon and thankfully, this simply does not happen.

Despite what users on social media claim, wearing a mask every day will not reduce our oxygen intake to levels so critical our tissues are deprived, a condition known as hypoxia. Masks also do not cause hypoxemia, a condition characterized by low oxygen supplies to the arteries, according to Dr. Daniel Díaz from the prestigious National Autonomous University of Mexico medical school. According to Dr. Diaz,

This misinformation may arise from the feeling of lack of air due to mechanical obstruction depending on the type of mouthpiece we are using. But the feeling of obstruction is because we are not used to using the mouth mask. But, as such, it will not cause us any kind of hypoxia.

The CDC's guidelines have always been clear on why people should wear face masks. They have been equally clear about who shouldn't wear face masks, and these include children under 2 years of age and persons who might have trouble breathing. The CDC is also clear about avoiding the use of respirators like N-95 masks, which are only for the use of medical personnel. And in case you think you can be excused from wearing a face mask because you have asthma or COPD, Mount Sinai Hospital professor of medicine Neil Schachter says,

I definitely recommend using a face mask for everyone in these times, especially for people with asthma and COPD. We need to protect those at risk, in particular those with fragile airways.

That said, you should always consult your doctor if you're concerned about the effects of mask-wearing on your lung or heart health.

So, what happens to your lungs if you wear a face mask every day? Just about every licensed health care professional out there says absolutely nothing. And they should know, because, particularly in times like these, doctors and nurses on the front lines are called upon to wear face masks for hours, days, and weeks at a stretch. Watch the video to find out What Happens To Your Lungs When You Wear A Face Mask Every Day!

A doctor explains the different ways that the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 pandemic might come to an end. Plus some banging tunes.

YES YES OK I MEANT MARCH 5th NOT MAY. Dammit Jim I'm a doctor not a spelling bee champion. I mean I'm Indian, just not THAT Indian.

This is the first of a few planned videos on COVID-19, time permitting. Plans so far are:
    - A cheeky movie with a bottle of Corona (this weekend I hope!)
    - A closer look at coronavirus and the heart + what happens in the ICU
    - Considering how a pandemic might look from my point of view as a hospital doctor.

  • Coronavirus and warm weather: Explaining the potential impact of seasonality

President Trump has repeatedly suggested warm weather could slow the spread of the novel coronavirus. It appears he is referencing seasonality, which describes how active a virus is depending on the climate. In other words, the idea that people get sick more often in the winter.

Health experts say that for this strain of the coronavirus, which continues to spread across the globe, it’s too early to know if seasonality will have an impact. There are still too many unknowns to predict what will happen to the virus in warmer months.

Even if the novel coronavirus does dissipate in the currently impacted areas, it may find new life in the tropics and southern hemisphere. And that migration between hemispheres can actually prolong the lifespan of the disease. Experts say this means the virus could exist year round. How slow will the Coronavirus spread in the summer? Chinese experts made a big claim
گرمیوں میں کورونا وائرس کے پھیلنے کی رفتار کتنی کم ہوجائے گی؟ چینی ماہرین نے بڑا دعویٰ کردیا

Warmer Weather May Slow, but Not Halt, Coronavirus

Nature may help diminish the pandemic if aggressive measures to control the spread of infections continue, experts say. That doesn’t mean the virus won’t return.

Communities living in warmer places appear to have a comparative advantage to slow the transmission of coronavirus infections, according to an early analysis by scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The researchers found that most coronavirus transmissions had occurred in regions with low temperatures, between 37.4 and 62.6 degrees Fahrenheit (or 3 and 17 degrees Celsius).

While countries with equatorial climates and those in the Southern Hemisphere, currently in the middle of summer, have reported coronavirus cases, regions with average temperatures above 64.4 degrees Fahrenheit (or 18 degrees Celsius) account for fewer than 6 percent of global cases so far.

“Wherever the temperatures were colder, the number of the cases started increasing quickly,” said Qasim Bukhari, a computational scientist at M.I.T. who is a co-author of the study. “You see this in Europe, even though the health care there is among the world’s best.”

The temperature dependency is also clear within the United States, Dr. Bukhari said. Southern states, like Arizona, Florida and Texas, have seen slower outbreak growth compared with states like Washington, New York and Colorado. Coronavirus cases in California have grown at a rate that falls somewhere in between.

The seasonal pattern is similar to what epidemiologists have observed with other viruses. Dr. Deborah Birx, the global AIDS coordinator in the United States and also a member of the Trump administration’s coronavirus task force, said during a recent briefing that the flu, in the Northern Hemisphere, generally follows a November to April trend.

  • USA: Just stay calm. It will go away - Trump on coronavirus

    Subscribe to our channel!

US President Donald Trump told people to just stay calm saying the coronavirus outbreak would go away as he compared it to the death toll from the influenza virus during remarks at the Capitol in Washington DC on Tuesday.

And we're prepared, and we're doing a great job with it. And it will go away. Just stay calm. It will go away, he said.

As you know, it's about 600 cases, it's about 26 deaths, within our country, Trump said, citing numbers from Monday.

If you look at the flu, for this year we're looking at 8,000 deaths. And, you know, hundreds of thousands of cases, but we have 8,000 deaths. So you have 8,000 versus 26 deaths, at this time, he added.

Experts have cautioned against comparisons between the two diseases as the coronavirus, which has no treatment yet, is estimated to be nearly twice as contagious and more than 20 times deadlier.

Trump also said it's not a big deal to get tested, after having been in contact with several Republican lawmakers who have been exposed to the virus and are currently self-quarantined, but that the White House doctor sees no reason to do it due to his lack of symptoms.

By Tuesday night, confirmed cases of the COVID-19 disease passed 1,000 in the US, with hundreds of new cases reported in the last 24 hours. Worldwide, the disease has infected over 119,000 people and killed more than 4,200 as of Wednesday morning.
