    We are entering a new era in research. The synergy of technological advancement and scientific discovery enables a new approach to solving the universe's greatest mysteries. Through the world of particle physics, we see the great machines and the global collaborations working together in a unified quest. A diversity of people, a diversity of machines.

    Theoretically, in a Universe where the density of matter is high, clusters of galaxies would continue to grow and so, on average, should contain more mass now than in the past.

    Most astronomers believe that we live in a low-density Universe in which a mysterious substance known as ‘dark energy’ accounts for 70% of its content, and therefore, pervades everything.

    For life in the universe to be abundant, planets must be abundant. But planets are hard to detect because they are small, and much fainter than the stars they orbit.

    How does life begin?
    Scientists do not yet know how the first living things arose on Earth. The geological record shows that life appeared on Earth almost as soon as the young planet was cool and stable enough for living things to survive. This suggests that life may exist wherever conditions allow it.

    When NASA began 60 years ago, we had questions about the universe humans had been asking since we first looked up into the night sky. In the six decades since, NASA, along with its international partners and thousands of researchers, have expanded our knowledge of the Universe by using a full fleet of telescopes and satellites. From the early probes of the 1950s and 1960s to the great telescopes of the 1990s and 21st century, NASA scientists have been exploring the evolution of the universe from the Big Bang to the present.

    The Great Observatories
    NASA astronomers use several kinds of telescopes in space and on the ground. Each observes targets like stars, planets, and galaxies, but captures different wavelengths of light using various techniques to add to our understanding of these cosmic phenomenon.
    Dark Matter
    NASA telescopes have helped us better understand this mysterious, invisible matter that is five times the mass of regular matter. The first direct detection of dark matter was made in 2007 through observations of the Bullet Cluster of galaxies by the Chandra x-ray telescope.

    Black Holes
    Although we can’t “see” black holes, scientists have been able to study them by observing how they interact with the environment around them with telescopes like Swift, Chandra, and Hubble. In 2017, NASA's Swift telescope has mapped the death spiral of a star as it is consumed by a black hole. This year, astronomers using Chandra have discovered evidence for thousands of black holes located near the center of our Milky Way galaxy.
    Galaxies
    A galaxy is a huge collection of gas, dust, and billions of stars and their solar systems, held together by gravity. Some are spiral-shaped like our Milky Way Galaxy; others are smooth and oval shaped. NASA telescopes are helping us learn about how galaxies formed and evolved over time.
    Exoplanets
    Just 30 years ago, scientists didn’t know if there were planets orbiting other stars besides our own Sun. Now, scientists believe every star likely has at least one exoplanet. They come in a wide variety of sizes, from gas giants larger than Jupiter to small, rocky planets about as big as Earth or Mars. They can be hot enough to boil metal or locked in deep freeze. They can orbit their stars so tightly that a “year” lasts only a few days; they can even orbit two stars at once. Some exoplanets don’t orbit around a star, but wander through the galaxy in permanent darkness. NASA’s Kepler spacecraft and newly-launched Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite are helping us find more distant worlds

    Thanks to the wonders of physics, astronomers can map a timeline of the universe’s history. Today, Phil’s going to give you an overview of those first few minutes (yes, MINUTES) of the universe’s life. It started with a Big Bang, when the Universe was incredibly dense and hot. It expanded and cooled, going through multiple stages where different kinds of matter could form. It underwent a phenomenally rapid expansion called inflation, which smoothed out much of the lumpiness in the matter. Normal matter formed atoms between 3 and 20 minutes after the bang, and the lumps left over from inflation formed the galaxies and larger structures we see today.

  • A Tribute to Kepler: Past, Present and Future of the Search for Exoplanets

    Kepler was NASA’s first mission dedicated to the search for planets around other stars, called exoplanets. The first exoplanet was discovered just 20 years prior to launch, and only a few hundred more were discovered in that time, with most of them inhabitable and more similar to gas giants like Jupiter than Earth. In the nearly ten years since Kepler’s launch, data from the spacecraft has resulted in the detection of thousands of exoplanets, with a multitude of them the size of Earth or smaller, and many of them at the right distance from their star to possibly support life. Thanks to data from Kepler, we now have greater understanding of two terms of the Drake Equation that had eluded us for fifty-seven years --- we now know there are even more planets than stars in our galaxy and that a significant number of them could have the right conditions to be habitable.

    Thanks to Kepler, we know that Earth is not alone. The odds of humanity not being alone in the cosmos seem high. But there are still a lot of big terms in that simple little Drake Equation to figure out. The search will continue with new space telescopes like TESS (Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite), and future generation of large space telescopes like JWST (James Webb Space Telescope).

    We invited Natalie Batalha, Professor at U.C. Santa Cruz, and Doug Caldwell, Senior Research Scientist at the SETI Institute to discuss the state of the search for exoplanets. What did we learn from the Kepler mission? What are the most exotic planetary systems discovered so far? What are the chances of finding extraterrestrial life in the next decade using new telescopes? These are the questions that will be addressed during our special SETI Talk on the end of the Kepler spacecraft on November 13 at 7pm at SRI International, Menlo Park, CA.     Five rocky alien worlds that are 80 percent as old as the universe itself have been discovered, suggesting that Earth-size planets have been a feature of the Milky Way galaxy almost since its beginning.

    The newfound exoplanets circle Kepler-444, an 11.2-billion-year-old star about 25 percent smaller than the sun that lies 117 light-years from Earth. All of the worlds are Venus-size or smaller and are therefore rocky, though scientists know nothing else about their composition.

    All five alien planets complete an orbit in less than 10 days, meaning they're almost certainly too hot to support life as we know it. But Kepler-444 hints at the existence of other ancient planetary systems that may be more hospitable, researchers said. [10 Exoplanets That Could Host Alien Life

    We now know that Earth-sized planets have formed throughout most of the universe’s 13.8-billion-year history, which could provide scope for the existence of ancient life in the galaxy, lead study author Tiago Campante, of the University of Birmingham in England, said in a statement.

    For perspective, Earth and everything else in our own solar system formed about 4.6 billion years ago.

    Campante and his colleagues discovered Kepler-444 and its five known planets after analyzing data gathered by NASA's Kepler space telescope. Kepler hunts for planets by noting the tiny brightness dips caused when they cross their host star's face from the spacecraft's perspective.

    Kepler can also pick up brightness changes caused by sound waves within the star that affect its temperature and thus its luminosity. Studying these natural oscillations — a strategy known as asteroseismology — can help scientists determine a star's size, mass and age.

    When asteroseismology emerged about two decades ago, we could only use it on the sun and a few bright stars, but thanks to Kepler, we can now apply the technique to literally thousands of stars, said co-author Daniel Huber, of the University of Sydney in Australia.

    Asteroseismology allows us to precisely measure the radius of Kepler-444 and hence the sizes of its planets, he added. For the smallest planet in the Kepler-444 system, which is slightly larger than Mercury, we measured its size with an uncertainty of only 100 kilometers

A tiny speck where our three-dimensional universe, space, was buried. But where was this speck, this dot? There is no answer comprehensible for average human imagination. Only mathematics helps here. And it states: this three-dimensional, strongly curved speck was just there.

    After the big bang, our universe ballooned. And continues to expand today, maybe for all eternity. Nevertheless, astronomers define the universe as manageable: it is as big as the eye can see. It consists of what we can observe in principle. In order to discover and observe galaxies and stars, we need to light. The light of our central star, our sun, takes 8 minutes to reach us. The light of the nearest stars a few years. Tens of thousands of years from the next galaxies. The Hubble Space Telescope photographs galaxies several billion light-years away, and satellites measure the microwave radiation produced only 400,000 years after the Big Bang. With this data, cosmologists measure our universe in space and time.

    Kepler is a space observatory launched by NASA to uncover Earth-like planets orbiting other celebrities. The spacecraft, named after the German Renaissance astronomer Johannes Kepler, was released on March 7, 2009.

    Created to survey a portion of our region of the Milky Way to discover lots of Earth-size extrasolar worlds in or near the habitable zone and estimate the number of of the billions of superstars in our galaxy have such earths, Kepler's single tool is a photometer that continuously keeps an eye on the brightness of over 145,000 primary sequence superstars in a set field of vision. This data is sent to Planet, after that assessed to detect regular dimming dued to extrasolar earths that cross before their host star.

    Kepler is part of NASA's Discovery Program of fairly low-priced, focused main science missions.     BIG CRUNCH THEORY
    The Big Crunch theorises that gravity will pull the universe back into itself in a way similar to the air being let out of an inflated balloon, and that the end of the universe will be a big fireball as all that matter collapses onto itself.

    The universe has its own momentum, its own energy, and it is moving outward. But in the Big Crunch Theory there will be a point where the universe will stop its outward movement and collapse under the force of its own gravity. In this scenario, the universe returns to its original state just before the Big Bang, setting the stage for a perpetual seesaw of creation and destruction.

    Cosmologists have calculated that there is some form of energy that keeps the universe from collapsing, and may prevent the Big Crunch from happening. The existence of such a force leads to new theories about what the universe is made of and how it might end.

    BIG CHILL THEORY
    The Big Chill Theory hypothesises that the universe will expand until the nuclear furnaces that power all the stars burn out, and the universe grows cold and dies. The universe continues to expand forever and grows into an increasingly cold and lonely place as the expansion removes our nearest neighbours from us and we end up a single isolated community.

    In the Big Chill scenario, Earth becomes a lonely cold planet as the universe expands. Distances between stars grow so vast that they nearly disappear from view, burning out over time and, eventually, the entire universe ends in a frozen state.

    According to the Big Chill Theory, from Earth’s perspective the first thing to go is sunlight. The sun dims as it exhausts its last bits of nuclear fuel. Earth freezes and becomes lifeless. And billions of years after humans are gone, the cosmos expands out of view. A few newer stars remain, but most have long moved away. The furnace powering the universe burns out. The darkened universe continues to expand. A frozen and lifeless remnant of its once vibrant existence.

    BIG RIP THEORY
    Einstein believed that there is more mass in the universe than we can actually see, claiming that there are patches of invisible supergravity from which not even light can escape. The forces outlined in this prediction might just be responsible for a crushing end of the cosmos.

    When certain stars run out of fuel they collapse in on themselves into a smaller and far denser mass that attracts more and more matter, just like the Big Crunch. The gravitational pull of these “black holes” is so powerful that anything that falls near them will be forever trapped – not even light can escape.

    Clearer pictures of the universe that have only been possible in recent years have led many cosmologists to conclude that not only is the universe expanding, it is speeding up. This suggests that there is an invisible force that exists in the universe – named Dark Energy – that is working against gravity, and could eventually lead to the end of the universe.

    The battle between dark matter, the force that holds the universe together, and dark energy, the force seeking to tear it apart, has set the universe on a path of destruction. If dark energy rules the cosmos, the universe could rip to shreds atom-by-atom.

    If the universe is continually accelerating, the Big Rip Theory proposes, then 50 billion years from now the universe will tear itself apart. All the distant stars and galaxies will be pulled away from each other. Stars are ripped apart, planets are ripped apart, and even atoms are torn apart before the universe ends.

    One day we may face no choice but to leave Earth, forced by an ice age, pollution or a meteorite to find a new home elsewhere in the galaxy. The difficulties are daunting, humans evolved to live on Earth, not in space. We meet the scientists who are making journeys to Mars and beyond possible.

    The first task is finding the right planet; humans need oxygen and water, so not any old earth will do. We meet David Miller, the MIT scientist who works on the Terrestrial Planet Finder project and thinks it will make the job of finding a new home a whole lot easier. The ‘TPF’ is a set of orbiting satellites which can spot Earth-like planets and reveal whether they have a ‘human-friendly’ atmosphere.

    Once we’ve found a target, there’s the small matter of getting there. Just traveling to Mars and back is likely to take years. Journeys to stars are likely to be decades if not centuries. We look at some of the concepts to come out of NASA’s propulsion labs, from solar sails to antimatter.

    But even the rocket scientists can’t make our ship break the speed of light; we have to accept that crews are going to have to be in this for the long haul. We meet scientists who are trying to ensure that they arrive at their destinations healthy and ready to start life on a new planet.

    At MIT, we see centrifuges that mimic the effects of gravity, installed in a spaceship they might stop the crippling loss of muscle and bone mass that would threaten our astronauts. Dava Newman demonstrates her revolutionary design for a spacesuit on a climbing wall, made of the flexible material it will work with the wearer unlike the bulky suits currently used. We also reveal the work being done to overcome the deadly effects of cosmic radiation that threatens to wreck our crew’s DNA.

    We also look at the work being done to keep our crew in sound mind. Sealed in a ship for years with only faint communications with Earth they may rely on the software being designed by David Dinges, which allows a computer to spot when humans are becoming stressed.

    Eventually, though we may have to accept that more drastic changes are needed before we can leave for the stars. From hibernation pods to methods to slow down aging, the world of science fiction may have to become fact before we can go our solar system. And if we embrace genetic manipulation to redesign ourselves for space, we may also have to change our ideas of what a human is.
