  • Capitaine - A fly fishing exploratory into wild Cameroon

    12:19

    Synopsis:
Imagine a fish so big that some call it the elephant of the river. Imagine it inhabited the waters of 1/4 of the African continent in vast numbers. Now imagine, that largely unseen to the developed world, a wave of humanity has reduced all the rivers and surrounding landscapes to skeletal remains.

But, right in the middle of it all, there’s a wilderness that has beaten the odds, a haven that is a window into the past of how all of Western Africa’s savannas once were. Journey with a group of fly fishermen to this very special oasis to witness an explosion of life, where the end-goal is to help protect it all through fly fishing tourism.

A story by Johann Vorster (Vossie)

  • 10 Deadliest River Monsters Of The Amazon

    10:01

10 Deadliest River Monsters Of The Amazon

The Amazon rainforest... an immense ecosystem, a habitat for creatures as weird and wonderful as the jaguar, the poison dart frog and the Jesus lizard. But it’s home to more than just the animals that prowl, swing, and slither through the trees.

In the depths of the Amazon River, the largest river in the world, live creatures so amazing and so terrifying, that they make Jaws look like a nice, relaxing swim in the ocean. Here are ten of the deadliest river monsters of the Amazon!

    10) Black Caiman

The black caiman is a crocodile on steroids! This reptile can grow up to 20 feet long, and has a bigger and heavier skulls than the crocs in the Nile. They are the apex predators in these waters. This basically means they are the kings of the river and eat anything that can fit between their jaws, including monkeys, piranhas, deer, perch and surprisingly the anaconda!
Oh and not forgetting humans too. Ten years ago, a biologist named Deise Nishimura was attacked by one of them while cleaning some fish in her house boat. While she was able to fight it off, the animal took one of her legs. Later on they discovered the caiman had been living under her house boat for eight months just waiting for the right opportunity to strike. What a beast!
    09) Pacu

One animal certain to be far more terrifying to men than to women, the pacu is a much larger relative of the piranha, known for its distinctive, human-like teeth. Unlike most of the creatures on this list, the pacu is actually omnivorous, and a good part of its diet is comprised of fruit and nuts. Unfortunately for some pacu, “nuts” may not only mean things that drop from trees. Yes, that’s right: Pacu are alleged to have occasionally bitten off the testicles of male swimmers, with reports of men in Papua New Guinea being killed by pacu after the fish apparently mistook their genitalia for an easy snack. Oh, and don’t worry if you can’t make it to the Amazon to see these manhood-masticating monsters, because they’re already spreading into Europe. Yikes!

    8) Arapaima

    from 4:45
Also known as paiche or pirarucu, the Arapima is a giant carnivorous fish that thrives in the Amazon river and other surrounding lakes. They look as though they are encased in armoured scales and live like the piranha although they don’t co-exist together. They are expert predators who feed on fish, and occasionally birds. And, once in a while humans. They won’t resist taking a bite off the leg of any human who ventures into their territory. They live close to the water surface; so you better not stick your hand out into the water on a boat ride. They breathe surface air and while they are at it they will make a distinctive cough sound as they gasp for air. They grow up to 3 metres long and weigh 200 lbs. These creatures are so vicious their tongues even have teeth

    7) Giant Otter

Heading up the “exactly what it says on the tin” category are the giant otters, who, as their name suggests, are very large otters. They are the longest examples of the weasel family, with adult males reaching up to two meters that’s over six feet from head to tail. Their diet primarily consists of fish and crabs, which they hunt in family groups of three to eight members, and they can eat up to four kilograms that’s nine pounds of seafood a day.

Egypt is a vast desert; a searing sun beating down; inhospitable to man and beast. Rain almost never fell. But once a year the river magically surged with water, and with this annual flood, thousands of crocodiles washed into the lives of the ancient Egyptians. Death by crocodile was common. Richards goal is to catch a glimpse of this legendary creature in the wild and along the way come to know the powerful god he inspired thousands of years ago. From Alexandria to Cairo, from the Great Pyramids at Giza, to the Valley of the Kings, Richard explores the way the Nile and its fearsome Lord molded a society. Further upstream still, Richard visits a temple dedicated to Sobek, the Crocodile God, and seeks the beast himself in the waters of Lake Nasser. As time and technology changed, the Lord of the Nile slowly disappeared. Hunting, pollution and the Aswan dam robbed the river of its ancient consort. Today there are reports that crocodiles are making a miraculous return in the south of Egypt. Richards goal is to catch a glimpse of this legendary creature in the wild and along the way come to know the powerful god he inspired thousands of years ago.

10 River Monsters Caught in the Amazon

The Amazon River is a supreme monster in itself, as it's the largest river in the Americas, only second to the Nile in the entire world. In fact, it is the largest river by discharge volume of water on Earth. It is equivalent to the sum of the next seven largest rivers, together, when it comes to the volume of flowing freshwater.

The Amazon is so huge that it runs across Brazil, Colombia, and Peru. Additionally, it has some really deep spots, with up to 330 feet.

This impressive giant is a major life source for zillions of creatures that thrive in the largest South American Rainforests. Inside and around the Amazon, live some of the most dominating predators in the world, ruling a magical place where's difficult to discern reality from myth.

If you've been there, you know how stunning it can be the experience. It's impossible to absorb it completely with all the senses. The sounds of the river and its surroundings stack with thousands of creatures buzzing and howling, the water flowing and splashing, adding to the occasional refreshing breeze. Light and darkness are present at all times, as the Amazon can be one of the hottest places in the world, with trees higher than most buildings, and murky waters so dense, they can hide monstrous giants. The colors you can find in the Amazon are exceptional, brushed across unique flowers, frogs, insects, and birds. Finally, the scent of the Amazon is unforgettable. It's like you can inspire the purest air, taking inside you a blessing in disguise.

The most fascinating thing about the Amazon River is the ferocious wildlife that prospers inside and around it. Since Francisco de Orellana named the Amazon River, it was a dangerous place, fiercely protected by the Natives. After barely surviving an ambush, the legendary explorer named the river after a tribe of warriors led by women in greek mythology, just as the Natives who attacked him and his crew.

Today, there are still dangerous outlaws hiding inside the dense rainforest that surrounds the Amazon River, but the territory is under Nature's command, despite centuries of human abuse.

The bravest adventurers and ecologists have dived inside the tight jungle to catch some of the most exciting creatures in the world. Many of these animals have proved to be dangerous for humans. But, we are much more dangerous for them. Because of poaching, mining, and deforestation, many of these legendary creatures are currently endangered.

Today, we are going to show you 10 River Monsters that have been caught in the Amazon.

Come with us, if you dare!

    Number 10. Freshwater Stingray

There isn't a safe place around the Amazon River. Even the shores, with low-depth waters, hide beasts, such as the Freshwater Stingray.

The Freshwater Stingray is not a man-eating demon, but it's by far the most dangerous for humans in our list.

They cause more than a couple of thousands of injuries per year, only in Colombia. This stingray isn't aggressive but it's geared up to defend itself. It's almost impossible to see until it’s too late, because of its near-perfect camouflage. Well, it has to be excellent if you want to remain undetected measuring up to 6.6 feet! The bad thing about such a good camouflage is that a few medium-sized creatures, like humans, can step on you accidentally, triggering your venomous tail stinger unnecessarily. Unfortunately for humans, even if the tail stinger misses you, the upper surface can still hurt us, as their covered with sharp tooth-like scales.

    Number 9. Electric eel

The electric eels are one of the most fascinating freshwater predators. They use electricity like no other creature on the Amazon or even the entire Animal Kingdom.

Adult ones are equipped with thousands of stacked electroplaques that can make a shock up to 860 volts and up to 1 ampere of current. Needless to say, the strongest shocks are dangerous for any animal, including humans. However, these creatures aren't eager to taste human flesh, as they tend to eat smaller fish only. Most humans are accidentally attacked by electric eels. Curiously enough electric eels aren't exactly eels but a type of knife fish.

Electric eels use electricity to detect prey and stun them. They use high voltage bursts to locate prey, causing them to twitch involuntarily. Then, this electric hunter sends a string of high voltage pulses at up to 400 per second to attack their target. Just like a taser!

    Number 8. Payara

The Vampire fish or Payara is one of the fiercest and most scary Amazon River monsters.
