Most Mysterious Discoveries Made in Antarctica!
For centuries, Antarctica has captured our imagination. From the historic first explorers of the 1800s to the bold scientists of today, we continue to be captivated by the wonders held within Antarctica's icy plains.

As the world's last unexplored wilderness, Antarctica is shrouded in mystery, and as a land of extremes, it's also great at keeping its secrets.

The harsh conditions, freezing temperatures, and barren landscapes make Antarctica inhospitable to humans. The frozen continent is about one and a half times the size of the United States and 99 percent is covered in ice, making up 90 percent of all the ice on Earth.

Despite this, scientists have forged on, discovering blood-red waterfalls, ancient fossils, peculiar natural phenomenons, and incredible creatures. With that being said, let’s take a look at 10 of the most mysterious discoveries made in Antarctica!!

    10. Underground lakes

It’s difficult to imagine anything beneath the thick layers of ice in Antarctica, yet scientists have discovered a number of underground lakes.

First uncovered in 1970 with radars, there are estimated to be around 400 lakes sitting under 3 kilometers of ice, in the regions that were explored.

Scientists believe the lakes were formed after the separation of Antarctica from Gondwanaland, the ancient supercontinent. The lakes don't freeze because of the pressure from the weight of the ice sheet.

Lake Vostok, discovered in the 1990s by Russian scientists, is the largest subglacial lake in Antarctica. It’s also the third-largest lake by volume in the world, lying 3.5 kilometers below the ice.

Scientists have since drilled deep holes into the ice to extract a sample of the lake water and one sample showed the water to be around -3ºC, despite being covered by ice over 20 million years ago.

In 2014, scientists had a major breakthrough at Lake Whillans, discovering a diverse and active eco-system of microorganisms in the lake, nearly a kilometer under the ice sheet.

These incredible species haven’t seen fresh air or sunlight for millions of years, yet they flourish, using methane and ammonium as energy to grow.

    9. Deep Lake

Deep Lake is an inland lake in East Antarctica that has fascinated scientists for years. The lake sits 55 meters below sea level, with water salinity increasing as it gets deeper.

Its salty waters are comparable to the Dead Sea and are ten times saltier than the ocean. This means the water does not freeze, despite temperatures reaching -20ºC at its deepest point.

The lake is practically inhabitable, with one of the least productive, yet most remarkable ecosystems in the world. Scientists have found four microbe species living in the waters, although it’s dangerous for most other animals.

Some penguins have been spotted swimming the waters, but they can easily die as the lake is much colder than the ocean.

    8. Blood Falls

In the McMurdo Dry Valley, a bright crimson, five-storey waterfall pours out of Taylor Glacier into Lake Bonney. It looks like a gush of blood from a wound in the ice, but scientists have recently discovered the cause behind this mysterious phenomenon.

The water that feeds Blood Falls was once a salty lake that is now cut off from the atmosphere due to the formation of glaciers on top of the lake.

The water is preserved 400 meters underground and has become even saltier over time - it’s now three times saltier than seawater and cannot freeze.

The saltwater is also extremely rich in iron and completely devoid of oxygen and sunlight. As the iron-rich water seeps through a fissure in the glacier and comes into contact with the air, the iron oxidizes and rusts, staining the water a dark red color.

This eerie sight is only accessible by helicopter or cruise ships visiting the Ross Sea.

    7. Unusual creatures

Antarctica is a barren, icy desert with very little rain, fierce winds, and the coldest temperatures on earth—the coldest recorded temperature was -89.4°C—yet it’s also home to a myriad of unique wildlife.

It was previously thought that nothing could survive beneath the massive ice sheets, however, scientists have discovered a number of unusual species that have adapted to the harsh environment.

  • Frozen Treasures Found In The Depths Of Antarctica

    11:24

As far as mysterious places go, Antarctica has a lot going for it, including a ton of frozen treasures and fascinating surprises just waiting to be discovered. Here are some of the craziest frozen treasures found in Antarctica.

Antarctica is a remote enough chunk of the Earth as it is, but the speckle of tiny Antarctic islands surrounding the continent is ridiculously remote. Some of these islands are almost impossible to get a plane to fly over, let alone land on. One of these remote islands is Saunders Island, situated around 1,000 miles off the eastern edge of Antarctica's coastline, and researchers analyzing high-resolution South Pole satellite imagery spotted something unusual about Mount Michael, the largest mountain on Saunders Island.

Usually, the mountain is covered in a dense blanket of cloud. However, very occasionally, the skies clear over Saunders Island. On one of those rare days, satellite imagery revealed an unexpected glowing orange patch at the mountain's peak.

Yes, it's a huge lake of bubbling lava. As far as we know, only seven other similar lava lakes exist on Earth. Not surprisingly, geologists are keen to learn more about this odd mountain at the end of the world, but it'll likely be several years before a surveillance aircraft can get there to take a closer look.

  • 10 Most Incredible Discoveries Made In Antarctica

    11:33

From treasures from outer space to a possible lost civilization, here are the 10 most incredible things found in Antarctica.

    Subscribe to American Eye

    10: Underground Lakes
While it may be difficult to imagine there being anything hidden beneath the layers of ice in Antarctica, there are actually many underground lakes. The first were uncovered in 1970 using radar. There are an estimated 400 lakes sitting quietly beneath 3 kilometers of solid ice. Scientists believe the lakes were formed when Antarctica separated from the ancient supercontinent known as Gondwanaland.

    9: Blood Falls
Blood falls is probably the most notorious discovery in Antarctica. This waterfall looks like thick and viscous blood flowing down ice walls. It is located in the McMurdo Dry Valley, and the waterfall is five stories tall and bleeding bright crimson. The blood-like substance flows out of the Taylor Glacier and into Lake Bonney.

    8: Lots of Strange Animals
Antarctica is definitely a pretty barren landscape. It is more of an icy desert than a continent, getting very little rain every year, unending storm of fierce wind, and the very coldest temperatures on earth. In fact, the coldest temperature ever recorded was -89.4 degrees Celsius in Antarctica.

    7: Ancient Fossils
It is important to remember that Antarctica has been around for millions of years, and it was not always a frozen desert. Before the Ice Age layered the entire earth in Frozen hunks of ice, Antarctica was actually part of a very warm region where rainforests grew, and possibly even ancient civilizations of intelligent, human-Like creatures thrived.

    6: Singing Ice
Deep in Antarctica is a massive slab of singing ice roughly the size of France. I'm talking about the Ross Ice Shelf, which happens to be the biggest ice shelf in all of Antarctica. It covers a massive area of over 500,000 square kilometers, and scientists have recently uncovered that the ice shelf sings a very creepy melody.

    5: Mount Erebus
It might not be obvious just by looking at the white wasteland of Antarctica, but there are actually several volcanoes all across the continent. Specifically, there are four volcanoes on Ross island, with the biggest being Mount Erebus. Mount Erebus has been active for roughly 1.3 million years, with a liquid lava lake viewable from the opening of the volcano.

    4: The Giant Hole
In 2017, a hole roughly the size of Ireland opened unexpectedly in Antarctica. This phenomenon is known as a polynya, and the one from 2017 is the largest hole ever to be observed in over 40 years. It was found in the Weddell Sea of the Southern Ocean, and was formed because of warmer and saltier water coming in from deeper parts of the ocean.

    3: The Fifth Ocean
You are probably familiar with the two main oceans, the Pacific and the Atlantic. And you may vaguely know about the other major oceans, the Indian Ocean and the Arctic Ocean. But did you know that in the year 2000 the 5th ocean of the world was added to the list? It is the 4th largest and surrounds the full continent Antarctica.

    2: Ancient Meteorites
You may be surprised to learn that NASA does not only operate in space. They have actually been hanging out in Antarctica lately looking for meteorites. While meteorites do fall periodically all over the world, they are way easier to find in Antarctica. Meteorites hit glaciers and get buried in the ice, then accumulate over thousands and thousands of years.

    1: Lost Civilization
While not yet discovered, many people believe there is proof of a lost civilization hidden somewhere beneath the ice of Antarctica. This has been a theory for a long time, going so far back as H.P Lovecraft’s epic book, The Mountains of Madness, in which a terrible alien civilization was uncovered beneath the ice.

    10: Dinosaur Fossils
Believe it or not, some of the strangest things ever found in Antarctica have been dinosaur fossils. In 2016 alone, researchers announced that they discovered a diverse cache of many fossils in Antarctica.

    9: Ancient Meteorite
An ancient meteorite that was found in Antarctica over 20 years ago is still the topic of a lot of controversy. It all started when NASA scientists announced that they had found possible signs of Martian life inside a meteorite from Antarctica.

    8: Buried Viruses
One of the strangest discoveries to happen on the continent of Antarctica has been of a viral nature. I'm talking about viruses buried beneath the ice! As the planet begins to warm, the ice begins to thaw.

    7: Antarctic UFO
This next story is not in any way confirmed. However, the photographs that have appeared online of a UFO frozen under the ice of Antarctica are definitely thought provoking. It's actually a little scary. A Russian man published the photo on social media after finding it on Google Earth. In the photo you can see a crack in the ice and what appears to be a UFO deep down inside of it.

    6: Hidden Antarctic Pyramids
Deep in the frozen world of Antarctica, there is a mountain that looks suspiciously like a pyramid. This mountain has become famous recently on social media, with many people pointing out that it could be evidence of a previous civilization that lived on the continent before it was frozen in ice.

    5: Oldest Worm Ever
You probably wouldn't expect to find sperm in Antarctica. Typically, things that don't have bones don't fossilize very well. This includes sperm and worms. That's what makes it so strange that scientists discovered fossilized worm sperm in Antarctica that is at least 50 million years old.

    4: The B-15 Iceberg
The first thing that comes to mind when you think about an iceberg is probably the Titanic sinking. And while the iceberg that hit the Titanic was pretty sizable, the biggest iceberg on record was actually recorded in 2000.

    3: Crash Landing
There is only one possible explanation for the photo that has appeared online of what looks to be some sort of crash landing in Antarctica. It's obviously an alien spaceship! In the photograph, it looks like some kind of spear-shaped craft hit the ice, skidded for quite some time, and then was buried under the snow.

2: The Loneliest ATM On Earth
Everyone knows that money rules the world. One of the strangest things you would discover on a trip to Antarctica has nothing to do with aliens, wildlife, or geological formations. The strangest thing is definitely the loneliest ATM machine in the world.

    1: The Icefish
Last on the list for today is one of the strangest fish ever to be found in Antarctica. New research has shed some light on the fish known as the Antarctic blackfin icefish. This weird sea creature has a transparent skull and see-through blood! It’s an absolute anomaly in the world of marine life.

    10: Secret Nazi Base
Antarctica has no shortage of unsettling discoveries. Weird stuff is being found here all the time. And ever since the 1940s, people have been talking about secret Nazi bases lost on the continent of Antarctica.

    9: UFO Evidence
Is there proof of alien life hiding in Antarctica? This is a question that has been thrown around a lot lately, but a recent unsettling discovery may be the final piece of evidence we need. A video has been uploaded online that appears to show a disc roughly 60 feet wide jutting out from the snow and ice of Antarctica.

    8: Unexpected Fossils
There's nothing better than an unexpected discovery, especially in a place like Antarctica. A new discovery of a fossil is seriously freaking people out. It's been labeled as the real-life Loch Ness Monster, and according to Fox News, scientists are absolutely shocked.

    7: Remains of Murder
Antarctica has a dark side. It's not just a frozen wasteland with a single ATM and a whole lot of cute penguins. In 1985, there was a horrifying and extremely unsettling discovery made in this remote place.

6: The Ice is Almost Gone
Perhaps one of the most unsettling discoveries that has ever come out of Antarctica is something we all already know. This place is running out of ice! In just a few decades, the continent of Antarctica has lost trillions of tons of ice.

    5: Ancient Rainforest
While the fact that scientists have discovered traces of an ancient rainforest in Antarctica is not in itself unsettling, the implications kind of are. It is a bit freaky to think that this frozen wasteland once held a magnitude of life and maybe even humans.

    4: Secret Ruins
Let's continue looking into Antarctica’s mysterious past. For a long time, there have been rumors that a hidden city is frozen beneath the ice of Antarctica. And while the recent evidence of a rainforest existing on the continent definitely helps out this theory, there's actually a bit more to it than that.

3: The Piri Reis Map & Lost Atlantis
One of the more unsettling clues to the ancient history of Antarctica wasn’t actually discovered on the continent. But get ready to have your mind blown nonetheless! The Piri Reis map was drawn in 1513 and is the earliest surviving map of the Americas.

    2: Organism 46-B
This next one is completely out to lunch, but it's been reported by so many legitimate news sources, like Express News, that there may be a grain of truth to it. Allegedly, during an expedition to a subterranean lake in Antarctica, Russian scientists discovered a horrifying creature that is being called Organism 46-B.

    1: The Antarctic Cubes
The Antarctic cubes are absolutely bizarre. The image of the cubes was first taken in Antarctica in 1995, and yes it's 100% legitimate. The photographs even won the top prize in the Royal Society's Annual scientific photography competition in 2017.

    SUMMARY:
    - This was a truly shocking discovery: 3 elongated skulls were found in Antarctica in 2014. These skulls were the first human remains uncovered in Antarctica.
    - For the last 50 years, people have found more than 10,000 meteorites in Antarctica. Some of them are more than 700,000 years old.
    - It turns out that dinosaurs used to live in Antarctica! Since the ‘80s, scientists have discovered almost a ton of fossils there. Most of these remains are more than 71 million years old.
    - Archaeologists made another amazing discovery in 2009: the ice of Antarctica had been hiding the fossilized remains of a unique creature. It was the size of a modern cat, but, unlike our popular pets, the animal was egg-laying.
    - An unaware onlooker might easily believe that the Taylor Glacier is leaking blood. Terrifying blood-red liquid indeed flows over the ice and falls into the sea. Luckily, the origin of this water isn't dramatic at all. This unusual waterfall contains so much iron oxide that it makes the water look like blood.
    - While Antartica is a snow-covered continent, you probably wouldn’t associate it with a lack of water. However, this land is home to one of the driest locations on our planet: the Dry Valleys.
    - 2 boxes of excellent Scotch whiskey were hidden in the ice of Antarctica for more than 100 years. After archaeologists discovered this unexpected treasure, they didn't remove it from its ice trap immediately because they were afraid of damaging their finding.
    - At a depth of 1,100 ft, American archaeologists made a truly terrifying discovery — they came across an unknown creature that didn't resemble any other living being known to people.
    - Scientists know of approximately 400 lakes in Antarctica. Due to incredible pressure, water stays liquid even when its temperature is below the standard freezing point.
    - In 1914, the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition began. Its aim was to cross the icy continent from one side to the other. 2 ships participated in the voyage. Tragically, one of them got stuck in the ice and was crushed.

  • Ghost creature of Antarctica has survived 30 ice ages

    3:27

A primitive insect-like creature that has survived 30 ice ages was recently rediscovered in Antarctica by a team of scientists who had been searching for it for decades. This is what we affectionately refer to as the ghost collembola, says BYU biology professor Byron Adams, who conducts regular research in Antarctica. And we call it the ghost collembola because it's white, like a ghost, but because we had not found it after looking for it for years and years and years, we started to wonder if it was even real, if it really existed. In a paper published August 24, 2020, in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Adams and colleagues from eight different research institutions produce genetic data from the microscopic critters that corroborate climate reconstructions and estimates of past warm periods of reduced ice and absent ice shelf in the Ross Sea region of Antarctica.

Video produced by BYU University Communications

“Genetic diversity of soil invertebrates corroborates timing estimates for past collapses of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet” was published in the Research published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) August 24, 2020.

This research project was supported by the National Science Foundation (OPP projects 1341736 and 1637708).

    News release from BYU News:
What tiny microscopic creatures can tell us about climate change
The world’s scientists have been trying to figure out how exactly ice sheets in Antarctica have changed and moved for decades. Knowing this is critical to understanding rises in sea level and the accompanying global impacts.
Many of those efforts have produced promising models of ice ages and warmer periods, but confirming their accuracy has been difficult to nail down.
Now researchers, led in part by BYU’s Antarctic researcher Byron Adams, are using the history of tiny little microscopic Antarctic animals to solidify exactly how ice sheet dynamics played out over time and how they impacted historical ecosystems.
“The evolutionary history of biological organisms can corroborate what we infer from glaciology and geology about climate change in the past,” said Adams, a professor of biology at BYU. “In so doing, we are better able to predict how life on earth might respond to these types of changes now.”
In a new paper published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Adams and colleagues from eight different research institutions produce genetic data from the microscopic critters that corroborate climate reconstructions and estimates of past warm periods of reduced ice and absent ice shelf in the Ross Sea region of Antarctica.
The researchers have spent the past 20 years collecting samples of six different species of microarthropods across 91 Antarctic locations. These tiny animals, known as Collembola, live in the soil. They have very limited mobility and can only colonize areas that are ice-free. During ice ages, the ice sheets advance, expanding their coverage of habitable space, while during warming periods, the ice sheets contract and get smaller, leaving more open real estate where the soil animals can disperse.
By studying their current locations and patterns of genealogical and evolutionary divergence, Adams and his team are able to better understand how the West Antarctic Ice Sheet has changed overtime. The researchers found four species of the creatures that each showed genetically distinct populations at locations likely isolated for millions of years. The two other species were less genetically diverse, although they were restricted in range.
Together, these patterns give an independent estimate of the timing and magnitude of Antarctic ice sheet advances and retreats.
“Biology can be a powerful tool for making inferences about earth history,” said Adams. “We were thrilled to see the evolutionary history of the organisms is consistent with current models and geological and glaciological estimates of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet dynamics.”
Fellow researchers on the project came from institutions including the University of Waikato, Polar Knowledge Canada, the British Antarctic Survey, the University of Pretoria, the Ohio State University, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, and Colorado State University.
Adams himself has traveled to the Ross Ice Shelf every year for the past 17 years to collect samples. His research on tiny creatures, from water bears to nematodes, has provided a number of insights into historical climate change.
“If we really want to understand how climate change will impact us in the future, it is important to understand how it impacted life in the past,” he said.

    Incredible Recent Discoveries in Antarctica!
Antarctica is one of the least explored regions in the world, but it’s not because we’re not trying. The
harsh, freezing conditions make any exploration quite difficult. That’s why it’s only recently that the
frozen continent has revealed some of its secrets. Number one is quite the amazing discovery so make
sure you stay tuned for that as we give you just some of the most incredible recent discoveries in
    Antarctica.

    A Giant Ice Cave
Imagine a giant cave under the ice around two thirds the size of Manhattan and nearly a thousand feet
tall. Hard to believe that such a thing exists? Well it does, and it’s growing larger and more menacing
    every day.
This giant void is hiding under the Antarctic ice at the bottom of the Thwaites Glacier in West Antarctica
was just recently discovered using satellite images of the area. Scientists thought there might be some
gaps between Thwaites Glacier and the bedrock below it, where ocean water could flow in and melt the
icy glacier above it. But even they found the immensity and speed of the void's growth surprising.
For starters, the void is large enough to have once held 15 billion tons of ice, but, according to NASA
scientists, much of that ice has melted during the past three years. Thwaites Glacier is about the size of
Florida and currently responsible for roughly 4 percent of global sea rise. If the entire glacier melted, the
resulting water could raise world ocean levels by more than 2 feet.

    Unexpected Residents
Antarctica would be the last place you’d expect to find dinosaur fossils. But believe it or not, dinosaurs
did really live there for a time. Long ago, Antarctica was a much warmer place, home to dinosaurs and
lush plant life. Even before the dinosaurs roamed, an iguana-like Triassic reptile called the Antarctica
    home.
Scientists announced the discovery of the reptile, dubbed Antarctanax shackletoni, just last year. The
250 million-year-old creature was an archosaur, a precursor to the lineage that would branch into
dinosaurs, pterosaurs and crocodilians. This animal probably grew to 4 to 5 feet long, and scuttled
around what was then the Antarctic forest floor.
Not only that, Antarctica was also home to the world's heaviest elasmosaurid, a plesiosaur of the genus
Aristonectes. Paleontologists discovered the long-necked sea creature on Antarctica's Seymour Island in
1989, but they weren't able to finish excavating the enormous fossil until 2017. They ultimately pulled
1,760 pounds of fossilized bone off the island.
While it was alive, the Antarctic Loch Ness monster would have been 36 feet long and weighed in at a
hefty 15 tons. The creature lived only a few tens of thousands of years before the Cretaceous-Paleogene
extinction 66 million years ago, when an asteroid collided with Earth and wiped out the non-avian
    dinosaurs.

    A Rare Lava Lake
Antarctica seems to be a weird place to find a lake full of lava, but that is what researchers actually
found in the icy South Sandwich Islands in the Antarctic Ocean. The lake is anywhere in between 300 to
700 feet across and temperature of the lava could be more than 1,000 degrees Celsius.
Researchers actually found this fiery lake quite a few years ago in an active volcano, but was only
recently able to confirm its existence thanks to higher quality satellite photos.
Lava lakes are actually a rare occurrence and only seven other such lakes are known to exist in the
world. they can be found in volcanoes in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Vanuatu, Hawaii
    and Nicaragua.

    Singing Ice
Researchers on Antarctica's Ross Ice Shelf have recorded the slow seismic hum generated by wind forces
whipping across the ice sheet's frozen landscape. The scientists liken it to 'singing', but to our ears the
creepy dirge of Antarctic ice shelf vibrations sounds more like the sinister score of a horror movie.
The frequency detected is far too low for the human ear to hear naturally, but when it's sped up some
1,200 times, what emerges is an eerie soundtrack of restlessness hidden within the bleak polar isolation.
The sound has been likened to the sounds of a flute, but go and have a listen for yourselves and tell us
    what you think.

The researchers actually came across this seismic hum by accident while researching a totally different
thing. As the world keeps getting catastrophically hotter, Antarctic ice shelves are beginning to
    dramatically collapse and break apart.

  • NASA Satellite Shows Ancient Structures & Mysterious Pyramid in Antarctica

    10:54

Melting snow in Antarctica due to global climate change may have revealed signs of ancient human settlement on the icy continent. Some researchers believe that the disappearing snow is finally exposing the mysterious truth about the South Pole, that ancient sailors may well have reached the continent hundreds if not thousands of years before 19th century sealers and explorers. Their ancient settlements may be revealed in satellite images from NASA, which appear to show strange markings beneath the snow, some of which look like ancient structures, including a mysterious pyramidal building. But how old are these enigmatic remains and who built them?

    10. Ice Tunnels
Underneath one of the most remote outposts in the world, there is a network of tunnels cut into the ice! Amundsen-Scott Station is a research hub that can house hundreds of researchers at a time with state-of-the-art technology.

    9. Subglacial Volcano
In 2013, scientists published an alarming study describing the first-ever discovery of a subglacial Antarctic volcano! Found in the Marie Byrd Land highland region, nobody knows when it will erupt, but when it does happen, it “will create millions of gallons of water beneath the ice -- many lakes full,” according to a statement from study leader Doug Wiens. He further explained that the eruption will send water gushing toward the sea and into a major ice stream, which drains Antarctic ice into the Ross Ice Shelf.

    8. Leningradskaya Station
For 20 years from 1971 to 1991, Leningradskaya Station served as the Soviet Union’s Antarctic base, where scientists studied meteorology, glaciology, oceanology, magnetism, and more. Built on a tall cliff by the 15th Soviet Antarctic Expedition on the Oates Coast of the Victoria Land region, it regularly combated extreme winds, storms, and cold, which made life at Leningradskaya far from comfortable and perhaps even dangerous.

    7. Long Lost Wallet
While stationed in Antarctica in 1967 and 1968, Navy meteorologist Paul Grisham lost his wallet. He cut his losses, moved on, and eventually forgot about it -- until 53 years later, when someone returned the 91-year-old’s long-lost property.

    6. Future Plants
In recent years, scientists discovered evidence that West Antarctica was a lush temperate rainforest around 90 million years ago, during the age of the dinosaurs, standing in stark contrast to its current barren and frozen state. Practically nothing can live there now !

    5. Martian Mineral
Science Magazine recently reported the discovery of a rare martian mineral rarely seen on Earth, beneath the Antarctic ice. Known as Jarosite, it is a yellow-brown mineral that requires water and acidic conditions to form, according to NASA. It is actually found in abundance on Mars. Scientists have long wondered how jarosite became so plentiful on Mars, with some speculating that the planet was once covered in ice, facilitating the process necessary for it to form.

    4. Mummified Penguins
In 2016, ornithologist Steven Emslie discovered dozens of penguin corpses -- some long-dead and mummified, others who appeared to be recently deceased -- at Cape Irizar on the Scott Coast of the Ross Sea.

    3. Fossilized Egg
In 2011, Chilean scientists discovered a fossil egg resembling a deflated football on Seymour Island, off the Antarctic coast. Then, it sat unidentified for nearly a decade in the collections of Chile’s National Museum of Natural History. Dating back an estimated 68 million years, it likely belonged to a gigantic extinct marine reptile -- perhaps a mosasaur -- that lived during the time of the dinosaurs.

    2. Underwater Methane Leak
Last year, researchers revealed the 2011 discovery of the first known underwater methane leak in Southern Antarctica, beneath the Ross Ice Shelf. Methane is a greenhouse gas that is up to 25 times more capable than carbon dioxide of exacerbating climate change. In other places throughout the world, methane-eating microbes eat the gas spewing from leaks, preventing it from entering the atmosphere.

    1. HUMAN-SIZED PENGUIN
Between 37 and 40 million years ago, penguins taller than the average modern human roamed Antarctica, according to a 2014 study by a team of researchers from the La Plata Museum in Argentina. Dubbed the “colossus penguin” (Palaeeudyptes klekowskii), the fossil used for the research is the most complete fossil ever found in Antarctica.

    7:32

5 Incredible Discoveries in Antarctica 2020#antartica#discoveries#ice#undergroung#lakes
For centuries, Antarctica has captured our imaginations. This southernmost
continent is an awesome place, in the old-fashioned sense of the word. Precipitous
mountains, grinding glaciers and icebergs of every configuration, and a surprising
range of colors make up Antarctica's wondrous landscape. There’s still a lot of
things we don't know about Antarctica. The last thing discovered in Antarctica and
the least explored continent of Antarctica holds many mysteries, but the things
early explorers and modern-day scientists have discovered are quite amazing.
    5. Underground lakes Antarctica discoveries
It’s difficult to imagine anything beneath the thick layers of ice in Antarctica, yet
scientists have discovered a number of underground lakes. Lake Vostok,
discovered in the 1990s by Russian scientists, is the largest subglacial lake in
Antarctica. Scientists have since drilled deep holes into the ice to extract a sample
of the lake water and one sample showed the water to be around -3ºC, despite
being covered by ice over 20 million years ago.
    4. Mount Erebus Antarctica discoveries
Despite the freezing conditions, Antarctica discoveries are home to a number of
    volcanoes.
Scientists cannot often visit Mount Erebus due to the remote location and
dangerous weather conditions, although a team of scientists managed to climb the
    volcano in 2013.
    3. A Giant Hole (Polynya) Antarctica discoveries
A hole the size of Ireland opened in Antarctica in 2017. Known as a polynya, the
the hole is nothing new - except with a span of 78,000 square kilometers, it’s the
the largest hole to be observed since the 1970s, and the first one to open in 40 years.
Scientists aren’t completely sure why the polynyas are created, but believe it may
be marine mammals using the openings to breathe. They’re still working to
understand the impacts of these strange, giant holes.
    2. Fossil Forests Antarctica discoveries
Antarctica is an ancient land that has undergone some incredible transformations
over millions of years. Before it became a frozen dessert after the Ice Age,
Antarctica was actually a warm region with rainforests and possibly even
    civilizations.
The theory developed from the discovery of fossilized wood, signs of tropical
trees, and leaf impressions that show the existence of rainforests in Antarctica.
Scientists have also found a ton of fossils from marine animals, birds, and
dinosaurs from the Cretaceous Period. Among the smaller species, they've
uncovered the fossilized forewings of a beetle species that lived between 14 and 20
million years ago in a warmer climate, and tiny single-celled fossils that have been
a great source of debate among scientists.
    1. Unusual creatures Antarctica discoveries
Antarctica is a barren, icy desert with very little rain, fierce winds, and the coldest
temperatures on earth (the coldest recorded temperature was -89.4°C); yet it’s also
home to a myriad of unique wildlife. It was previously thought that nothing could
survive beneath the massive ice sheets, however, scientists have discovered a
number of unusual species that have adapted to the harsh environment. There are
microbes, crustaceans, colossal squid, leggy spiders the size of dinner plates, giant
worms with shiny golden bristles, and a large, sharp-toothed jaw.
So this is the end of the video “5 Incredible Recent Discoveries in Antarctica!”,
we hope you really enjoyed it. Thanks for tuning in!

    10. A ‘Lost City’
Scientific evidence strongly suggests that Antarctica was once mostly or entirely ice-free. Around 90 million years ago, during the Cretaceous Period when the Earth got much warmer, the southerly continent appears to have hosted dense, thick vegetation, which was adapted to survive even through four months of annual darkness.

    9. BASE 22
Besides the belief and rumours that an ancient “lost city” existed in Antarctica, some people believe that the continent once hosted a top-secret Nazi base equivalent in size to a small city. Simply called “Base 22” or “New Berlin,” the alleged fort was supposedly used not just by the Nazis, but also the Illuminati. The Nazis are believed to have been very obsessed with the occult.

    8. Gamburtsev Mountains
In 2010, scientists revealed the existence of a massive mountain range hidden beneath the Antarctic ice. Dubbed the Gamburtsev Mountains, the peaks rise to over 8,000 feet (2,400 meters), and are buried beneath a thick layer of ice over one mile (1.6 km) down in the continent’s eastern interior region.

    7. “Pyramids”
In 2016, images of mountains in the shape of a pyramid went viral. Many argued that these structures looked like they were manmade and proof of an ancient people. The structures were found in Antarctica’s Ellsworth Range giving rise to rampant rumors that an ancient civilization built the constructions around 100 million years ago -- long before our earliest human ancestors emerged into existence.

    6. Antarctic Polynya
In September 2017, researchers spotted something called the Maud-Rise Polynya in an ice pack in Antarctica’s Lazarev Sea. What’s a polynya? It is a body of unfrozen ocean that appears within a thick body of ice.

    5. Doomsday Glacier
Earlier this year, scientists stationed on Antarctica’s Thwaites Glacier, which covers an area the size of Florida, released footage of the glacier’s grounding line -- in other words, the point where the glacier meets the land. As part of the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration, the Melting at Thwaites grounding zone and its control on sea level, or MELT team, collected samples and data of what’s considered one of Antarctica’s most important and hazardous glaciers.

    4. Cave Entrance
Late last year, Google Earth users called attention to what appeared to be a yet-unidentified cave entrance on a remote Antarctic island, which allegedly first appeared in 2007. The sighting supposedly occurred on Greenwich Island, a southerly Antarctic isle.

    3. “Singing” Ice
Using seismic sensors, scientists spent over two years gathering recordings on the Ross Ice Shelf. Their findings were revealed in a late 2018 study, which revealed that the continent’s ice “sings” at a constant frequency of five hertz, or five cycles per second. This humming noise results from regional and local winds, and is affected by factors such as surface snow and ice, storms shifting the positions of dunes, and excessive melting, according to LiveScience.

    2. Deep Lake
As generic-sounding as its name is, Deep Lake is a very specific place. Located in East Antarctica, this isolated water body harbors a barely-productive yet sustained ecosystem, despite having saline levels 10 times higher than the world’s oceans. This high salt content is what keeps Deep Lake liquid, even though it hits temperatures as low as minus four degrees Fahrenheit (-20ºC) at its deepest point.

    1. Miles-Long Structure
In 2012, a 14-mile long (22.5 km) “structure” in Antarctica spotted on Google Earth left people online pretty confused. It’s a white blur that has provoked speculation that it is a secret government research station, a buried UFO, and who knows what else!

  • Scientists Drill One Mile Underneath Antarctica And Make A Mind Blowing Discovery

    11:00

Scientists drill one mile underneath Antarctica and make a mind blowing discovery. Today, we take a look at what these scientists discovered underneath Antarctica.

One might think that, after centuries of technological advancement by scientists and researchers, we would have finally begun to understand the planet we live on and the impact that we have on it.

And while at times it seems like that may be true, just when we think we know as much as we can, a discovery will turn our knowledge on its head and make us realize that, despite the wealth of information out there, there is still so much that we don’t yet know.

No single country has exclusive ownership rights to Antarctica, and barely anyone sets foot on its vast, icy expanse, making the southern, baron oasis the ideal place to conceal some of society’s most damning secrets.

  • 260-Million-Year-Old Fossilized Trees Of Antarctica Shocked Scientific Community

    10:30

The recent discovery of fossilized trees dating back more than 260 million years has shocked the scientific community. Together with other recently discovered fossilized plant and tree discoveries on Antarctica these finds suggests something that should not be - that the world’s coldest, driest continent was once green and forested. Amongst other things, scientists have had to come up with an explanation of how trees were able to survive within a few degrees of latitude of the South Pole itself, where it is dark for six months of the year. But what does this all mean for scientific theories about Antarctica? Will they have to be changed?
