Inside the United Kingdom's Tech Renaissance

  • Inside the United Kingdoms Tech Renaissance

    28:27

In this episode of Hello World, Bloomberg’s Ashlee Vance heads to England to find out how the country is fighting to inject new life into its technology industry. The trip starts out in Bletchley Park. From there, it’s off to Cambridge, the heart of England’s technology scene. Vance hangs out with learned cows and artificial intelligence whizzes, bikes past Newton’s famed apple tree (at least a reasonable replica of it), and goes punting with the inventor of the Raspberry Pi computer. From Cambridge, it’s off to the Cotswolds and the headquarters of Dyson to see its latest creations. And then on to London to check out some startups and whine about Brexit while drinking the world’s most exotic cocktails at the Langham Hotel.

  • Warning that coronavirus track and trace isn’t working well, as new outbreaks emerge - BBC News

    6:31

A senior health official in Blackburn with Darwen, a borough in North West England with one of the highest infection rates for Covid-19, has warned that the test and trace system isn't working well.

It comes as Scottish authorities investigate whether workers at an NHS test and trace facility in North Lanarkshire have themselves become infected with coronavirus.

Covid-19, the disease caused by the virus, only came to light at the end of last year, and the more scientists study it the more they're learning about who is most at risk.

  • Game Changer: Bethany Koby, Technology will Save Us

    2:47

As part of our Game changers series we meet Bethany Koby, who is on a mission to spark the creative imagination of kids with hands-on technology.

Her company, Technology Will Save Us, produces a range of make-it-yourself kits for children to develop technology-based skills and passions.

Products include a wearable device that kids can code themselves, a Micro:Bot kit to make toy robots and a music kit to create and amplify sound.

In the five years since its inception the company has attracted millions in venture capital funding and now boasts a staff headcount of more than 30 designers, engineers, problem solvers and educators.

With programming added to the UK school curriculum, a sizeable opportunity has been created for the company that also works with the UK's largest after-school club, Code Club, to teach digital skills to kids.

    Focusing on the journey

Like many entrepreneurs, Bethany views the growth of her company as a journey with many ups and downs rather a smooth, gentle ride to a destination. The “rollercoaster” nature of entrepreneurship means, she says, that you need a sense of “certainty and focus” about what it is you do.

I think every entrepreneur will say that entrepreneurs are crazy – you have to be! And crazy in the kind of ambitious, you want to make something better, making sure that you really love the thing that you’re building, because you’re going to have those lows that are going to make you feel like it’s not possible. But if you really believe in it you’ll find a way to go through the journey of building a business.

  • The nuclear fuel cycle - its vital role in the nuclear renaissance

    50:11

Nuclear energy is the preferred option for electrical power generation in an increasing number of countries around the world. However the growth in nuclear power depends on completing /closing the nuclear fuel cycle and this depends on safe, economic reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel and responsible storage and disposal of nuclear waste.

Very few countries contemplating new nuclear build programmes have the expertise and infrastructure to complete the nuclear fuel cycle. France generates 80% of its electricity from nuclear power and has, arguably, the greatest expertise and experience of facilities for completing the fuel cycle. Électricité de France (EDF), which operates over 70 nuclear reactors worldwide, has chosen to recycle its fuel assemblies.

The lecture examines the importance and challenges of closing the nuclear fuel cycle, illustrates how the expertise and facilities have been deployed on an industrial scale in France, and highlights the lessons for other countries. Ongoing issues arising from the Fukushima incident for fuel cycle activities and facilities will also be discussed.

  • How Energy Innovation Works: an interview with Matt Ridley by Alex Epstein

    1:4:27

From Alex Epstein, host of Power Hour.

On this week's Power Hour (June 3, 2020) I interview one of my favorite writers and thinkers, Matt Ridley, on energy innovation.

Matt has just released a new book, How Innovation Works--And Why It Flourishes Under Freedom. You can get the book here:

Energy is a central focus of the book, just as it is a central focus of one of Matt's previous books, The Rational Optimist.

This was a particularly fun discussion that, in addition to covering a lot about energy and innovation, also covered many elements of what it means to be a humanist who loves nature and is fascinated by nature.

    Some topics we covered included:
    * Why Ridley considers the conversion of heat to work to be perhaps the most important innovation.
    * The true story of innovation in fracking and why the conventional narrative about it being a government-led innovation is false.
    * Why there's so little innovation in nuclear--and what to do about it.
    * Why freedom is crucial to innovation.
