  • Solar storms – a threat from space | DW Documentary

    Enormous, unpredictable solar storms pose a serious threat to our power supplies and data networks. The US space agency NASA has launched a probe that's designed to study the cause of these mysterious space storms.

    The sun supplies us with light and energy. But it also generates huge streams of solar plasma that speed through space. These storms occur at irregular intervals, and can last for several years. Scientists have expressed serious concerns about this situation.

    Particle emissions from the last major solar storm in 2017 narrowly missed the earth. But in 2003, a stream of solar particles caused power surges in transformers and blackouts in Malmö, Sweden, and temporarily disabled two Japanese satellites. And in 1989, solar storms caused a six-hour power outage in Quebec, Canada.

    Scientists still can't predict when these storms will occur. So the US space agency NASA has launched a probe that's designed to fly closer to the sun than ever before. The probe will spend seven years gathering data on the ring of plasma that surrounds the sun.

    Experts from several different countries are taking part in the project, called the Parker Solar Probe. They include German astrophysicist Volker Bothmer. The European Space Agency, ESA, has launched a similar spacecraft, dubbed the Solar Orbiter.
    The fact that two space agencies have recently launched solar probes shows that scientists are seriously concerned about the problem of solar storms.

  • The Ending Of Interstellar Finally Explained

    Directed by Christopher Nolan, Interstellar is a fantastic tale of time, space, and love. But if you got a bit lost in the final act of the film, we wouldn’t blame you. So let’s do our best to walk through the bizarre, mind-bending ending of Interstellar.

    Life on Earth isn't great in Interstellar. Massive dust storms are tearing up the planet, crops are failing, and soon, humanity will cease to exist. Looking for answers, NASA turns to the skies, hoping for some kind of insight.

    As we learn at the beginning of the film, a group of 12 scientists traveled through a mysterious wormhole that appeared near Saturn, to see if the 12 planets on the other side could sustain human life. A few years later, the Endurance and its crew including Matthew McConaughey's Cooper and Anne Hathaway's Brand are going to visit the three most promising planets in the hopes of colonizing one. When they arrive on Dr. Mann's planet, the heroic scientist assures them his icy cold spot is the perfect place for humans to live.

    Unfortunately, it's soon all revealed to be a ruse. Although each of the original 12 scientists knew their trip was one-way, Mann admits he never fully considered the possibility that his planet would be uninhabitable, and that he might die alone. Although he resisted the urge for years, he eventually falsified his survey data to coax another team to travel to his planet, intending to use the Endurance to escape.

    At this point, Mann is so desperate to leave that he'll do anything, even kill. Paranoid that the Endurance crew won't go along with his plan once they learn what he's done, Mann attempts to kill Cooper so he can make his getaway.

    Back on Earth, Cooper's now-grown children find themselves at odds. His daughter, Murph, played by Jessica Chastain, has realized the surface of our planet has become uninhabitable. So naturally, she's trying to persuade her brother, Tom, to bring his family to the secret NASA facility where she's been working on the gravitational equation that would allow humanity to escape into space en masse.

    But despite Murph's warnings, Tom refuses to abandon the farmhouse where they grew up. After Cooper left them in their grandfather's care when they were children, never to be heard from again, Tom lost all faith in NASA's ability to help them.     Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson explains the possibility of going faster than the speed of light. If we look at the Einstein's special relativity theory, the speed of light in vacuum has constant velocity of 186,282 miles per second. If you could travel at this speed, you could go around the Earth 7.5 times in one second.



    In 1994, Miguel Alcubierre proposed a method that would take us beyond the speed of light limit. In his mathematical theory, he used two points in space-time to demonstrate the expansion and contraction of space fabric. The idea of Alcubierre's theory was that we could use this space-time warp to make an object travel faster than light.


    Neil deGrasse Tyson takes examples from science fiction works like Star Trek to demonstrate and explain how an advanced civilization could be capable of manipulating the fabric of space-time itself in order to travel faster than the speed of light.


    Einstein's theory of special relativity states that energy and mass are interchangeable, and speed of light travel is impossible for material objects that, unlike photons, have a non-zero rest mass.


    Neil deGrasse Tyson explains how Einstein's theory of general relativity allows for time itself to slow down if you travel at relativistic velocity


    Einstein's theory of general relativity mathematically predicts the existence of wormholes, but none have been discovered to date. Even if a wormhole could form, it would most likely be very unstable. Wormholes are still speculative because nobody really knows if you could pass through it. The math suggests that you need some sort of exotic material to pry the throat of the wormhole opening so that it wont collapse in on it self. Even then it is possibly unstable.

    Mimi Leder (The Peacemaker) directed this science-fiction disaster drama about the possible extinction of human life after a comet is discovered headed toward Earth with the collision only one year away. Ambitious MSNBC reporter Jenny Lerner (Tea Leoni) stumbles onto the story, prompting a White House press conference. United States President Beck (Morgan Freeman) announces the government's solution: a team of astronauts will travel to the comet and destroy it. The team leader aboard the spaceship Messiah is Spurgeon Tanner (Robert Duvall), who was once the last man to walk on the moon. However, the mission fails, splitting off a chunk of the comet, now due to land in the Atlantic with the impact sending a 350-foot tidal wave flooding 650 miles inland, destroying New York and other cities. The larger part of the comet, hitting in Canada, will trigger an E.L.E. (Extinction Level Event), not unlike a nuclear winter as dust clouds block out the sun and bring life to an end.     Interstellar travel is crewed or uncrewed travel between stars or planetary systems. Interstellar travel would be much more difficult than interplanetary spaceflight. Whereas the distances between the planets in the Solar System are less than 30 astronomical units (AU), the distances between stars are typically hundreds of thousands of AU, and usually expressed in light-years. Because of the vastness of those distances, practical interstellar travel based on known physics would need to occur at a high percentage of the speed of light, allowing for significant travel times, at least decades to perhaps millennia or longer.
    The speeds required for interstellar travel in a human lifetime far exceed what current methods of spacecraft propulsion can provide. Even with a hypothetically perfectly efficient propulsion system, the kinetic energy corresponding to those speeds is enormous by today's standards of energy development. Moreover, collisions by the spacecraft with cosmic dust and gas can produce very dangerous effects both to passengers and the spacecraft itself.
    A number of strategies have been proposed to deal with these problems, ranging from giant arks that would carry entire societies and ecosystems, to microscopic space probes. Many different spacecraft propulsion systems have been proposed to give spacecraft the required speeds, including nuclear propulsion, beam-powered propulsion, and methods based on speculative physics.

    In the 400 years since Galileo Galilei first held a telescope to the heavens, astronomers have laid bare some of the deepest mysteries of the cosmos. They have seen comets crash into planets, found oceans inside moons, and witnessed the shudder of spacetime as black holes collide.

    But space remains a realm of the unknown. Writing in the journal Nature on Thursday, scientists in Canada reported the detection of mysterious radio signals from halfway across the universe. It is only the second time that repeating fast radio bursts, or FRBs, have been spotted.

    Astronomers have yet to formulate a full theory of what produces these enigmatic, rapid-fire beams of electromagnetic waves. And in the absence of a firm explanation, speculation has fallen, perhaps inevitably, on alien civilisations. Avi Loeb, a Harvard astronomer, has proposed that FRBs might be powerful energy beams used to propel alien spacecraft.

    It is not the first time that poorly-understood cosmic phenomena have been ascribed to industrious extraterrestrials. When in 2015 astronomers noticed a star, 1,500 light years distant, dimming and brightening, researchers suggested an “alien megastructure” might be revolving around it, and collecting energy for its constructors. Then, in 2017, the massive cigar-shaped ‘Oumuamua barrelled into the solar system, the first interstellar object known to do so, and prompted speculation that it was a tumbling spacecraft.

    Chris French, head of the Anomalistic Psychology Research Unit at Goldsmiths, University of London, said it was natural for humans to see aliens behind every cosmic mystery. “We have what is called an intentionality bias,” he said. “It’s the assumption that whenever something happens, something or someone made it happen for a reason. In the context of space, that someone is always going to be aliens.”

    The evolutionary argument for intentionality bias, or “agenticity”, is that our ancient ancestors fared better if a rustle in the bushes made them run for cover rather than assume it was the wind. “At the end of the day, our brains evolved to keep us alive rather than apprehend the truth of the universe,” said French.

    The late astronomer Carl Sagan spotted the dilemma for scientists. They can become cranks if they are too open-minded, but may miss out on landmark discoveries if they are not open-minded enough. “It seems to me what is called for is an exquisite balance between two conflicting needs,” he said. “The most sceptical scrutiny of all hypotheses that are served up to us and at the same time a great openness to new ideas.”

    Duncan Lorimer, an astrophysicist at West Virginia University, discovered the first FRB in 2007. When his team spotted the radio burst, the possibility of it being a message from ET certainly came up. “We absolutely thought about aliens,” he said. “We only had the one object. We looked for patterns in the signal and couldn’t find anything, but we definitely considered it.”

    Now, mention of aliens is beginning to wear thin. “It helps to sell the story, but at this point I do roll my eyes a bit,” he said. Many astronomers now favour the idea that FRBs are intense beams of radiation shed by charged particles as they are whipped around by strongly magnetised neutron stars. “It seems like a more plausible idea, but I don’t want to rule out aliens completely,” he said. “I’ve been wrong before.”

    Interstellar Travel

    Interstellar travel is the term used for hypothetical crewed or uncrewed travel between stars or planetary systems. Interstellar travel will be much more difficult than interplanetary spaceflight; the distances between the planets in the Solar System are less than 30 astronomical units (AU)—whereas the distances between stars are typically hundreds of thousands of AU, and usually expressed in light-years. Because of the vastness of those distances, interstellar travel would require a high percentage of the speed of light; huge travel time, lasting from decades to millennia or longer; or a combination of both.


    The speeds required for interstellar travel in a human lifetime far exceed what current methods of spacecraft propulsion can provide. Even with a hypothetically perfectly efficient propulsion system, the kinetic energy corresponding to those speeds is enormous by today's standards of energy production. Moreover, collisions by the spacecraft with cosmic dust and gas can produce very dangerous effects both to passengers and the spacecraft itself.


    A number of strategies have been proposed to deal with these problems, ranging from giant arks that would carry entire societies and ecosystems, to microscopic space probes. Many different spacecraft propulsion systems have been proposed to give spacecraft the required speeds, including nuclear propulsion, beam-powered propulsion, and methods based on speculative physics.

  • Gaias mission: solving the celestial puzzle

    A space mission to create the largest, most-accurate, map of the Milky Way in three dimensions will revolutionise our understanding of the galaxy and the universe beyond.

    On 19th December 2013, a rocket blasted into the sky from a launch site in French Guiana and travelled 1.5 million km to reach its destination in orbit around the Sun. The spacecraft is called Gaia. Its mission, funded by the European Space Agency and involving scientists from across Europe, is to make the largest, most precise, three-dimensional map of the Milky Way ever attempted.

    It will be a census of a billion stars spread across our galaxy. The results, says Professor Gerry Gilmore from Cambridge's Institute of Astronomy and the Principal Investigator for UK involvement in the mission, will revolutionise our understanding of the cosmos as never before.

    The dream of interstellar travel
    Since the beginning of the space age, humanity has cherished the dream of interstellar travel. But being able to overcome the abyss of space that separates us from even the closest stars is a titanic feat, if it must be accomplished within the span of a human life. It is necessary to travel 4.24 light-years, that is, over 40 trillion km [1], to reach the two central stars of Alpha Centauri’s triple system. To get to Barnard’s star, just a little further away, there are almost six light-years to cross, equal to 56.4 trillion km [2].

  • The Warped Side of the Universe: Kip Thorne at Cardiff University

    Professor Kip Thorne is a theoretical physicist and Nobel laureate. In this talk he discusses My Romance with the Warped Side of the Universe: from Black Holes and Wormholes to Time Travel and Gravitational Waves.

    Kip is a world-leading expert on the implications of Einstein's theory of General Relativity, from time travel to wormholes, and from black holes to gravitational waves. Until 2009 he was the Feynman Professor of Theoretical Physics at Caltech, but has since retired to take up a new career in writing, and collaborations between science and art. He was executive producer and scientific adviser on Interstellar, the 2014 blockbuster film. One of Kip's key contributions was the visualisation of black holes and their surroundings, which contributed to the film winning an Oscar for Best Visual Effects. Kip explained the science in the film in his 2014 book The Science of Interstellar. His many other multimedia projects have cemented his reputation to be able to explain complex concepts in ways that everyone can understand.

    As one of the founders of LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory), Kip was awarded the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics for decisive contributions to the LIGO detector and the observation of gravitational waves, along with Rainer Weiss and Barry C. Barish. The first detection of gravitational waves by LIGO (of which Cardiff University is a member) in 2015 confirmed a key part of Einstein's theory of General Relativity, and observations have continued to test one of science's most famous theories.

While our chemical-based rockets have taken us to a myriad of planets, moons, and other bodies in the Solar System, the farthest spacecraft ever launched by humanity — Voyager 1 — is only 22.3 billion kilometers (13.9 billion miles) from Earth: just 0.056% of the distance to the closest known star system. With current technology, it would take close to 100,000 years to travel to another star system.
