    For more than 40 years, people have lived in space over longer periods of time - first on the space stations Saljut and Skylab, today on the international space station ISS, and perhaps soon in a spaceship on its way to Mars. But man is not made for space. The universe is so hostile to life that humans can not survive there permanently. Skeptics, conspiracy theorists claim that all manned space travel is just a well-staged drama and the moon landing is the biggest lie of all. Since man has set out to conquer outer space and then the universe, conspiracy theorists accompany the work of scientists and explorers. And at the same time, UFOs (unidentified flying objects) have been sighted with claims of visits by your favorite martian aka extraterrestrials. Mankind’s advance into space has triggered the imagination of earthlings since humans first looked up at the stars. And so, in addition to the epochal discoveries, countless myths and legends have arisen as well.

    The world is not enough for conspiracy theories. Since the first launches into space numerous myths and legends around space travel and astronauts abounded. The first images from space depicted our planet in spherical form. All lies was a cry heard immediately from so-called experts.: The earth is and remains a disc. To this day, there are advocates of the flat earth theory, which was actually refuted even before the birth of Christ.

    The claim that the earth is flat was almost extinct, but the Internet is helping fuel this theory in a kind of renaissance of fools. Any kind of conspiracy theory ever invented in the context of space travel is getting a revival in the age of the world wide web. The biggest of all is the denial of the successful landing of man on the moon.

    Hardly any other human event spawned such wild speculation as Neil Armstrong's moon landing as well as the eleven other US astronauts. Just a few months after the first steps on the Moon, skeptics accused NASA, its scientists and astronauts, and the entire US government as liars. The landing never took place, the live images were recorded in Hollywood studios, the whole moon program is a huge bluff. To this day, despite proof to the contrary, the conspiracy theorists continue to beat the drum of denial.
    But there is also a lot happening on planet Earth. Ever since man conquered space, first with balloons and then with airplanes, earth dwellers regularly sight unknown flying objects: UFOs. The first UFOs were reported at the end of the 19th century; at about the same time as the first attempts to launch aircraft heavier than air into the sky. The UFOs levitate alien creatures on Earth to collect humans as research objects or to keep in contact with the powerful leaders of the world. There’s more: US military are thought to have captured several extraterrestrials and keep them hidden in a secret facility, including the flying saucers they landed with. The site: A US Air Force test site in the Nevada desert known as Area 51.
    But even everyday problems and phenomena of manned and unmanned space travel repeatedly create fodder for skeptics, doubters and conspiracy theorists. Sci Fi movies are also fantastic sources for creating new myths and legends.
    In this Episode of Spacetime we try to shed some light on the dark realm of conspiracies, myths and legends. Astronaut Ulrich Walter explains what really happens to people in space, should they find themselves without a spacesuit. He shows us how to live and survive in weightlessness and why even flights deep into the solar system do not have to be lethal to humans. We look at what UFO sightings are all about and what's behind them and why Area 51 is so mysterious.
    We examine the surface of Mars, which appeared on the first photos of the Red Planet and terrified crowds of people. We explain the function of the warp drive and whether you can really travel through the universe with it. And of course we explain why man actually set foot on the moon.

The black hole at the centre of our galaxy is known as Sagittarius A-star. Of enormous size, it devours everything while remaining totally invisible.

  • The Ending Of Interstellar Finally Explained


    Directed by Christopher Nolan, Interstellar is a fantastic tale of time, space, and love. But if you got a bit lost in the final act of the film, we wouldn’t blame you. So let’s do our best to walk through the bizarre, mind-bending ending of Interstellar.

    Life on Earth isn't great in Interstellar. Massive dust storms are tearing up the planet, crops are failing, and soon, humanity will cease to exist. Looking for answers, NASA turns to the skies, hoping for some kind of insight.

    As we learn at the beginning of the film, a group of 12 scientists traveled through a mysterious wormhole that appeared near Saturn, to see if the 12 planets on the other side could sustain human life. A few years later, the Endurance and its crew including Matthew McConaughey's Cooper and Anne Hathaway's Brand are going to visit the three most promising planets in the hopes of colonizing one. When they arrive on Dr. Mann's planet, the heroic scientist assures them his icy cold spot is the perfect place for humans to live.

    Unfortunately, it's soon all revealed to be a ruse. Although each of the original 12 scientists knew their trip was one-way, Mann admits he never fully considered the possibility that his planet would be uninhabitable, and that he might die alone. Although he resisted the urge for years, he eventually falsified his survey data to coax another team to travel to his planet, intending to use the Endurance to escape.

    At this point, Mann is so desperate to leave that he'll do anything, even kill. Paranoid that the Endurance crew won't go along with his plan once they learn what he's done, Mann attempts to kill Cooper so he can make his getaway.

    Back on Earth, Cooper's now-grown children find themselves at odds. His daughter, Murph, played by Jessica Chastain, has realized the surface of our planet has become uninhabitable. So naturally, she's trying to persuade her brother, Tom, to bring his family to the secret NASA facility where she's been working on the gravitational equation that would allow humanity to escape into space en masse.

    But despite Murph's warnings, Tom refuses to abandon the farmhouse where they grew up. After Cooper left them in their grandfather's care when they were children, never to be heard from again, Tom lost all faith in NASA's ability to help them. In doing so he is moving in a deadly environment characterized by cold, heat, and cosmic radiation. But one of the biggest dangers in space was put there by man himself: space debris poses a threat to astronauts and satellites.
    If one of these fragments were to hit the ISS, the international space station, it could have devastating consequences - even the demise of the whole crew.
    Hundreds of thousands of these fragments are hurtling through the Earth’s orbit at an estimated speed of eight kilometres a second, and every one of them could cause a disaster.
    Ever since space flight began man has also left his refuse behind in space. Satellites, spacecraft, and the International Space Station are permanently at risk of being hit, damaged, or even destroyed by particles of scrap. Astronauts are also at risk from cosmic radiation. Our sun, too, can mean death for humans in space.

  • Voyager 2 Finds Wall Of Fire And Enters Interstellar Space!


    There are a lot of things out there in the universe that need our attention, but a wall of fire found by the Voyager probes? Yeah, that's something else. Join us as we explore exactly what's going on here.
    7. What Are The Voyager Probes?
    Considering that we're talking about how the Voyager Space Probes were the ones that discovered this wall of fire in deep space, it would probably be nice to know what they are, right?
    Voyager 1 is a probe that humanity sent out to observe the universe at large, and it's currently well past Pluto and has shown us many things about our solar system. In 2017, it was set at around 138 AU's from our planet. AU means Astronomical Unit, which in this case means the distance from the Earth to the Sun. So 138 AU's means that it's 138 times far than the Earth is from the sun right now. That's a really big number. Over 12 billion miles to be exact. That's the farthest anything from man has traveled in space.
    One of its crowning achievements was a photograph showing a set of sunbeams, and in one of those sunbeams was earth. It was a dot. A dot in a grander scale photograph of our solar system. That's how small we are in the scale of our system when you look from the outside in, we are a dot. An epic dot, but a dot no doubt.
    But what might shock you even more is that despite the distance that Voyager 1 has traveled, it'll never reach the end of our solar system. Our solar system is confined within what is known as the Oort Cloud. And to reach the edge of that cloud would take another 30,000 years for the Voyager 1. Which should show just how big our solar system is, and how condensed the space the planets that are in it is.
    6. The Wall Of Fire
    While it's true that the Voyager Probes haven't left the solar system as of yet, that doesn't mean they haven't gone far. They are in a place now that is defined as Interstellar Space, though that classification can mean many different things. In the context of this video though they're past the Heliosphere. That is where solar winds emitted from our sun still blow things outwards. So in many ways, the probes are away from the reach of the sun.
    But, what Voyager 2 (backed up by data from Voyager 1) has found is that once they're outside that reach, the plasma that is out in space doesn't go down, it actually goes up in density by a large margin!

    The Voyager probes are showing us how our Sun interacts with the stuff that fills most of the space between stars in the Milky Way galaxy, said Ed Stone, project scientist for Voyager and a professor of physics at Caltech. Without this new data from Voyager 2, we wouldn't know if what we were seeing with Voyager 1 was characteristic of the entire heliosphere or specific just to the location and time when it crossed.
    5. The Problem With Plasma
    Plasma, if you didn't know, is the fourth state of matter, and it was always known, or at least believed, that there was some outside the Heliosphere, as between the suns' emissions and the rest of the universe pouring things into deep space, it was basically pretty natural for it to be there. And when Voyager 1 first reached the point of Interstellar Space, it noticed some slightly higher levels of plasma, but it was Voyager 2 that showed that it was MUCH bigger than anticipated.
    Plasma is very hot, and while the Wall of Fire is said to be somewhat colder than the sun's plasma it's dispersing regularly, it's still hot enough to mess with people and objects, which we'll be talking about later. But more importantly than that is that it's thick. This is well and truly a wall of fiery plasma.
    4. Leaks?
    As noted, there are many problems with this wall of fire, and one of them may just be how exactly this thing is forming. After all, scientists were a bit stunned by the density that the Wall of Fire exudes in Interstellar Space. But what might be even more surprising though is that Voyager 2 indicates that part of the reason the field of fire is so thick is that the Heliosphere has a leak in it.
    3. Magnetic Fields and Magnetic Shields
    The discovery of the Wall of Fire wasn't the only thing that people at NASA were interested in when it was discovered. Instead, it was also the fact that there was new information given about the magnetic fields that were there in the outer reaches of interstellar space. You see, our solar system is held within a magnetic field that is comprised mostly of the suns' field. Not unlike the orbits of the planets and such. Thus, when you get out of the reach of the sun via the Heliosphere, it goes to reason that the magnetic field would go off in a different direction entirely. In fact, that is what everyone at NASA thought before Voyager 1 & 2 proved them very, very wrong.
    2. The Question Of Space Travel
    Ok, so now let's talk about one of the biggest problems with this Wall of Fire. are we going to get past it?

    SPACETIME - SCIENCE SHOW: The beginning of everything was the Big Bang. The creation of our universe was set in motion. But what came before the big bang? And what happened right after the big bang? We are fascinated by the infinite vastness of the universe. A vastness inconceivable to anything we can imagine. But how do we know that the universe is infinite? These are the questions humanity has been preoccupied with since we looked up at the stars: where do we come from? Where are we going? And where is our place in the infinity of the cosmos?

    The Big Bang is the absolute starting point of our universe. The birth of space and time. But was there really nothing before that? A nothing beyond our imagination, or was there something before the big bang? What cosmologists and astrophysicists can say with certainty: Our universe came into existence exactly 13.8 billion years ago. And everything started from a single speck. A tiny speck where our three-dimensional universe, space, was buried. But where was this speck, this dot? There is no answer comprehensible for average human imagination. Only mathematics helps here. And it states: this three-dimensional, strongly curved speck was just there.

    After the big bang, our universe ballooned. And continues to expand today, maybe for all eternity. Nevertheless, astronomers define the universe as manageable: it is as big as the eye can see. It consists of what we can observe in principle. In order to discover and observe galaxies and stars, we need to light. The light of our central star, our sun, takes 8 minutes to reach us. The light of the nearest stars a few years. Tens of thousands of years from the next galaxies. The Hubble Space Telescope photographs galaxies several billion light-years away, and satellites measure the microwave radiation produced only 400,000 years after the Big Bang. With this data, cosmologists measure our universe in space and time.

    Let there be light! In this episode of Spacetime, Professor Ulrich Walter explains how out of nowhere our universe emerged. How it expanded, and what happened and continues to happen today. We focus on the question whether our Universe will last forever, or whether it is finite. What would happen at the end? We examine the phenomena that our cosmos holds: What are dark energy and dark matter? Why black holes exist and how do wormholes work? Are there really parallel universes? And what does the detection of gravitational waves mean for science? We look at the theories, methods and instruments that cosmologists use to track down the origin and function of our universe.
    The view into space gives us images of a fascinating and bewildering beauty. Landscapes of light and gas and stardust, shaped by cosmic wind and radiation. We are surrounded by an intangible infinity. A universe in which the earth is just a grain of sand on the beach of an ocean. But we are deciphering more and more secrets of the universe around us.

  • NASA reports seeing the 1st confirmed alien object to enter Earths solar system


    NASA: Scientists were surprised and delighted to detect --for the first time-- an interstellar asteroid passing through our solar system. Additional observations brought more surprises: the object is cigar-shaped with a somewhat reddish hue. The asteroid, named ‘Oumuamua by its discoverers, is up to one-quarter mile (400 meters) long and highly-elongated—perhaps 10 times as long as it is wide. That is unlike any asteroid or comet observed in our solar system to date, and may provide new clues into how other solar systems formed.

  • Does Planet 9 Exist?


    A planet has been predicted to orbit the sun with a period of 10,000 years, a mass 5x that of Earth on a highly elliptical and inclined orbit. What evidence supports the existence of such a strange object at the edge of our solar system?

    I had heard about Planet 9 for a long time but I wondered what sort of evidence could support the bold claim: a planet at the very limits of our ability to detect one, so far out that its period is over 60 times that of Neptune. The planet 9 hypothesis helps explain clustering of orbits of distant Kuiper belt objects. It also explains how some of these objects have highly inclined orbits - up to 90 degrees relative to the plane of the solar system. Some are orbiting in reverse. Plus their orbits are removed from the orbit of Neptune, the logical option for a body that could have ejected them out so far. The fact that the perihelion is so far out suggests another source of gravity was essential for their peculiar orbits.

  • What The Voyager Spacecraft Found In Interstellar Space

    Number 11. Main Objectives

    Voyager 2 was launched on August 20, 1977, and Voyager 1 followed 16 days later. These probes were designed using a lot of information gathered from the Pioneer 10, a spacecraft launched in 1972 that eventually reached the velocity required to leave the solar system - although it has yet to do so. Voyagers 1 and 2 were built with the primary mission of studying Saturn and Jupiter. Luckily for NASA, these probes went far beyond the two planets and have provided astounding information about the mysteries of deep space.

    Number 10. Jupiter: Voyagers 1 & 2

    The first stop on the list for both spacecraft was Jupiter. Voyager 1 began its Jupiter flyby in January 1979 and became closest to the planet that March. At 217,000 miles - or 349,000 kilometers - from the gas giant's center, Voyager 1 was able to take high-resolution photographs of Jupiter. It maintained this distance for about 48 hours, taking some of the most detailed images of Jupiter ever seen. Voyager 1 also discovered that one of Jupiter's four Galilean moons, Io, experiences continuous volcanic activity, which has a significant impact on the planet's magnetosphere. Voyager 2 didn't get as close to Jupiter as its twin, only reaching 350,000 miles - 570,000 kilometers - from the cloud tops. But, the second probe confirmed the volcanic findings of Io. The Voyagers observed a total of nine erupting volcanoes on the moon.

    Number 9. Saturn: Voyagers 1 & 2

    Following Jupiter, the probes journeyed to Saturn. Coming within 77,000 miles - 124,000 kilometers - of the ringed planet's cloud tops, Voyager 1 found complex structures in Saturn's rings in addition to studying its atmosphere and Titan, the planet's giant moon. Both probes discovered that powerful winds blow near Saturn's equator, measuring 1,100 miles per hour. They also found phenomena similar to Earth's aurora borealis - or northern lights - in the form of ultraviolet hydrogen emissions near the middle of Saturn's atmosphere. With its flybys of Jupiter and Saturn, Voyager 1's primary mission ended, and its adventure to interstellar space began.

    Voyager 1 is a space probe that was launched by NASA on September 5, 1977. Part of the Voyager program to study the outer Solar System, Voyager 1 was launched 16 days after its twin, Voyager 2. Having operated for 42 years, 7 months and 15 days as of April 20, 2020, the spacecraft still communicates with the Deep Space Network to receive routine commands and to transmit data to Earth. Real-time distance and velocity data is provided by NASA and JPL. At a distance of 148.61 AU (22.2 billion km; 13.8 billion mi) from Earth as of March 12, 2020, it is the most distant man-made object from Earth.

    The probe's objectives included flybys of Jupiter, Saturn, and Saturn's largest moon, Titan. Although the spacecraft's course could have been altered to include a Pluto encounter by forgoing the Titan flyby, exploration of the moon took priority because it was known to have a substantial atmosphere.Voyager 1 studied the weather, magnetic fields, and rings of the two planets and was the first probe to provide detailed images of their moons.

    After completing its primary mission with the flyby of Saturn on November 12, 1980, Voyager 1 became the third of five artificial objects to achieve the escape velocity required to leave the Solar System. On August 25, 2012, Voyager 1 became the first spacecraft to cross the heliopause and enter the interstellar medium.

    In a further testament to the robustness of Voyager 1, the Voyager team completed a successful test of the spacecraft's trajectory correction maneuver (TCM) thrusters in late 2017 (the first time these thrusters were fired since 1980), a project enabling the mission to be extended by two to three years.

    Voyager 1's extended mission is expected to continue until about 2025 when its radioisotope thermoelectric generators will no longer supply enough electric power to operate any of its scientific instruments.

    Scientific literature and, above all, science fiction abound with proposals and ideas to turn the dream of interstellar travel into reality. Unfortunately, the truth is that we are still far from having the technical-scientific skills to send a human crew to other stars

    The dream of interstellar travel
    Since the beginning of the space age, humanity has cherished the dream of interstellar travel. But being able to overcome the abyss of space that separates us from even the closest stars is a titanic feat, if it must be accomplished within the span of a human life. It is necessary to travel 4.24 light-years, that is, over 40 trillion km [1], to reach the two central stars of Alpha Centauri’s triple system. To get to Barnard’s star, just a little further away, there are almost six light-years to cross, equal to 56.4 trillion km [2].

    So far only two probes have left the boundaries of our solar system. It took Voyager 1 – the fastest spacecraft ever built – 40 year of flight to reach the interstellar medium. Further exploration of deep space, interstellar medium and travel to neighboring stars requires new ways of spacecraft design and propulsion. Conventional chemical and electric propulsion systems are impractical for such far-reach missions. Photon propulsion, in contrast, is not bounded by the rocket equation and provides practical means for fast deep-space exploration.

    In this talk we discuss of light sail design needed for future breakthrough photon propulsion missions. Specifically, we discuss two scenarios: beamed energy propulsion with high power ground based lasers and extreme solar sails making use of small perihelion approach. We consider material challenges and photonic designs that can enable such extreme light sails for future photon propulsion.

    In our analysis we make a comprehensive analysis of materials properties, their thermal stability an optical responses, particularly absorbance and deduce that a certain set of ceramic and high index semiconductor materials is particularly suited for high radiation power. We then discuss different photonic structures that can help minimizing the mass of the sail.

    Our analysis suggests that ultrathin film materials for solar and laser beam sailing may designed. Specifically we show that solar sails capable of greater than 30Au/year may be designed, as well as laser sails that can be propelled to relativistic speed.

    Our technology is at TRL 2.

    We further identify next steps needed to extend the TRL, specifically we will discuss the use of machine learning, optimization, and experimental testing. The long term goal is flight demonstration and in-space technology testing.

    Near term goals include laboratory stauied of materials and demonstration of their performance in extreme radiation environment.

    Our analysis shows a great promise for the design of novel photon propulsion systems for a scalable and fast space exploration and deep space travel.
