Iranian government spokesperson Ali Rabiei emphasised that Tehran believes that Armenia should leave the occupied lands of Azerbaijan amid the ongoing clashes in Nagorno-Karabakh, at a press conference in the Iranian capital on Tuesday.

Rabiei also stressed that Iran would react if the conflict in its neighbouring countries spilled over its borders.

We are deeply worried about any harm to the lives and properties of our citizens in our borders. In case of repetition of this accident, with considering all the possible options, we won't be indifferent, said the spokesperson, in reference to recent incidents where shells from the conflict injured people on Iranian soil.

Rabiei explained that Iran is in a unique position to mediate between the parties and repeated that Iran had formulated a plan t to end the conflict.

On US President Donald Trump's recent coronavirus infection and having contracted the virus himself, Rabiei said that he thought having the virus would be a good experience for Mr. Trump to think about humanitarian issues.

I hope COVID-19 will have this effect so he thinks in a more humanitarian way considering other people lives and universal issues and [make him] able to change their cruel view of health and the right to life, he stated.

Human being are members of a whole,
In creation of one essence and soul.
If one member is afflicted with pain,
    Other members uneasy will remain.
If you've no sympathy for human pain,

    28:16

There’s an old Persian saying that “when there’s fire, dry and wet burn together”. It could be an apt description of the COVID-19 pandemic, which affected every country on the planet but Iran and the United States - more than others. Can this new invisible adversary, which upended so many things in our lives, shake up their sworn and tired enmity? To discuss this, Oksana is joined by Iran’s Foreign Minister, Javad Zarif.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani expressed his country's opposition to the clashes in Nagorno-Karabakh, during a weekly cabinet session in Tehran, on Wednesday, calling on both sides to find a political solution.

We are deeply opposed to the war, the war must stop, and no one will benefit from the continuation of the war. Of course, we respect the rights of the people of [the Republic] of Azerbaijan, we emphasize territorial integrity [of Azerbaijan], but nothing will be solved by the approach of fire, war, and blood. There are other approaches and we are ready to help for those other approaches, in any way we can afford, Rouhani said.

The Iranian president called out the warring sides, Armenia and Azerbaijan, for shells landing on Iranian soil.

This fact that some rounds hit our soil, mortar rounds, cannonballs, Katyusha rounds. This is totally unacceptable for us. Both of the neighbouring countries that we have very good relations with both of them, [Republic of] Azerbaijan as our brother, Armenia as our neighbour, we ask both of them to pay attention to this important issue.

Fighting in the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh broke out on September 27 when Azeri and ethnic Armenian soldiers exchanged fire. It's been the heaviest clashes in the region since 2016 with dozens of casualties reported. Both sides blame each other for the escalation and report of thousands of casualties.

  • US ‘could go to war’ with Iran

    4:34

Tensions between the United States and Iran have increased dramatically in the last week after the US imposed a round of sanctions relating to what it claims were breaches of a nuclear agreement, according to Sky News host Brent O’Halloran.

“Tensions with the United States and Iran have been strained for quite a while,” Mr O’Halloran said.

Mr O’Halloran said there are “fears of a future war with Iran” after the US in September imposed a new round of sanctions related to “what it claims were breaches of a nuclear agreement.”

“With just weeks from the US presidential election, and just a few months from Iran’s, either leader may make a sudden career-defining geo-political play, he said.

“The clock appears to be ticking to prevent all-out war.”
