Kermode: The salmon fishing spirit bear

  • Kermode: The salmon fishing spirit bear

    51:39

Our film journey begins in Alaska's west. We are hoping to find glacier bears in the glacial regions of the Katmai National Park on the Douglas River. At the end of July, brown bears have now arrived to fish for salmon. In the surrounding forests, grizzlies look for berries and fresh, green twigs. The Katmai is Alaska's most volcanic area, and with 15 active volcanoes it is a veritable powder keg, surrounded by glaciers. In the Hook glacier region moose and lynx accompany us. Bald eagles have arrived at the glacial boundary and begin to tear apart their freshly caught prey. At last, we catch sight of a glacier bear. Hungry, he has left the ice region and has been forced down here in search of food, which he satisfies extensively with fresh shoots and berries.
Continuing our film trip, we head for Prince Royal Island in British Columbia. En route, we meet with black bears on their way with their young to fish for salmon. The mother bears have to remain alert to protect their young, as we have spotted some New World porcupines too.
Then, out of the blue, directly in front of us: the Kermode, or spirit bear. He shows no signs of timidity and is only interested in one thing: salmon. Then, a further Kermode appears, enjoying his cranberry dessert, allowing us to approach him, almost too close for comfort. But a black bear arrives on the scene and claims the cranberry bush for itself. After a brief confrontation, the Kermode opts to leave, preferring to focus on salmon fishing. Fascinating footage of this rare species of animal.

In the vast wilderness of Canada's west coast lie forests that are home to North American black bears that through a quirk of genetics are born pure white and known as ghost bears. Katmai, Alaska -- Noted for volcanoes, brown bears, pristine waterways, abundant fish and rugged coastline.

In 1912, a volcano called novarupta, erupted and was the most powerful volcanic eruption of the 20th century. The explosion was heard 700 miles away in Juno and ash fell as far away as Texas. The valley became buried by the volcanic ash.

Katmai is a bear-viewing destination. Katmai is known for it's brown bear population with over 2,000 in the national park. You can see them especially during the salmon run. We look at how their mothers teach them the skills they need to survive and watch the many dangers they face. Their young lives are full of learning, moments of great tenderness and life-threatening drama. Over three years all of our bears, despite hardships and losses along the way, prove they have what it takes, they all have learned their bear essentials.

MANDATORY ON SCREEN CREDIT – Steven Rose

A rare bear bear has been caught fishing for his dinner in a shallow river.

Steven Rose, 63, captured the white bear - known as a spirit bear - while visiting the Great Bear Rain Forest in British Columbia, Canada, which is thought to be the only place in the world where these animals can be pictured.

His images, taken last October, show the bear successfully hunting for fish across the river.

Steven, a Canadian photography guide, said: “The bears can be seen cleverly digging up the eggs laid by the salmon by clawing away the sand on the riverbed to expose the eggs, then gulping them up.

  • Spirit Bears | Les ours kermode

    4:05

In a world full of green, the spirit bear stands out immediately. When we first saw one walking towards us, we were in complete awe. Spirit bears are a rare sub-species of black bear present in British Columbia. 1/10 of the bears have white-coloured coats. There are estimated to be about 400 spirit bears in the world, 40 of which are white. We feel so fortunate to have been able to meet two white spirit bears and three black ones. We have the Gitga'at Nation to thank for this experience. The nation has worked tirelessly to protect the spirit bear and its habitat. Meet the spirit bear in our new video.

The white bears are known as Moksgm'ol to the people of the First Nations, and as Kermode bears to scientists. They aren't polar bears or albino bears—rather, they're black bears born with a double recessive gene that turns their fur white.

Less than 400 of these rare bears exist, and their largest numbers are found in the Great Bear Rainforest.

The Nature Conservancy recently led and completed a successful fundraising campaign in support of historic land use agreements in the Great Bear Rainforest. As a result of these agreements, 5 million acres of the rainforest are now off limits to logging and more than 19 million acres are under strict land management guidelines called ecosystem based management.

  • Polar Bears Try to Catch Salmon

    2:23

Polar bears need the ice to hunt and as it vanishes they can no longer reach their traditional prey. With each Arctic summer providing more water and less ice, some polar bears are forced to try their luck with seaweed, birds, and Arctic char, a type of salmon, as they migrate upstream to spawn. Their ability to find food and develop new hunting skills may prove crucial to their survival.

Hidden from the outside world, the Great Bear Rainforest is one of the planet’s most exquisite and secluded wildernesses. Found on Canada’s rugged west coast, it is the largest temperate coastal rainforest in the world and is home to the indigenous First Nations people, who have provided stewardship of the forest for millennia. Embark on a remarkable journey into a land of grizzlies, coastal wolves, sea otters, and humpback whales—and discover the secret world of the Spirit Bear.

Narrated by Ryan Reynolds. Featuring a score composed and arranged by Hans Zimmer and Anže Rozman for Bleeding Fingers Music.

Great Bear Rainforest is a Spirit Bear Entertainment film presented by Seaspan in association with Destination British Columbia and distributed by MacGillivray Freeman Films. #GreatBearRainforest

  • Searching For Salmon & Bears Up Close Videos - Driving Alaska Plus Wolverine Creek Float Plane.

    47:16

My wife and I love Alaska. But for this trip we came in July so we could see the Salmon runs and see all the people fishing for Salmon, the Bears catching Salmon and Salmon underwater. I was lucky enough to capture it all plus much more during our 8 day driving trip from Anchorage to Soldotna, to Seward and back to Anchorage. Then (see my 2nd video on Brooks Falls) we were able to see the Bears catching Salmon in mid-air and much more.

But for this video we drove to Soldotna and took a float plane to Wolverine Creek. We spent the day on a small boat right outside of the Bears’ reach watching Bears collecting Salmon up so close it will scare you. But the videos are awesome. I’ve a bear eating, playing in the water, snorkeling and more. And up so close it’s amazing.
We captured Salmon schooling underwater up so close they hit the camera. We even found spawning Salmon in a small stream. Plus we saw hundreds of fishermen and women having a great time pulling in one Salmon after another. It was amazing. Everyone, Everywhere fishes for Salmon In Alaska in July. We cruised the Kenai Fjords and much more. Alaska is a great place to be in July.

  • Simon Jackson on speaking up for the spirit bears

    3:30

When he was 13 years old, Simon Jackson founded the Spirit Bear Youth Coalition to raise global awareness of threats to the Great Bear Rainforest. In doing so, he had to overcome a fear of public speaking and endured bullying by his peers. His story is now the subject of a new children's book, “A Voice for the Spirit Bears.”
