    2:54:10

Watch the NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Douglas Hurley return back to earth in SpaceX Crew dragon or Dragon 2 Spacecraft.

Astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken will disembark from the International Space Station in their SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft, deorbit, and splash down in the Atlantic Ocean about 21 hours later. Crew Dragon was launched to the ISS atop a Falcon 9 rocket on May 30, 2020. During their 2-month stay on ISS, Hurley & Behnken have been conducting scientific experiments, testing Crew Dragon's systems, doing spacewalks to replace space station batteries, and of course exercising for 2 hours each day.

    They’re coming home! ????

On Aug. 1, NASA astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley will depart from the International Space Station aboard SpaceX’s Dragon “Endeavour” spacecraft as a part of NASA's crew Dragon Mission after their mission aboard our orbiting laboratory which is ISS(International Space Station). Starting at 5:15 p.m. EDT, tune in for our live coverage to see the duo undock from the station and make their return back to planet Earth.

On Saturday, May 30, SpaceX’s Falcon 9 launched Crew Dragon’s second demonstration (Demo-2) mission from Launch Complex 39A (LC-39A) at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, and the next day Crew Dragon autonomously docked to the International Space Station. SpaceX and NASA are now targeting 7:34 p.m. EDT on Saturday, August 1 for Crew Dragon to autonomously undock from the Space Station, with the two astronauts aboard the spacecraft, and return to Earth.

Approximately 19 hours later, after jettisoning its trunk and re-entering Earth’s atmosphere, Dragon will splash down at one of seven targeted water landing sites off the coast of Florida at 2:42 p.m. EDT on Sunday, August 2.

The Demo-2 mission is the final major milestone for SpaceX’s human spaceflight system to be certified by NASA for operational crew missions to and from the International Space Station. Once the Demo-2 mission is complete, and the SpaceX and NASA teams have reviewed all the data for certification, NASA astronauts Victor Glover, Mike Hopkins, Shannon Walker, and JAXA astronaut Soichi Noguchi will fly on Dragon’s first six-month operational mission (Crew-1) targeted for late September.

Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken arrived at the International Space Station on May 31, the day after becoming the first astronauts to launch from Florida tucked inside a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule. But this weekend, they have to tackle one of the most challenging aspects of the mission: leaving the space station, spending hours inside that same capsule, parachuting through Earth's atmosphere and splashing down off the coast of Florida.

The splashdown procedure marks the final hurdle of the duo's mission, dubbed Demo-2, and marks the final test for SpaceX's commercial crew system. After a safe return, the company should be clear to launch regular missions to the orbiting laboratory.

Every step of the Demo-2 mission has been an evaluation of the new spacecraft, and both Behnken and Hurley and NASA leadership have emphasized throughout the mission that it has been a test flight. The astronauts' job has been to vet every aspect of the vehicle and ensure it is ready for regular use by crewmembers, but it also means that they have been guinea pigs of a sort throughout the mission, and that holds for their return as well, although the astronauts said they're unfazed.

For decades, U.S. astronauts returning from space have touched down on land, either in a runway landing like those conducted by NASA's space shuttles or in a parachute landing as the Russian Soyuz capsules do. The last American crew to return to the ocean did so 45 years ago, at the end of the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project mission in which astronauts met up with Soviet cosmonauts in orbit.
Although NASA is eager to see the Demo-2 capsule undock, the scheduling of the return trip isn't set in stone. NASA and SpaceX will base the timing of the procedure on a host of weather and ocean criteria at whichever of the seven splashdown sites the team ends up targeting.

    2:36

Astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley spoke on Sunday following their return to Earth from the International Space Station (ISS) on the SpaceX Crew Dragon DM-2 in what was the first splashdown in 45 years for NASA and first ever for SpaceX with crew on board, with Hurley calling it quite an odyssey.

The pair had spent just over 60 days on board the ISS after departing May 30 in what was the first manned space launch from U.S. soil in decades.

Behnken spoke about his and Hurley's experiences, saying they lived through a big chunk of the shuttle era and of the assembly of the ISS. He said it was also a sad day when they retired the shuttle program in the U.S., saying they're super proud to be part of the team who brought the capability of space flights back to the U.S.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk also spoke, saying the return of the astronauts was something the whole world can take pleasure in as an achievement of humanity, remarking on the current time where there's not much good news and hoped it's something that can brighten people's day no matter where they are on Earth.

  • NASA Announces Astronauts Going to ISS on SpaceX Crew-2 Mission

NASA has announced the astronauts headed to the International Space Station in spring of 2021 for Crew-2, the second operational SpaceX Crew Dragon flight.

  • WATCH: NASA SpaceX Demo-2 mission to launch astronauts to International Space Station | FULL

    14:37

Two American astronauts embarked on the first manned mission to outer space from U.S. soil in nearly a decade on Saturday, formally ushering in a new era of space flight in which private companies — not the government — will send humans into orbit.

Aboard the SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule are astronauts Doug Hurley and Robert Behnken, two veterans of the now-retired Space Shuttle Program who are set for an extended stay on the International Space Station (ISS). Exactly how long they will stay has yet to be determined.

The launch was initially scheduled for Wednesday afternoon but was scrubbed shortly before it was slated to take off due to weather concerns, hours after Tropical Storm Bertha made landfall in South Carolina, hundreds of miles north of Cape Canaveral and Kennedy Space Center.
