Southeast Asia at its best. 85% of the country is untouched nature, widespread forests, steep mountains and wide river valleys, but also cool high plateaus and savannahs. The primeval forests support a fauna like something out of a fairy tale, with elephants, tigers, leopards, and some of the rarest animal species on the planet. Species never seen by humans are discovered at regular intervals. In recent decades, the few large mammals to be described for the first time were all found in Indochina and experts assume that most of them are at home in Laos: wild oxen such as the saola and kuprey or the truong son munjak. No outsider has ever seen a living specimen of the latter; its existence is only known indirectly, through skeletons, horns and bag that are occasionally found in remote villages. And there is the Mekong, one of the last untamed rivers on Earth. Fed by hundreds of tributaries, it is one of the richest freshwater systems on the planet, comparable only with the Congo or Amazon. This is where the Mekong catfish lives. At 3 meters long and weighing in at 300 kilograms, this monster must be the largest freshwater fish on earth.

  • The Akha tribe in Laos: Between tradition and modernity | DW Documentary

    42:12

The Akha in Laos live almost untouched by modern civilization. They still adhere to their archaic customs. But they are on the verge of upheaval.

Cut off from the rest of the world, without a paved road, the village of Peryensang Mai has remained almost untouched by modern civilization to this day. Its inhabitants are from the Akha tribe, and they seem to live in a different time: Their language isn’t even written down; their everyday life is defined by the laws and rituals handed down from their ancestors such as animal sacrifices to ward off bad luck. This adherence to customs that are often quite brutal endows the Akha’s lives with stability and direction. The women of the village have a particularly busy life. Because the Akha are largely self-sufficient, their tasks range from agriculture to housework and making traditional clothing. This documentary tells the story of the Laovan family. Mother Yeapheun has always had to work hard to support her large family. Her husband is the village elder and ensures the Akha observe the strict laws and commandments. The couple and their eldest children cannot imagine life beyond the mountaintop, so the family is pinning its hopes on youngest son Kienglom, who has been going to school in a nearby town since he was eleven years old. Like many mountain tribes in Laos, the Akha are facing a difficult choice: between a move down into the valley, which would mean they would have electricity, running water and better medical care - but also abandoning their ancient rituals. The film takes the viewer on an emotional journey of discovery to a tribe torn between tradition and modernity and facing the need to reinvent itself in today's world.

  • Bhutan – change comes to the Himalayan Happy Kingdom | DW Documentary

    42:27

Bhutan's other name is The Happy Kingdom. The small Himalayan country has one foot in the distant past and the other in the digital age. It's quite a balancing act for Bhutan's citizens.

No other country has recently undergone more radical change than Bhutan. The millennium brought television, the internet and democratization to the last Himalayan kingdom almost overnight. The capital Thimphu has become one of South Asia's fastest growing cities. At the same time, just a few kilometers to the north, 20 thousand nomads still live from herding yak on the high plains of the Himalayas. This documentary tells of the challenges these people face.

We meet young Chewang , who often has to leave his family for months and trek to heights above five thousand meters in search of the caterpillar fungus, a fabled medicinal mushroom. We also follows the journey of five-year-old Doryi, who is separated from his poverty-stricken family when they send him to a monastery. Meanwhile, the committed organic farmer Choki is trying to bring the advantages of modern life to her village. And 73-year-old bowman Ap Chimi is finding the modern world quite a challenge, so he's decided to compete in his last archery tournament to show youngsters in the village that he can still hit the bull's eye as easily as they do.
This documentary takes viewers on a trip through a time that mirrors Western development in the last century. The loss of a communal life in harmony with nature is juxtaposed against the gains made through globalization. Director Irja von Bernstorff, who has made her home in the Happy Kingdom, gives us a unique peek behind the country's tourist façade to reveal what makes the wondrous world of Bhutan so special.

  • From Panama to the Cocos Islands

    44:40

Whoever wants to experience South America as a nature paradise in a small area, should explore Costa Rica. Almost half of the country is covered by rain forest. Numerous animal species are to be found here like the White faced Capuchin, colourful parrots like the Macaw, Veruga Parakeets and Tapirs.

Also lizards from primeval times have their habitat in this region of the planet. The small central American nation not only fascinates with a rich fauna and flora but also with a wonder world under water. Insights into the fascinating world of the jungle show examples like the epiphytes that make their way to the sky at the expense of her host plant.

A view into the culture of the Indian inhabitants of the rain forest of course does not come too briefly either. A diving excursion through the ocean waters of Cocos Island is the highlight of the journey. The spectator will get flesh crawl while watching hundreds of dangerous hammerhead sharks gliding past the camera.

  • The Most Remote Seniors Settlement in the World in a Former Pirate Cave - La Palma is fascinating

    43:22

Thundering waterfalls, ancient forests and an impressive volcanic landscape with black beaches: La Palma is a dream island for nature lovers. It is by far the island of the Canary Islands with the most green, almost half of it is covered with forest.
But once a year the green island is dominated by the color white. On Rosenmontag (Rose Monday), the inhabitants have for decades been targeting those ancestors who returned from abroad wealthy and ostentatiously demonstrated their wealth with powdered faces. The carnivalistic approach culminates every year in a white chaos, with tons of talcum, flour or paint trickling down the uniformly white dressed islanders.

On the Roque de los Muchachos, La Palma's highest mountain at 2,400 meters, stands one of the largest reflecting telescopes in the world. Astrophysicists love the island because it is the perfect place to look into space. Researchers and star lovers look spellbound to Beteigeuze. The giant star is probably in front of a supernova and could become a second moon in the firmament.

Winegrowers from the south of the island are among the pioneers of the Bodega submarina de Canarias, the wine storage under water. In 2007 they began to let bottles of red and white wine mature in different depths of the Atlantic Ocean. Not as a publicity stunt, stored in the sea the wine actually tastes more aromatic and fresher. The bottles are recovered by divers who locate the wine cellar by GPS.

With four-meter-long wooden lances down the gorge, over an abyss or up to the next rock plateau: with the Shepherd's Leap you can conquer impassable, steep terrain. Even the Guanches, the native inhabitants of the Canary Islands, used to herd their goats on La Palma in this way. Today, Salto del Pastor is an off-road sport for tradition-conscious islanders. And sometimes the big fun turns into seriousness: Then the best jumpers are used in search and rescue operations.

In the remote canyons of the island there are countless barrancos, natural caves where the Guanches once lived. To this day, these rustic rock dwellings attract people who no longer feel the need for urban stress. Clever islanders are counting on this trend: They have bought a few caves and converted them into hip rental objects, and rent them out to people who are tired of civilization and to temporary dropouts.

  • Deadliest Journeys - Peru: Vertigo In The Andes

    51:10

From the south to the north of Peru, deep canyons cut through the Andes mountain range. To supply gold mines, cultivate their vines or quite simply return to their villages, men have no other choice but to embark on improbable tracks, cut in the rock. At the end of the road, the big companies always find their place there, baited by the fabulous natural resources of the country, whether it is its basements filled with precious metals or its waters full of fish. But it is rare that all this wealth benefits small hands, those who have to bend in half at the end of the galleries, scrape the earth in the ammonia vapors or risk their lives at the end of a 60 rope. meters high, for a handful of euros ... From the valley of the Marañon river to the Cotahuasi canyon through the Paracas desert, this Route of the Impossible takes the crossroads of a Peru with grandiose landscapes, but where life comes at a high price ...

  • Deadliest Journeys - Myanmar: No Fear

    51:23

For more than half a century, the country has lived in isolation, cut off from the outside world by a succession of some of the toughest dictatorships on the planet. The Burmese regard their country as a beautiful sleeping girl. Today she opens her eyes a little but wakes him up hard. The country lacks everything, the infrastructure has been neglected for many years. But the Burmese keep smiling. In the North West, in the most mountainous region of the country, getting around is an adventure. The mountains reach 3000 meters in altitude and some roads climb to more than 2000 meters. With his truck, twice his age, Khampi struggles. Despite everything, man faces the roads or rather the tracks, with courage and coolness. Khampi never gets angry, he keeps a smile at all times even when he misses to tip over. The word “fear” seems to have disappeared from his vocabulary. The state of the roads is a serious handicap for the populations, but it has enabled the country to retain its beauty, its authenticity and its traditions. Young Sokna carries on an ancient ritual, the Kiss of Death. Legend has it that by kissing the head of a king cobra three times, the women of the village will quickly become pregnant. In Naypeedaw, the megalomaniacal capital erected by the military junta, highways hold a sad record. One of the least frequented on the planet. The country also holds another record, with the most terrifying train in Asia. It crosses a viaduct more than 100 meters high. Without any security. Barely a few centimeters separate the travelers from the void. Travel to the heart of Burma far from the tourist trails. Réalisateur 1

The fairly unknown country of Laos still appears to be living a peaceful and sleepy life. With its small population, it still preserves most of its oriental traditions while trying to slowly conform to a fast changing world. The foggy and never ending eastern tip of the Himalayan Range and the Mekong river valleys give the country of Laos a character that has allowed past kingdoms to develop and flourish.

  • Mekong, the river of nine dragons

    12:11

The Mekong is one of the great rivers of the world. Born at 5000 meters altitude in the Tibetan Plateau and after crossing China, Burma, Thailand, enters in Laos and Cambodia to die in the China Sea, South of Vietnam.

Laos, Cambodia and southern Vietnam are the site where develops this episode, which aims to show the reality of these three countries and how the Mekong River is central to the life of its people.

Anam mountains, in Laos, welcoming Ekor Tribe. Until then the cameras have moved the program to capture the new year celebration, its leisurely way of life and respect for the environment in their daily work.

Following the path of spirituality that the river leaves behind in this place, are the temples pagodas and monasteries where youth are initiated into the monkhood and show the subtle balance between the religious world and the secular world.

In Cambodia you still can guess the splendor of the ancient Khmer empire in the refined ruins of a civilization that was able to create a complex system of canals and levees for intensive rice cultivation.

But the country is marked by a recent past of violence. The documentary features testimonies about the concentration camps that killed off a third of the population, and analyzes the problem of a land planted of bombs and mines that produce a staggering 10 amputations a day.

The delta of the nine dragons is the Vietnamese name given to the river where it flows into the South China Sea. Here 5000 channels carry water to the rice fields.

In Sang, the largest city in the delta, where the river dies, the Li family, wealthy fish merchants, offers insight into the hectic life of this population sustained by the Mekong River.

  • The Man Behind Laoss Most Powerful Logging Company

    17:36

Logging Lord (1996): ABC Australia profiles Laos's General Cheng, leader of the military, director of one of the country's biggest logging company BPKP, and one of Laos's most powerful figures.

    Subscribe to Journeyman here:

General Cheng remains one of Laos's most powerful figures for a multitude of reasons. He runs the Mountainous Area Development Company (BPKP), one of the biggest logging companies in Laos. While they face accusations of destroying the forest, the company itself claims it is the forest's guardian: It's not so high, 600,000 cubic metres - it's not too much. There's only one factory in Malaysia, only one factory, says one director on the company's production. Cheng also conveniently runs the Human Resettlement Programme, set up to relocate local people from the forest where his company logs. The programme exists to protect the forest, as the traditional slash and burn method used by locals is destroying the forest. Many locals have been moved to villages created by BPKP, but with no land, no job prospects, and no chance of selling the house given to them by BPKP, the future looks bleak. Cheng not only wields influence over business; he owns his own private zoo, which he claims protects vulnerable species affected by logging, and a school populated by village children taken from their families by the BPKP. ABC Australia interviews Cheng himself, and well as individuals involved in his various ventures, in a profile of man with ever expanding influence.

England's Most Beautiful Destination: The Lake District | Free Nature Documentary

For anyone looking for England's most beautiful view, here is where to strike gold: the Lake District. Framed between gently rising mountains of England's northwest, lay dozens of lakes with crystal clear water.
Apart from the magnificent view, at the Honister Pass the brave at heart can experience the breathtaking excitement of the mountains.
Visitors hover over the gorge on a steel cable. The zip wire is the at-traction of the mountain, which houses an old, yet still active slate mine. The Lake District has profited from slate for many years and the majority of the roofs of the region are covered with it. In the old town-ship of Grasmere, the grey of the houses contrasts with the green of the landscape - a wonderfully idyllic spot.

On the western border of the Lake District, Muncaster Castle stands out between the mountains. The undead are said to walk through the walls after sunset and visitors have told of the inexplicable wailing of a child, seemingly emanating from the walls.
The Penningtons have lived here since 1208 - and with them, their strange company.

In this video we kayak along the Nam Ou River through Nong Khiaw in the North of Laos. Unfortunately for us the weather didn't hold up so we couldn't keep exploring to reach the smaller villages, but this is possible if you want to explore more!
