  • Looking for Life on Mars | NOVA | PBS

    54:03

Follow along as NASA launches the Mars 2020 Mission, perhaps the most ambitious hunt yet for signs of ancient life on Mars.

The spacecraft will blaze into the Martian atmosphere at some 12,000 miles per hour and attempt to lower the Perseverance Rover in the rocky Jezero Crater, home to a dried-up river delta scientists think could have harbored life. Perseverance will comb the area for signs of life and collect samples for possible return to Earth. Traveling onboard is a four-pound helicopter that will conduct a series of test flights—the first on another planet.

During its journey, Perseverance will also test technology designed to produce oxygen from the Martian atmosphere, in hopes that the gas could be used for fuel—or for humans to breathe—on future missions.

    Lyrics

    It's a God-awful small affair
To the girl with the mousy hair
But her mummy is yelling no
And her daddy has told her to go
But her friend is nowhere to be seen
Now she walks through her sunken dream
To the seat with the clearest view
And she's hooked to the silver screen
But the film is a saddening bore
For she's lived it ten times or more
She could spit in the eyes of fools
As they ask her to focus on
Sailors fighting in the dance hall
Oh man, look at those cavemen go
    It's the freakiest show
Take a look at the lawman
    Beating up the wrong guy
Oh man, wonder if he'll ever know
He's in the best selling show
    Is there life on Mars?
    It's on America's tortured brow
That Mickey Mouse has grown up a cow
Now the workers have struck for fame
    'Cause Lennon's on sale again
See the mice in their million hordes
From Ibiza to the Norfolk Broads
Rule Britannia is out of bounds
To my mother, my dog, and clowns
But the film is a saddening bore
'Cause I wrote it ten times or more
It's about to be writ again
As I ask you to focus on
Sailors fighting in the dance hall
Oh man, look at those cavemen go
    It's the freakiest show
Take a look at the lawman
    Beating up the wrong guy

  • Searching for Signs of Life on Mars

    4:14

ESA's (The European Space Agency) ExoMars rover is headed to the red planet in 2020, on a mission to search for signs of past or present life. One of its primary tools in this endeavor is MOMA, the Mars Organic Molecule Analyzer. MOMA is a sophisticated suite of technologies that squeezes a lab full of chemistry equipment into a package the size of a toaster oven. Its mass spectrometer subsystem and main electronics were built at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md, and mark the first use of a linear ion trap on another planet - a leap forward in the search for life beyond Earth.

  • NASA Rover Just Made A STRANGE Discovery On Mars!

    11:43

Mars has captivated humans since we first set eyes on it as a star-like object in the night sky. In the 1960s, humans set out to discover what the red planet has to teach us. Ever since that, with hundreds of worlds in the solar system, Mars became one of the most explored bodies. It is a dynamic planet with seasons, polar ice caps, canyons, extinct volcanoes, and evidence that it was even more active in the past. And most important of all, it might be habitual.
Even though the possibilities of ancient life on Mars appear to be high, the argument that we should explore the Red Planet because it is a possibly livable world loses steam when we consider that Mars isn't the only potentially habitable world in our vicinity.
To mention a few potentially livable water-ice worlds in our solar system, scientists have tracked spurting water at Saturn's moon Enceladus and Jupiter's moon Europa. Also, a highly contentious discovery of phosphine in Venus's atmosphere sparked speculation about life on the hellish planet, but experts think that's a reach based on current evidence. But still, the traces of life have been found.
The question here is of why. Why just keep going back to Mars? With all these missions, scientists gathered so much information about the planet but they kept going back. Space.com states that according to scientists, there is something really special about Mars, so special that three new missions have arrived at or are nearing the Red Planet. With the planets aligning for launch possibilities every two years or so, Mars is close enough to be visited reasonably easily with current technology. Its atmosphere is difficult to land in and navigate through, but unlike Venus, it will not crush or melt your spacecraft on the surface.

  • Beginning A New Life on Mars! - Ep. 1 - Surviving Mars Gameplay

    33:03

Welcome to Surviving Mars Part 1! Surviving Mars is a City building strategy game like cities skylines where you build up a new Life on Mars! ► Preorder Surviving Mars here: ► Watch more Surviving Mars Gameplay:

    - - - - -

    Surviving Mars gameplay overview:

Welcome Home! The time has come to stake your claim on the Red Planet and build the first functioning human colonies on Mars! All you need are supplies, oxygen, decades of training, experience with sandstorms, and a can-do attitude to discover the purpose of those weird black cubes that appeared out of nowhere. With a bit of sprucing up, this place is going to be awesome!

Surviving Mars is a sci-fi city builder all about colonizing Mars and surviving the process. Choose a space agency for resources and financial support before determining a location for your colony. Build domes and infrastructure, research new possibilities and utilize drones to unlock more elaborate ways to shape and expand your settlement. Cultivate your own food, mine minerals or just relax by the bar after a hard day’s work. Most important of all, though, is keeping your colonists alive. Not an easy task on a strange new planet.

There will be challenges to overcome. Execute your strategy and improve your colony’s chances of survival while unlocking the mysteries of this alien world. Are you ready? Mars is waiting for you.

    - - - - -

    Surviving Mars Gameplay Overview:

►Building on a planet not fit for human life challenges you to build a smart, functional colony. Bad planning isn’t about traffic jams, it’s about survival of your colonists. You really don’t want rolling blackouts in a city constructed in a place without oxygen.

    ►Individually simulated colonists:
Each colonist is a unique individual with problems and strengths that influence the needs and behavior of the other colonists. Things can get really interesting if your chief scientists develops alcoholism after one too many long nights in the lab.

    ►Futuristic Space Dome construction:
Retro-futuristic super structures housing colonists, factories and commercial buildings with their own “neighborhood personality.” Create colonies that value science over everything else, while tired workers drink their pay away at a local bar, or attempt a utopia among the stars.

    ►Exploration of Mars’ secrets:
Inspired by the classic sci-fi of Asimov and Clarke, Surviving Mars holds many secrets. During each playthrough players may encounter one of Mars’ individually crafted mysteries. Uncovering these secrets might bring your colony great fortune, or terrible ruin. What is that sphere that manifested itself outside colony HUB B, and is it friendly?

    ►Randomized research tree:
Combine static and random research through experimentation, which allows for a different experience for each journey through the game. Attain new scientific breakthroughs by exploring the uncharted terrain of Mars's surface.

    ►Unique retro-futuristic aesthetic:

Are we alone? This question, so simple at first glance, is in fact of incomparable importance. The search for extraterrestrial life has always been one of the most important aspects of modern space exploration. As is well known, however, we have not yet been able to discover extraterrestrial life forms or even to make contact with them. If one looks at the research results of the recent past, it seems as if the indications for the existence of alien life are becoming more and more solid. In today's video, you can find out what the experts have already discovered and what groundbreaking discoveries were made on Mars a few months ago!

They turned out to be concretions of hematite - which means they were grown in wet environments with dissolved iron. Wet means water FYI. Both rovers found a variety of other geological signs of past water activity, really solidifying the picture of Mars' much more liquid past. Both rovers were supposed to shut down after around 90 days as Martian dust accumulated on their solar panels, cutting of their power supply.

  • Understanding Life On Mars?

    8:25

There weren't many artists in rock music more unique than David Bowie. His work spanned a variety of styles, and he brought his own voice to each one. His passing two years ago was a great loss for the art world, but at least he left us with over 40 years of music to appreciate, so to commemorate one of the titans of the genre, we're looking at one of his first big hits, Life On Mars?. It's a really cool piece of harmony that combines advanced devices with iconic progressions to create an unforgettable, ambient soundscape.

  • Is There Life on Mars? The Story of the Search for Life on Mars

You know what would be exciting? Finding life on Mars. What is the best evidence we’ve seen for life on the Red Planet?

    Chad Weber - weber.chad@gmail.com

Perhaps the most important question we can possible ask is, “are we alone in the Universe?”.

And so far, the answer has been, “I don’t know”. I mean, it’s a huge Universe, with hundreds of billions of stars in the Milky Way, and now we learn there are trillions of galaxies in the Universe.

Is there life closer to home? What about in the Solar System?

There are a few existing places we could look for life close to home. Really any place in the Solar System where there’s liquid water. Wherever we find water on Earth, we find life, so it make sense to search for places with liquid water in the Solar System.

I know, I know, life could take all kinds of wonderful forms. Enlightened beings of pure energy, living among us right now. Or maybe space whales on Titan that swim through lakes of ammonia. Beep boop silicon robot lifeforms that calculate the wasted potential of our lives.

Sure, we could search for those things, and we will. Later. We haven’t even got this basic problem done yet. Earth water life? Check! Other water life? No idea.

It turns out, water’s everywhere in the Solar System. In comets and asteroids, on the icy moons of Jupiter and Saturn, especially Europa or Enceladus.

Or you could look for life on Mars.

Mars is similar to Earth in many ways, however, it’s smaller, has less gravity, a thinner atmosphere. And unfortunately, it’s bone dry. There are vast polar caps of water ice, but they’re frozen solid.

There appears to be briny liquid water underneath the surface, and it occasionally spurts out onto the surface.

Because it’s close and relatively easy to explore, it’s been the place scientists have gone looking for past or current life.

Researchers tried to answer the question with NASA’s twin Viking Landers, which touched down in 1976. The landers were both equipped with three biology experiments. The researchers weren’t kidding around, they were going to nail this question: is there life on Mars?

In the first experiment, they took soil samples from Mars, mixed in a liquid solution with organic and inorganic compounds, and then measured what chemicals were released.

In a second experiment, they put Earth organic compounds into Martian soil, and saw carbon dioxide released.

In the third experiment, they heated Martian soil and saw organic material come out of the soil.

Three experiments, and stuff happened in all three. Stuff! Pretty exciting, right? Unfortunately, there were equally plausible non-biological explanations for each of the results. The astrobiology community wasn’t convinced, and they still fight in brutal cage matches to this day.

It was ambitious, but inconclusive. The worst kind of conclusive.

Researchers found more inconclusive evidence in 1994. Ugh, there’s that word again.

They were studying a meteorite that fell in Antarctica, but came from Mars, based on gas samples taken from inside the rock.

They thought they found evidence of fossilized bacterial life inside the meteorite. But again, there were too many explanations for how the life could have gotten in there from here on Earth. Life found a way… to burrow into a rock from Mars.

NASA learned a powerful lesson from this experience. If they were going to prove life on Mars, they had to go about it carefully and conclusively, building up evidence that had no controversy.

The Spirit and Opportunity Rovers were an example of building up this case cautiously. They were sent to Mars in 2004 to find evidence of water. Not water today, but water in the ancient past. Old water Over the course of several years of exploration, both rovers turned up multiple lines of evidence there was water on the surface of Mars in the ancient past.

They found concretions, tiny pebbles containing iron-rich hematite that forms on Earth in water. They found the mineral gypsum; again, something that’s deposited by water on Earth.

NASA’s Curiosity Rover took this analysis to the next level, arriving in 2012 and searching for evidence that water was on Mars for vast periods of time; long enough for Martian life to evolve.
