  • COVID-19: Loss of Taste! ????

    1:24

A significant portion of people who test positive for COVID-19 experience a sudden loss of smell or taste. People usually notice the loss of smell, but because smell is necessary to taste flavour, the symptoms are often connected.

The reason this happens is not fully understood yet; scientists believe that the virus causes an inflammatory reaction inside the nose, leading to a loss of the olfactory – or smell – neurons. The loss of taste is trickier; we have little idea about how the coronavirus affects taste.

Many people still haven’t gotten their senses back! If you needed another reason to keep being careful, here it is. Let’s keep doing our part to prevent the spread of the COVID-19. Stay home, continue to enjoy your senses. ????????????

0:13 Causes of a loss of smell
1:18 What to do for a loss of smell
2:22 How to bulletproof your immune system

In this video, we’re going to talk about a loss of smell and what you can do about it.

There are multiple types of loss of smell:
    • Anosmia - Total loss of smell
    • Dysosmia - Distorted sense of smell
    • Hyposmia - Reduced ability to smell

The potential causes for a loss of smell include:
    • Infections (especially covid-19)
    • Injury
    • Allergies

The key trace mineral that supports smell is zinc. If you have a zinc deficiency, you can lose your sense of smell. If zinc doesn’t help, what can you do?

Well, let’s talk about what’s involved in your sense of smell. The olfactory nerve or bulb is the brain tissue responsible for processing the sense of smell. You have around 10 million receptors in each sinus that communicate with the olfactory bulb and the brain.

If there is an injury to the olfactory bulb due to trauma, infection, or allergies, this can lead to problems with your smell.

The best nutrients to support the olfactory bulb are:
    • Zinc
    • Vitamin B1 (benfotiamine)
    • Alpha-lipoic acid

Restoring the loss of taste sensation by using garlic, ginger, lemon, cinnamon, apple cider vinegar and by using oil pulling and by using castor oil. Castor oil has got a very good anti oxidant, anti microbial and anti inflammatory agent. By putting two drops of castor oil into the nostrils before going to the bed may increase the olfactory functions. Patients may sense the taste as well as the smell of the better taste sensation. Also by quitting alcoholism, tobacco chewing, by treating the deficiencies and restoring gum deficiencies like periodontal diseases, by restoring the cavities and also treating poor oral hygiene conditions by doing the scaling we can restore the taste sensation, by using zinc supplements and zinc rich foods like nuts and beans. According to a new study, a simple at-home taste test could be a gamechanger in predicting COVID-19 duration and symptom severity. The author of the study, Dr. Henry Barham sits down with Dr. Sanjay Juneja to discuss the exciting results, how the science works, and what it could mean for preventing serious complications and spread of COVID-19 and future diseases.

Dr. Barham and his team were interested in the Tas2R receptor, which can be expressed when tasting bitterness. With this simple taste test, they were able to separate the study participants into three groups: Super-Tasters, Tasters, and Non-Tasters. They found that 85% of those requiring hospitalization were in the Non-Taster group, while 0% were in the Super-Taster group. Of the 15% in the Taster group, the youngest person was 69 and the average age was 74, which is indicative of the receptor wearing off as people get older. The study also found that the taste expression was strongly connected to the duration of symptoms. On average, Super-Tasters experienced 5 days of symptoms, Tasters experienced 13.5 days of symptoms, and Non-Tasters experienced 23.7 days of symptoms.

How accurate were the results? The P value is the chance that the results happened by coincidence, with anything less than 0.05 being statistically significant. The P value with this study was as low as it can be: 0.001 (listed as 0.01).

These results could explain why some seemingly healthy young people experience worse symptoms than others and why treatments including hydroxychloroquine showed promise (because it activated the Tas2R receptor.) According to Dr. Barham, this taste test that is affordable, scalable, and very accurate could help people gain a better understanding of their potential complication risk from COVID-19 and other diseases and variants.

How To Fix Loss Of Taste - Foods For Impaired Taste

In this video we discuss how to fix loss of taste. It sucks, I know. But today I'm providing some tips on beneficial foods that will help to fix loss of taste whether you're suffering from flavor fatigue, or are sick.

If you're having concerns over loss of taste, or smell, these foods should help you get back on the right track.

    Berry & Brandy Cream Recipe:

1 1⁄2 cups strawberries (frozen, but thawed, chopped and kept cold)
    2 tablespoons raspberry preserves
    2 tablespoons honey
    6 ounces whipping cream
    3 ounces Baileys Irish Cream
    1 ounce brandy
3 tablespoons pecans (finely chopped and divided per prep)

In a blender, combine 1st 6 ingredients and blend until berries are fully pureed and mixture is creamy.
Gently fold in 2 tbsp of chopped pecans and divide mixture among 8 small serving glasses approximately 4 ounces in size.
Top each serving with a few pieces of the remaining 1 tbsp of chopped pecans and chill for at least 1 hour or until ready to serve.

NOTES: The yield is 8 3-oz servings as a palate cleanser after a savory course of an elegant meal. As a light dessert, I suggest 6 4-0z servings w/ a small berry, scattered choc shavings, a mint or a cookie to dress it up.
