    On march 1 2020 14:52 I was exactly 1 billion seconds old. To celebrate I build this machine that visualizes the number googol. That's a 1 with a hundred zeros. A number that's bigger than the atoms in the known universe. This machine has a gear reduction of 1 to 10 a hundred times. In order to get the last gear to turn once you'll need to spin the first one a google amount around. Or better said you'll need more energy than the entire known universe has to do that. That boggles my mind. ⁣

    The version in the video is a prototype and cannot run for to long BUT I'm making a version that could run for years/decades. If you are interested don't hesitate to contact me via email.

    How fast can you rotate a Lego wheel using gears and a Lego motor or two? Last time we got to 2850 RPM (2950 with a drill). Now, let's remove the tire that caused a lot of vibrations and try again. Also test two types of lubrication: canola vegetable oil and silicone spray.

    In this project I made a little Googol with 3d printed gears.

    •The modules of the gears I use in the project are 1 mm. Pinion gear 12 teeth, corresponding large gear 61 teeth. The gear ratio in each stage is 5 and there are 15 stages in total. Total gear ratio is 5^15 so 30, 517,578,125:1. That's really a huge ratio. The drill I used in the video below is 550 rpm and this drill works 106 years for the last gear to start rotating.
    •The bearings have 608zz and 8mm inner diameter.
    •I used PLA + as a material and set the nozzle temperature 205 degrees and the plate temperature 40 degrees. I used Simplify3d software as slicer.

  • Extreme Reduction - 11 million to one gearing


    More OskarPuzzle at Buy at Copyright (c) 2015, M. Oskar van Deventer. Extreme Reduction is an ultra-compact gearing system with an extreme reduction. The gear ratio is 11.373.076 : 1, that is, over eleven million to one!!! That extreme reduction is achieved in three stages.
    -Stage 1: Two sets of planetary gears with a reduction of 24 : 1 and 25 : 1, respectively.
    -Stage 2: Two subtractions, 26×26-25×27=1 and 25×25-24×26=1, respectively.
    -Stage 3: Another subtraction, namely (25×26+1×25)-(24×27+1×26)=1.

    The gear ratio of this mechanism scales to the 5th power with the number of gear teeth. That is, for ×2 times the number of teeth, you get ×32 times the gear ratio. Here are some exaple gear ratios:
    -Teeth = 4, gear ratio = 2.185
    -Teeth = 9, gear ratio = 87.220
    -Teeth = 16, gear ratio = 1.322.209
    -Teeth = 25, gear ratio = 11.373.076
    -Teeth = 36, gear ratio = 67.320.649
    -Teeth = 49, gear ratio = 305.880.100
    -Teeth = 64, gear ratio = 1.141.624.705
    The number of teeth of a gear needs to be an integer square plus or minus one because of the subtracting mechanism.

    Whereas high reduction radios are typically achieved with worm gears, a planetary gear system like this is much more compact. The gears have a limited number of teeth, which makes the system very robust. Also unlike worm gears, this planetary gears system is coaxial, which makes it easier to place.

    The application of this type of extreme reduction gears is unclear. A patient person could use it to move a heavy train locomotive with a dental dril.

  • Building a Lego-powered Submarine 2.0 - magnetic couplings


    This RC sub has magnetic couplings to transmit torque through the walls. No need to drill holes = no leaks. At the end I test it in a swimming pool. Enjoy!

    Differences to the first sub
    -rectangular hull (need flat walls for magnetic couplings)
    -snap-and-lock lid (more reliable, less leakage)
    -bigger motors, more motors, more propellers
    -depth control using propellers (IMO more accurate compared to a syringe ballast tank)
    -lead pellets for ballast (easier to adjust, both shape and weight, compared to steel plates)

  • Stealing a Key Ring with Teleoperated Lego


    The Lego vehicle is lowered to the floor from an open ventilation window. After that it is operated remotely using a PS4 controller and a tablet that shows live video from an onboard camera, with night vision. The vehicle is able to lift a smaller vehicle onto a table to pick up a key ring. Enjoy!

    I've finally started the tracked vehicle project! This week I had to be out in a trip for two days so not much time to work on the video but I'm already printing a massive amount of parts for next week video.
