    The Mars Helicopter aims to make the first powered flight on another planet when it takes off on Mars as part of the Mars 2020 mission. I learned a lot getting to visit the drone right before it was mounted on the rover.

    How do you fly in 1% of Earth's atmosphere:
    Have large rotors (they are 1.2m in diameter) and spin them very fast, around 2500 RPM (5x the speed of a helicopter on Earth).

    Plus the aircraft has to be light:
    The Mars helicopter weighs in at 1.8kg or around the same as a laptop. Every piece had to be stripped down for weight. Instead of using aerogel for insulation, the craft makes use of CO2 gaps between components. Even aerogel was too heavy!

    One of the major challenges is surviving the Martian night:
    Temperatures plunge to -80C to -100C so two thirds of the craft's power is actually used to keep its electronics warm. Only one third is used for flying. The estimated flight time is 90 seconds.

    The craft can't be driven remotely, it will have to fly autonomously, using its own sensor suite to determine how to fly. The round trip 20 minute delay with Earth means steering the craft from mission control would be impossible.

    NASA's Ingenuity Mars Helicopter will make history's first attempt at powered flight on another planet next spring. It is riding with the agency's next mission to Mars (the Mars 2020 Perseverance rover) as it launches from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station later this summer. Perseverance, with Ingenuity attached to its belly, will land on Mars February 18, 2021.

    As a technology demonstration, Ingenuity is testing a new capability for the first time: showing controlled flight is possible in the very thin Martian atmosphere. If successful, Ingenuity could lead to an aerial dimension to space exploration, aiding both robots and humans in the future.

    This is live from the surface of Mars! NASA Mars 2020 spacecraft with Perseverance Rover and the Ingenuity helicopter drone will touch down in Jezero crater on Mars. Mars 2020 rover, named Perseverance, will explore the Martian surface and seek to answer questions about the potential of ancient life on Mars. The Perseverance rover was designed with help from Curiosity's engineering team, as both are quite similar. Engineers redesigned the Perseverance rover wheels to be more robust than Curiosity's wheels, which have sustained some damage. The rover will have thicker, more durable aluminum wheels, with reduced width and a greater diameter (52.5 cm (20.7 in)) than Curiosity's 50 cm (20 in) wheel. The aluminum wheels are covered with cleats for traction and curved titanium spokes for springy support. The combination of the larger instrument suite, new Sampling and Caching System, and modified wheels makes Perseverance (1025 kg) heavier than its predecessor Curiosity (899 kg), by 14%. The rover will include a five-jointed robotic arm measuring 2.1 m (6 ft 11 in) long. The arm will be used in combination with a turret to analyze geologic samples from the Martian surface. A Multi-Mission Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator (MMRTG), left over as a backup part for Curiosity during its construction, will power the rover. The generator has a mass of 45 kg (99 lb) and contains 4.8 kg (11 lb) of plutonium dioxide as the source of steady supply of heat that is converted to electricity. The electrical power generated is approximately 110 watts at launch with little decrease over the mission time. Two lithium-ion rechargeable batteries are included to meet peak demands of rover activities when the demand temporarily exceeds the MMRTG's steady electrical output levels. The MMRTG offers a 14-year operational lifetime, and it was provided to NASA by the United States Department of Energy. Unlike solar panels, the MMRTG provides engineers with significant flexibility in operating the rover's instruments even at night and during dust storms, and through the winter season.

    Ingenuity is a robotic helicopter that will test the technology to scout interesting targets for study on Mars, and help plan the best driving route for Perseverance. The aircraft will be deployed from the rover's deck, and is expected to fly up to five times during its 30-day test campaign early in the mission. Each flight will take no more than three minutes, at altitudes ranging from 3 m to 10 m above the ground, but it could potentially cover a maximum distance of about 600 m (2,000 ft) per flight. It will use autonomous control and communicate with Perseverance directly after each landing. If it works as expected, NASA will be able to build on the design for future Mars missions.

  • NASAs bold plan to fly a helicopter on Mars in 2021

    On February 18, 2021, the Perseverance rover will reach Mars. The rover is not alone. It is carrying the Mars Helicopter Ingenuity. The 1.8 kg helicopter is a technology demonstration of aerial missions on Mars. Flying on the red planet won't be an easy task because it has a rocky terrain that can cause trouble while landing. Another important challenge is the thin atmosphere of Mars.

    In general, a helicopter on earth is accompanied by a set of spinning wings called blades or rotors on its top. As the blades spin, they create a force that allows the helicopter to push the air below it and then rise high into the sky. However, the atmosphere on Mars is quite different from ours.

    The air surrounding the Red Planet is just 1 percent the density of the Earth’s atmosphere. Now with so little air to move around, achieving lift on Mars will indeed be a challenging task. Although Mars' gravity is just 38% of Earth's gravity, it will somehow assist the chopper during its flight. Even with that assistance, we won't be able to fly a vehicle on Mars by using the same technologies, that we use to fly a helicopter on our planet.

    To overcome the atmosphere related issues, the engineering team had come up with a unique structural design for the chopper. Since the atmosphere on Mars is fragile, to achieve lift-off, the chopper has to push a lot of air downwards, and the only way to do this is to make the helicopter's blades spin as fast as possible. Typically, a helicopter on Earth has its blades spinning at about 500 rpm, but Ingenuity is designed in a way to make its blades reach a spinning speed of about 2,300 to 2,500 rpm. That's about 5 times faster than a typical helicopter on Earth.

    Because of the 20-minute delay of signals, the helicopter cannot be controlled from Earth. Ingenuity has been installed with some autonomy sensors, including gyros, accelerometers, cameras, altimeters, and inclinometers, which will guide it in making smart decisions throughout its Mars voyage, thereby assisting Ingenuity to fly autonomously on a lonely world.

    The helicopter Ingenuity is a high-risk project, and if it turns out to be successful, it will guide us to take up advanced aerial projects on the red planet. In the future, helicopters on Mars missions could act as robotic scouts, that won't only view the terrain from above that rovers cannot access, but would also serve as spacecraft carrying scientific instruments. They might even be able to help future astronauts someday to explore the red planet.

    In this video, we take a look at the major event that happened on 2/18/2021. The Perseverance Rover has successfully landed on the surface of Mars! Following the event, NASA released the first images from Jezero crater, and announced where exactly it landed within the landing zone. Now that the Perseverance Rover is on Mars, what comes next?

    The first few days are primarily focused on self-checkups. Making sure the subsystems are operating, and that the instruments can still function properly. The rover will also be deploying the Mast, and taking more images of the surrounding location on Mars. This will help the team understand mode about the surrounding environment, and decide where to go next. During the first week, there will be short test drives of the rover, and the robotic arm will be moved to make sure everything is good for exploring. After the test runs, the following couple of weeks will be focused on navigating across Mars to the flight-zones. There, over the course of a Month or two, the Ingenuity Helicopter will perform test flights on the surface of Mars! After the test flights, getting into approximately 3 months after landing, Percy will make its way to the first region of interest to focus on sample collection and studying the river delta.

    The Mars helicopter, ‘Ingenuity’, along with the new rover ‘Perseverance’ are scheduled to land on February 18th 2021. The local time on Mars will be approximately 3.45pm at Jezero Crater. Engineers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab have stated the best time to fly Ingenuity is around 11am local time, and flying at night will be strictly forbidden.

    Today’s video will feature all you need to know about flying on Mars, how Martian time zones are calculated and why flying at night is a bad idea. We hope you enjoy.

    There is one standard time on Mars, developed by astronomers in the 1830’s. It’s called Mars Coordinated Time, or MTC for short. All of the rovers have offset times which correspond to MTC, which is known as the ‘Prime Meridian’.

    So why does this matter? Why is it so important that we know the local time on Mars?

    Just like on Earth, depending on where the Sun is in the sky, things change. Temperature, visibility, wind speeds, and even the density of the atmosphere.

    Firstly, temperature variations on Mars are wild. In the Martian summer near the equator, temperatures can reach a cosy 20 Degrees Celsius. However, during the night temperatures can plummet to -73 Degrees Celsius. At these frosty temperatures, critical mechanisms on board the rovers can fail. For this reason, most Martian landers have built in heating systems, to survive the night time extremes.

    This issue is what led to the demise of the Opportunity rover. After experiencing a global Martian dust storm which blocked it’s solar panels, the battery was expended. During the following days and nights, the heating system was unable to power up, meaning the extreme temperatures irreversibly damaged the rover’s internal components.

    NASA have avoided this problem in future rovers, using nuclear power in rovers from Curiosity onwards.
    The Mars helicopter ‘Ingenuity’, which we are nicknaming as ‘Genie’, has a multitude of other problems to answer. Unfortunately, using nuclear power would be too heavy for flying on Mars, so this craft uses solar.

  • Mars Helicopter Attached to Perseverance Rover for July Launch

    With the launch period of NASA's Mars 2020 Perseverance rover opening in 14 weeks, final preparations of the spacecraft continue at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. In the past week, the assembly, test and launch operations team completed important milestones, fueling the descent stage — also known as the sky crane — and attaching the Mars Helicopter, which will be the first aircraft in history to attempt power-controlled flight on another planet.

    STORY -

    After the descent stage fueling, the system that will deliver the Mars Helicopter to the surface of the Red Planet was integrated with Perseverance. The helicopter, which weighs 4 pounds (1.8 kilograms) and features propellers 4 feet (1.2 meters) in diameter, is cocooned within the delivery system. In one of the first steps in the day-long process on April 6, technicians and engineers made 34 electrical connections between the rover, the helicopter and its delivery system on the rover's belly. After confirming data and commands could be sent and received, they attached the delivery system to the rover.

    Finally, the team confirmed the helicopter could receive an electrical charge from the rover. Before being deployed onto the surface of Jezero Crater, the Mars Helicopter will rely on the rover for power. Afterward, it will generate its own electrical power through a solar panel located above its twin counter-rotating propellers.

    The helicopter will remain encapsulated on the rover's belly for the next year and will be deployed around the beginning of May — roughly two-and-a-half months after Perseverance's landing. Once the rover drives about 330 feet (100 meters) away and the helicopter undergoes an extensive systems check, it will execute a flight-test campaign for up to 30 days.

    The Perseverance rover is a robotic scientist weighing 2,260 pounds (1,025 kilograms). It will search for signs of past microbial life, characterize the planet's climate and geology, collect samples for future return to Earth and pave the way for human exploration of the Red Planet. No matter what day Perseverance launches during its July 17-Aug. 5 launch period, it will land on Mars' Jezero Crater on Feb. 18, 2021.

    NASA's Perseverance rover landed on Mars on February 18, 2021. It survived its most challenging part of the mission: the entry, descent, and landing, also known as the seven minutes of terror. Moments after landing, Perseverence sent back its first images of the Red Planet. The rover will now begin its experiments. Here are some of the mind-blowing things it will do on Mars.

    Make Oxygen: The rover has been equipped with an instrument called MOXIE. This fancy abbreviation stands for Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment. MOXIE will collect atmospheric carbon dioxide and convert it into oxygen and carbon monoxide. It's a technological demonstration that will help future astronauts on Mars.

    Study Weather Patterns: Violent dust storms rage on Mars from to time. We have already lost a rover named Opportunity because of a dust storm. Perseverance has a suite of electronic sensors onboard called MEDA ( Mars Environmental Dynamics Analyzer). It will study the Martian weather that will further help us in crewed missions to Mars.

    Search For Ancient Life: Perseverance has landed in the Jezero crater, a wide basin that was once flooded with water, according to scientists. If life existed on Mars, Perseverance has all the tools to search for it.

    Deploy Ingenuity: Finally, Perseverance will deploy the Mars Helicopter Ingenuity. This will be the first powered flight on another planet.

    Like a big boar rasping in the ground, the clumsy robotic geologist pokes his head through the jagged rocks as dust devils begin to stir on the horizon, and the walls of Jezero Crater seem to invite him on a long gallop across the plain of Isidis Planitia.

    But Perseverance is not alone this time... unlike the robots that in past decades have preceded him across the sands of Mars, and then slowly died out in complete solitude, this time the rover has someone or something to keep him company. A few meters higher, in fact, there is a small drone that monitors the moves, just like one of those birds that live in symbiosis with the buffalo of the African Serengeti.
    In the meantime, the sun comes out of the fog, while the two proceed in silence, exchanging every now and then a few glances; in a glitter of crossed cameras. On Mars, another day of work has begun.

    What we have just described could be one of the many moments of that daily routine that will soon concern the stay on Mars of a couple of robots very different from each other, both in tasks and in size.
    The Mars 2020 mission is in fact about to release on the red planet the rover Perseverance, and it will do so on February 18 at about 21:00 Greenwich Mean Time after a journey that lasted 6 months and a half.
    We can undoubtedly say that never before man has sent on Mars a medium so important from the point of view of innovation. Among its peculiarities, there are real technological bets that, despite being considered high risk by the same agency, will provide important data even if they fail.
    Among the many noteworthy innovations, our attention has been captured by the Ingenuity, the first instrument intended to fly in the atmosphere of another planet. Although for the truth already in 1985 two balloons released by Soviet missions Vega 1 and Vega 2 had crossed the skies of Venus collecting meteorological data.
    But that of Ingenuity will undoubtedly be the first controlled powered flight ever attempted on another world.

    The Martian helicopter is defined as a technological demonstration highly risky and innovative at the same time, thanks to which it will try for the first time to test a new approach to the exploration of Mars.
    No additional technological instrumentation and no scientific objective, the interest is entirely engineering and is intended to demonstrate that even in the thin Martian atmosphere is possible to fly.
    Its development began eight years ago at the Autonomous Systems Division of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, with the prospect of realizing something daring, since the Martian atmospheric and gravity conditions make it actually difficult to fly a helicopter drone of this kind. Difficult yes, but not impossible, and it is precisely from this assumption that was born the confidence towards the project bringing it to full realization.
    Although it may not seem so, the design of this small aircraft has involved the most diverse areas of aerospace engineering. It has not been easy at all, in fact, to integrate in such a light device the numerous devices and sensors able to obviate the problems such as low atmospheric density, intense cold, weak gravity and the impossibility of an assisted guide...
    To do this the NASA team used the Space Simulator of JPL, a vacuum chamber about 8 meters wide, from which the Earth's atmosphere was replaced. with carbon dioxide, the main ingredient of the Martian atmosphere. It was then developed a mechanical gravitational exhaust system designed to simulate gravity on Mars, and then several test flights were completed. The real test, however, will be in the field and NASA is ready for any eventuality.

    The Mars Helicopter, Ingenuity, is a technology demonstration to test powered flight on another world for the first time. It hitched a ride to Mars on the Perseverance rover. Once the team finds a suitable helipad location, the rover will release Ingenuity to perform a series of test flights over a 30-Martian-day experimental window beginning sometime in the spring.

    For the first flight, the helicopter will take off a few feet from the ground, hover in the air for about 20 to 30 seconds, and land. That will be a major milestone: the very first powered flight in the extremely thin atmosphere of Mars. After that, the team will attempt additional experimental flights of incrementally farther distance and greater altitude. After the helicopter completes its technology demonstration, Perseverance will continue its scientific mission.

    The Mars Helicopter, Ingenuity, is a small, autonomous aircraft that will be carried to the surface of the Red Planet attached to the
    belly of the Perseverance rover. Its mission is experimental in nature and completely independent of the rover’s science mission.
    In the months after landing, the helicopter will be placed on the surface to test – for the first time ever – powered flight in the thin
    Martian air. Its performance during these experimental test flights will help inform decisions relating to considering small helicopters for future Mars missions, where they could perform in a support role as robotic scouts, surveying terrain from above, When NASA’s Perseverance rover lands on February 18, 2021, it will be carrying a passenger onboard: the first helicopter ever designed to fly in the thin Martian air.
    or as full standalone science craft carrying instrument payloads. Taking to the air would give scientists a new perspective on a region’s geology and even allow them to peer into areas that are too steep or slippery to send
    a rover. In the distant future, they might even help astronauts explore Mars.

    The project is solely a demonstration of technology; it is not designed to support the Mars 2020/Perseverance mission, which is searching for signs of ancient life and collecting samples of rock and sediment in tubes for potential return to Earth by later missions.

    Key Objectives
    1. Prove powered flight in the thin atmosphere of Mars. The Red Planet has lower gravity (about one third that of Earth) but its atmosphere is just 1% as
    thick, making it much harder to generate lift.
    2. Demonstrate miniaturized flying technology. That
    requires shrinking down onboard computers, electronics and other parts so that the helicopter is light enough to take off.
    3. Operate autonomously. Ingenuity will use solar power to charge its batteries and rely on internal heaters to maintain operational temperatures during the cold Martian nights. After receiving commands from Earth relayed through the rover, each test flight is performed without real-time input from Mars Helicopter mission controllers.

  • Nasa reveals how HELICOPTER could explore surface of Mars - Daily Mail

    Nasa scientists in California are testing a concept Mars helicopter (illustration shown main). The small device would be launched to the red planet with another rover (Curiosity shown inset). It would scout locations ahead for the rover to travel to and explore. And it would be able to travel much greater distances than the rover. Each day it could fly for up to three minutes and cover half a kilometre. But it will have to contend with difficult conditions on the red planet. Nasa has not revealed when the helicopter could go to Mars.

    NASA's Ingenuity Mars Helicopter will make history's first attempt at powered, controlled flight on another planet next spring. Before the project was approved by NASA to ride with the agency's next mission to Mars (the Mars 2020 Perseverance rover), the Mars Helicopter team had to prove powered flight in a Martian atmosphere was possible.

    This video highlights three important milestones in the flight-testing program of the Mars helicopter system. The testing took place in the 25-foot space simulation chamber at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California where the Martian atmosphere was reproduced.

    ¿Cómo vuela con el 1% de la atmósfera de la Tierra?
    Tiene rotores grandes (1,2 m de diámetro) y los hacen girar muy rápido, alrededor de 2500 RPM (5 veces la velocidad de un helicóptero en la Tierra).

    Además, el avión debe ser ligero:
    El helicóptero Mars pesa unos 1,8 kg o casi lo mismo que una computadora portátil. Cada pieza tuvo que ser despojado de peso. En lugar de usar aerogel para aislamiento, la nave utiliza CO2 en los espacios entre los componentes. ¡Incluso el aerogel era demasiado pesado!

    Uno de los principales desafíos es sobrevivir a la noche marciana:
    Las temperaturas caen de -80 ° C a -100 ° C, por lo que dos tercios de la potencia de la nave se utilizan para mantener calientes sus componentes electrónicos. Solo un tercio se usa para volar. El tiempo estimado de vuelo es de 90 segundos.
