  • My DIY Geothermal System Was So CHEAP!!!

    19:35

If you've ever thought geothermal is out of your price range, I'm here to tell you that you may be surprised at how affordable it actually is. I did my own diy geothermal system for about the same price as a typical 13 to 14 SEER HVAC system, and I get double the efficiency. If you are willing to put in some work, you too can afford this option and reap the benefits of lower utility costs ongoing. A geothermal heat pump is one of the most efficient systems out there.

  • How Much My DIY Geothermal System Cost

    10:45

In this video, I share how much my diy geothermal system cost and give a breakdown of the major components of the system. When I totaled everything up, I was shocked that my geothermal system was the equivalent cost of a regular heat pump. My system is so much more efficient and will pay me in saving every single month. If you are willing to put in the time and energy, you too can have an inexpensive, highly efficient hvac system.

  • The weakest link of all geothermal heating systems and how to avoid it

    7:52

If you think that installing a geothermal heat pump, floor heating, hydronic heating or any other of the “new & sexy” HVAC systems will make the heating of your building efficient, you could actually end up with a bigger energy bill than with traditional heating systems. Why? There is more to consider than just the heat source, just the heat distribution or just the heat recovery….

The efficiency of a geothermal (or any other heating system) does not come from the heat pump it

At Euroheat Australia, we’ve been designing and installing these systems for houses and commercial buildings in Western Australia for over 27 years (since 1992).

As engineers specialised in sophisticated and cooling and heating systems, we don’t just calculate a building’s energy gains/losses.

We don’t just do ventilation. We don’t just do hydronic floor and wall systems. We don’t just do aircon. We don’t just open/close windows or blinds. Or just cool cellars. Or just heat pools.

Instead, we will help you optimise the building design to reduce the required energy in the first place.

We will then design every millimetre of the system, install it and continually monitor & optimise it. (The systems can completely integrate natural ventilation, floor heating/cooling, aircon heating/cooling, pool heating, cellar cooling, tap hot water.)

And we will make sure it all works together seamlessly, so that the occupants are comfortable all year round without having to do anything… and happy with the bills as well as the eco-footprint.

I would like to say that clients marvel about the natural and non-artificial feel of the climate in their houses, but they don’t:

They find the warm feeling in winter and cool in summer so natural (without rapid spikes of temperature or being blown hot/cold air at them from vents) that they don´t notice they have a system doing this at all

… and I suppose that is the ultimate compliment and sign of user happiness.

If you’d like to create a similar climate in your buildings, perhaps we should meet in your office, for a quick, 15 minute chat. Over your current projects. And over ideas on how to make them more energy efficient.

We promise no salesy pitching, just info on building physics, energy flows, thermal efficiency and how to use it all in seamlessly heating/cooling your buildings…

    13:35

Geothermal energy could be potentially transformational for our power grids, as we saw in our last video. But you and I can also get in on the act by drawing our own domestic heating from beneath our gardens (or communal gardens if you live in an apartment block). The technology is called a Ground Source Heat Pump. They've been around for a while but they are growing very quickly in popularity and may prove to be one of the lynch pins in helping us get to carbon neutrality by 2050.

In this video you will learn how to make a low cost, easy to build and very effective air heat exchanger by using soda cans, pvc pipes and some computer fans.

The purpose of the heat exchanger is to ventilate a room or house with fresh air while not loosing to much heat.

In winter times we want to have a comfortable indoor climate while not wasting to much energy on heating and ventilating.

The heat exchanger heats up the cold fresh air with the hot air that is be replaced before entering the room.

The heat exchanger can be used in hot climates as well to ventilate air conditioned rooms or houses.

The air heat exchanger consists mainly of an aluminum pipe made from soda cans that sits inside a wider pvc pipe.

The cold fresh air is being pushed trough the aluminum pipe to entering the room.

The hot saturated air is being pushed trough the pvc pipe in the other direction to leave the room.

Since aluminum is a very conductive material, the heat/cold will be transferred upon each other while keeping the fresh air separated from the saturated air resulting in fresh air entering the room without loosing to much heat.

  • Debunking 3 Geothermal Myths

Matt got the chance to meet up with Wade, a fellow builder in Rhode Island, who is in the process of installing a geothermal heating system at one of his projects. Geothermal heating systems have been around for much longer than you may think, and in theory are quite environmentally friendly and efficient. But due to a lack of consumer knowledge and the assumed complexity, geothermal still makes up a small fraction of HVAC systems used in America. But, as Wade and Lou (Wade’s HVAC installer) will tell us, these systems are more affordable than you think, and an excellent way to go about heating your house. There are a couple different types of geothermal heating systems, but essentially pipes in the ground circulate a water solution and extract heat energy and transfer it into buildings. If you are interested in learning more about this system, check out the video and listen to what Lou and Wade have to say!

  • Geothermal vs The DEEP FREEZE

    10:08

Does geothermal work in the depths of the winter? It does!!! The last couple of weeks have been record setting cold and I've been curious if my ground source heat pump is up to the task. I've been taking temperature readings of the incoming and outgoing fluid temperatures within the heat pump to see if the earth has enough heat to adequately heat my house. The readings have been interesting and I think geothermal is as good as it sounds.

    14:38

Science tells us there's enough energy in the first 10 kilometres below our planet's surface to provide all our energy needs for millions of years. The Romans tapped into it for their hot water spas. Today, we all know it as Geothermal Energy. There's no carbon dioxide emissions and no air pollution with geothermal, and it's literally right there beneath our feet. So why isn't our entire planet powered by it?

Richard took a homeowner to visit a house that had a ground-source or geo-thermal heating and air conditioning system. During the heating season, this type of HVAC system uses a heat-pump to move heat from the ground into the house. In cooling season, the heat-pump runs in reverse, moving heat from the house into the ground.

The geo-thermal heat pump that the homeowner had installed was manufactured by ClimateMaster [

  • DIY Geothermal Greenhouse Part 4: Earth Battery INSTALLATION

    9:38

#113 After starting to build our DIY EMT electrical metal conduit (1.25) greenhouse two years ago, we are finally completing the project.

We readily admit we are not experts at this (we are not engineers, greenhouse experts, or thermodynamic scientists), but a family doing our best to do it all ourselves and install based on all that we have read or watched on YouTube (Don't believe everything you see on the internet) to date and in line with our limited budget. Based on comments, we already know some things should be done differently. Hopefully, it still works well enough, even if not optimally. We plan to share the results regardless.

In this video we are INSTALLING the passive solar geothermal earth battery system (or climate battery/thermal banking/ground to air heat transfer) after excavating 3,200 cubic feet of dirt from underneath the greenhouse with a Mahindra 3016 tractor. The idea is to use two high efficiency inline fans to pull hot air from the top of the greenhouse during the heat of the day down through a system of black corrugated drain pipes (600 linear feet) in the ground (300' buried at two feet and 300' at four feet) in order to heat the clay in the ground and return cooler air to the greenhouse. At night the process reverses, effectively warming the greenhouse for the cost of leaving a 150 watt light bulb on. In the summer, spring, and fall, this will help to keep the greenhouse cool(er) on hot days, and in the spring, fall, and winter it will help keep it warm(er) at night - we HOPE.

Background on the project: Our farm homestead came with metal pipes in the ground from a former 16' x 50' hoop house. It also had water lines run from the farm well (which also needed to be restored) and a 60 amp electric service. In the first video we installed the 1.25 EMT conduit that serves as the frame. In future videos we'll frame the end walls, run electric, and get the plastic cover on in time for winter.

Each rib or section of the greenhouse consists of three 10' pipes, no cutting. They are joined by stock EMT connectors. The two outer angles are 117.3. The ridge angle is 125.4. Sides are 6' tall. Just over 10' to the ridge. 16' wide.

Ultimately, this will be a double wall plastic film greenhouse.

In this video we must admit a mistake and correct it. The supply, return, and manifold originally installed were too small. So we're fixing that and trying to do a better job of explaining the whole system.

Background on the project: Our farm homestead came with metal pipes in the ground from a former 16' x 50' hoop house. • Off Grid Geothermal Air Conditioning for Cabin-BETTER DESIGN

    13:42

Here is a revisit of the geothermal air conditioner for the off-grid pallet wood cabin. In this improved version, I used an air conditioner condenser form a car and a box fan. It is the same principle as the previous version which used cold water from a natural spring to cool off a heater core that had a fan blowing on it.

  • DIY Geothermal Greenhouse Pt 10: POLY FILM INFLATION

    16:43

This #119 In this video we look at the poly film inflation on our DIY geothermal greenhouse and discuss some initial data on the earth battery system.

*We readily admit we are not experts at this (we are not engineers, greenhouse experts, or thermodynamic scientists), but a family doing our best to do it all ourselves and install based on all that we have read or watched on YouTube (Don't believe everything you see on the internet) to date and in line with our limited budget. Based on comments on previous videos, we already know some things should be done differently. Hopefully, it still works well enough, even if not optimally. We plan to share the results regardless.

Background on the project: Our farm homestead came with metal pipes in the ground from a former 16' x 50' hoop house. It also had water lines run from the farm well (which also needed to be restored) and a 60 amp electric service. In the first video we installed the 1.25 EMT conduit that serves as the structure.

Each rib or section of the greenhouse consists of three 10' pipes, no cutting. They are joined by stock EMT connectors. The two outer angles are 117.3. The ridge angle is 125.4. Sides are 6' tall. Just over 10' to the ridge. 16' wide.

We installed an geothermal earth battery under the greenhouse using 4' perforated drain pipe and use high efficiency fans to pull hot air from the top down into the earth, storing that heat, and returning cool air during the day. At night, we reverse the process.

Ultimately, this will be a double wall plastic film greenhouse.

  • Couple builds Off Grid Solar Array on the Cheap, to Power their house, DIY

    24:57

We built a huge solar array in our backyard. This build was done on the cheap with hand tools, scrap material, and used panels. Watch the video for all the details.

This is part of our mission to supply our home with all our energy while off the grid. We are not quite there yet, but this array should put us over the top.

We have plenty more videos on our channel showing our other arrays, house, garage, batteries, and inverter builds. Please watch them for a more complete picture.

We find deals on materials and panels by scouring Craigslist, and FB Marketplace. However, if you can't find good used equipment, then I recommend Alt-E for great deals on Solar panels. If I was buying new panels from them I'd seriously consider this one: (Affiliate Link)

  • A Geothermal Greenhouse

    2:07

A GAHT® system allows our greenhouses to provide their own heating and cooling using the energy of the sun, and the soil underground. The result is a renewable climate control system that both heats and cools the greenhouse at a fraction of the cost of traditional HVAC.

For more information about our GAHT® System, visit our website at

The GAHT® system works by storing thermal energy in the soil underground. during the day greenhouses accumulate a lot of heat standard greenhouses have to exhaust all this heat outside essentially wasting it

the GAHT® system uses a fan to draw this excess heat underground where it is stored in the soil. When the greenhouse requires cooling thermostats turn on a fan which moves hot air from the top of the greenhouse through pipes buried underground where the soil absorbs the thermal energy from the air

the air is then exhausted back into the greenhouse cooler and slightly drier. In other words, the GAHT® system is cooling the air by actively heating the soil

The perimeter foundation surrounding the GAHT® system is highly insulated meaning that we are able to increase the temperature of the soil in the summer/fall and hold that heat longer than if the foundation was not insulated.

when the greenhouse needs heating at night or over the winter the fan, working in the same direction, now draws cool air from the greenhouse through the warm soil we have created. this warmer air is exhausted back into the greenhouse heating the greenhouse

this simple system requires nothing more than some piping and fans and the soil under the greenhouse it's why we call our greenhouses self-heating because the source of the heat is provided by the greenhouse itself which collects all the thermal energy that is stored in the soil it's also what allows our greenhouses to grow things like bananas and grapefruit year-round even in climates like this

  • Flushing, Purging and Filtering the Geothermal Loop

    11:06

Welcome to Enertech University, online training by Enertech. One of the most critical installation procedure is flushing, purging, filtering the loop before startup. The top cause of pump failure is water quality, air, and debris. This video will discuss the importance of water evaluation, filtering, removing debris, and adding antifreeze.

  • My DIY Geothermal - Fusion Welding 2 HDPE pipe with a $59 Amazon Unit

    7:43

I had to fusion weld a few HDPE pipes for the custom 13.5 ton 5 unit geothermal heating and cooling system I am installing in my 100 year old house. I looked at tool prices, and sets ranged from around $375 to $1000 depending on the dies and accessories included. Then I saw a $59 China special on Amazon. It was the wrong voltage (220), the wrong measurement system (metric dies that don't fit IPS pipes), and questionable quality - but I am a cheapskate. Some 6 hours of machining my own dies and tools later, I shot this video. If I were to do it again, I would spend the money to get a set with the IPS dies I needed - but this worked!

  • how to make geothermal slinkies and how to get an extra 100 feet of heat exchange

    4:38

I wanted to share how to keep the loops from kinking as you make them, show you some tips for making a better slinky work table, and tell you how to get an extra hundred feet of free heat exchange out of each loop by not mixing your outgoing loop with your return loop.

Seriously, why would anyone tie the outgoing pipe directly to the return loops? It's just plane silly to mix your hot and cold like that. Instead put the slinky return loops in the trench first and bury them in several feet of dirt, and then bring the out-flowing line to the house on top of that so you have a couple feet of dirt insulation. Then fill the rest of the trench. Water flows out the upper straight portion of pipe to the end of the trench and then to the deeper slinky loops for the trip back to the house.

Also there is much ignored middle ground between the really long 300' straight line trenches and 66' trenches with 3' loops overlapping every 18'. I have opted to not overlap loops, just putting 3' loops side by side in 100' trenches. It gets me 50% more surface area for heat exchange and I just have to dig an extra 34'.

  • Geothermal well point dig and pump installation

    30:54

I'm digging a new well in order to setup a geothermal cooling system for my shed. In this video, part 1, I dig the bore hole, show how to pound a sand point well, and connect the well up to a jet pump using poly pipe.

    Part 2:

  • Vaillant ground source heat pump case study: The Meaden Project

    15:00

Emma and Richard Meaden's home renovation project - affectionately known as the Meaden Project - saw the installation of a Vaillant geoTHERM exclusive 8kW ground source heat pump to meet all the couple's heating and hot water demands via renewable energy sources, while keeping their ongoing energy bills to an absolute minimum.

This full-length case study film captures the install, from the very first site visit to begin the ground works, all the way through to the heat pump being commissioned and turned on for the first time. It also explains the financial and fuel savings anticipated and how the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) will see the Meadens receive payments in excess of £18,000 over the next seven years.

The install team talk through the installation, explaining each step and providing some useful insights for anyone considering a ground source heat pump for their own project. And Emma Meaden also talks about the project from her own perspective, including her rationale for specifying Vaillant and a ground source heat pump.

Geothermal Energy Uses The Natural Resources Underground To Heat & Cool Your Home

  • Central Geothermal System Design and Control

    1:23:19

Geothermal systems have been growing in popularity because they use less energy and cost less to operate. Most designers are familiar with heat pump systems, using small, geothermal heat pumps, distributed throughout the building, that are coupled with a ground source heat exchanger.

Today, project teams are also considering central geothermal systems consisting of one or two chillers coupled with a closed, geothermal loop which exchanges heat with the earth. These systems offer premium energy efficiency, with the additional benefit of centralized maintenance, acoustic advantages, and flexibility.
