  • All Alone in the Night - Time-lapse footage of the Earth as seen from the ISS

    2:30

    FAQ:

    Images:
Music: 'Freedom Fighters' by Two Steps from Hell

    Editor: David Peterson
Serving Suggestion: 1080p, lights off, volume up :)

Inspired by a version of the opening sequence of this clip called 'What does it feel like to fly over planet Earth?' (Inspiration: I tracked down the original time-lapse sequence taken on the International Space Station (ISS) via NASA, found some additional ones there, including the spectacular Aurora Australis sequences, and set it to a soundtrack that almost matches the awe and wonder I feel when I see our home from above.

To those brave men and women who fly alone in the night to take us to the stars, we salute you.

    -----------------------

    Sequences:

    1. (0:00) North-to-south down the western coast of North and South America.
    2. (0:48) North-to-south over Florida, the Bahamas and other Caribbean islands.
    3. (0:56) South-East Asia, approaching the Philippine Sea
    4. (1:04) Western Europe, from France through Italy, Greece, Turkey and the Middle East.
    5. (1:20) Aurora Australis, over the Indian Ocean, approaching Australia
    6. (1:36) Aurora Australis, over the Indian Ocean.
    7. (1:52) Aurora Australis, unknown location in the Southern Hemisphere.

    -----------------------

Featured on NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day!

Explanation from NASA: Many wonders are visible when flying over the Earth at night. A compilation of such visual spectacles was captured recently from the International Space Station (ISS) and set to rousing music. Passing below are white clouds, orange city lights, lightning flashes in thunderstorms, and dark blue seas. On the horizon is the golden haze of Earth's thin atmosphere, frequently decorated by dancing auroras as the video progresses. The green parts of auroras typically remain below the space station, but the station flies right through the red and purple auroral peaks. Solar panels of the ISS are seen around the frame edges. The ominous wave of approaching brightness at the end of each sequence is just the dawn of the sunlit half of Earth, a dawn that occurs every 90 minutes.

  • Singapore’s Night Owls: Through NASAs Black Marble Project | Midnight Story | CNA Documentary

    47:58

The night is half of our lives. But how much do we really know about it, and its impact on us here in Singapore? Midnight Story seeks to unlock NASA's little known but ground-breaking Black Marble project that is able to capture high resolution imagery from Space to paint a completely new picture of the Earth at night.

Through unprecedented exclusive access to the NASA Black Marble project - we will turn our attention to nocturnal scientists, researchers and creatives in Singapore to document what their specialist insights and technology can reveal about the city state when the sun sets.

The signal that can be seen at night is predominantly a human one - as we watch the light push into the darkness. Nowhere is this clearer than in the Lion City with our highly urbanized society. But what can this novel technology and innovative science teach us about Singapore?

    2:12

In daylight our big blue marble is all land, oceans and clouds. But the night - is electric.

This view of Earth at night is a cloud-free view from space as acquired by the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership Satellite (Suomi NPP). A joint program by NASA and NOAA, Suomi NPP captured this nighttime image by the satellite's Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS). The day-night band on VIIRS detects light in a range of wavelengths from green to near infrared and uses filtering techniques to observe signals such as city lights, gas flares, and wildfires. This new image is a composite of data acquired over nine days in April and thirteen days in October 2012. It took 312 satellite orbits and 2.5 terabytes of data to get a clear shot of every parcel of land surface.

This video uses the Earth at night view created by NASA's Earth Observatory with data processed by NOAA's National Geophysical Data Center and combined with a version of the Earth Observatory's Blue Marble: Next Generation.

Explanatory video on the Earth's rotation and the resultant pattern of day and night on Earth. Interactive and printable worksheets relating to this topic are on ngscience.com.

All content on the ngscience.com portal is aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

In space, the Earth moves in different ways. One way the Earth moves is by spinning on its axis. An axis is an imaginary line that runs through the Earth’s center. This spinning movement on its axis is called a rotation. As it rotates, part of the Earth is facing the sun. This part of the Earth it lit up and experiences daytime. At the same time, the opposite side of the Earth is facing away from the sun. This part of the Earth is in darkness and it is nighttime.

It takes the Earth 24 hours to complete one rotation. The repeating rotation of the Earth is why we experience the daily pattern of day and night.

  • BEAUTIFUL EARTH Time-lapse 4K VIDEO

    5:52

Over 85.000 photos with over 120 gigabyte of the last 8 years International Space Station allowed me to create this fantastic video.

Images courtesy of the Earth Science and Remote Sensing Unit, NASA Johnson Space Center (eol.jsc.nasa.gov) .
    Thanks a lot for that!

The quality of the photos was in a very bad condition and I had spent over 150 hours sorting out and processing the photos.
Approximately 95% of all image errors were corrected. For the remaining 5% I would have to invest another 300 hours, I think.
I prefer to invest this time for new videos :-)

For the best possible 4K quality the photos were processed with state-of-the-art tools and converted into a time-lapse video.
I hope you like it a bit?

  • 4K Time Lapse Video: Earth By Night - Earth from space

    4:03

This4K time lapse video was created using photos taken by the crew of the International Space Station during Expedition 45

A bit more about time lapse photography (from wikipedia)
Time-lapse photography is a technique whereby the frequency at which film frames are captured (the frame rate) is much lower than that used to view the sequence. When played at normal speed, time appears to be moving faster and thus lapsing. For example, an image of a scene may be captured once every second, then played back at 30 frames per second; the result is an apparent 30 times speed increase. In a similar manner, film can also be played at a much lower rate than it was captured at, slowing down fast action, as slow motion or high-speed photography.

Processes that would normally appear subtle to the human eye, e.g. the motion of the sun and stars in the sky or plant growth, become very pronounced. Time-lapse is the extreme version of the cinematography technique of undercranking. Stop motion animation is a comparable technique; a subject that does not actually move, such as a puppet, can repeatedly be moved manually by a small distance and photographed; the photographs can be played back as a film, showing the subject appearing to move.

    LYRICS
Now I say, do what thou wilt, nightmarish requiem
Pierce the skin as you scream, just like the slaughter of pigs
Mask the pain, crown the king, It's all coming undone
In nothingness, I'm every dream, I'm everything you never were

Fall, into the cracks of the world
Your kingdom never comes. It's up to us, It's up to us
Gone, feels like the end of the world
Your kingdom never comes, Keep crawling to its core
It's our last night on earth

Content to scourge the obscene, impale the nemesis
Lash the spine & the spleen, thrown out like scraps to the wind
    Atrocity & Disease, a ruthless warrior's ruin
In nothingness, I'm every dream, I'm everything you'll never be

We fight the horror, cause it's all that we can do
We fear tomorrow, but that won't save us from our doom
With blood and thunder, we tread the waters
The sky is broken, Keep crawling to its core
It's our last night on earth
