  • NASA Perseverance Rover Lands Safely On Mars | FULL LANDING SEQUENCE

    1:53:54

NASA on Thursday successfully landed a new robotic rover on Mars as part of a mission to search for life beyond planet Earth.

Cheers erupted in mission control at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory near Pasadena, Calif., as the Perseverance rover touched down safely on the red planet just before 4 p.m. Thursday after entering its atmosphere at more than 12,000 miles per hour. The rover had been traveling through space since it was launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida at the end of July.

Perseverance is NASA’s fifth rover to land on Mars and will kick off a two-year mission roaming the planet’s surface in search of signs of ancient life.

Perseverance landed on the planet’s Jezero Crater, the site of an ancient lake that existed nearly 4 billion years ago.

The car-sized robotic explorer is equipped with a drill, a robotic arm and several other sophisticated scientific tools that will enable it to collect rock and dirt samples that will be picked up by a future mission to Mars and brought back to Earth.

“NASA works. When we put our arms together and our hands together and our brains together, we can succeed. This is what NASA does. This is what we can do as a country on all of the problems we have, we need to work together to do these kinds of things,” NASA chief engineer Rob Manning said following the landing.

The rover is also carrying a small helicopter dubbed Ingenuity, which is aiming to explore Mars by air. If successful, the aircraft will be the first of its kind to fly on another planet.

The mission was the latest of three that made it to Mars this month. Two spacecraft launched by the United Arab Emirates and China began orbiting the red planet last week.

  • DAREDEVIL MISSION: NASA rover Perseverance on track for landing on Mars

    2:41

NASA's Mars rover Perseverance, the most advanced robotic astrobiology lab ever flown to another world, neared the end of its seven-month, 293-million-mile (470-million-km) journey on target for a daredevil landing attempt on the red planet.

Hurtling through space across the last 150,000 miles (240,000 km) of its voyage, Perseverance was headed for a touchdown set for Thursday inside a vast basin called Jezero Crater, site of a long-vanished Martian lake bed.

Mission managers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory near Los Angeles said on Wednesday they were hopeful the six-wheeled, SUV-sized rover would arrive safely on a flat plain beside towering cliffs at the edge of an ancient river delta.

The chief objective of the two-year, $2.7 billion mission is to search for signs of microbial organisms that may have flourished on Mars some 3 billion years ago, when the planet was warmer, wetter and presumably more hospitable to life.

Larger and more sophisticated than any of the four mobile science vehicles NASA landed on Mars before it, Perseverance is designed to extract rock samples for analysis back on Earth - the first such specimens ever collected by humankind from another planet.

Two future missions are planned to retrieve the samples and return them to NASA in the next decade.

Watch the moment the Nasa Perseverance rover landed on Mars.
Engineers at Nasa's mission control in California erupted with joy when confirmation of touchdown came through, as their vehicle landed in a deep crater near the planet's equator called Jezero.

The crater is thought to have held a giant lake billions of years ago. And where there's been water, there's the possibility there might also have been life.

The robot will now spend at least the next two years drilling into the local rocks, looking for evidence that Mars had life on its surface.

“Every time we do one of these missions, we make fabulous discoveries and each one is more exciting than the last,” said the director of Nasa's Jet Propulsion Laboratory Mike Watkins.

  • Touchdown Confirmed! NASA Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover Lands on the Red Planet

    57

NASA successfully landed its largest and most sophisticated science rover on Mars, as the spacecraft Perseverance touched down in an ancient river delta that may contain signs of whether the planet ever harbored microbial life.

Cheers erupted at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, which oversees the agency’s rover fleet, when flight controllers received a signal Thursday at 3:55 p.m. Eastern that the rover had touched down. Perseverance had traveled 292 million miles (470 million kilometers) since launching July 30 from Cape Canaveral, Florida.

Mars landings are among the toughest challenges in space exploration, and Perseverance’s arrival in Jezero Crater was the trickiest NASA has ever attempted. Strewn by boulders and featuring sand dunes and cliffs as high as 300 feet (about 90 meters), the 28-mile-wide (45 kilometers) crater had been rejected for previous missions. NASA targeted it after advances in terrain-navigation technology enabled the craft to alter its flight path autonomously.

The $2.7 billion rover also carries a drone helicopter known as Ingenuity with 4-foot rotors, which will be the first craft to attempt to fly on another planet. A successful landing would mean the aircraft could fly as soon as next month, depending on how scientists assess different locations for a flight.

This is the fifth time since 1997 that the National Aeronautics and Space Administration has attempted a landing on the Martian surface, a daunting task of physics and engineering that comes with a dismal record: More than half of previous efforts have failed in 50 years of attempts. The former Soviet Union is the only other country that has successfully placed a spacecraft on Mars.

“This is one of the most difficult maneuvers we make in the space business,” Matt Wallace, deputy project manager of NASA’s Mars 2020 mission, told reporters on Wednesday.

Hitting the Martian atmosphere at 12,000 miles per hour, the spacecraft will have to rapidly decelerate to land at about 2 mph, during what rocket scientists call “seven minutes of terror.” Wallace likened the intricate process to “a controlled disassembly” of the craft to safely disgorge the rover onto the surface.

Perseverance joins two other NASA missions exploring Mars. The Curiosity rover arrived in mid-2012, and the stationary InSight lander began exploring the planet’s geology in November 2018.

The 10-foot long Perseverance has nearly the same dimensions as Curiosity, but weighs 278 pounds (126 kilograms) more because of a roughly 50% increase in science payload. Perseverance’s total weight is about 2,260 pounds, and the rover is expected to operate for at least two years.

Among the vehicle’s new features: more cameras and a microphone to record the sounds of descent and landing.

  • 7 minutes of terror | NASA pulls off daring Mars landing of Perseverance rover

    36:54

WASHINGTON — After a nearly seven month journey covering almost 300 million miles through space, NASA's Perseverance rover has landed on Mars.

It's the most advanced rover ever sent to the Red Planet and was aiming for a touchdown on Feb. 18 in the Jezero Crater, an ancient river delta that could hold evidence of past life.

The plan is to eventually return rock samples collected by the rover. But before that can happen, NASA had to pull off a daring landing.

After all, landing on Mars is no easy task. Only about 40% of the missions that have been sent to Mars - by any space agency - have been successful, according to NASA.

  • NASA rover lands on Mars to look for signs of ancient life

    11:52

A NASA rover streaked through the orange Martian sky and landed on the planet Thursday, accomplishing the riskiest step yet in an epic quest to bring back rocks that could answer whether life ever existed on Mars.

Ground controllers at the space agency’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, leaped to their feet, thrust their arms in the air and cheered in both triumph and relief on receiving confirmation that the six-wheeled Perseverance had touched down on the red planet, long a deathtrap for incoming spacecraft.

“Now the amazing science starts,” a jubilant Thomas Zurbuchen, NASA’s science mission chief, said at a news conference, where he theatrically ripped up the contingency plan in the event of a failure and threw the document over his shoulders.

The landing marks the third visit to Mars in just over a week. Two spacecraft from the United Arab Emirates and China swung into orbit around Mars on successive days last week. All three missions lifted off in July to take advantage of the close alignment of Earth and Mars, journeying some 300 million miles in nearly seven months.

Perseverance, the biggest, most advanced rover ever sent by NASA, became the ninth spacecraft since the 1970s to successfully land on Mars, every one of them from the U.S.

  • Mars Rover Curiosity Lands, and NASA Becomes Global Capital of High-Fives

    1:17

A graceful leap, calculated tumble, and, finally, sticking the landing: It all happened far away from the London Olympics, on Earth's red neighbor, Mars. NASA's Curiosity Rover survived its perilous seven-minute descent into the Gale Crater last night, allowing engineers to exhale explosively and give each other high-fives all around.

The $2.5 billion, one-ton, six-wheeled nuclear-powered mobile science laboratory quickly beamed back three images from the Martian surface to the landing team at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory near Los Angeles soon after touching down. The team erupted into cheers after seeing the images, and President Obama hailed the landing as an unprecedented feat of technology that will stand as a point of national pride far into the future.

Curiosity, which is twice as large and five times heavier than twin rovers Spirit and Opportunity, will look for evidence that Mars may have once hosted the basic building blocks necessary for microbial life to evolve. But for now, we can just give her high scores for not blowing up.
