I asked Sofia to write a little blurb about her job experience: Sofia Montalvo is an Ice Analyst at the US National Ice Center (USNIC). She studied meteorology at the University of Miami and atmospheric science at North Carolina State University, but did not know that mapping and forecasting sea ice for safety and navigation was a thing she could do. She loves her job for the mission it upholds: The USNIC Operations Department Analysts use remote sensing and model data to produce hemispheric, regional, and tailored ice and snow analyses. The Operations department is committed to the safety of navigation, protection of life and property, and government scientific research.

Behind the Scenes Video of how we built it:
⇊ Click below for more links! ⇊

I have been wanting to build this thing as long as I understood the physics of how it all works. A super big thanks to David Linderman, Jeremy Fielding, Trent, and David Woodall (the welder).

I realize most people who support Smarter Every Day don't do it for transactional reasons, (ie, I'll support Smarter Every Day to get stuff). I also realized that there is often a mental hurdle that must be crossed before support on Patreon starts. My thought is that I'd really like to give folks a baseball, and it might provide enough momentum to get over that initial hurdle. I signed the first shipment of baseballs I received, but I only have so many of those. There's no implication that my signature is worth anything.... it's just kind of what you do with baseballs... it's a tradition. After a certain number, it will transition to unsigned baseballs. I've got enough signed baseballs to over all existing Patrons, and many more, but I will wait a month or so to see how many I need to get, then I'll order the second batch. I like to support jobs and pay people for what they're good at. The machinists and welders who made the parts in this video for example. The whole intent here is to diversify away from solely being ad sponsored so I don't have to answer to anyone but myself and Patrons with respect to the types of content I choose to make. Thank you for understanding what I'm doing here, and even if you decide not to kick in at , I'm super grateful you took the time to watch this video!
    Thank you very much,

    Destin

  • Throwing Cats in Space

    6:19

If a cat is dropped upside down at zero-gravity, will it fall on its feet?

NASA and the U.S Air Force solved this seemingly random question in the early 1960s, after sending cats into a reduced-gravity aircraft popularly known as The Vomit Comet.

This footage shows the experiment in a weightless environment. The cats flail around helplessly, unable to land upright. The lessons learned from the experiment helped NASA set future guidelines to help astronauts move around while in space…

  • Could the Crew of Columbia Have Been Rescued?

    14:40

Although it has been accepted that there was nothing that could have been done to save the crew of Columbia but in the report in the disaster, it recommended NASA create a rescue/repair plan
to see what could have been done if information about foam strike could have been investigated by the crew as soon as possible. This video looks at what was recommended in Appendix D.13 the STS-107 flight Options Assessment and the options that might of existed.

  • How a Navy SEAL Clears a Room I Training Your Kids

    7:06

In this video Jason Pike, former Navy SEAL and his son is running a CQC drill that incorporates Hallway Movement, Cross Cover, Back to Back, Button Hook, and other tactical considerations for this given situation.

Keep in mind that there are many avenues of approach. Whatever approach you choose as an SOP, it is important to understand the Pro's and Con's of that SOP so you can stay ahead of the enemy.

Air-soft is a tool that I have been using for a very long time for training my children. Although you cannot get the same actions such as recoil and manipulations, air-soft platforms have came a long way. It also allows you to save time with in home training as well as ensuring 100% safety for all shooters.

Training your children should be fun for all. As they get older, they learn that there is less fun and more work, however if you try and push your children at a young age, you will turn them away from the love of firearms and self defense training.

Disclaimer: When talking about pushing my son to the CENTER of the room he was clearing, I use this term as a baseline. Once we progress in tactics I explain to my son the difference between a doorway, threshold, an opening. You don't want to add too much to their plate at once. It will cause confusion and discouragement. Simply focus on the basics until it is mastered and they are ready to take on more.

    2:50

NASA astronaut Jonny Kim is a member of the Artemis Team, a select group of astronauts charged with focusing on the development and training efforts for early Artemis missions.

Through the Artemis program NASA and a coalition of international partners will return to the Moon to learn how to live on other worlds for the benefit of all. With Artemis missions NASA will send the first woman and the next man to the Moon in 2024 and about once per year thereafter.

Through the efforts of humans and robots, we will explore more of the Moon than ever before; to lead a journey of discovery that benefits our planet with life changing science, to use the Moon and its resources as a technology testbed to go even farther and to learn how to establish and sustain a human presence far beyond Earth.

  • NASA Astronaut Jonny Kim 12 shares what he learned from USD, how he stays grounded

    9:15

I didn't have a lot of confidence growing up... but trying new things, things that I was scared of, made me realize that we are all so much stronger than we give ourselves credit for.

Before he was an astronaut, Jonny Kim had a few other jobs. He was a Navy Seal, a Harvard-trained physician... and he even handed out parking citations at the University of San Diego. He credits USD with providing him the foundation in mathematics to solve complex problems, and remembers the relationships he gained at the university most of all.

This past Wednesday, Kim was officially named part of NASA's Artemis Team preparing to return to the Moon (and go beyond), alongside fellow alumnus Matthew Dominick '05. We spoke with him via Zoom and he shared memories of USD, how he stays grounded and the value of challenging yourself.
