  • Neil deGrasse Tyson - The Most Astounding Fact

    3:36

The most astounding fact is the knowledge that the atoms that comprise life on Earth the atoms that make up the human body are traceable to the crucibles that cooked light elements into heavy elements in their core under extreme temperatures and pressures. These stars, the high mass ones among them went unstable in their later years they collapsed and then exploded scattering their enriched guts across the galaxy guts made of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and all the fundamental ingredients of life itself. These ingredients become part of gas cloud that condense, collapse, form the next generation of solar systems stars with orbiting planets, and those planets now have the ingredients for life itself.

So that when I look up at the night sky and I know that yes, we are part of this universe, we are in this universe, but perhaps more important than both of those facts is that the Universe is in us.

When I reflect on that fact, I look up -- many people feel small because they're small and the Universe is big -- but I feel big, because my atoms came from those stars.

    There's a level of connectivity.

That's really what you want in life, you want to feel connected, you want to feel relevant you want to feel like a participant in the goings on of activities and events around you That's precisely what we are, just by being alive...

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson joins us to talk about one of our favorite subjects: space.

In the three-chaptered video, Tyson speaks about the search for alien life inside and outside of the Goldilocks Zone, why the term dark matter should really be called dark gravity, and how the rotation of the Earth may have been the deciding factor in a football game.

These fascinating space facts, as well as others shared in Tyson's books, make it easier for everyone to grasp complex ideas that are literally out of this world.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    NEIL DEGRASSE TYSON:

Neil deGrasse Tyson was born and raised in New York City where he was educated in the public schools clear through his graduation from the Bronx High School of Science. Tyson went on to earn his BA in Physics from Harvard and his PhD in Astrophysics from Columbia. He is the first occupant of the Frederick P. Rose Directorship of the Hayden Planetarium. His professional research interests are broad, but include star formation, exploding stars, dwarf galaxies, and the structure of our Milky Way. Tyson obtains his data from the Hubble Space Telescope, as well as from telescopes in California, New Mexico, Arizona, and in the Andes Mountains of Chile.Tyson is the recipient of nine honorary doctorates and the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal. His contributions to the public appreciation of the cosmos have been recognized by the International Astronomical Union in their official naming of asteroid 13123 Tyson.

Tyson's new book is Astrophysics for People in a Hurry, you can check it at
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    TRANSCRIPT:

NEIL DEGRASSE TYSON: When we think of places you might find life we typically think of the Goldilocks Zone around the star where water would be liquid in its natural state. And if you get a little too close to the star, heat would evaporate the water and you don't have it anymore. It's gone. Too far away it would freeze and neither of those states of H2O are useful to life as we know it. We need liquid water. So you can establish this Green Zone, this habitable zone, this Goldilocks Zone, where if you find a planet orbiting there hey, good chance it could have liquid water. Let's look there first for life as we know it.

Now it turns out that this source of heat, of course is traceable to the sun and if you go farther out everything water should be frozen, all other things being equal. But Europa, a moon of Jupiter sitting well outside of the Goldilocks Zone is kept warm not from energy sources traceable to the Sun, but from what we call the tidal forces of Jupiter itself. So, Jupiter and surrounding moons are actually pumping energy into Europa. And how does it do that? As Europa orbits Jupiter its shape changes. It's not fundamentally different from tides rising and falling on Earth. The shape of the water system of the Earth is responding to tidal forces of the moon. And when you do that to a solid object, the solid object is stressing. And because of this, a consequence of this is that you are pumping energy into the object. It is no different from when you say to anyone who's familiar with racquet sports, indoor racquet sports. It could be racquetball or squash. You say let's arm up the ball before we start playing.

You want to hit it around a few times. You are literally warming up the ball. It's not just simply let's get loose. You are literally warming up the ball. How? You are distorting it every time you smack it and then the resilience of the ball pops it back into shape and every time you do that, every smack, you're pumping energy into the ball. It's not fundamentally different from what's going on in orbit around Jupiter. So, you have this frozen world, Europa, completely frozen on its surface but you look at the surface and there are cracks in the ice. There are ridges in the ice where there's a crack and it shifted and then refroze. So this ridge has a discontinuity in the crack and it continues in another place. So what this tells you is that Europe cannot be completely frozen because if it were nothing would be moving. You look at the surface of Europa, the frozen surface, there are like ice chunks that are shifted and refrozen and shifted again. It looks just like if you fly over the Arctic Ocean.

Fly over the Arctic Ocean in the winter...

As one of the most famous faces in the world of Astrophysics, Neil deGrasse Tyson certainly knows a thing or two about space. During a recent trip to London we got the science legend to share his thoughts on some pretty wild tweets about all things stars and galaxies from UK rappers including Skepta, Wiley and AJ Tracey.

Thankfully we now know that: 1) it’s impossible to get to the moon and back in a day, 2) you can’t literally have stars in your eyes and 3) UK rappers love space!

  • Neil deGrasse Tyson Explains the Smallness of Molecules

    15:09

How small is a molecule? In this StarTalk explainer, Neil deGrasse Tyson and comic co-host Chuck Nice are here to help you visualize a molecule’s actual size.

To start, Neil gives his favorite thought experiment to help us understand the size of molecules. You’ll learn why this leads Chuck to say he’s never drinking water again. Discover more about “quantum construction” and building things on a molecular level. You’ll learn about Avogadro's number and measuring things in mole.

We explore why it’s remarkable that we were even able to discover molecules at all. Neil explains how our five senses held us back from discovering things until we invented ways outside our senses to discover them. All that, plus, we discuss why there’s a philosophical issue in our own physiology when it comes to communicating things of extraordinary size in the universe.

  • Neil deGrasse Tyson Explains the Earths Rotation

    18:55

We know the Earth rotates…but why can’t we feel it? On this StarTalk explainer, Neil deGrasse Tyson and comic co-host Chuck Nice investigate centrifugal force and the Earth’s rotation.

What is centrifugal force? Well, if you’ve been on a carnival ride, you probably know. However, Neil tells us why there is really no such thing as centrifugal force. Find out why you weigh less when you’re closer to the equator.

You’ll learn what speed Earth has to be rotating so that the centrifugal force balances out the gravitational force causing you to hover just above the surface in what Chuck calls “super-low Earth orbit.” All that, plus, Chuck uses this to invent a new diet.

  • Neil deGrasse Tyson Explains “The Sunset Illusion”

    16:20

In this StarTalk Radio explainer video, Neil deGrasse Tyson and comic co-host Chuck Nice are exploring what’s really going on when you watch those beautiful sunrises and sunsets.

To start, you’ll get a refresher on how the days of the week were named. Then, we discuss our pre-Copernican vocabulary to describe what’s going on in the sky. You’ll learn how refraction and our atmosphere impact sunrise and sunset. Neil tells us why, when you think you’re watching the sunset or sunrise, the sun is already past the point you're seeing. Neil also tells us how telescopes can calculate refractive effects when looking at stars.

Then, you’ll learn why the equinox is not actually the day where there’s an equal amount of night and day. Lastly, find out how light would interact with Earth if it were a black hole. All that, plus, Neil and Chuck discuss other “ghosts of the sky.”

Are UFOs actually alien spacecraft visiting Earth? They might be, says Neil deGrasse Tyson, but if you want to make that claim you better bring the evidence to support it.Eyewitness testimony is the lowest form of evidence. To measure what is true or not true in the world, we require data -- and when it comes to alien appearances, it's as astronomer Carl Sagan said: Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. So what can you do to prove your alien abduction story? Take selfies, live-stream video to the internet, and if you happen to find yourself in a spacecraft getting your gonads poked, then grab an item from the alien lab as evidence before they release you back on Earth. Neil deGrasse Tyson wants to believe, but not until he sees the data.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    NEIL DEGRASSE TYSON

Tyson's new book is Letters From an Astrophysicist (2019).

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    TRANSCRIPT:

NEIL DEGRASSE TYSON: There are many people who see things in the sky and are sure – they can't explain it, so they're sure it's aliens visiting. Well, if you were really, really sure of that, you are not likely to write me a letter. Unless you're writing me a letter to convince me of your point of view. But that doesn't make for a fertile exchange. If you see lights in the sky and you don't know what they are and you want further insight on what they could be and write me a letter, that's a meaningful exchange.

If you can't explain what it is and it's flying and it's an object, it's an unidentified flying object, period. You just said you don't know what it is so that sentence should not continue beyond that phrase. You can't say I don't know what it is, therefore, it must be aliens visiting from another planet. If you don't know what it is it therefore must not be anything.

Okay, so maybe we are getting visited by aliens daily. In all of these sightings, it's aliens. I don't have a problem with that. My issue is what you are presenting as evidence in support of that claim. If it's entirely grounded in your eyewitness testimony you need to know that eyewitness testimony on the totem of weight of evidence it is at the bottom. A little scary because in the court of law it's considered pretty high evidence. People say, I need a witness! No, you want data. That's what you really want. You want information that didn't have to pass through someone's sensory system so that you can minimize bias, delusion, the filtering that we always do as the world outside of us comes through our senses for us to then decide what is and what is not going on around us. It's why we invented science. So that we wouldn't have to depend on our senses as the ultimate measure of what is or is not true in the world.

Science and its methods and tools. The telescope, the microscope, the recorders, chart recorders, all of this. So, the best thing is—and by the way, I don't care what your pedigree is. I don't care if you're a military colonel, pilot, Air Force. Are you human? That's all that matters. After that give me better evidence. And yes, Carl Sagan's famous dictum, extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. So the best thing is to drag the alien into town square and you'll be rich and famous overnight. You don't have to argue with me. I'm not stopping you. Go ahead. But do you know what's more significant than that fact is that today, worldwide, we are uploading to the internet a billion photographs a day. Everyone has a camera and a video camera. Remember all those reports of pe...

  • Neil deGrasse Tyson: Where Are the Aliens?

    3:54

If there is alien life in the galaxy, where are they? Have they already visited Earth? In this video from Business Insider and StarTalk Radio, astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson speculates on what might happen if aliens do visit Earth, and what they might think of us, our scientific achievements and our early adventures in space. Neil also discusses what Stephen Hawking’s fear of aliens really says about how we have treated less advanced civilizations in the past.

    7:37

Neil deGrasse Tyson was awed when he visited the Hayden Planetarium in New York City for the first time at the age of nine; since 1996, he's run the place. The rock-star astrophysicist, who has 7.2 million Twitter followers, can fill a theater with people eager to hear him talk science. And his latest book, Astrophysics for People in a Hurry, offers a shortcut to scientific literacy - a goal Tyson also pursues in his radio and TV series, Star Talk. Martha Teichner reports.

  • NEIL DEGRASSE TYSON: Heres Our Best Bet For Finding Life In Space

    2:30

When astronomers first went about finding planets outside our solar system, the method they used could only detect planets the size of Jupiter. A good start, although not ideal if you're curious about life outside of Earth.

But if you're looking for life as we know it, you want to find familiar planets, StarTalk Radio host Neil deGrasse Tyson tells us. Planets maybe the size of Earth. Planets that are the right distance from their host star.

So, in order to satiate our curiousity for potential life outside Earth, NASA launched Kepler — a space observatory with the primary purpose of identifying Earth-like planets.

With well over 2,000 planet candidates, Kepler is our best bet for finding life as we know it, says Tyson.

Watch our video interview with Neil deGrasse Tyson to find out more about Earth-like planets and to hear his thoughts on life outside of Earth.

  • Neil deGrasse Tyson: Pluto Is My Favorite Comet

    2:40

For one reason or another, some people are still upset about Pluto's demotion from planet to dwarf planet. This demotion, by the way, occurred all the way back in 2006.

So, what does famed astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson have to say to these people? Get over it. It's done. Just get over it.

The StarTalk Radio host explains why it makes perfect sense to classify Pluto as a dwarf planet.
