  • Preview: Neil deGrasse Tyson on Science, Religion and the Universe.

    58

This week on Moyers & Company, Bill Moyers continues his conversation with Neil deGrasse Tyson, Frederick P. Rose director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History in New York and host of the upcoming Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey on the National Geographic Channel and Fox TV.
Tyson speculates not only on the nature of our expanding, accelerating universe and the dark energy and dark matter that may control its destiny but on the possibility of many parallel universes. Why should nature make anything in ones? he asks. Everything else we ever thought was unique or special, we found more of them, so, philosophically, it's not unsettling to imagine more than one universe.
Tyson and Moyers also discuss whether science and the Bible can be reconciled. Dr. Tyson points out that while living in a free country means enjoying the right to freedom of thought, the problem arises if you have a religious philosophy that is not based on objective realities that you then want to put in a science classroom. Then I'm going to stand there and say, 'No, I'm not going to allow you in the science classroom. I'm not telling you what to think, I'm just telling you in the science class, you're not doing science.'
Due to popular demand and with the motto Occupy Democracy, Bill Moyers is continuing his popular weekly broadcast Moyers & Company with a new half-hour format that, he notes, will still give us flexibility to offer a forum to strong and provocative voices.

  • Neil deGrasse Tyson - 2006 Beyond Belief: Science, Reason, Religion & Survival

    41:19

Just 40 years after a famous TIME magazine cover asked Is God Dead? the answer appears to be a resounding No! According to a survey by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life in a recent issue of Foreign Policy magazine, God is Winning. Religions are increasingly a geopolitical force to be reckoned with. Fundamentalist movements - some violent in the extreme - are growing. Science and religion are at odds in the classrooms and courtrooms. And a return to religious values is widely touted as an antidote to the alleged decline in public morality. After two centuries, could this be twilight for the Enlightenment project and the beginning of a new age of unreason? Will faith and dogma trump rational inquiry, or will it be possible to reconcile religious and scientific worldviews? Can evolutionary biology, anthropology and neuroscience help us to better understand how we construct beliefs, and experience empathy, fear and awe? Can science help us create a new rational narrative as poetic and powerful as those that have traditionally sustained societies? Can we treat religion as a natural phenomenon? Can we be good without God? And if not God, then what?

This is a critical moment in the human situation, and The Science Network in association with the Crick-Jacobs Center brought together an extraordinary group of scientists and philosophers to explore answers to these questions. The conversation took place at the Salk Institute, La Jolla, CA from November 5-7, 2006.

  • The Future of Colonizing Space- Neil deGrasse Tyson- WGS 2018

    1:19:52

Space missions need to have a defensive component or economic benefit. With economic returns often uncertain, space programmes have tended to be led by governments, because only they can invest in programmes that have a long-term pay-off, whether economic or geopolitical. When it comes to saving humanity from an asteroid impact, Tyson stressed that rather than establishing colonies in space, we would be better to try to deflect the asteroid.

Neil deGrasse Tyson, Frederick P. Rose Director of the Hayden Planetarium, hosts and moderates a panel of experts in a lively discussion about the merits and shortcomings of this provocative and revolutionary idea. The 17th annual Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate took place at The American Museum of Natural History on April 5, 2016.

  • Neil deGrasse Tyson Explains Why The Sky Is Blue

    13:12

Have you ever wondered why the sky is blue? Neil deGrasse Tyson is here to help you answer that question alongside comic co-host Chuck Nice. And, you’re about to find out why the answer is easy to understand, but not that simple.

You’ll learn how the white light from the sun interacts with the atmosphere through a process called “Rayleigh scattering” that makes the sky blue. Neil tells us why the sky turns different shades as the day goes on, and why the sunset changes from blue to amber.

Discover why the reason we have a blue sky is the same reason you can’t see stars during the daytime. And, how this lead to the discovery of the operational definition of where the atmosphere ends and space begins. Neil explains why he thinks space should be defined by gravity and not by the circumstances of our atmosphere. Lastly, Neil gives us a lesson on the frailty of our atmosphere and our delicate place among the stars.

Presenting the exclusive, YouTube video version of our full podcast episode, “Cosmic Queries: Rocket Science is Hard,” complete with a few glitches that got edited out of the podcast! Now you can watch host Neil deGrasse Tyson as he answers fan questions about Antares, Rosetta, Philae, the Space Shuttle and more with the help of Planetary Society CEO Bill Nye the Science Guy and comic co-host Chuck Nice.
