He found a start-up called Icewind that is building a new type of funky wind turbine designed to perform well in low-wind conditions but also to slow itself down in high-winds, preventing it from catching on fire or ripping apart.

Professor of Mechanical & Aeronautical Engineering Ken Visser at Clarkson University has taken a new approach to the design that combines a unique blade shape with a novel integration of the rotor in the duct, creating a wind energy device with some very promising results.

    Germany’s energy transition is in trouble. The country needs wind power if it is going to meet its climate goals, and successfully transition from nuclear and coal power to renewable energy. But the construction of wind turbines has been stalling.

    The sharp decline in the build rate of new wind turbines has raised alarm among political leaders, climate campaigners, and industry leaders. Without the inexpensive power source, the entire wind power sector is in jeopardy, and the German government has little chance of reaching its renewable energy targets.

    Journalist Jörg Moll set out to find out what needs to happen for Germany to still be able to meet its climate targets in a cost-effective manner, and what role wind power needs to play. He met with nature conservationists and climate change deniers, who have formed an unlikely alliance as they stand shoulder to shoulder in their fight against wind farms. Whether it’s nuclear or wind power - nobody wants this in front of their house,” one wind power opponent told Moll.

    Renewable energy research institutes, such as the Fraunhofer IWES, say that lack of political support is responsible for the collapse in construction of new wind turbines. Meanwhile, the wind power sector is facing a crisis. Political leaders theoretically want to expand renewable energy, including wind power. But in reality they are doing everything to stop that happening, because they are afraid of angry citizens, and anxious about every vote,” said Johannes Lackmann, a wind farm manager. Surveys indicate that 80 percent of Germans support wind power. Is the government nonetheless buckling because of angry wind power opponents?

    In a world in desperate need to go carbon-free, solar, wind, and renewables are the future, but our present ability to store their excess energy falls short. 

    Of the many possible solutions, compressed air seems to be sweeping some in the energy sector off their feet. Compressed air energy storage, or CAES, takes advantage of air’s ability to be stored in the form of elastic potential energy until we’re ready to use it.

    We’re currently grappling with modernizing the world’s power grid and a major challenge is to make renewables reliable in every situation, not just on sunny, cloud-free days. That's because renewable energy needs to be “firmed,” meaning that it can give energy on-demand in every situation.

    CAES is lauded by some in the energy sector as a sustainable way to make renewables the world’s go-to energy source, who say that this storage system could be the sustainable energy storage we’ve all been waiting for. The technology converts electrical energy into high-pressure air, which is later released to drive a turbine.

    And while theoretically, CAES could be a cheaper and more sustainable alternative to batteries, there are still a few things holding it back. But an updated version of this old technology, developed by the Canadian company Hydrostor, could give CAES the boost it needs to succeed.

    Having to use an underground cavern means Hydrostor can’t build its plant just anywhere. But VanWalleghem says that, unlike the strict geological needs of oil-and-gas companies, compressed air can be stored in many types of rock formations. That means Hydrostor can technically build its plants on 70% of the planet’s landmass.

    Energy is already stored, of course, in batteries or various other technologies. Even reservoirs can act as huge stores of energy. However nothing that exists or is in development can store energy as well, and as cheaply, as compressed air.

    The grid of the future will be powered by … giant subterranean bagpipes?

    Right now, the world relies predominantly on two different grid energy storage techniques: pumped/dammed hydroelectricity, and batteries. Other methods do exist, but batteries and “pumped hydro,” as they call it, are by far the most common.

    The Future of Energy – Episode 2: Offshore Wind Power

    The global annual potential of onshore and offshore wind power is around 840,000 TWh, that's almost 40 times that world's annual power consumption!

    The Global Wind Power capacity has more than doubled since 2012 from around 280 GW to over 650 GW today.

    650 GW power capacity generates enough electricity to power the US and India combined.

    Along with the growth in capacity, the wind turbines themselves have grown over the years.

    The diameter of commercial turbine rotors was around 17m in the 1980s and generated around .07 MW.

    Today, the average rotor is over 116m and generates over 2.4 MW.

    The giant turbines used today are made possible by the advancement of material science, allowing the giant blades and shafts to withstand a tremendous amount of stress.

    These larger turbines have led to a substantial drop in cost over the past 40 years.

    The cost of wind power was 38 cents per kWh in 1980: today, it's less than two cents!

    Alright, so how do these incredible devices work?

    Wind turbine are like plane propellers but in reverse.

    Instead of an engine powering propellers to generate a wind force, the wind blows through the rotors and powers the engine.

    This boils down to the Bernoulli Principal.

    The shape of the blade causes air to take a longer path around one side compared to the other.

    And this creates a difference in air pressure causing the blade to pull toward the low-pressure side, which spins the rotor.

    Inside the turbine housing lies coils of wire that spin inside a magnetic field generating an electric current.

    The downside to wind power is that only certain parts of the world have consistent wind at the ideal speed, which is between 21 and 26 km/h.

    This map highlights the area that contains ideal wind speeds.

    The areas in yellow, orange, and red are great places of wind turbines.

    However, the map does not cover the shorelines, where the winds are much more constant than on land.

    Offshore wind power is the fastest-growing sector in wind power lead by the UK and Germany.

    The UK has three of the largest offshore wind farms in the world, the largest at the moment being the Hornsea Farm.

    Hornsea has a massive 1.2GW capacity and is located 120 kilometers off England's Yorkshire coast and will produce enough energy to power 1 million homes.

    The farm has 174 turbines, each standing 100 meters tall.

    Each Turbine can power the average home for an entire day with just a single rotation.

    And if you think that's impressive, General Electric has developed a wind turbine that makes the ones on the Hornsea farm look like children.

    Enter the Haliade-X wind turbine.

    The Haliade-X is gargantuan, standing 260 meters tall, equipped with 107 long blades.

    With a 12MW capacity, a single Haliade turbine can power 16,000 homes.

    GE recently constructed a prototype Haliade in the Netherlands; this is a time-lapse of the construction.

    GE plans to commercialize Haliade by 2021 and will supply up to 300 of the massive turbines to the Dogger Bank wind farm.

    Dogger Bank Wind Farm will be the largest offshore wind farm in the world with a massive 3.6 GW capacity and will power 4.5 million homes in the UK.

    Constructing offshore turbines require specialized vessels called offshore Jack-up Installation Vessels.

    And the installation of Haliade-X turbines will require the largest jack-up vessel in the world, the Voltaire, being constructed by Jan De Nul Group.

    The Voltaire is a behemoth at almost 170 meters long.

    Voltaire's lifting capacity of 3,000 tons is twice the capacity as Jan De Nul's next largest vessel.

    Anyway, the UK is gearing up to be carbon neutral by 2050, and with the help of these incredible offshore wind farms, it is well on its way.

    Scotland generated twice the power it needs from wind power in the first half of 2019.

    And offshore wind power is going to expand well beyond the UK in the coming years.

    Germany is not too far behind the UK.

    The country has almost 1500 offshore wind turbines with a capacity of 7.5 GW and is expecting to grow to 15 GW by 2030.

    The Global Wind Energy Council projects the global offshore wind market to grow from 20 GW today to 190 GW by 2030.

    And the total investment in offshore farms could reach $1 trillion by 2040.

    So, wind offers a vast amount of renewable energy that is readily available, no mining, drilling, or fusing of atomic nuclei required.

  • A new and innovative approach to harnessing wind energy | European CEO

    American Wind is an energy technology company that has turned the idea of a wind turbine on its head. Traditionally, to get more energy from wind you need to make your turbine bigger. American Wind's solution: much smaller turbines – called MicroCubes – but many more of them, arranged in two metre by three metre WindWalls, generating 100kw each. Because these solutions are more compact, it means they can be closer to the point of energy need, minimising energy lost during transmission. CEO and President Robert Yost explains how the technology works, what inspired the innovation, and what the next steps are for the company.     ENLİL is a smart vertical axis wind turbine project that transforms highways into renewable energy sources by using the dynamics of the city. It also provides comfort and safety to the city thanks to the build-in sensors and an intelligent platform.     A wind power company, SheerWind, from Minnesota USA has announced its new Invelox wind power generation technology. The company says its turbine could generate six times more energy than the amount produced by traditional turbines mounted on towers.

    Invelox does not rely on high wind speeds. It captures wind at any speed, even as low as 2 miles per hour. The wind captured is then funneled through a duct where it picks up speed. The resulting kinetic energy will drive the generator on the ground level and produces electricity.

    Invelox is said to be able to generate higher power with reduced generation costs. It also requires less land as the towers used are shorter and smaller, with no moving parts.

    The company, SheerWind, has a patented system of harvesting wind power called Invelox that it says can produce six times more green energy than traditional systems.

    The funnel-shaped Invelox system captures wind from all directions, even with wind speeds as low as 2 miles per hour. The wind is then funneled through a duct, where it picks up speed.

    The accelerated wind is delivered to generators on the ground level, where its kinetic energy is harnessed to produce electricity.

    Any residual wind is returned to the environment.

    Unlike conventional turbines, Invelox keeps its generators on the ground rather than on top. This allows it to produce 600 percent more power, the company claims.

    With its capabilities, the powerful device can be used not just commercially, but also in developing nations, in areas where electricity is not readily accessible.

    Current wind energy technology is often criticized as not being an efficient alternative energy solution because the generated energy is either used immediately or lost due to lack of storage, plus it’s difficult to find a proper place for them due to safety, noise and the turbine blades can kill birds in flight.
    That’s why Saphon Energy didn’t want to improve the current turbine technology, but rather come up with a different idea entirely.
    The Saphonian is a bladeless, non-rotating turbine that moves in a figure-eight motion, using the energy from the motion in a similar manner to the way a sail captures kinetic energy from the wind. The energy can also be stored using a hydraulic system as a link between the mechanical and electrical stages.
    Saphon Energy claims the new turbine to be twice as efficient as traditional turbines and at least 45 percent cheaper to manufacture.
