Night of the Northern Lights

  • Night of the Northern Lights

On 25th February 2014 Sun produced X4.9 flare which on 27th February caused G2 (KP 6) geomagnetic storm on Earth. It was the brightest aurora display so far during this solar maximum which I could witness with auroral displays overhead in the far north of Scotland. This short movie illustrates what has been seen from latitude 58.3 degrees north.

  • Warning! Sounds of pure excitement and joy! Wild night of Northern Lights in Alaska in Real-Time

WARNING: This video contains the raw, uncut, unedited emotional sounds of witnessing the magical Northern Lights in Alaska in real-time footage. It was a fantastic night with lots of hollars and may not be suitable for those not able to handle magical moments in the real world. (Proper disclaimer so I don't get a load of comments about the audio or jerky camera movements. If you don't like it mute it.) Now that that's out of the way. ;-)

This was such an incredible night for me, for starters, this was the first time I had my 5yo son, out under the Northern Lights since he was 2. It would also be our dog, Angus's last night chasing Aurora with us. My stunning wife was wearing her beautiful red dress to model for me. And we bumped into and spent the night shooting with my hero, and the man who inspired me to take up Aurora photography, the legendary Aurora Hunter himself, Todd Salat. There's not much more magic that can come together all in one night! I'll never forget it.

  • Everyday life in the house under the northern lights | Ep. 38

The winter days are slowly passing by. On sunny days I can finally hear the birds sing again, and the sun rises higher every day. And in the darkest of nights, the northern lights spreads its wings of light over the sky. Its a beautiful part of the winter, where we still get the cold, the snow, and the nightsky, but feeling the very first tiny signs of spring.

I finally woke up from my little winter hibernation after feeling really uninspired for the past two weeks. I let you know a little more about that in this video. I also let you know what we been up to lately. A glimpse into our everyday life right now.

  • AURORA - northern lights 4K timelapse compilation & relaxation

???? Please consider supporting our channel by buying us a coffee at:

Ever since I started chasing the aurora about 7 years ago in Denmark, I have had requests to make longer videos featuring only the aurora. It has now been more than two years since I established on the beautiful island of Senja in Arctic Norway, which is in my humble opinion the best place on Earth the experience and capture the phenomenon. I have been pointing all my cameras skywards for three consecutive aurora seasons. Every time there was a break in the clouds or with the guests of the aurora borealis observatory, I headed out in sometimes extreme conditions. The result is staggering and is well beyond what I was expecting when I first started chasing the lights on the island. I had been in Iceland, Canada or Sweden before but never was I able to get so much good footage so fast.

The main reason for that is because Senja island is located right in the middle of the auroral zone. Whenever a substorm quicks in, we are usually right below it. To some extent we see aurora every night but being around solar minimum, we see fewer big shows. So we have to make do with what we have. Still the past 3 years have delivered handsome as this compilation suggests. The goal here was to put together almost about 60% of my aurora footage in a 14-minute time-lapse compilation. I really want to show all the facets of this fascinating phenomenon from the simple arch on the northern horizon to the explosion of colors during a corona, not to mention the electric pulsating aurora.

The aurora is obviously not experienced in the same way in real life and on film. However both have their advantages and drawbacks. Nonetheless the secondary purpose of this video is to give the opportunity to stay at home and enjoy beautiful scenes of Arctic Norway while relaxing. You can either watch the video as it is or put it on your background screen a for your guests to enjoy. Many people requested this type of compilation, especially in these times of confinement, so here it is at long last! This video represents 72 sequences of about 300 photos each on average, so over 20K photos in total. It also represents countless hours of working in extreme environment taking the sequences, but also joy when the aurora exploded! It is also a way for me to celebrate my own achievement and to come back on three years of extra-ordinary experiences.

All was shot with the Sony a7s, a7rII and the Canon 6D astromodified and a variety of bright lenses ranging from 14mm to 500mm. For motion control I used the Syrp 3-axis Genie I system and also the Vixen Polarie. All post production was made in Lr with the special timelapse plus plugin, Sequence for mac, TLDF, and final production was made in FCPX. I hope you like the movie as much as I liked shooting and processing it and I thank everyone of you for your support. • ????????Chasing Lights in Tromsø, Norway

Thomas Hunger is an average German fellow but with a touch of quirkiness—his obsession with the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis). He beams with childish enthusiasm and his eyes light up with wonder every time he talks about this natural phenomenon.

But Thomas is not a visitor seeing it for the first time nor is he just a regular tour guide—Thomas “chases” Aurora like a stormchaser would chase tornados. He is in the business of selling the experience of seeing the Northern Lights even though he can never guarantee his guests that he and his team will succeed in catching one. Still, his trips are filled with excitement and frenzy as he constantly consults weather apps to find it, communicates with his team on possible sightings, and crosses open borders into Sweden and Finland with his head fixed skywards, waiting for Aurora to poke out from behind the clouds at night.

When the van they travel in stops his enthusiastic guests get off and plant a thicket of tripods in the snow—cameras pointed up and ISOs boosted high to vividly capture the magical and undulating green waves in the sky.

Thomas runs one of the most successful companies in Tromsø, Norway incidentally called, Chasing Lights. Guests from as far as Malaysia, China, and India make the journey just to be mesmerized by this wash of green that fills the skies of Arctic nights. It’s an experience to cross off the bucket list, his guests often say.

  • What Causes The Northern Lights?

There are many misconceptions about what causes the Aurora Borealis when it really requires solar winds, magnetic fields and excited atmospheric gases.

    Learn more at

    Share on Facebook:
    Share on Twitter:
    Visit our site:

The Northern Lights are beautiful and odd and have understandably inspired many myths. The Vikings thought they were a bridge between our world and Asgard where Thor and the other gods live. In another Norse myth, they are the light reflected of the armor of the Valkyries. And people in Finland thought it was the archangel Michael (John Travolta) battling Beelzebub (the devil).

    Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. All wrong.

It was the famous early astronomer and recanter of science, Galileo Galilei, who gave the Northern lights the name Aurora Borealis, which means “dawn of the North” in Latin. But it wasn’t until Norwegian scientist Christian Birkeland figured it out in 1896 that the true origin of the auroras was understood.

In the center of the Earth, the molten iron core generates magnetic fields that extend through the crust and into space around the planet, creating what’s called Earth’s magnetosphere. It’s a pretty great thing that Earth has it, because the magnetosphere protects us from all manner of charged particles spit out from the Sun.

The Sun is so hot that it produces plasma (a fourth state of matter) where positively charged atoms (ions) and negatively charge electrons flow freely around one another. These highly charged particles have enough energy to escape the Sun’s gravity and fly out into space, barreling toward Earth at 1 million miles per hour like a shotgun blast of solar hate. This is called solar wind.

When they encounter our magnetosphere, most of these ions and electrons bounce harmlessly off and Earth is saved. But some of these particles make it through the magnetosphere where it’s weakest (at the north and south poles), and when they do the light show begins.

The electrons that make it into our atmosphere interact with some of the elements there, particularly oxygen and nitrogen. The electrons transfer energy to them, exciting them in the process. To calm down, the excited atoms must release some energy, which they do as tiny packets of light called photons -- beautiful, beautiful photons.

Depending on where in the atmosphere the electrons interact with these other atoms, different colors are produced. Oxygen emits a yellow-green color up to about 150 miles in the atmosphere. After that, it turns red. Nitrogen emits a nice blue color about 60 miles up. And don’t forget these colors can blend, which can create glowing pinks, purples and whites. It’s like Miami Beach up there.

This interplay is most vibrant during solar storms, which depend somewhat on the Sun’s solar cycle. And, although these lights can be produced at all hours, they aren’t visible during the day, since the sunlight outshines them.

  • The Worlds Very First REAL-TIME Northern Lights Captured in 4K Ultra High Definition

This was the World's Very First REAL-TIME Northern Lights filmed in 4k Ultra High Definition published to YouTube.

Come along with us on a virtual experience, Aurora Chasing in 4K Ultra High Def!

THIS VIDEO WAS INTENDED TO SHOW what's its like to actually be out beneath these amazing Auroras we witness almost nightly. If the camera motion bothers you, please explore this channel for the more polished videos. Thanks!

Despite being under the weather (in all senses, it was well below zero and we were quite sick with the flu), Marketa, Angus and I ventured out to capture the Northern Lights with our newest tool, the Atomos Shogun 4K external recorder. We combined this with a Sony a7S and a DJI Ronin for a look at what's it like to Chase the Lights.

The Atomos did great and while the Ronin usually does a good job it seemed quite jittery on this night. The motors seem to get very stiff in the extreme cold. I'm in contact with support and hope to find a resolution to this but it's done that the last few times I've taken it out in temps colder than 10ºF. Keep in mind it is very windy, I'm stumbling around in knee deep snow and it's about 0ºF so considering, it still held up rather well. This is a sample of how the Ronin should and usually does behave. As of 1/14/15 I'm still waiting to hear back from DJI.

It seems we have a few things to work out both with the Ronin and the Shogun but are very excited for this amazing trio once we get things rolling smoothly.

If you'd like to be out there having your portraits taken in front of these magnificent Northern Lights, join us for a night under the Aurora.

  • Northern lights – adventures in winter | DW Documentary

Most northern Europeans like winter, even when the mercury falls below minus 40 degrees Celsius. But in the polar regions of Norway, Finland and Sweden even running daily errands in snow and storms can be quite an adventure.

Maren Vedvik Dammen and Frida Brockmann are students at what is probably the only outdoor adult education school in Alta, Norway. They were surprised by a blizzard during a survival course and had to dig a cave in the snow to survive the night. When the moon is shining, however, a polar night can be so light you can still read a newspaper. And if you’re lucky, you’ll see the Aurora Borealis, the Northern Lights shimmering across the sky. This documentary looks at mushers who drive their dog sleds in one of the world’s toughest races, at women rally drivers who are just as tough as their male competitors, and ice divers, who find magnificent king crabs when they explore submerged wrecks. The male-voice choir Mieskuoro Huutajat, or shouting men, which was formed during a particularly hard winter three decades ago, has now become an international hit.

  • Otherworldly Northern Lights Dazzle Night Sky

People in Finland got to feast their eyes on a very special sight: The Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights. The natural phenomenon illuminates the night in the northernmost regions of the world. A similar phenomenon, known as the Aurora Australis, happens in the Southern hemisphere. What causes these otherworldly lights? Electrons from the sun collide with oxygen and nitrogen molecules in the upper atmosphere of the Earth. This ultimately results in the release of energy, in the form of light. #InsideEdition

After a glorious gap year from the world of competitive surfing, Mick Fanning and Norwegian photographers Emil Sollie and Mats Grimsæth teamed up to photograph something never done before...a night surf session under nature's most radical light show, the Northern Lights.

With the high technology and natural phenomena side of things taken care of, Mick just wanted a good old fashioned surf trip, and with plenty of swell, some wild accommodation, and Kleiner and photographer Trevor Moran on-hand to record the results in a country that is incredibly new to surfing, that's exactly what he had. And for our ever-evolving Chasing The Shot series, this just might be our favorite release yet. Click play and see how Fanning and Co. got the shot.
