Normandy: War-Torn Yet Full of Life

  • Normandy: War-Torn Yet Full of Life

Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide | In peaceful Normandy, we explore the half-timbered charm of Rouen, reflect on Monet's lily ponds in Giverny, peek in on local artisans, and set up an easel at Honfleur's harbor. We venture into composer Eric Satie's eccentric world and feast on the finest of Normandy cuisine. After pondering sacrifice and celebrating freedom on the D-Day beaches, we hike with pilgrims to the enchanted island abbey of Mont St-Michel.

Omaha Beach is one of the five D-day beaches that the allied forces invaded on June 6 1944. Omaha beach was one of the two beaches the American troops attacked on D-Day. I traveled to Normandy after lockdown to explore Omaha Beach as well as Pointe Du Hoc which is where the rangers climbed up the 90ft cliff's of Normandy. Join me on this travel adventure as we explore the legendary D-Day beaches of Normandy.

  • Normandy D-Day Tour

I put this old footage together from several years ago so it's not the best. Normandy is a northern region in France and the location of one of the most famous battles in WWII. There are many locations but this tour consisted of Arromanches, Longues Sur Mer, Normandy American Cemetery and Pointe Du Hoc. This tour was informative, historical and very much emotional. I recommend anyone who can afford or who is abled bodied to tour this area.

  • Wooden Ships and Iron Men | Setting Sail | Timeline

Within a few hundred years, western ships and sailors spread all over the world, and dominated its trade in the name of god and greed. But the ships that allowed them to do so would not last forever. During the 19th century the era of sail came to a gradual close.

No longer able to compete with steam, the West’s sailing vessels gradually disappeared from the seven seas. Some were left to rot on distant shores, most never escaped the trip to the breakers. Today there are but a few survivors left to remind us of the age of sail.

  • Normandy/Beautiful Brittany Adventure

Brittany spans the farthest northwestern point of France. From rugged coastlines to medieval towns, Brittany is enchanting. We will concentrate on the eastern most area, once the “riviera of the north”, we will see beautiful beaches and harbors filled with sailboats and golden sands. And the amazing medieval towns Dinard/Dinan/St. Malo/Mont St Michel and more. Early in the morning on June 6, 1944, about 156,000 Allied soldiers stormed a handful of beaches along the coast of Normandy, France. Although choppy seas and heavy German resistance prevented them from fully meeting their objectives that day, they were able to gain a crucial foothold. By late August, Paris had been liberated, and Germany’s surrender came not long afterward. On this Adventure we will experience the two American landing points that, along with British and Canadian forces, kicked off the Allied invasion of Western Europe during World War II.
