Code for solving the Schrödinger equation by Jonny Hyman available here:

I learned quantum mechanics the traditional 'Copenhagen Interpretation' way. We can use the Schrödinger equation to solve for and evolve wave functions. Then we invoke wave-particle duality, in essence things we detect as particles can behave as waves when they aren't interacting with anything. But when there is a measurement, the wave function collapses leaving us with a definite particle detection. If we repeat the experiment many times, we find the statistics of these results mirror the amplitude of the wave function squared. Hence the Born rule came into being, saying the wave function should be interpreted statistically, that our universe at the most fundamental scale is probabilistic rather than deterministic. This did not sit well with scientists like Einstein and Schrödinger who believed there must be more going on, perhaps 'hidden variables'.

In the 1950's Hugh Everett proposed the Many Worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics. It is so logical in hindsight but with a bias towards the classical world, experiments and measurements to guide their thinking, it's understandable why the founders of quantum theory didn't come up with it. Rather than proposing different dynamics for measurement, Everett suggests that measurement is something that happens naturally in the course of quantum particles interacting with each other. The conclusion is inescapable. There is nothing special about measurement, it is just the observer becoming entangled with a wave function in a superposition. Since one observer can experience only their own branch, it appears as if the other possibilities have disappeared but in reality there is no reason why they could not still exist and just fail to interact with the other branches. This is caused by environmental decoherence.

Taken from JRE #1352 w/Sean Carroll:

  • The Big Idea: Parallel Universes and Other Dimensions

    4:28

Every day some seven billion people roam planet Earth. People moving through time. Through space. But what if there was more than meets the eye: additional dimensions or perhaps another universe, entirely?

We're talking about the possibility of parallel universes: entire worlds, existing independently of ours, and alternate dimensions; areas of time or space that could exist within our current universe.

This summer, the Netflix sensation Stranger Things brought these to life. A little boy named Will Byers is caught in a parallel universe -- the world of the upside down. This is Hollywood. But it is in fact a real theory supported by real science.

According to Cal Tech researcher Dr. Ranga Ram Chary these possibilities, appear to be illuminated by anomalies in scientific data. It starts with the radiation, left in wake of the big bang theory. Images show some spots brighter than others. Researchers think that this may be due to a collision with an alternate universe with completely different physical properties than our own. But the problem is it is right at the edge of the cutting data and we need to get much better data at different frequencies to test that hypothesis.

In fact, according to Dr. Chary these alternate universes may actually be failed universes, dimensions where the ratio of matter and vacuum energy, two vital properties, may be vastly different than what we see in our universe.

In the show Stranger Things, Will Byers' friends want to access his parallel universe to bring him home, but they can't. The kids are told it would take a massive rip in the atmosphere to bring will home.
It is part of a theory put forth by Columbia physicist Professor Brian Green.

The fascination with parallel universes and alternate dimensions stretches a hundred years or more. Newton, Einstein, and those who followed have attempted to determine what lies beyond the mathematics and if those worlds be accessed. That reality is still a ways off. But these physicists believe there is reason to persist.

  • Quantum Theory reveals Parallel Universes and Quantum Immortality in alternate universes

    10:26

Parallel universes are not a theory, but deductions from the Many Worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics. And there is at least on other theory that predicts not alternate universes but parallel universes where the universes are just like ours, only slightly different, where different versions of us could exist. One is the idea of Infinite universes. The reason space appears to be only 13.7 billion light years in radius is because That limit is set by the distance that light has had the ability to travel since the instant of the Big Bang. The universe is likely larger, and perhaps infinitely larger. If space is infinite, then it must start repeating at some point, because there are a finite number of ways that any set of particles can be arranged. Physicist Brian Greene calculated this number to be 10^10^122 --- this is a very very large number, but it is minuscule compared to infinity. So if you travel far enough in space, you should see another version of you living in completely different circumstances, perhaps as president of the United States, or as rich as Bill Gates.

But the most intriguing theory that leads to parallel universes comes from the many worlds interpretation was proposed by Hugh Everett for his phD thesis in 1957 at Princeton University. This theory says that the wave never collapses, that every time a wave seemingly collapses in our universe, there is a parallel universe where no such collapse happens. This interpretations implies that reality splits like a fork in the road whenever a wave collapse occurs. In effect, the entire universe is one gigantic wave function that contains all possible realities. Everett called it the “universal wave function,” in his thesis. So the universe is also in superposition of all possible states of its constituent particles. As it evolves, some of these superpositions break down, making certain realities or worlds distinct and isolated from each other.

The many worlds interpretation avoids the complication of wave function collapse, but it creates a near infinite number of parallel worlds. Just like in quantum mechanics, everything with a non-zero probability of occurring is a reality in some universe. In other words, there is a universe out there where everything happened just like it did in this one, except you made one or two decisions differently, and your life turned out completely differently – like you became as rich as Bill Gates, or married Kate Upton.

Bryce DeWitt who popularized the many worlds interpretation in the 1970’s says, “Every quantum transition taking place on every star, in every galaxy, in every remote corner of the universe is splitting our local world on earth into myriads of copies.” Quantum physics says that the splitting occurs whenever a wave collapses, meaning whenever a measurement of observation occurs. When you walk around your own house, there must be millions of splitting events because the molecules on your feet are interacting with the molecules of the floor. The numbers of splits and parallel universes has to be astronomical.

Oxford physicist David Deutsch says, many worlds is virtually a fact. It sounds fantastic, but the Many Worlds interpretation predicts outcomes that are completely consistent with physics experiments over the course of decades. MIT physicist Max Tegmark says, “The act of making a decision causes a person to split into multiple copies.”
But I have no awareness of the other copies. Columbia University Professor Brian Greene says we just need to broaden our minds of what “self” actually means. “Each copy believes that it is you. The real you is the sum total” of all the splittings

In the late 1990s a thought experiment was proposed by MIT physicist Max Tegmark -- called quantum suicide. Let’s say someone makes a wager. You are put in a box with a gun pointed to your head and a button in your hand. The button controls a quantum splitter that detects the spin of an electron. If after you press the button the spin says up, the gun does not fire, you come out of the box and win a prize of $1 Billion. But if the spin shows down, then the gun fires and you die instantly. There is a 50% chance that the splitter would detect up, and 50% that it would detect down. Few people, I think, would accept 50/50 odds of life and death. But I might take this bet because If you truly believe in the concept of multiple worlds then you would take this bet every time. Because the only one of “you” that would ever come out of that box would be the one that remains conscious. In other words, in your world, for you to be conscious, you would always have to be in the reality that survived.

In another world, the other versions of you would be dead, but you would not know this. Your conscious self would always survive and become a billionaire.

  • Parallel Universe: Has NASA Really Discovered One, and Does Time Run Backwards In It?

    7:28

Has NASA found a parallel universe where time runs backwards?

Hey guys, I'm back with another video. I'm on a roll, I've posted weekly for 3 weeks in a row now! Pretty proud of myself lol. In this video, I wanted to address the stories that have been going around regarding the discovery of parallel universes.

These stories claim that the ANtarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA) that is partially funded by NASA, has found evidence for the existence of parallel universes. Unfortunately, this is not really what's happening here.

Basically, ANITA is a large balloon about 35ish km above the surface of the Earth. As its name suggests, it's situated over Antarctica. It is a detector designed to look for particles known as neutrinos, coming from outer space. Now normally, neutrinos are very unreactive particles, passing through atoms very easily. In fact, physicists estimate that there are millions of neutrinos passing through every square centimetre of our skin, every second. However, if the neutrinos have high enough energies, then they do interact with matter. Instead of passing straight through everything, they smash into atoms. This collision produces particles that ANITA detects. The types of particles produced tells ANITA that a neutrino must have generated them, and the direction in which they move tell ANITA something about the direction in which the neutrino would have been moving before the collision occurred in the first place.

Now ANITA was put up above Antarctica to study neutrinos coming from high-energy events occurring in outer space. And it's doing that brilliantly. However, it did also spot a couple of neutrinos that seemed to be coming from below - through the Earth, and up to ANITA. This is highly unusual. High-energy neutrinos, which is what ANITA is calibrated to look for, are highly unlikely to come all the way through the Earth and reach the other side. So once scientists confirmed that these measurements were not due to some sort of error in the technology or experimental method and setup, they had to find a way to explain them.

One hypothesis suggested that there was a large Neutrino source on the other side of the Earth, emitting lots of high-energy neutrinos. If this were the case, then it would be reasonable for a couple of them to make it all the way through the Earth and be detected by ANITA. However, another neutrino observatory in Antarctica, the IceCube Neutrino Observatory (run by CERN), has found that this is not the case.

From what I can tell, every possible explanation based on physics that we already know about, has been found to be untrue. (I am not 100% sure about this, so please do check the sources I will link below). But if that is the case, then scientists have to delve into the realm of new physics. One possible explanation of this is that a parallel universe exists where time runs backwards and these neutrinos coming through the Earth are just neutrinos from outer space running backwards in time. However, this hypothesis is just that - a hypothesis. It's not thoroughly developed, and it's certainly not the only explanation for what's going on. Most importantly, the discovery of these anomalous neutrinos is not automatically evidence for the existence of parallel universes.

Unfortunately though, the idea of a parallel universe is exciting to read about, so it's been making the headlines - and this is another case of a scientific discovery being blown out of both context, and proportion.

There is a certain law out there in the world today that everyone should know. It is one backed up by science, by history, by common sense, and more. Quite simply, that law is the law of You Don't Trust Everything You See On The Internet! Granted, sometimes you see things on the internet that are so shocking that it CAN'T be true, and yet it is. But other times, you get lured in by something that seems shockingly true, and yet, it's not.
Such was the case recently with the discovery of something that truly would've broken the universe as we know it. Because according to some, NASA had discovered a parallel universe. One where time didn't flow normally. Instead, it flowed backward.
So let's be like that parallel universe and rewind things for a bit, shall we? A little while back articles from the New York Post, Daily Star and Express stated sources that NASA had indeed discovered a parallel universe, and in this universe, time was flowing backwards ever since the point of the Big Bang. The internet went crazy with this potential discovery, especially as many wondered what it could mean in the large scale.
The idea of parallel universes is nothing new (as we discuss in another video of ours!), and there has been rampant speculation as to what they would be like, how they formed, and more. But it would be safe to say that in all of those theories, none of them had time running backwards, as that would be highly irregular, and how do you go backwards from the beginning of time itself?
Regardless of that answer, many people across the board started to go nuts on the internet trying to figure out the hows and whys as to how all of this happened. When the immediate answer was right in front of them. Not in regards to how it all worked, but rather, whether we could believe this to be true. Because The New York Post, the Daily Star and the Express aren't exactly the most reliable of sources when it comes to major news breaks.
Not to mention, if you look at the articles from the papers, they're all just quoting one another, and just as important, they're citing a lot of information...in an incorrect fashion.
That's right, NASA has NOT found a parallel universe where time flows backwards, not even close. Though that does raise the question...how did we get from there to here? Simple, NASA did find something, it's just nothing on the level of a parallel universe...yet.
Before we dive into what REALLY is going on in the world of NASA, be sure to like or dislike the video, that way we can continue to improve our content for you the viewer! Also, be sure to subscribe to the channel, that way you don't miss ANY of our weekly videos!
So where did this whole parallel universe mess really start? Believe it or not, it was in Antarctica. But not in the way you're thinking. There's an experiment going on down there that had some interesting findings as of late.
Scientists actually found evidence (signals) of fundamental particles that may defy our current understanding of physics. It might even just be an issue with how particles interact with ice.
Here's a detailed breakdown of the experiment in the words of its lead research paper writer, Ibrahim Safa of UW–Madison.
During the first three flights of the Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA) experiment, the collaboration detected several neutrino candidates. Two of these candidate events were consistent with an ultra-high-energy up-going air shower and compatible with a tau neutrino interpretation. A third neutrino candidate event was detected in a search for Askaryan radiation in the Antarctic ice, although it is also consistent with the background expectation. The inferred emergence angle of the first two events is in tension with IceCube and ANITA limits on isotropic cosmogenic neutrino fluxes. Here, we test the hypothesis that these events are astrophysical in origin, possibly caused by a point source in the reconstructed direction.
Notice that nowhere in there is any words like parallel or universe or reversing time. Which brings us to a tweet that Safa did after hearing about all the people saying that the team had found a parallel universe:
NASA has discovered that y'all should not be getting your news from the new york post.
    Wise words indeed.

Link to Sean Carroll's EXCELLENT new book Something Deeply Hidden:

The many worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics was put forth by graduate student Hugh Everett in 1957. It was considered preposterous at the time, but is now going mainstream. It requires us to change our paradigm about our experience of reality, and consider that there may be many worlds where every possible quantum outcome happens. And that we are living in just one of those branches of the universe at any one moment.

I spoke to the authority on this subject: Prof Sean Carroll of Caltech. That interview along with the explanation and comparison of the Many Worlds interpretation compared to the Copenhagen interpretation is featured here.

the Copenhagen interpretation was championed by Neils Bohr in the 1920’s. It suggests that objective reality doesn’t exist until it is observed or measured. The quantum world is governed by a set of probabilities as described by a wave function that evolves over time in the Schrodinger equation. The act of measuring forces the set of probabilities to randomly assume only one possible value.

But the many worlds interpretation says that the entire universe is in a state of superposition. A measurement may look like a particle has some set of properties, but that is not the overall reality. It posits that the world splits every time we THINK a quantum measurement is made. And that although we may see one thing in our world, there is another world in which another thing has occurred.

So for example, if we are trying to measure the spin state of an electron, the MWI says that our measuring device becomes entangled with the electron. This causes something called decoherence. The decoherence splits the universe in two such that in one universe the device measures spin up, and in the second universe, the device measures spin down. Both universes exist. We just happen to experience one of these universes. We could just as well be in either universe.

And similarly, this kind of decoherence is happening all the time. And in every instance this happens, the universe splits. So this is why it is called many worlds, because many such branches or splits of the world exist simultaneously.

In the Copenhagen interpretation, there are two sets of rules. One set of rules applies to systems prior to measurement, and a different set of rules applies for systems after measurement.

The many worlds interpretations says, no, this is not the way the universe works, that there are only one set of rules that abide by and evolve over time according to the Schrodinger equation. And there is no randomness because all possible outcomes are a branch of the many worlds.

The Good points about the MWI are:
    1) it gets rid of measurement problem.
    2) It lets us apply quantum mechanics to the entire universe.
    3) there is no randomness.

The bad points about MWI are:
    1) How does branching occur?
    2) How is energy conserved.
    3) Why do we see only one world, if the other worlds are equally present?

Branching occurs by decoherence, which is not quite like wave collapse. It can be thought of as a loss of information to the environment. When an isolated quantum system like say an electron gets entangled with its environment like photons and other molecules that may be present, this has the effect of a transfer of quantum information. All of the photons and atoms that bounce off the electron are agents of decoherence, and can fix its position in space and give it a sharp outline.
This is decoherence and causes the branching. This is how quantum systems can start behaving like classical system.
    #quantummechanics
    #manyworldsinterpretation
    #quantumphysics

The total energy of the universe and all its branches is conserved analogous to the way that the all the individual probabilities inherent in the Schrodinger equation add up to one.

I asked Sean Carroll about that, and he, like me, hates that idea. I myself think that physics is more than calculations, it is a science that tries to get at the truth about what the true nature of reality actually is. That’s what we should really be after, I feel. And that pursuit at least on this channel will always exist.

  • Superconsciousness: Is the universe a conscious mind?

    7:40

What if the universe is self-aware? Is there a cosmic superconsciousness? Could it be a giant brain? Is the universe a conscious mind? There is a short but lazy answer, and there is longer but more intriguing answer. The lazy answer is: We humans are made of pieces of the universe. We are conscious, so the universe is conscious through us.

This is the standard short answer to the question of a conscious universe. But could the universe have a consciousness separate from us or any other conscious being? Could it be a kind of super consciousness? This concept has a name. It is called panpsychism.

The concept of Panpsychism has been around for thousands of years. It is an essential aspect of many religions, from the Old Testament's omnipresent God to the Brahman of Hinduism and Buddhism. In fact, in Buddhism, nothing exists except consciousness.

Theoretical physicist Freeman Dyson, the man who conceived of the Dyson sphere, embraced panpsychism and said that the universe not only operates through our consciousness but a consciousness of its own.

    Could this be true?

First we have to establish what consciousness is. Neuroscientist and psychiatrist Giulio Tononi, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has proposed a way to measure how conscious a thing is. He proposes that consciousness has to do with how much control a being has over itself or things around it. He even invented a measurement unit called phi to label how conscious something is.
    #superconsciousness
This theory separates intelligence from consciousness, which are two different things. Super computers for example, which are highly intelligent, can routinely out-think humans and beat them at chess and Jeopardy, but they don’t have a will of their own. The programmer controls it. So intelligence and consciousness are two different things.

Based on this line of thinking we can say that a tree is more conscious than a rock. A worm is more conscious than a tree. A cat is more conscious than a worm. A human is more conscious than a cat. And the ultimate consciousness could be the universe itself.

If this is the way consciousness works, then the complexity of an organism’s brain has something to do with its level of consciousness. And scientists do have good evidence that the seat consciousness resides in brains. If we are more conscious than all the other animals, as we appear to be, it surely is no coincidence that we also have the most complex brain.

Consciousness seems to be an emergent property of highly interconnected and communicating systems like the brain which is an interconnected network of neurons that can fire chemical and electronic signals. Consciousness is not a property of individual neurons but results from the interactions of many neurons.

And what are neurons? They are triggered by certain stimuli and can send signals to each other. And large complex networks of these neurons seem to emerge into consciousness. The more complex the network, the more conscious something appears to be.

So is there some kind of network such that a “communication” of sorts might be happening at the quantum level between entangled pairs of particles. There is a humongous network of galaxies in the universe, many hundreds of billions of galaxies. This is not dissimilar from the network of the billions of interconnected neurons in our brain. The difference appears to be that each of our brain cells can communicate or at least fire a signal to other brain cells. Do the galaxies have such a communication mechanism between them?

It doesn’t appear so, but you have to remember that at the center of almost all galaxies, there is a black hole. It’s like the nucleus of a brain cell. What’s happening inside a black hole? We have no idea…because all our physics equations break down at the event horizon of a black hole – this is the point where time and space cease to exist and Einstein’s equations don’t work.

    #superconsciousness

Is it possible that something is happening here that we just don’t know about? The black hole could only be analogous to a brain cell if somehow they were connected to each other and could send signals to each other.

If that was the case, a vast network of communicating trillion black holes would act like a gigantic information processor, and indeed be intelligent and possibly conscious. This would truly be a kind of super consciousness that could theoretically control not only our universe, but perhaps time and space itself.

But I think I’m getting way too excited about a completely speculative possibility. Practically, we have to ask, does the universe need to be conscious in order to arrive at its present state. In other words, does what we see around us need a consciousness to direct the events that lead up to what we observe, that lead to life? Would what we see right now be any different if the universe was utterly without consciousness? See the answer in the video above.

    Tenth Place: Arrokoth
We'll be kicking off our list with the discovery and flight of Arrokoth, the most distant object explored up close in our system. In 2016, the New Horizons probe reached Pluto and took the first pictures of it when it flew over the planet.

    Ninth Place: The Cosmic Wave
To understand this fantastic discovery, first we have to understand a bit about how space and our universe works. Every galaxy in the observable universe is a small dot or landmark on a long line of gas known as the cosmic web.

Eighth Place: Teegarden’s Star habitable planets
In June 2019, researchers reported that they had found two Earth-like exoplanets circling a red dwarf known as Teegarden's Star, which lies only 12.5 light-years from Earth.

    Sixth Place: The Heliopause
We know all about our atmosphere, magnetosphere, asteroids, comets and all kinds of objects that come in contact with earth and get promptly disintegrated by these protective fields.

    Fifth Place: Orphaned Planet
If you know a little bit about stars and their lives, you might know that when a star runs out of fuel and collapses, it might become a white dwarf, which is the crystalline corpse of a star.

    Fourth Place: Solar Tsunamis
Tsunamis are never good news, and tsunamis in the Sun are definitely not good news either, while still sounding like an awe-inspiring phenomenon.

    Third Place: Mid-mass Black Hole
Whenever something nears a black hole, it's difficult to really get out of its gravitational pull.

    Second Place: Baby Black Holes
Black Holes are without a doubt space's most terrifying objects. In March 2019, some Japanese astronomers wanted to search baby pictures of the universe by pointing their telescope to a corner of space around 13 billion light years away.

    First Place: Real-life Tatooine
If you've watched Star Wars, you probably remember the planet Tatooine fondly. Thanks to help
from NASA's transiting exoplanet survey satellite, the NASA was able to find a strange exoplanet in a three-star system in our galaxy.

The True Science of Parallel Universes

    Multiverse Theory, Explained

  • Do Parallel Universes Exist ?

    2:00

A parallel universe, also known as a parallel dimension, alternate universe, or alternate reality, is a hypothetical self-contained plane of existence, co-existing with one's own.
The  parallel universe, concept is a facet of the astronomical theory of the multiverse.

According to the Big Bang theory, Around 13.7 billion years ago, the cosmos was merely an infinitesimal singularity.
Then, some unknown trigger caused Big Bang and it expand and inflate in three-dimensional space.
As the immense energy of this initial expansion cooled, light began to shine through.

Eventually, the small particles began to form into the larger pieces of matter we know today, such as galaxies, stars and planets.

But one big question remained unsolved with this theory. are we the only universe out there?.
With all technology we have, we are limited to observations within this universe because the universe is curved and we are inside of it.
There are several concepts discuss this and parallel universe is one of concept.

If we consider that the space-time is flat, the number of possible particle configurations in multiple universes would be limited to 10 to the power 10 to the power 122 distinct possibilities, to be exact.
So, with an infinite number of cosmic patches, the particle arrangements within them must repeat — infinitely many times over.
This means there are infinitely many parallel universes, cosmic patches exactly the same as ours containing someone exactly like you, as well as patches that differ by just one particle's position, patches that differ by two particles' positions, and so on down to patches that are totally different from ours.

Even though parallel universe has not revealed in practical world, scientist are continuously doing their studies on multiverse theory.
One day humanity will explore one, if it exist and that will be the day, you will meet your the identical other, from a different universe.

A parallel universe, also known as a parallel dimension, alternate universe or alternate reality, is a hypothetical self-contained plane of existence, co-existing with one's own. The sum of all potential parallel universes that constitute reality is often called a “multiverse.

For some of us, the idea of parallel Universes spark our wildest dreams. If there are other Universes where certain events had different outcomes — where just one crucial decision went a different way — perhaps there could be some way to access them. Perhaps particles, fields, or even people could be transported from one to the other, enabling us to live in a Universe that's better, in some ways, than our own. These ideas have a foothold in theoretical physics as well, from the myriad of possible outcomes from quantum mechanics as well as ideas of the multiverse. But do they have anything to do with observable, measurable reality? Recently, a claim has surfaced asserting that we've found evidence for parallel Universes. Lets check it out.

So what was the remarkable evidence that demonstrates the existence of a parallel Universe? What observation or measurement was made that brought us to this remarkable and unexpected conclusion?

The ANITA (ANtarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna) experiment — a balloon-borne experiment that's sensitive to radio waves — detected radio waves of a particular set of energies and directions coming from beneath the Antarctic ice. This is good; it's what the experiment was designed to do! In both theory and in practice, we have all sorts of cosmic particles traveling through space, including the ghostly neutrino. While many of the neutrinos that pass through us come from the Sun, stars, or the Big Bang, some of them come from colossally energetic astrophysical sources like pulsars, black holes, or even mysterious, unidentified objects.
These neutrinos also come in a variety of energies, with the most energetic ones (unsurprisingly) being the rarest and, to many physicists, the most interesting. Neutrinos are mostly invisible to normal matter — it would take about a light-year's worth of lead to have a 50/50 shot of stopping one — so they can realistically come from any direction.

However, most of the high-energy neutrinos that we see aren't produced from far away, but are produced when other cosmic particles (also of extremely high energies) strike the upper atmosphere, producing cascades of particles that also result in neutrinos. Some of these neutrinos will pass through the Earth almost completely, only interacting with the final layers of Earth's crust (or ice), where they can produce a signal that our detectors are sensitive to.
The rare events that ANITA saw were consistent with a neutrino coming up through the Earth and producing radio waves, but at energies that should be so high that passing through the Earth uninhibited should not be possible.

How many events like this did they see? Three.

Did they have to come through the Earth? No. The first two could have been normal air-shower tau neutrinos (one of the three types of neutrino allowed), while the third was probably just part of the experimental background.

In fact, there's an extraordinary piece of evidence that disfavors them coming through the Earth: the IceCube neutrino detector exists, and if high-energy tau neutrinos are regularly passing through the Earth (and the Antarctic ice), IceCube would have definitively seen a signal. And, quite unambiguously, they have not.

There's a remarkable story here that's all about good science. An experiment (ANITA) saw something unexpected and published their results. A much better experiment (IceCube) followed it up and ruled out their leading interpretation. It strongly suggested something is amiss with the first experiment, and more science will help us uncover what's truly occurring. For now, based on the scientific evidence we have, parallel Universes will have to remain a science fiction dream.
