  • Sharing the story: Julianna’s exceptional story goes viral … and the impact of that.

    10:38

Julianna’s story goes viral via CNN… and the impact of that.

In this Zoom interview with CPN, Michelle — mother of Alex (age 7) and Julianna, who had a severe form of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease and died at age 5 — explains how she began sharing the exceptional conversation she had with Julianna about her wishes and how the writing turned into a story on CNN that went viral, and the range of feedback, judgement and comments she got, good and bad. Michelle reflects on the experience and how she doesn't regret the decision. Families have contacted me and it’s changed the way the course of their child’s care which is incredible to me. • Julianas FINAL DAYS

    1:10:41

I decided to delete the video, I posted, of Juliana's final days and remove certain scenes. As of today, December 7, 2016, Johns Hopkins Hospital has yet to provide us with a logical reason why Juliana's health declined so rapidly starting on October 20, 2016.

She started a rapid decline the evening of October 20th and EVERYONE told us it was the result of the pain medications. We want the truth. She died on October 24. As of today, Johns Hopkins is refusing to have another meeting with us to address some of our questions regarding her death as they couldn't answer a few of our questions in our first meeting which we initiated. NO ONE, FROM THE HOSPITAL, TOLD US SHE WAS GOING TO DIE SOON. She was scheduled to start new cancer treatment on October 26th.

NO ONE contacted us, from the hospital, after her death (except for a doctor and a nurse coming to the last viewing)...NO ONE. It was like we didn't even exist. Yesterday, the hospital said they will send us a letter in the next thirty days to explain how and why she died. We deserve the truth. We deserve answers. There was something that happened between Thursday (October 20) and Friday (October 21) the day she was discharged from the hospital. We can't be the only family who has had a similar situation happen to their child.

The gaping hole in Tammy's heart and my heart is growing and growing every day. We don't know what happened...for sure. We want the truth.

    Love you all!

  • This Doctor Wants to Humanize Death | Op-Docs

    22:10

If losing a child to an illness is one of the worst things that can happen to a family, Dr. Nadia Tremonti has made it her mission to make it better.

It’s not easy. But as a pediatric palliative care physician, she works to ensure that terminally ill children receive quality end-of-life care. Palliative care is sometimes misunderstood to shorten life expectancy, but it’s a method that increases quality of life, improves symptom burden and decreases medical costs. We follow Dr. Tremonti in John Beder's Dying in Your Mother's Arms as she works to make death less medical and more human. In the process she asks a critical question: When a child is terminally ill, how can we make the end of life a better one?

  • Moral Math of Robots: Can Life and Death Decisions Be Coded?

    1:32:08

A self-driving car has a split second to decide whether to turn into oncoming traffic or hit a child who has lost control of her bicycle. An autonomous drone needs to decide whether to risk the lives of busload of civilians or lose a long-sought terrorist. How does a machine make an ethical decision? Can it “learn” to choose in situations that would strain human decision making? Can morality be programmed? We will tackle these questions and more as the leading AI experts, roboticists, neuroscientists, and legal experts debate the ethics and morality of thinking machines.

  • How to die peacefully: Jeanine Staples at TEDxPSU

    13:56

Sociocultural Literacist Jeanine Staples begins with a somber and surprising assertion. It is that sometime today, maybe tomorrow, and definitely by next week, you are going to die, and it will probably be violent. She admits that she will die too. Yet, she asserts that her death will be peaceful. In her fascinating talk, Dr. Staples explains how we die all day long throughout our lives, why those deaths are so often violent, and how we can instead facilitate peaceful deaths, thereby living peacefully: with courage, unconditional love and authority from the inside out.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. • Road traffic crashes are the leading cause of death of children and young people

    1:13

The Global status report on road safety 2018, launched by WHO in December 2018, highlights that the number of annual road traffic deaths has reached 1.35 million. The burden is disproportionately borne by pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists, in particular those living in developing countries. The report suggests that the price paid for mobility is too high, especially because proven measures exist. Drastic action is needed to put these measures in place to meet any future global target that might be set and save lives.
